This year, the Ella’s annual Fall Harvest Festival begins a year-long celebration of the Ella Sharp Museum’s 50th anniversary.

In September of 1964, the newly formed Ella Sharp Museum Association hosted a Museum Day on the grounds surrounding the Ella Sharp home which they had leased from the city. The event served as a kickoff for major fund raising and for beginning renovations on Ella’s home so that it could be opened as a museum.

Huge crowds attended this event to see the plans for their community museum and to visit booths and

activities hosted by historical and cultural groups from throughout the county.

Along with commemorating this auspicious day in the museum’s history, the Fall Harvest festival will celebrate the changing season with

activities the community has enjoyed for years, including pumpkin decorating, tractor parades, and archery demonstrations.

In addition to these favorites, attendees can look forward to stagecoach rides around the park thanks to festival sponsor Wells Fargo.

By now I hope you have heard about the spectacular opening of the new Cell Block 7 Museum on Cooper Street In Jackson. We have had

great crowds of visitors to this one-of-a-kind experience.

The Exhibits staff are to be commended on their great work and dedication in getting this facility ready and open at the end of June. We will be making updates and changing over features as the year progresses, so please visit again. Museum members receive a discounted admission.

At the main museum we have had a delightful summer of events, including all of our patio parties. Knowing how much our members enjoy having something going

on during the evening we keep our doors open late, we have planned a platform of lectures and entertainment for the fall season.

The current exhibits in the galleries have attracted many new faces to the museum. We were very pleased to host guests of Park West Gallery of Southfield, MI for the opening of Dominic Pangborn’s Evolution of Art & Design Through Revolution. Galleries will change again in October, so be sure to stop by often and see all that is here.

We will start the celebration of our 50th year in October, devoting an entire year of exhibits and events to reflecting on our great history and all those who have made it possible throughout the community. Come celebrate with us!

I hope to see everyone soon!

From the Director Amy Reimann

We’re curious...

With the end of another season upon us, we once again must say goodbye to the interns who have worked so hard over the past few months. This summer we were very fortunate to work with this dedicated and diligent group:

Chris Cox, Western Mighigan University | History EducationChris assisted with planning and installation of multiple exhibits, did research for this year’s Cemetery Walk, and was a major contributor to the Civil War summer camp.

Sara Flintoft, Eastern Michigan University CollectionsSara inventoried artifacts in the Merriman-Sharp Farmhouse and conducted research for upcoming exhibits.

Emily Horbatch, Michigan State University | CollectionsEmily catalogued items from the museum’s collection and helped install Cell Block 7 and other exhibits.

Hannah Litvan, Albion CollegeHannah assisted many departments, editing docent manuals and helping with anything from vinyl preparation to conducting house tours to covering the front desk. Her flexibility and willingness to help truly made her irreplaceable.

The Friends formed in 1969 to support the Ella Sharp Museum through volunteerism and financial assistance. All museum members are welcome to the Friends’ lunch meeting at noon on the second Monday of the month to discuss ways to serve the museum and to enjoy interesting programs on art and history. To learn more or join the Friends, contact Andy Walz at 517.782.9150.

Thank You

Connoisseurs and Supporters,

As the Festival Director of the Art, Beer and Wine Festival, I would like to thank all parties involved for helping to transform this event into a full-fledged extravaganza! On June 7th, we welcomed over 90 vendors, 180 volunteers, and over 1,750 guests to the museum, shattering records from years past and solidifying the festival’s position in the ranks of the top summer events to attend in south central Michigan.

I would like to personally thank the volunteers, from the token counters to the wine pourers, for their contributions on the front lines and behind the scenes while displaying an outstanding level of enthusiasm and engagement with guests as proud representatives of the museum. Whether it was a two-hour shift taking tickets or a five-hour commitment assisting vendors at the front gates, no role went unnoticed and we truly, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you for making this

event the great success that it has become.

I’d also like to thank those who attended the event, engaged with the artists, and enjoyed the tastes of Pure Michigan throughout the festival. As the festival continues to grow, we will continue to enhance the elements of customer experience in a variety of aspects for the coming year.

It was exciting to see such a phenomenal turnout and celebration of Michigan-based products and culture at the museum’s primary fundraising event.

I look forward to seeing you all again next year!

Cheers,Kyle Liechty

Preserved Art à Loan

Call for Artists

Andrews Gallery of Wildlife Art

The art of preparing and mounting the skins of animals for display or study first developed in France around the mid-1700s and has advanced dramatically over the years.

This exhibit explores the process, techniques and materials used in modern taxidermy. A variety of works by local taxidermists will also be featured.

Preserved: The Art of Taxidermy opens in the Emmet and Pyron galleries on October 18 and runs through January 10, 2015.

Ella Sharp Museum and Jackson Civic Art Association are teaming up again this year for the eighth annual Art à Loan, a program designed to encourage young artists to develop and share their talents with the Jackson community.

Each year, teachers from public and private schools in Jackson County submit artwork by students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. This year’s show, which will be on display in the Hurst gallery, was juried by exhibiting artist Dominic Pangborn.

The pieces will be unveiled at a public reception at the museum on Thursday, October 18 at 6 p.m. After the exhibit, the pieces of art are rented and displayed in businesses, professional offices and organizations for one year. If you are interested in renting any of the pieces of art for your business, please visit ellasharp.org.

Pete Zaluzec works in a wide range of media including sculpture, photography, drawing and painting. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The Art Institute of Chicago and has since won numerous awards for his work. His latest works combine natural materials with cast bronze.

This sculpture, along with many returning favorites, will be on display starting in October; be sure to visit Songbird Serenade one more time before the gallery changes.

The Ella Sharp Museum is excited to issue a call for artists for the Statewide Fine Art Competition.

The exhibition will take place November 22–January 17, 2015. Deadline for artist submissions is September 29, 2014.

This juried exhibition features a wide variety of styles and media and is a wonderful opportunity for artists to express their creativity and share their talents.

For more information on registration and submission of images, contact Rachel Veramay at 517-787-2320 or email [email protected].
