IMPORTANT!!! --Background Checks -- Our New Reality

Jan 2012

As you probably realize, churches assume a major liability risk today if they do not conduct sexual

offense background checks on all paid and volunteer youth workers. It is a reality of our time and

in the interest of protecting our youth.

Likewise, we must provide watchful care over adults who will be in contact with all of our students

at EleVate Winter Youth Retreat. Enclosed is a background check affidavit we are now required to

use with churches sending adult workers to EleVate Winter Youth Retreat (any adult from the

church at EleVate is included). It is necessary for the form to include the full names of all adults

from the church at EleVate, verifying that background checks have been performed on all. Please

notice the form requires notarization. We would all be deeply grieved if one event occurred at

EleVate of an adult worker taking advantage of a student. Additionally, if a background check had

not been performed on that adult, the church and region would also be legally liable. We cannot

risk any of that; too much would be at stake. Nor can we selectively apply the background checks

and grant exceptions.All of us must come under the cover of that protection. If this is new to you,please know that churches across the nation are now performing these background checks. It is

standard operating procedure for wise leaders.

It is recommended you have all youth workers complete and sign a copy of the enclosed

application form that your church will keep on file. The application form is the starting point.

Thankfully, we are aware of a web site where you can conduct sexual offense background checks

free of charge from a Department of Justice data base. You can go to this site and enter the names

of individuals to verify there is no criminal background of sexual offense:

http://www.nsopw.gov/Core/Conditions.aspx. Anyone with any such offense in his or her

background cannot participate at EleVate. While grace can cover sin legal liability remains.

Thank you for understanding how important it is to put the health and safety of our students first.

All adults coming to EleVate must be listed on the signed and notarized affidavit(most banks have

notaries) as having been cleared by a background check, and submitted with your registrations.

We can do this it is correct and appropriate that we do and there is no cost. If you have any
