3rd Person Limited

• Narrator does not participate in action of story.

• Narrator does not refer to himself or herself.

• Narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of one character, but readers are able to maintain some emotional distance from the character.

3rd Person Omniscient

• Narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of all characters; readers get insight into several characters.

Theme

• In literature, theme is a perception about life or human nature that the writer wants to share with the reader.

Mood v Tone

• Watch out! Tone and mood are similar!! • Mood is the general atmosphere created by the author’s

words. It is the feeling the reader gets from reading those words. It may be the same, or it may change from situation to situation. Mood is the overall feeling a reader gets from a story.

• Tone is the author’s attitude toward the writing (his characters, the situation) and the readers. A work of writing can have more than one tone. An example of tone could be both serious and humorous. Tone is set by the setting, choice of vocabulary and other details.
