Preface Welcome to the Eleventh Asia-Pacific Conference on Combustion (ASPACC-11), proudly hosted by the Australia and New Zealand Section of the Combustion Institute (ANZ-CI). This conference is held in conjunction with the 2017 Australian Combustion Symposium and the Eighth Australian Conference on Laser Diagnostics in Fluid Mechanics and Combustion. The Bilger Lecture, which has become a feature of the Australian Combustion Symposia, will be presented by Professor William Roberts. The conference program brings together an outstanding team of invited speakers with six distinguished Plenary Lectures and two Invited Reviews who will address highly relevant topics spanning fundamental and applied areas of combustion.
Over four busy days and in nine parallel sessions, some 387 papers contributed from 21 countries will be presented covering thirteen different combustion colloquia. This rich technical program reflects the massive and continuing growth of combustion research in the Asia Pacific Region. To put this in perspective, the First ASPACC which took place in Osaka, Japan 1997 had 150 papers. The number of contributions have not only more than doubled since then but have also improved significantly in quality and depth.
Each contributed paper was subjected to a rigorous selection process which included peer-reviews, assessment by colloquium co-chairs and subsequent revision as required. The ASPACC organising committee is grateful to the hundreds of reviewers who have assisted in maintaining a high quality of accepted papers.
The growing contribution of young scientists and research students is refreshing, with more than half of the registrants being in this category. To encourage continued and stronger contributions from the young, this conference offers six ASPACC Young Investigator Awards, The Terry Wall Best Student Paper Award for the best paper on solid fuel combustion and two Best Student Paper Prizes.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Chairs of the various Asia Pacific Sections of the Combustion Institute for their continued support of this conference. I am also grateful to members of the ASPACC Organising Committee who have worked tirelessly over more than a year to bring this event together. They are: Drs Matthew Cleary, Matthew Dunn, and Agisilaos Kourmatzis from the University of Sydney; and Professor Evatt Hawkes, A/Prof Shawn Kook and Dr. Shaun Chan from the University of New South Wales.

More details: Talks will end early on Tuesday, 12th December so that delegates can see some of Australia’s native wildlife, which comes with some of the best views in Sydney, due to Taronga zoo’s location on the north shore of Sydney harbour.

Coaches will begin departing from the Abercrombie building at 12.50pm. One coach will also depart from the Mercure Hotel at 1pm.
Takeaway lunch packets will be provided to all delegates. These will be provided to delegates on their way to the coaches (announcement to be provided). A number of lunch boxes will also be pre-packed for those taking coaches from the Mercure.
Arrival at Taronga Zoo at 1.45pm to be greeted by staff. Return time will be 5pm (zoo closure time).

Taronga zoo, Ferries to Taronga Zoo leave from Circular Quay (visit: https://transportnsw.info/trip#/). NSW transport and timetables can also be accessed via the Tripview App.
The surrounding area around Taronga zoo is worth a visit for those wishing to stay on the north shore past 5pm. Sydney harbour national park is just around the corner from the zoo, along with Bradley’s head lighthouse & various walks with views of the harbour.
