    With regards to Ellen White’s beliefs concerning the Holy Spirit, there areliterally hundreds of quotations that came from her pen but because spacehere is very limited, we can only quote some of them. There will be enoughthough to give us a balanced view as to what she really did believe aboutthis mysterious’ divine personality.

     !s we shall see as we go through this study, as far as Ellen White was

    concerned, the most important aspect of the Holy Spirit was that when Hedwelt within a person, it was as the presence of our "ord within, thus itcould be said that those who receive this presence #the Holy Spirit$ wereparta%ers of the divine nature #& 'eter ()*$.

    Ellen White, the presence of the Holy Spirit is as the personal presence of 4hrist to the soul1. This was e5actly the same as said by our pioneers. She then added He who loo%s to 4hrist in simple, childli%e faith, is made a partaker of thedivine nature through the agency of the holy Spirit .1 (bid& We are told here that when the Holy Spirit dwells within, we are then theparta%ers of the divine nature #see & 'eter ()*$ 6ver a decade later in (-78, Ellen White also said #this was after  sheemphasised that the Holy Spirit is a personality$

She is therefore saying that as a

     Here is a very interesting quote from Ellen White’s writings. +t is animmense help in understanding how she regarded the Holy Spirit. This iswith reference to the time when /od raises the unrighteous to life after thethousand years in Heaven are ended #meaning after the millennium$. She says The presence of Christ having been removed , Satan wor%s wonders tosupport his claims.1 (Ellen G. White, The Great 5ontrover#, 1911 Edition

     pa!e ++ ‘The 5ontrover# ended'& 9ote here what is removed3 +t is the presence of 4hrist1.

    This cannot mean the bodily presence of 4hrist because this would havebeen withdrawn from the earth at the ascension over 8777 yearspreviously. +t can only be concluded that this presence1 is the Holy Spirit.

     !llow me to e5plain. This final and total withdrawal of 4hrist’s presence #the Holy Spirit$ fromthis earth happens immediately prior to the return of Jesus. This is whyat that time there will be a time of trouble li%e there never was before #see:aniel (&)($. +n other words, there will be no Holy Spirit to hold in chec% theunrighteous. This is followed by the return of ?esus, also the ta%ing of /od’s people to heaven for a thousand years #see @evelation &7)(2>$. +n the above quote therefore, Ellen White is saying that after the thousandyears is finished #when the unsaved are raised to life$ there is stillno presence of 4hrist1 to hold them in chec%. This presence of 4hrist1 removed therefore, as in the Ellen White quoteabove, is obviously the withdrawal of both the Holy Spirit and Hiscontrolling influence. To put this in another way, remove the Holy Spirit and

    you remove the presence of 4hrist. +t is one and the same thing. The HolySpirit is the presence of 4hrist1. This same presence of 4hrist1 #the Holy Spirit$ is also that which gives/od’s people their power

She said this A years after the publication of The :esire of !ges’. This was no different than what she had always believed. Ta%e for e5amplehere remar%s in an address delivered at the close of  the !ustralian Bible School on :ecember (8th (-&.

    She said The best recommendation you can carry with you of this school and itsinfluence is a well2ordered life and a godly conversation. He will send hisrepresentative, the Holy Spirit! for He says, C+ will not leave youcomfortless0 " will come to you .C (bid& Ellen White is quoting here from ?ohn (*)(. 9ote whom ?esus said #andEllen White is emphasising$ would be coming as the comforter #the HolySpirit$. +t was the "ord ?esus1 Himself. This is why she said the "ord?esus will always be at your right hand to help you1.

     Ta%e careful note of her words. She said that it was not essential for us todefine ;ust what1 the Holy Spirit is.

     !fter quoting the words of ?esus when He spo%e of the coming of thecomforter as found in ?ohn (*)(> and (F she then said CThis refers to the omnipresence of the Spirit of Christ, called theComforter . !gain ?esus says, C+ have yet many things to say unto you, butye cannot bear them now. attempt to reason how this is at all possible, then they would do well toheed the words that Ellen White ne5t wrote to 4hapman. This is when she said to him There are many mysteries which " do not seek to understand or toe%plain! they are too high for me, and too high for you . 6n some of these points,silence is golden. 'iety, devotion, sanctification of soul, body,and spirit22this is essential for us all. She said that these things were beyond the comprehension of both her and 4hapman therefore on some of these

    points silence is golden1.

     !s we shall see in section forty2four , Ellen White’s beliefs concerning theHoly Spirit were rather comple5, not even being fully understood by her own son W. 4. White and he probably understood her beliefs better thananyone else. 4ertainly her belief was not as easy as saying that the HolySpirit was ;ust another personal being li%e /od and 4hrist.

    Even though Ellen White said that the Holy Spirit is a person1, she says ()years later  that to us as human beings, His nature is a mystery. This is arather obvious realisation, at least it does become so when it is realisedthat He’ dwells within perhaps millions of different people at the same time. Even before this in (->, Ellen White had said much the same in a letter that she sent from !ustralia. This is when she said to the brethren in !merica Evil had been accumulating for centuries, and could only be restrained andresisted by the mighty power of the Holy Spirit, the third person of the&odhead , who would come with no modified energy, but in the fulness of divine power. !nother spirit must be met0 for the essence of evil was

Through these messengers He is in active communication withevery part of His dominion.*y His Spirit He is everywhere present .Through the agency of His Spirit   and His angels He ministers to thechildren of men.1 (initr# o" Healin!, pa!e *1= ‘/ tr%e Bnowled!e o" God'& Here we are told that /od Himself, by His Spirit, is everywherepresent1 yet at the very same time He is still in Heaven in His High andHoly place1. 6bviously, this Spirit’ belongs to /od and is Himself in a form

     presence.1 (Ellen G. White, ‘The ;eire o" /!e', pa!e 2==, ‘evi Catthew'&

     !gain we see Ellen White saying that whilst ?esus was absent inperson1 #whilst He was in the sanctuary in Heaven$ He would still be withthem1 here on earth. 9ow how can this be3 6bviously it is only if the HolySpirit, in one sense, is the same person’ as 4hrist. 9otice that Ellen Whitesaid that the Holy Spirit was thelight of His G4hrist’s presence1. The HolySpirit therefore is as the presence of 4hrist.

    !he Holy Spirit " Christ Himself

    9ow note something else that Ellen White said about the Holy Spirit. This isreally important to our understanding of what she understood was the truthabout Him.

     !s we have already noted in section si5teen and various other sections,

    Ellen White did say that 4hrist is the eternal presence1. This is when she said after saying that + !=’ means eternal presence’ Then said the ?ews unto Him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hastThou seen !braham3 ?esus said unto them, Derily, verily, + say untoyou, *efore +braham was, " + . Then too% they up stones to cast at HimCbecause of that saying Gverses AF2A-. Christ was using the great nameof &od   that was given to =oses to e%press the idea of the eternal

     presence.1 (Ellen G. White, an%$ript No. 1-8*, 6ebr%ar# 18, 19 th, 1897, pa!e 21&

     !s we reasoned this through considerably in section si5teen #seealso section nine of the Begotten Series’$, we will not do so again here but+ will point out that ;ust two pages later we find these words Cumbered with humanity , 4hrist could not be in every place

     personally 0 therefore it was altogether for their advantage that He shouldleave them, go to His father, and send the Holy Spirit to be His successor

    on earth.1 (bid& She then added The Holy Spirit is Himself divested of the personality of humanityand independent thereof . He would represent Himself as present in allplaces by His Holy Spirit, as the mnipresent .1 (bid&

But the Spiritwas now given for a special purpose. Before the disciples could fulfill their official duties in connection with the church, Christ breathed His Spirit upon them.
