The Turnaround in Thenmozhi’s Life

Name of the Student : M Thenmozhi

Age : 11

Gender : Female

Fathers Name : Manikandan

Father’s Occupation : Coolie

Mother’s Name : (Late) Padma

Previous Educational Qualification: 3rd Standard

Duration of Idle time /Dropout period: 6 Months

Current Status : 6th Standard, Govt. Hr. Sec. School, Mathur

Thenmozhi Manikandan hails from Tiruttani block, Mathur panchayat of Tiruvallur district,

Tamil Nadu. The second child in the family, Thenmozhi has an elder brother and a younger

sister. Her father’s sole daily wage earnings were barely enough for the family to even

afford three meals a day. A few years ago, tragedy struck when Thanmozhi’s mother

passed away and the complete responsibility of caring for and providing for the family lay

on her father’s shoulders.

When Thenmozhi’s mother passed away, the

entire family was plunged into grief and

consequently, Thenmozhi dropped out of

school while in 3rd grade in 2013. Thenmozhi

then became engaged in sibling care – caring for her younger sister, which she continued

for 6 months as a dropout child. During one field visit, HiH India field staff identified her

and subsequently intervened, counseled and persuaded her father to consent to continuing

her education. After much persuasion and counseling from HiH India, Thenmozhi joined 4th

standard at Dhamenari RSTC in the year 2014 and was mainstreamed to 6th standard at

Govt. Hr. Sec. School, Mathur in the year 2017.

She is Immensely grateful to HiH India for the way her life has turned out from staying

indoors to studying in a Government School. She aspires to “become a teacher and help

other poor children in her community, study”.

From Weaving Baskets to Chasing Dreams

Name of the Student : S. Mani

Age : 14

Gender : Male

Fathers Name : Sankar

Father’s Occupation : Weaver

Mother’s Name : Kokkila

Mother’s Occupation : Weaver

Previous Educational Qualifications: 6th Standard

Duration of Idle time /Dropout period: 6 Months

Current Status : 8th Standard, Govt. Hr. Sec. School, Mamandur

Mani Sankar hails from a very poor background, born to parents in the weaving industry in

Podhathurpettai Village, Tiruvallur. Mani was one among many children caught in the rut

of child labour in the weaving industry. Mani has three siblings, his elder sister is studying

in 9th standard and his younger sister is studying in 1st standard.

While in his 6th grade, Mani developed an intense dislike for the education he was

receiving and decided to quit. With no one to mentor him and advise on the right way

ahead, he began to work with his parents in the

weaving industry, supporting the family income.

Six months of his hard work paid very little, but

for his poor family, even the little he brought in,

was a lot. During regular field visits, Mani was

identified by the HiH India field team who convinced him to continue his education

through regular meetings and home visits, interacting and counseling his parents and other

family members.

Eventually, Mani agreed and joined 7th standard at Dhamenari RSTC in the year 2016. At

the RSTC he discovered a love for learning that he never had before. After the one year

RSTC experience, Mani has now been successfully mainstreamed into 8th standard at

Mamandur Government Higher Secondary School. He dreams of becoming a police officer,

a dream that he can now hope to realize thanks to HiH India. Mani and his parents are

grateful to all the RSTC teachers who have played a vital role in shaping his life.
