Hello, Alderman Hopkins et al,

In the context of a recent inquiry about safety concerns in the alley behind our church property,

we learned that funds may be available to provide additional lighting. The attached pages de-

scribe the need. I’ll be grateful to learn from you if our circumstances qualify and what related

additional steps we may need to take..

Also, two existing street lights have not been working since I became the priest at Church of the

Ascension in January 2016. Those are also described. Not sure if this is or is not a matter with

which you can help. If not, I hope you can direct me elsewhere. (Calls to ‘311’ have not worked.)

The Church of the Ascension property encompasses the entire half-block on

the east side of LaSalle between Maple and Elm.

There’s a notch in the alley and resulting

blind spot, resulting in a pocket of trouble.

We witness several incidents a week that

include urinating, defecating, intercourse,

sleeping, smoking crack and exchange of

money for various items.

Invisible dark spot at night. There is

a fixture on the residential wall over

the spot, but it is inadequate. There

is a utility pole at the location,

shown by the arrow, on which a new

light can/should be placed.

The location is also immediately outside a residential garage. It’s not possi-

ble from inside the garage when opening the door to know what activity

may be going on. We are concerned about what may result if, for instance,

we witness criminal behavior as the garage door opens.
