Assessment• Interim Assessments (IA) for Grade 5 (All
benchmarks assessed for Baseline, Fall and Winter assessments)
• Quarterly Science Benchmark Assessments (QSBA) for Grades K- 4 will assess benchmarks covered in each quarter.(Pretest/Post-test, Quarters 1, 2, 3, 4)
• Weekly Briefing # 12329 specify dates for administering QSBA
• First Quarter Assessments K-4: Available: October 22 Administer: Oct 29-Nov 9, 2012 11

What Should a Science Classroom Look Like?
12
![Page 13: Elementary Science Leaders Dialogue # 1 September 24-28, 2012](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081604/56815e1a550346895dcc7784/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Good Science Instruction
• Plan with the goal in mind using the 5 E’s Instructional Model the Pacing Guide and Data Driven Instruction
• Develop High Order Questioning Strategies to increase higher order critical thinking
• Implement a routine of inquiry based, hands-on activities that promote the practice and understanding of science relating what is happening in the classroom to the real world
• Use successful teaching strategies
13
![Page 14: Elementary Science Leaders Dialogue # 1 September 24-28, 2012](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081604/56815e1a550346895dcc7784/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Successful Strategies to Use • The 5 E’s• HOT Questions (Web’s
Depth of Knowledge)• Inquiry• Hands-On Activities/Labs• Demonstrations• Virtual Labs• Notebooks (IAN/JOSE)• Graphic Organizers
• Models & Visuals• Cooperative Learning• Think-Pair-Share• Jigsaw• Centers / Stations• Internet / Video • Differentiated Instructional strategies

![Page 19: Elementary Science Leaders Dialogue # 1 September 24-28, 2012](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081604/56815e1a550346895dcc7784/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
What is Inquiry?
• A step beyond the process skills in which content, process, and reasoning are synthesized as a way for students to learn. (National Science Educational Standards).
• An active learning process in which students answer research questions through data analysis.
• Importance of Inquiry Inquiry incorporates the scientific practices of hypothesizing, investigating, observing, explaining and evaluating.
19
![Page 20: Elementary Science Leaders Dialogue # 1 September 24-28, 2012](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081604/56815e1a550346895dcc7784/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Types of Inquiry
• A scaffolded inquiry (TM Scott Foresman) or continuum inquiry that consists of three levels of inquiry.
1. Directed (Structured) Inquiry 2. Guided Inquiry 3. Full (Open) Inquiry
![Page 21: Elementary Science Leaders Dialogue # 1 September 24-28, 2012](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081604/56815e1a550346895dcc7784/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Directed/Structured Inquiry
Teacher & Students• Teacher directs the activity.• Teacher guides students to
build their conceptual understanding of scientific knowledge.
• Students explore science concepts through hands-on inquiry based experiences.
• Students learn process skills and follow step-by-step instructions.

Guided InquiryTeacher & Students• Teacher poses the
question and guides the activity.
• Students take more ownership of the inquiry process by formulating
and testing hypotheses to solve the problem, last evaluating and communicating their
explanations.

Full/Open InquiryTeacher & Students
• Teacher facilitates full inquiry
• Students take the lead in conducting an inquiry - based investigation using the scientific method.
• Students establish and refine the methods, materials, and data they will collect.
• Students develop inquiring attitudes that prepare them for Science Fair projects and middle school curriculum.
