Magnus has kicked off his stud career in memorable fashion with Imprimis running

a memorable half length second in the Listed $100,000 Herald Sun SuperRacing Stakes (1000m) at Flemington in Victoria’s first 2YO race of the season.

Imprimis led for most of the journey but found the highly vaunted Cambiaso a

tad too strong on the wire. Connections have already declared the winner to be a leading hope for next year’s Blue Diamond and, naturally enough, Imprimis’ trainer Mick Cerchi was very pleased with the performance of his filly and clearly harbours further stakes aspirations for his $55,000 weanling purchase.

Imprimis (pictured below, rails) has certainly been built for speed: her sire Magnus was a Group One winning sprinter who campaigned on three continents AND is a half brother to the dam of world champion Black Caviar, while Imprimis’ dam, Tendency, is by

one of the most precocious influences of recent times in Rory’s Jester.

But as impressive as Imprimis was, also keep in mind the performance of Magnusificent, who appears to have the ability to live up to his name.

And, while Magnusificent’s finishing position doesn’t reveal much – the race replay certainly did.

Seemingly a spent force with 200m to go and at the very rear of the field, jockey Craig Williams peeled Magnusificent around the other runners and the colt flew home to finish just over three lengths off the winner.

SPRING 20112

If you’ll excuse the pun, Written Tycoon is rapidly gaining prestige throughout South East Asia.

Certainly the Champion Australian First Season Sires’ stocks have grown considerably across the Tasman in recent weeks via the deeds of Roger James flyer, Prestigious Miss, who is now shaping as one of the finest 3YO fillies in New Zealand.

A winner as a 2YO in June, Prestigious Miss grabbed the eye (and some black type) with a brilliant third to Anabandana in the Gold Trail Stakes-G3 at Hawkes Bay in mid September.

It was a super run given that she was still running last well into the straight and was peeling ground off them with every stride at the finish.

New Zealand’s Champion 2YO with dual Group One victories, Anabandana has now won her last five on the trot.

However, but it was Prestigious Miss’ second to Antonio Lombardo in the recent Hawkes Bay Guineas-G2 that has really put the stamp on her potential.

Prestigious Miss was shuffled back in the run and seven lengths to make up in the run home and didn’t really see daylight until the final furlong. Super effort when you consider Antonio Lombardo is probably NZ’s finest colt.

But it’s not only Prestigious Miss flying the flag for her sire. The aptly named Masthead produced a cracking effort in the Urbis Roman Consul Stakes-G2 to just miss by a head behind hot favourite, Foxwedge.

The banner horse for Written Tycoon as a juvenile, Masthead has furnished into an athletic 3YO whose two runs this season have produced a fourth (beaten less than two lengths) behind Sepoy in the Danehill Stakes-G2 at Flemington and Saturday’s second at Randwick.

Written Tycoon’s other recent highlights include Trump and Peter Morgan’s promising youngster, Printed, but it’s also the ‘form’ of runners in South East Asia that could prove to be very timely.

Speedy filly Xicar won at her most recent outing in Korea, scooting away to score over 1300m, while in early September, Power Tycoon, scored in thrilling fashion over 1050m at Taipa in Macau.

It certainly augurs well for the Gold Coast Magic Millions National Horses in Training Sale on 19-20 October with Eliza Park presenting five Written Tycoon 2YOs to an audience which will undoubtedly include a sizeable buying bench from South East Asia. And New Zealand. And Randwick. And Flemington!

If Saturday’s win at Morphettville is anything to go by, Written Tycoon’s debutante Alezan Thunder

certainly lives up to her name.

Alezan is French for ‘chestnut’ and the Mark Kavanagh trained youngster certainly kicked up a storm over the 1000m, winning by almost three lengths.

Purchased for $55,000 by Kavanagh at this year’s Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, Alezan Thunder was bred by Farooq Breeding in NSW and is now

part-owned by Harry Perks, one of South Australia’s most successful owners.

Interestingly, Alezan Thunder is out of the Thunder Gulch mare Elysian Thunder, whose name is something on an oxymoron, given that the definition of Elysian is blissful, delightful.

Still, if the filly can keep going the way she started, she’s bound to bring a lot of bliss to her connections.

It’s worth noting that Written Tycoon didn’t get his first winner until February

and yet ended up Champion Australian First Season Sire in 2010/11, yet he’s now pulled out a winner in one of the first juvenile races of the season: and a good winner too!

Interestingly, Written Tycoon is now equal second by winners on the Second Season Sires’ list with five individual winners.

HIT SALE:PREPARE FOR GOLD

The Magic Millions National

Horses in Training Sale continues to grow in stature and is now an internationally respected source of quality racehorses.

Eliza Park General Manager Racing and Group One winning trainer, Sue Ellis, has prepared an outstanding draft of 11 youngsters which are being consigned to be the Gold Coast for the two-day sale which kicks off next Wednesday (19 October).

Among the Eliza Park draft you will find four two year olds by Champion Australian First Season Sire, Written Tycoon, two by Champion Australian General Sire Lonhro, youngsters by proven sources such as Mossman, Tale of the Cat and Good Journey, plus likely types by rising stallions such as Shinzig (whose oldest progeny have just turned two), Nadeem and Excellent Art.

And of course there is a filly by Bel Esprit, sire of world champion sprinter, Black Caviar.

“The majority of pedigrees are complimented by solid – and precocious – black type families, but most importantly I believe Eliza Park has assembled a draft which will have great appeal to buyers seeking quality athletes,” Sue explains. “I would like to take this opportunity to stress to potential buyers that our horses have not been put under pressure throughout the education process. We allow them to develop at their own rate, dependent on their individual level of maturity.”

The Eliza Park draft will be available for inspection from Friday (14 October).

SHARKBITE& PRESSDAY– IT’S ALL RELATIVE

Sharkbite has been hugely popular since arriving at Eliza Park last year, covering 130

mares and is again a busy boy this spring.

Little wonder really when you take into account his racetrack performance, athleticism and fee.

But the thing that sorts this wheat from the chaff is Sharkbite’s incredible pedigree: quite aside from the fact that he’s a son of perennial champ Redoute’s Choice, his granddam is a half sister to Hasili, broodmare of the year in Europe and producer of no less than six stakes winners … Champions Banks Hill, Intercontinental and Champs Elysee spring to mind, while another is Danehill’s boom sire Dansili. Closely related too is Leroidesanimaux, sire of 2011 Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom.

It’s one of the most recognisable pedigrees in the Stud Book but one thing you might not know is that 4-time Group winner Pressday (including BRC TJ Smith Classic-G1 at two) hails from the same family.

In fact, Pressday – who will stand alongside Sharkbite at Eliza Park when his racing days are done – introduces a whole new branch with his close relations including Group One winner The Mighty Lions and 2YO stakes winner Dinner Date.

Given the patronage to Sharkbite over the past two seasons, Pressday is sure to be a welcome addition to the stallion ranks.

Congratulations to Sharkbite’s owner, Jonathan Munz, who also pays the feed bills for brilliant performer, Rekindled Interest.

Trained by Jim Conlan, Rekindled Interest won the Group Two Feehan Stakes at Moonee Valley on 10 September and is likely to make his presence felt in the coming weeks.

Another son of Redoute’s Choice, Rekindled Interest has now won $464,700 from his three wins and a stakes placing: a great result for Munz who has contributed greatly to the industry as an owner, breeder and administrator.

SPRING 20114

In recognition of the important role that Asia plays in the operation’s global strategy, it

was announced this week that John Jeffs would become Eliza Park’s Asia representative, commencing 1 October.

The former racecourse manager at Sydney’s two leading racetracks,

Randwick and Rosehill, and – for a number of years – managing course activities in Hong Kong, John has also played a pivotal role for both Eliza Park and Tyreel Stud at major sales.

“We’re very excited about the appointment and it’s a step forward for Eliza Park in the region,” Eliza Park CEO Cameron Croucher enthused. “JJ is at the front line for us at sales and, during his time as the ‘meet and greet’, he’s liaised with the buyers of many million dollar horses.

“Importantly though, JJ is widely known throughout South East Asia and Australasia and, for that matter, there’s very few industry people he doesn’t say g’day to.

“JJ will be based in Australia – and of course remain as our front man at sales – but will regularly visit Hong Kong, Singapore and Macau …

and assist with the expansion into mainland China.

(John Jeffs has just returned from a visit to Singapore where he espoused the virtues of the upcoming National Magic Millions Horses in Training Sale and – naturally enough – Eliza Park’s exciting draft!)

“JJ, naturally, will have the support of our burgeoning racing division which has built up a reputation with Asian clients through the export of ready to run horses and via our breaking in and pre-training facilities.

“In such a competitive marketplace, liaison with Asia requires a person with credibility and professionalism – on that score, John Jeffs fits the bill perfectly.”

John Jeffs can be contacted on 0407 463 626.

FIVE PROPERTIES– LIMITLESS OPPORTUNITIES!

People are often amazed when informed of the breadth and scope of the Eliza Park operation.

Sure, most Aussie breeding enthusiasts are fully aware of the 12-strong stallion roster: proven sires such as Bel Esprit, Statue of Liberty and Written Tycoon speak for themselves, while extensive marketing has highlighted the attributes of those ‘waiting in the wings’.

And yes, the frequency of visits to our ‘headquarters’ at Kerrie – be it for open days, walk ins, stallion inspections – has the majority of clients well versed in what’s available on Eliza Park’s 800 acres at the foot of the Macedon Ranges.

But Eliza Park is more … much more. Eliza Park now encompasses five properties throughout Victoria and offers every conceivable service for the breeder and/or racehorse owner.

Importantly, these services are carried out by hand picked professionals and, particularly in this ‘climate’, competitively.

Firstly, the aforementioned Eliza Park Kerrie. This is the hub of the operation with all administration handled on the property, as well as housing our 12 stallions and catering to a flourishing racing division, which now educates and pre-trains horses on behalf of leading owners and trainers.

Across the road from Kerrie is Eliza Park Nardoo, which helps alleviate much of the traffic at the main farm by spelling racehorses and agisting dry mares.

And now, Eliza Park has THREE properties in the North East of Victoria, each with specific functions.

Eliza Park Nagambie – with its tremendous facilities and Goulburn Valley river frontage – is charged with the task of raising young horses … a responsibility not taken lightly as here much of the groundwork is laid for their future on the racetrack.

The purpose built Eliza Park Smithfield is used exclusively for preparing sales horses – with over 150 horses annually offered up for public auction.

And, last but certainly not least, is the recently acquired Eliza Park Northwood where, this season, some 250 mares will foal down. The majority of whom will then be ‘walked on’ to Eliza Park Kerrie via our transport fleet.

The scale of Eliza Park is too vast to be adequately covered in this particular forum, but and interactive PDF will soon be made available to provide you

with the full picture.

But the bottom line is, if you’re in the market for any aspect of breeding and racing, Eliza Park is merely a phone call away … 03 5428 5168.

– LIMITLESS OPPORTUNITIES!

There’s not another farm in Australia that has the diversity and depth of services within the business model … an incredible operation.

DON COSSACK– AN OFFER YOU CAN’T REFUSE

On the hunt for a readymade racehorse? Then look no further than Don Cossack.

A flashy son of Eliza Park’s foundation stallion, Desert Sun – sire of Sunline and damsire of Black Caviar – Don Cossack hails from the family of Group One winners Lord Reims, Lotteria, Miss Margaret, Dreamaway, Belotta, Rocket Racer and Taatletail.

Standing 16.2 hands, Don Cossack has already been broken in and will be trained at Eliza Park by Group One winning mentor Sue Ellis, who had this to say about the flashy chestnut: “He (Don Cossack) is a lovely type of colt. A great advantage for potential investors is that he is already educated, has been fully vet

tested (with clean x-rays and scope) and, importantly, is showing plenty of ability. He’s a nice horse in the making.”

This is a pedigree with an ideal mix of precocity and stamina. While Desert Sun is the sire of Champion racemare, Sunline, Group One winners La Bella Dama and Our Egyptian Raine – and is the damsire of World Champion

Racehorse Black Caviar – he is also a noted sire of 2YOs with his juvenile stakes winners including

Gold in Dubai.

Inaugural winner of the Blue Sapphire Stakes-LR at Caulfield (taken out the following year by Black Caviar) and a recent winner of the Ipswich Cup-LR as a

5YO, Gold in Dubai is a shining

example

of the Desert Suns who show early speed yet train on.

Furthermore, Don Cossack is out of the Dance Floor mare Radiant Dancer who has produced both the Group winning Kiwi, Our Small Town Boy (also by a Danzig line stallion) and the sprinter Spartan Dancer, while the rest of this black type family tells a similar tale: Rocket Racer (7 wins, 1200m to 3200m), Lotteria (8 wins, 1200m to 1600m), NZ Filly of the Year, Taatletail (6 wins, 950m to 2000m), Miss Margaret (7 wins – 2 at 2 – from 1000m to 2500m) and, of course, Lord Reims (13 wins, 1200m to 3200m).

For a more comprehensive look at Don Cossack’s pedigree, plus a video of him working at Eliza Park, visit www.elizapark.com.au

Update: Sue Ellis reports that Don Cossack is now back in work and is aiming to start the colt early in the new year. Don Cossack is to be syndicated into a 10 share partnership ($5,500 inc. GST per share) and for further information phone Sue Ellis on 0407 517 324. But be quick … there’s only a couple of shares remaining.

SPRING 2011 7

From a breeding perspective, Bel Esprit has been studied every which way: pedigree,

performance, sale ring commerciality, colour, sex, what he likes for breakfast … you name it.

One study which hasn’t been performed thus far – well, at least until Champion Picks came along – was how Bel Esprit progeny fared at the tote.

We sometimes forget that the punting dollar is what makes the wheels of the thoroughbred industry turn and it stands to reason that a study of a sire’s progeny – based on track ‘profitability’ – has some merit.

David Duffield of Champion Picks takes up the story:

We (Champion Picks) recently looked at Australia’s best trainers and jockeys for punters to follow, but have never really analysed sires in any depth.

Breeding is a much discussed topic in horse racing circles, but almost never from the perspective of a punter. Commentators focus on sire earnings, winners and black type but as punters, wouldn’t it be good to know how profitable our top sires are?

The top 10 sires of last season (ranked by earnings) are listed in the following table, but we’ve added a column for Profit On Turnover:

Bel Esprit had a phenomenal year for his followers with his progeny winning 13 cents on the dollar. That makes him a winner of the sires profitability table with as much authority as his mighty mare Black Caviar shows in demoralizing her rivals.

Following the offspring of the other 9 leading sires would have lost 9 cents on the dollar.

No surprise then that the standout sire in the under 1800m distance range was Bel Esprit at better than 14% profit. High Chaparral progeny also recorded a profit, albeit from much less runners than the others.

Hopefully this article has given a little insight into a neglected punting angle. Because while I don’t suggest blindly backing Bel Esprit progeny, I will suggest that the best punting edges are to be found in two areas.

Firstly, by taking a contrarian approach and debunking many of the racing myths that are no longer (or possibly never have been) true.

The second area is related to the topic of this article and it boils down to accessing and analyzing information that isn’t readily available to the everyday punter.

BEL ESPRIT … A S A F E B E T !… A S A F E B E T !

Arion Pedigrees reveals that Bel Esprit has produced winners in nine

countries: Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Korean, Macau, Malaysia, South Africa and the Philippines (indeed, in the last two mentioned, Bel Esprit has a 100% winners to runners record!).

However, we only found out today that Bel Esprit also has a winner in Iran: and not just any winner either.

Two years ago, at the Gold Coast National Horses in Training Sale, Eliza Park sold a Bel Esprit filly from Jill Mary to Iranian buyer, Reza Allahdadi, along with a God’s Own filly from Sun Maid.

Well, in turns out that the God’s Own has won several races, while the Bel Esprit is the No. 1 horse in Iran for the second year running!

Iran racing might seem a long way from the members’ enclosure at Flemington or Randwick, but fans are as keen as mustard and I’m pretty sure there would be a few Aussie tracks over the moon if they could attract the same sort of crowds.

CLICK HERE for an overview of Iranian racing … I especially liked the clip on the bloke who said he’s been going to Gonbad-e Qabus racecourse since 1974 is yet to leave the track a winner (must be a Middle

Eastern cousin of sorts!).

SPRING 20118

Jason Warren has been around horses most of his life.

Involved with the ‘showies’ since he was a tacker, Jason landed a job with Eliza Park “in the early days” riding work and breaking in horses for the stud’s fledgling racing division.

Plying his trade at Eliza Park for a

couple of seasons, it was during this time that a smart 2YO by the name of Bel Esprit was leaving his mark on

Melbourne tracks with five straight victories including the Group One Blue Diamond Stakes.

Jason watched the colt’s progress with great interest and, naturally enough, was very pleased when Eliza

Park announced it would stand Bel Esprit at the completion of his racing career.

However, keen to strike out on his own, Jason took out a trainers’ licence in his own right, building a small but loyal band of owners. He

also broke in and pre-trained a number of horses for the Asian market on behalf of bloodstock agent,

Robert Roulston.

Jason remembers fondly that his first city winner as

a trainer was by Bahamian Bounty, one of the first stallions to

stand at Eliza Park.

Although he’d gotten amongst the winners, Jason determined that he still had a bit of learning to do

and secured a job with champion trainer, Lee Freedman (“a

tremendous experience”).

Foreman for the Freedmans during the halcyon days of Makybe Diva, Jason

alternated between the stable at Rye and, somewhat presciently,

the operation’s pre-training division … Denistoun Park (a 70 acre property within a stone’s throw of Mornington racecourse).

Eventually, in 2006, Jason decided to have another crack at the training caper and, just last year, purchased Denistoun Park as his base.

As they say in the classics, Jason hasn’t looked back: “I wanted to

give myself every possible chance to learn as much as I could about my craft. I don’t think you could ask for any more than to be working for and tutored by the best in the business. Although I have my own way of training horses, there are definitely lessons I’ve learned from Lee that I will apply to my own training philosophies,” Jason pointed out at the time.

Some five years down the track and Jason has around 50 in work and 20 in full training – some of which are really putting the 35 year old on everyone’s radar.

Rhythm in Paris is a good example – although she only started on eight occasions, Jason extracted four wins from the mare including last year’s Group Three Cockram Stakes, defeating 2011 Group One winner Response.

(Jason purchased a Magnus half brother to Rhythm in Paris at the 2011 Melbourne Premier yearling sale for $80,000: one of two Magnus 2YOs in his stable).

Jason also recalls, fondly, the deeds of Viking Turf Belle, who won close to $200k from five wins and eight placings, including a third in the Group Two Blazer Stakes at Flemington

JASON WARREN

Applying the polish to Bel Esprit flyer, Bel Sprinter, Jason Warren is one of Victoria’s most promising trainers … and guess where he got his start?

Yes, you could say that I’m a fan …“ ”

ASTRONOMER ROYAL I S A S T A R R E C R U I THere’s a little trivia for you …

Astronomer Royal is a senior post in the royal household,

originally appointed in 1675 to “apply himself with the most exact care and diligence to the rectifying the tables of the motions of the heavens, and the places of the fixed stars, so as to find out the so-much desired longitude of places for the perfecting the art of navigation”.

The current Astronomer Royal (and only the 15th in the past 336 years) is Martin Rees, the Baron Rees of Ludlow and we understand he gets a 100 quid a year to go with the title. Whether that also entitles him to read the Queen her horoscope every morning is unknown, but we can say – with considerable

confidence – that sending a mare to our Astronomer Royal will ensure that you’re far better rewarded than poor old Marty!

After all, Astronomer Royal – the equine version – gained plenty

of notoriety on the track winning the sire making

French 2000 Guineas-G1 and running a memorable third

in the St James’ Palace Stakes-G3.

Being a son of the legendary Danzig (46 G1 winners) from an outstanding family hasn’t hurt his prospects either.

So much so that mares in foal to Astronomer Royal have sold up to $240,000 while his first crop of weanlings – presented at major sales earlier this year – were sold for as high as $90,000 … over 10 times service fee.

Not surprisingly, Astronomer Royal has been very popular since arriving at Eliza Park and will cover well over a 100 mares this spring. A definite star of the future.

I S A S T A R R E C R U I T

three years ago. Coronation Diva was another – five wins and three placings from only 11 outings.

But it’s Jason’s current stable star, Bel Sprinter, that could be the one to elevate the trainer to the top floor.

Bel Esprit’s sprinter won his first four straight – a victory on debut at his home track last December was

followed up by scores at Moonee Valley, Flemington and Caulfield in July and August, before being a moral

beaten (as favourite) in the Group Three Bobbie Lewis at Flemington in early September.

Bel Sprinter cost himself victory by shifting ground at a vital stage when second to Group One winner Lone Rock but he lost no fans with the performance: indeed, the Bobbie Lewis was of Group One quality with runners including 3-time SW Danzylum

($699k), Golden Slipper winner Phelan Ready, G1 winner Toorak Toff, dual SW Temple of Boom, 3-time SW Dubleanny, Flemington Group winner Elusive Touch, dual SW and G1 placed Chasm, Group winner Lord Pyrus,

3-time SW Doubtful Jack ($570k), last season’s dual G1 winner Yosei, G1 winner Aloha, GW and G1 runnerup Gold Salute and G1 winner Eagle Falls.

So, when Jason Warren tells you that he’s aiming Bel Sprinter – currently spending his days in the paddock – at the Group One Oakleigh Plate in February, it’s hardly an idle boast.

So, you like the Bel Esprits then Jason? “Absolutely. Bel Sprinter is a very sound horse and all the Bel Esprits seem to run … I also trained High Esprit who won a race at Sandown and I’ve got a couple of nice two year old fillies by Bel Esprit, one of which has won a couple of trials.

“Yes, you could say that I’m a fan …”

We thinks an even bigger fan if his star Bel outsprints them in the Oakleigh Plate!

SUPER SAVERS TOP TWOClose relations to 2010 Kentucky

Derby winner and Eliza Park shuttler, Super Saver, have

topped two of the world’s best thoroughbred sales.

First cab off the rank was the $1.2 million paid for the yearling half brother to Super Saver at the prestigious Fasig-Tipton’s Saratoga Select in August, catching the eye and considerable financial wallop of John Ferguson, buyer for Sheikh Mohammed’s Darley operation.

“Obviously the mare (Supercharger) has produced a Kentucky Derby winner (Super Saver), but not only that, it’s a fantastic family,” Ferguson declared.

Then just to top it off, a half sister to Super Saver’s dam, Supercharger, produced a $1.4 million yearling (by AP Indy) to lead the way at Keeneland’s marathon September Yearling Sale.

Regarded as the world’s premier bloodstock auction, Keeneland September again gathered all the cracks to the fray, but it was Bob Feld – purchaser of multiple Breeders’ Cup winners – who held sway overall.

“There aren’t going to be too many more AP Indys with that kind of pedigree! He’s priceless as far as I’m concerned”.

With no less than seven strains of the legendary La Troienne, Super Saver boasts a real stallion’s pedigree: considered by many to be the “first

family of American thoroughbred breeding”.

After attracting an initial book of 140 plus mares at WinStar Farm in Kentucky – 100 of which were either stakes winners or stakes producers – Super Saver had the distinction of covering two Group One winners in his first six hours ‘on the job’ at Eliza Park.

A stakes record setting 2YO before winning the run for the roses last year, Super Saver is clearly the best value Kentucky Derby winner standing in Australia.
