many hogunteers for her dedication ofendless hours and years serving the com-munity and hamlet of Elgin. Porkrigi-nally from Weimer, just outsideLaGrange, Artiemoved eastwardfrom Austin in1970, and has madeElgin her homes o o o w e e e thome. She workedfor 30 years at theIRS in Austin, andnow 15 years atFirst National Bankin Elgin, where shehopes to retirewhen she turns100. She has beenbooking bands atthe SPJST hall for 20 years, worked withRelay for Life for 9 years, president of

KJT Catholic Insurance, serves as a Eu-charistic minister with the CatholicChurch, member of the Chamber ofCommerce, and formerly with HermannSons in Austin. Quite often you will findher dancing the two-hoof or hoof waltz-ing at the SPJST, and was in Dancingwith the Elgin Stars 2010.

She is the proud sow of three pigletsand one porknificent grandpiglet namedTaylor.

Charlotte SwensonCharlotte Swenson is a pork-pular ham-

inee for the 25th annual Hogeye Festival.She was raised in Elgin, graduated fromElgin High and has called Elgin home formany years. Shewas one of the orig-inators of the Hog-eye Festival andmade the first KingHog cape. Shespent the earlyyears of Hogeye aschairperson of theentertainment forthe festival. Herfather, GordonSwenson, startedthe Pork Cook-offand her sister, Jan

Swenson, has co-chaired it with DougPrinz since Gordon’s death in 2000.

Charlotte left Elgin for a few years anddeclared herself the unofficial HAMbas-sador, extolling the greatness of herhome town nationwide. She is on theboard of directors for the River ValleyFarmers Market, the co-founder of theElgin Grow Project and, along with herpartner, Tim Fender, owns Food forThought Permaculuture Garden, a localsustainable farm.

She and Tim have 3 grown children, twothat live in Elgin. Jacob and his wifeBrittany Maynard, Dawndee Fender andTyler Fender, of Missouri. She is the veryproud grandsow of Jacob Maynard, Jr., 3years old, and Zecheriah Crawford, 4years old.

Leticia Martinez is a sowpreme hamdi-date for this Sowlver Hammiversary thisyear at the Hogeye Festival. She haslived in Elgin for 43 years and been co-owner of Martinez Bookkeeping for 25years.

Many of you know her at the HogeyeFestival as Carnicia Porkinez Alegria ,her Elgin Sowpreme name since 2006.Since becoming a Sowpreme she hashosted many a soooweeet gathering at

her home, known otherwise as Sow-preme Central byher sow sisters,where she fattensthem up for theirannual porkfor-mances, adornstheir fun propswith swinestonesand feathers, andalso feeds theBACA bikers be-fore they ride theSows in on theirHarley’s. Leticiahas served withthe Historic Re-view Board, Economic DevelopmentCommittee, Chamber of Commerce, andDancing with the Elgin Stars 2011. Shehas hosted an international pigletthrough the Rotary Club to stay in herpigsty, and hosts 10-15 senior athletesfrom Mexico for many years for the ElginLion’s Club.

Her warm heart donates and loans var-ious items for events with Cattlemen forCancer, and Dancing with the ElginStars. She and her husband, Frank, haveraised five piglets through the Elginschools, and are now proud grandhogs ofsix grandpiglets.Charlotte Swenson

Elgin might be known for its sausage andbarbecue, but the folks around here knowhow to satisfy a sweet tooth. Area cookswill show off their skills during the annualHogeye Dessert Contest, set for Oct. 27 atEl Maguey Restaurant.

Entries must be submitted between 9a.m. and 10 a.m. Registration forms areavailable at www.hogeyefestival.com.There are two categories: pies and cakes.Judging will take place that morning withwinners to be announced at 1 p.m. at theGazebo stage.

Contest organizer Megan Stuart Ramirezexpects a fun-filled hogalicious eventbased on contests from years past.

“There is always some dessert that noone can decide what it is,” she said.“Cake? Pie? What is that? Sugar inducedcoma?” The craziest themed entry so far?A fully proportioned and decorated “pig”cake. “It did not win, but it was incredibly

cute!”Megan loves the enthusiasm of the

cooks, the judges and the people servingdesserts.

“Everyone has a great time! The serverstend to be the funniest because they aretrying to serve 24-plus desserts at a timeto two tables (Youth and Adult entries)and they take it very seriously.

“Everyone must have a little part ofeverything included in the dessert, sosometimes they are scooping up little bitsof crust or icing for each plate. I hear, ‘Dowe cut it? Scoop it? I need a spoon!’ On theother hand, diehard desert lovers will tellthe servers not to remove the dessert theyreally liked (but could not take anotherbite because they still had 10 to go). By thetime it is done, the servers are covered invarious clumps of sugary delight! My otherfavorite part is that we award trophies tothe best judges. Only a few judges return

year after year, the dedicated sugarholics.This is not a contest for the weak!”

Megan also enjoys dressing the judges inaprons — most of the guys ask if they re-ally have to (they must) — and the funnyfaces the judges make when they don’t re-ally like something. Screams of “WATER!”are sometimes heard.

The dessert contest is the brainchild ofMegan Stuart Ramirez and Sydney In-galls.

“After judging the ribs one year, we won-dered why we were limited to meat andbeans,” Megan said. “We needed fluff,artistic decoration and sugar (aka, MarthaStewart) in the competition! After the firsttwo years of the contest, we decided weneeded a Youth Division, not only fordessert entries, but to judge them. Wehave help serving from Veronica Gann,Erin Ramirez, Erin Pugh Flores andStacey Dunkin. Our significant others

come to cheer us on and watch the fun. Icannot thank El Maguey enough for all oftheir support and space for this contest!”

What about the aprons? “This was allthought of by Sydney Ingalls. She had sev-eral vintage aprons and thought thiswould be fun. My mom also had severalold aprons that she gave me for the con-test. The Lion’s Thrift Store has been ahuge help for us in creating our supply.Each of us that help to run the dessert con-test has their favorite apron to wear.

This year, some of the organizers arevying for the first place apron that theyhave been working on for the past year (Iguess this means a new trophy!). So lookfor baubles, beads and sequins!

“And at the end, we all sit back and eatsomething without sugar and talk aboutwhat just happened! So much fun! Andthen we go enjoy the rest of Hogeye, ourmost favorite of all festivals!”

They will turn the cowout at 4 p.m. The winner will be announced at 4:30 p.m. — maybe. It depends on the cow.There is one grand prize winner, plus the surrounding squares win because Splatter Mat-ters. Tickets are for sale throughout the month of October and at Hogeye on Main Streetin front of the Food Court or from wandering patty sales people. Elgin Caregivers horseshoes andwasher tournaments offer a chance foreveryone to compete and support a greatcause.

Elgin Caregivers is a non-profit organi-zation with a mission to help older adultsmaintain independence and enhancetheir quality of life by providing supportservices such as transportation to med-ical appointments and other importantdestinations, chores, friendly visits or re-ferrals.

This is the 2nd annual tournament andwill be held in the vacant lot next to FirstState Bank and across from Elgin CityHall on Main Street.

Registration can be completed in ad-vance on the Hogeye Festival website, orthe morning of the 27th on site.

Elgin Caregivers hosts a variety offundraising events throughout the yearin order to reach a greater variety of peo-ple for both funding support and to re-cruit volunteers.

Kim Tabor is organizing these tourna-ments for Hogeye and has helped withthe organizing and running of tourna-

ments in the past. Kim shares, “My cousin was the Cap-

tain of Team Three Allen Miracles — AMarch of Dimes Family Team — for manyyears, and we hosted Washer Tourna-ments as a way to raise money for ourteam. They were always a greatfundraiser and a lot of fun for all in-volved.”

If you’ve never played before, grab afriend and sign up! The goal is to raisemoney for a good cause and have a littlefun in the process.

The tournaments at Hogeye for washersand horseshoes are team events. Whilemost people will register as a team, if youdo not have a partner please feel free toregister, and the Caregivers will matchyou up the day of the tournament.

These tournaments need an audience,too — so bring a chair and join in on thefun as a spectator!

The Lindsy Kay Wing Memorial Chil-dren’s Pet Parade will kick off the 25th an-nual Hogeye Festival on Saturday Oct. 27.

Porkticipants will gather at the newCommunity Stage between City Café andProsperity Bank for registration at 8:30a.m., with judging to begin at 9 a.m.sharp!

All costumes must be safe and all petsmust be on a leash. Please bring your bag-gies for cleaning up after these furryfriends and let organizers know in advanceif you will bring any large animals.

Porkticipants are separated into agegroups for judging as well as hometownand out of town and each group is awarded1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. Winnersreceive prizes and everyone gets a chanceto win a U. S. Savings Bond.

Once judging is complete reigning KingHog, Josh Hausladen, will lead the paradethrough the festival up and down MainStreet.

Being close to Halloween, organizersknow that children have costumes theywant to wear early or wear more thanonce.

Rosanna Church Abreo organized manyof the children’s parades in the early yearsof the festival. Theresa McShan has organ-ized the parade for the past 17 years.

Theresa said, “This is the highlight of thefestival for the children of Elgin and sur-rounding Bastrop County area. Thanks tovolunteers and especially those who comeback year after year, everything runssmoothly.”

For Kay and Jordan Wing the event wasa family tradition every year. Lindsy andCuyler looked forward to dressing up, andKay was involved with the Main Street pro-gram.

In 1993, Lindsy died suddenly and as thecommunity rallied around this family,Rosanna suggested dedicating the paradein her memory. The Wing family providesa savings bond to the winner each year.

Over the years the parade has had par-ticipants from Taylor, Round Rock,Pflugerville and Houston. On average, 60children participate in the event and mostbring a family pet or stuffed animal.

Theresa says, “I entered my children inthe parade prior to my chairing the event.Seeing the smiles on the children's facesand the proud parents makes this a won-derful event.”

Free shuttle service will be available atthe Park & Ride on Highway 95 North.The Park & Ride is on the corner ofMain Street & Highway 95 North (at the

end of Elgin Memorial Park). Vehicles are being provided by Elgin

ISD and will run approximately every 15minutes during Festival hours, which are10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

For those with a steady hand and sureaim, the 24th Annual Hogeye Festivalwill have the “In a Pig’s Eye Dart Con-test” on Saturday, Oct. 27.

The contest will be 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. atRegulator’s Sports Bar & Grill, 202 SouthAvenue C.

Games will be 501 for Singles. Darts is a mindless social game. It takes

skill to do well but as long as you canthrow eight feet you can play. The num-bered games are very easy.

Just collect the most points per turn.Whoever can hit the highest numbers,thus collecting the points needed to

reach the goal number the quickest, willwin. It’s an inexpensive game and can beentertaining with strangers because youhave time between throws to visit withthe other players.

It’s a good game for relieving stress andforgetting about the day’s problems. Theregistration fee is $8. Winners will re-ceive trophies for 1st Place.

As you walk down the hall of the cityannex, you begin to get a clue that you areat Hogeye Central.

Once you enter the office of CommunityDevelopment Director Amy Miller or heradministrative assistant Lucretia Alvarez,you have no doubt that they are planningthe most porcine festival in all of centralTexas.

Posters of Hogeyes gone by and shelvesfilled with gifts and souvenirs of all thingspink and piggy gives one the sense thatPriscilla lives here too.

In preparation for the 25th anniversary,Amy, Forest Dennis and Keith Joesel, fes-tival co-chairs, have met weekly since earlyspring.

The weekly meetings produce pages ofaction items to be accomplished by thenext meeting. Forest says, “Amy listens tomy sometimes crazy suggestions and in-cludes them in the list of things to do.These items could range from a logisticsmeeting between Hogunteers and the pub-lic works department to consulting withthe graphic designer.”

Alicia Stoll, Parks and Recreation Man-ager, coordinates the Cow Patty Bingo ef-forts for Hogeye with the Friends of ElginParks. She frequently steps in to lend a

hand with festival details. Hogeye has a dedicated phone line,

email address and website for commentsand inquiries. These are all maintained bya host of city staff. In house productionand printing of Hogeye information, sort-ing checks coming in from vendors andsponsors and answering hundreds ofphone calls and walk-in customers involvesalmost all city staff in the front office.

The public works department, includingJoe Parten, Terry Fowler and the overallcrew provide extensive logistical supportto the festival. During the week of Hogeyethe crew works tirelessly to accomplish allof the set-up that is required in the down-town district.

Although the Hogeye Festival cannotoccur without an army of Hogunteers,Amy Miller and the rest of the city staffmake planning, preparation and executionof the festival run like clockwork. EdRivers, current Main Street Board Presi-dent, worked with organizing Hogeyetwenty five years ago.

“Due to the hard work by hundreds of in-dividuals over the last 25 years, peoplecome from all over Texas to visit Elgin andenjoy this award winning festival,” sharedEd Rivers.

City staff: the backboneof a really pig event

The 25th Annual Hogeye Festival willfeature a carnival, from Thursday, Oct. 25through Saturday, Oct. 27.

Thursday and Friday are family nightswith wristbands (must be 36” tall) for allyou can ride. The rides, games, lightsand music from the carousel add a fes-

tive feeling to downtown. The carnival will be located in the va-

cant lot next to El Maguey on SouthMain Street.

One of the most challenging parts ofthe Pearls Before Swine Art Show is find-ing a location and then incorporating thevariety of pieces of artwork from adultsand children.

“Weaving the show together withfundraising, an auction, and a commu-nity reception while working with volun-teers, artists, and teachers is challengingand deeply rewarding,” said Sarah Page,art show organizer.

The location for 2012 is 14 North MainStreet. Provided by Keith Newman, thislarge, open, bright space at the corner ofDepot and Main Streets will be a won-derful location for the show.

The Chamber of Commerce and MainStreet Board will host the Community

Reception for the art show on Thursday,Oct. 25 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. ThePeople's Choice Award will be deter-mined by the votes cast by those attend-ing the reception. The show is openFriday Oct. 26 and Saturday Oct. 27.

Three new volunteers, one from Elginand two from Bastrop will be judges.Sarah shared that these individuals areenthusiastic and knowledgeable aboutart and are either artists in their ownright or gallery owners.

The judging is a difficult task sincethere are always so many wonderful anddiverse pieces.

The judges will be selecting a 2-dimen-sional and a 3-dimensional winner fromamong the adult entries.

In the youth component, the judgeswill be selecting a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placefor elementary, middle and high schoolstudents.

The awards for the adults are mone-tary; the winning youth receive art sup-plies. Each child who participates willreceive a "merit pig.”

The art association notes that there aremany award-worthy entries! No oneshould ever allow themselves to be dis-couraged by not winning -- participationin the Pearls Before Swine Art Show isan award in itself!

The juried handmade arts and craftsvendors at Hogeye add a unique style tothe festival.

Cheryll Dennis, who has spent the lastthree years working as vendor chair saidshe enjoys working with all of the ven-dors because they are excited about com-ing.

She and her husband, Forest love to at-tend festivals, and when they go, they in-vite vendors who they think would be agreat fit for Hogeye.

In fact, they went to the Pecan StreetFestival a few weeks ago, and several ofthose vendors such as Artisan Element,which sells handmade ceramic yard art,

are now coming to Hogeye. Vendors must submit pictures of their

products for approval by the jury mem-bers.

This year’s festival will have a new lookin several areas. The Depot St. and MainStreet food area has been moved to theDepot Museum parking lot for a “food

court” feel. In addition to the commercial food ven-

dors, there will be the local non-profitvendors. The children’s Piglet Squarewill be moved to Depot Street and Veter-

Lone Star Car Show

CAR SHOW BRINGS EXTRA SHINE TO HOGEYE. Elgin-based Lone Star Car Club or-ganizes the car show held in conjunction with the Hogeye Festival. The show, benefittingthe Elgin Main Street Board and the Childrenʼs Advocacy Center will be held in an areabounded by Central Avenue and Depot Street from Avenue C to Avenue A in downtownElgin. More than 200 vehicles are expected, ranging from early vintage to highly modifiedpro street cars. Numerous activities are planned throughout the show: car engine blow-up, poker walk, door prizes, 50/50 raffle, food and beverages, and a custom (collectible) t-shirt. The Gordon Swenson Memorial BBQPork Cook-off will be held throughoutthe day on Saturday, Oct. 27.

Barbecuing will take place from 9 a.m.to 4:30 p.m. on Central Avenue, withawards to be given out at 5 p.m.

Doug Prinz has worked with the BBQPork Cook-off since Gordon Swensonstarted it 25 years ago. Over the years healways enjoyed participating in the cook-off. He and Jan Swenson, Gordon’sdaughter, do all the organizing. This yearDoug’s sister Sue Brasher is workingwith Doug on the organizing while Janconcentrates on treatments for breastcancer. Doug shared, that “Organizing itis really not that much fun. There is a lotof work to do before-hand that most con-testants don’t even think about.”

There are challenges to running a cook-

off, even one that is for “bragging rights”and not sanctioned by the InternationalBBQ Cookers Association. Cooks spenda lot of money on entry fees and on thecost of the meat they are preparing. Theywant to be assured they each have a fairshot on the judging table. Each andevery cook has their method of doingthings, and cooking times vary depend-ing on the size of the pork butt or othermeat. Doug commented, “While thiscook-off is not sanctioned, we do followI.B.C.A. rules as closely as we can andhave certified I.B.C.A. judges in overallcharge of the judging to make it fair foreveryone.” About 35 to 40 entries in thecook-off are in the beans category. En-tries can be any kind of dry bean; some

Rick and Shirley Bowlin , Logistics co-chairs, dedicate time throughout the yearto planning the Hogeye festival. Securingdonated gators, tents, and chairs, and re-serving traffic control, port a potties andstreet sweepers starts early in the year.Rick and Shirley work with signage,sponsor signs, locating all the activities inthe festival grounds, and electricity.Shirley shared, “back in the early years,Jonesy Jones put in his time taking careof logistics. Jonesy an the show from theseat of his pants, so to speak, since thefestival was new and growing every year.”

Then David Lanford, who with his trustysidekick, George Witta, took on the chorefor about 10 years. As the festival grew,more elements were added that had to beaddressed, which meant more volunteersand more help from the city crews, etc.Dan Bennett took logistics over the firstyear he and Dianne chaired the festivaland kept it up for several years. Danpassed the torch to Rick and ShirleyBowlin in 2010. As David said and all lo-gistics chairs agree, “The worst part ishoping you didn't forget something reallycritical, like port-a-potties!"

Logistics : Nuts and Bolts of Hogeye are spicy and some are mild. As with themeats, every cook has their own styleand favorite recipe.

Doug, Sue and Jan agree that every-thing about a BBQ cook-off is fun, afterthe hard work of organizing. “Whereelse can you cook barbecue and eat allday, maybe consume a few adult bever-ages, visit with friends and classmatesthat you haven’t seen in years, andmaybe win a little money doing it? Ifyou do win a little money, you have brag-

ger’s rights for a year. If you don’t win,no big deal, you had a great time doingit,” said Doug.

All judges for the cook-off are volun-teers. To be a judge come by the Cham-ber of Commerce building on MainStreet by Veterans’ Park preferably Sat-urday morning and sign up to judge.They’ll let you know what time you willbe needed for judging.

The cook-off organizers hope thateveryone will remember that Gordonwanted this cook-off to be fun and not beas serious as a sanctioned cook-off wouldbe. The cook-off continues today in hismemory carrying on that tradition.

Interspersedwith the arts and crafts vendors on MainStreet will be a few commercial vendorssuch as Rain Gutter Pro. Several foodvendors will be situated at the 2ndStreet intersection of Main Street, in-

cluding Bob and Deb’s Fried Pies. Hav-ing food vendors on 2nd Street allowspeople to purchase food at both ends ofthe festival, and there will be a varietyof food to satisfy any hunger need atboth locations.

When dealing with over 100 vendors,there are certain challenges, the primaryone being that of having enough electric-ity for the needs.

Jeff Moore of Moore Electric makessure there is plenty of electricitythroughout the festival. Another chal-lenge is vendor placement. Many of the

“old-timers” request a certain location,and most of the time, their requests canbe accommodated.

A third challenge is getting everybodysituated on the morning of the festival.Some food vendors bring trailers, andthat poses a challenge if the vendors oneither side of them are already there.With the help of an army of hogunteers,every vendor is in the right spot by thetime the festival begins.

Each year, the vendors are given a sur-vey at the end of the day to voice theirsuggestions and comments. Most of

them are quite favorable, and the onething that seems to draw the most posi-tive comments is the hospitality roomprovided for them. The ladies from St.Peter’s Lutheran Church diligently man-age the room. This year, Josh Carillo isorganizing the hospitality room andpromises a huge 25th birthday cake withballoons as well as the usual food fare.Many vendors at Hogeye return yearafter year and invite their friends tocome to Hogeye. The 25th Annual Hog-eye Festival, assures the best vendorsever.
