KING PHILIP II Elizabeth became queen in 1588, soon after

some fights with Spain started. Mary had been a Roman Catholic and had

undone all Henry VIII´S changes to the Church. This angered English Protestants so she started a war with France. She had married Phillip II of Spain and when she died, Philip wanted to marry Elizabeth

England was losing badly, so Philip promised to use Spain´s armies to help against the French if she married him.

Elizabeth was a Protestant and Philip was a Catholic.

Elizabeth turned down Philip II´s proposal of marriage, ended the war with France and made England Protestant again.

KEEPING THE PEACE

In 1559 Elizabeth was put on charge of the Church of England.

Everyone must attend the services, these were in English but they kept some Catholic traditions.

She was trying to keep both Catholics and Protestants happy.

If Catholics did not go to church Elizabeth fined them by ordering the JUSTICE OF PEACE (JP): each village had to keep a record of those who missed church´s services. The JP kept law and order in the parishes in his area, they were chosen by the Privy Council ( Elizabeth´s advisers) who usually gave the job to the richest landowner in the area. The JP were not paid, They acted as spies for the Privy Council.

PRIEST´S ATTEMPT

In 1580 the pope ordered the Jesuits (Catholic priest) to make England Catholic again but they were captured, tortured and put to death as traitors.

Traitors executed way: Let the traitor be hanged, taken down alive,

his bowels taken out and burned before his face, and quartered.

THE SPANISH ARMADA IN 1588 The English were better at everything than

the Spanish and this was the main reason why the Armada was beaten. This story was repeated by the Elizabethans to kept the national honour and finally it grew into a myth.

New evidence was found that changed the views about the armada.

Archaeological divers have recovered objects from the wrecks of the Spanish ships and some historians have used Spanish account in the Armada.

Historians are constantly making new interpretation about what happened in 1588
