Photography Elements & Principles of Design Your Task: Is to take pictures that follow the Elements & Principles of design. Choose 4 ELEMENTS TO HIGHLIGHT. Think about changing your perspective, taking 1 vertical shot for every horizontal one, and most importantly frame your subject matter in an interesting and unique way. Line: Lines can be straight, curvy, bumpy, jagged, or wavy. A line is a mark that has a beginning and an end. We can show moods and feelings, such as anger, laziness, confusion, or happiness, by drawing different kinds of lines. Shape: When both ends of a line meet to surround space, the line forms a shape. When both ends of a line meet to surround space, the line forms a shape. Value: We use the term "value" to refer to how much light and dark is in a design. Form: A form is a shape that has three dimensions: height, width, and depth. A flat shape has only two dimensions: height and width. Form represents the difference between drawing a square on paper and drawing a cube. Size & Scale: Size in a composition is decided by comparing one object to other objects.

Your Task: Is to take pictures that follow the Elements & Principles of design. Choose 4 ELEMENTS TO HIGHLIGHT. Think about changing your perspective, taking 1 vertical shot for every horizontal one, and most importantly frame your subject matter in an interesting and unique way. Line: Lines can be straight, curvy,

bumpy, jagged, or wavy. A line is a mark that has a beginning and an end. We can show moods and feelings, such as anger, laziness, confusion, or happiness, by drawing different kinds of lines.

Shape: When both ends of a line meet to

surround space, the line forms a shape. When both ends of a line meet to surround space, the line forms a shape.

Value: We use the term "value" to refer to

how much light and dark is in a design.

Form: A form is a shape that has three

dimensions: height, width, and depth. A flat shape has only two dimensions: height and width. Form represents the difference between drawing a square on paper and drawing a cube.

Size & Scale: Size in a composition is decided by

comparing one object to other objects.

Asymmetry: A design that is not the same on both sides is said to be "asymmetrical," and a design that is asymmetrical is said to have "Informal" balance. Most pictures are asymmetrical and have informal balance.

Symmetry: Designs that have two identical

halves. Also known as "formal" balance. For example, a butterfly has symmetry, or is symmetrical, because one wing perfectly matches the other.

Contrast: Contrast refers to having different

things in the same design. This can be done with size, texture or colour

Repetition with Variation:

An element is repeated, but with some differences. Not exactly the same, but close.

Texture

Texture refers to how the surface of something looks and feels. For example, the surface of a brick is hard and rough. A snake's skin is scaly and dry.

Framing: Compose your subject with a frame

around it. A photographic frame is something that acts as a border or frame for your subject. Frames also create perspective and show depth.

Rule of Thirds:

Imaginary lines are drawn dividing the image into thirds both horizontally and vertically. You place important elements of your composition where these lines intersect

Each Image will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

v Images (10 marks each) Style/Composition—Your photograph effectively demonstrates your selected Element or Principle of design. The information is organized interestingly in your focal plane. Technical—The usual technical considerations apply: focus, contrast, depth of field, exposure, composition. (1 mark each) Creative—You have used point of view and composition in a unique and interesting way.
