Introduction: KM6-EC Subracks
KM6- EC subracks
IntroductIonKM6-EC subracks have been designed and are suitable for high volume, cost sensitive applications. Whilst they are still versatile and fully conform to the requirements of IEC60297, care has been taken to remove certain features found in the KM6-II range to reduce the manufacturing cost. These include lighter extrusion profiles, single-point tiebar fixings (rather than double) and Zintec side plates (rather than aluminium).
Features Lightweight and versatile economy range, supplied in kit form for simple yet accurate assembly EMC conversion options Conductive finish Backplane mounting or DIN 41612 connectors. Compatible with certain accessories from the KM6-II range EC universally pierced end plates
Backplane extrusIonsType 1 is a normal version which requires a backplane spacer strip, either insulating or conductive, to maintain the geometry of the subrack.Type 2 is extended to obviate the need for a spacer, this version is acceptable provided there is no need to insulate the backplane from the extrusion. contents oF kItDescription Material/Finish

KM6-EC Subracks
km6-ec dIVIder kItsUse to partially divide 6U into 2 x 3U sections. Please note thatdivider plate occupies 2HP of front panel space. These kits can beused as right or left hand dividers.
Full width (2 x 3U)There are two types of 84HP divider kits:
Type A contains normal front extrusions, with the ‘eyebrow’
Type B uses a ‘lipless’ extrusion, which will permit the fitting of6U flat front panels. (EMC panels would require modification tothe channel section).

CompactPCI, PXI and VME64X COMPaTIBLE
KM6-RF SUBRaCKThis subrack, an evolution of our successful KM6 range, has been designed to EMC shield electronics systems which operate especially in the higher end of the frequency spectrum.Building on our experience with KM6-II, the first commercially available standard subrack system with a truly retrofit EMC capability, KM6-RF incorporates a number of features which provide additional configuration possibilities whilst addressing the latest mechanical standards.
IEC60297-3 and IEEE1101.10 /11COMPaTIBLEIEEE 1101.10/11 introduces some refinements to the existing IEC 60297 standards as they apply to subracks and EMC front panels:
The geometry of EMC panels and related seals is constrained to ensure interchangeability between manufacturers’ offerings.
A front panel injector/extractor is introduced to help overcome the increased insertion/withdrawal forces encountered in the use of Metric and five row DIN connectors which are gaining ground especially in advanced bus systems such as VME64x and CompactPCI®. Along with this handle goes an operating ‘lip’ on the front extrusions and a system for coding and ESD grounding.

KM6-RF SUBRaCKSKM6-RF is compatible with IEC 297-3 and DIN 41494, so it will accept the existing range of guides, front panel and plug-in units. It has, however, a new design of extruded EMC front panel and contact fingers designed to the latest industry standards (IEEE 1101.10) to minimise intrusion into the PCB area.
Our KM6-RF range complies to the latest PICMG specifications and is, therefore, ideally suited to CompactPCI, PXI and VME64x system builds.
aCCESSORIESA wide range of accessories add to the versatility of the KM6-RF system. In addition to the subracks, piece parts, guides etc., there is a comprehensive range of compatible panels and plug-in units to address the requirements of both EMC and non-EMC applications.
EXTRUSIOn OPTIOnSFurther variations within these three basic styles concern the choices of front and backplane extrusion.
EMC PERFORManCE gRaPhThe graph shows results obtained from testing an empty style B 6U x 84HP x 300 with overall ventilated top and bottom covers, full rear closing panel and front panels
The test was carried out in our own test facility. Details of the method of testing and interpretation can be found in our leaflet ‘The Science of Compliance’ a copy of which is available on request.
CUSTOMISIng SERVICEVerotec has many years of experience in the design and production of customised subracks. Most of our subrack systems are easily modified in order to suit a wide range of applications, and our customising experience is probably unsurpassed in the industry.

KM6-RF Subrack: Introduction to rear plug-up – Style C
COMPaTIBLE wITh IEEE1101.10 and .11 FOR CompactPCI, PXI and VME64X SySTEMSThe IEEE1101.11 standard is a further extension of the core specification – IEEE1101.1 – which embraces both IEC60297-3 and IEEE1101.10.
IEEE1101.11 standardises and sets out the geometry for the rear plug-up (transition) area of a subrack where previously no standard existed.
Rear plug-up - or transition - is used and required within the core specifications of major open-architecture bus structures where a midplane is used to provide a rear I/O interface. This transition formalises the mechanical interface between front and rear plug-up cards or modules based on the Eurocard format.
Verotec’s KM6-RF range of subracks, featured on the following pages, integrates both the IEEE1101.10 and .11 specifications and adopts the inline card principle to provide the high level of EMC attenuation required in modern electronic systems.
The basic KM6-RF frame combinations, together with an extensive range of accessories, have been developed to cover most popular subrack sizes and rear I/O requirements and enable the end-user to tailor the finished subrack to suit the specific needs of the application.
Should further assistance, or advice on a non-standard, unlisted configuration, be required please contact our sales office or our applications specialists.

Type 1 or Type 2 midplane exTrusions
You will need to select kits as follows
Step 1 A suitable basic kit (A or B) is selected by the final assembly configuration (height, plug-up geometry) and whether the midplane is to be mounted with insulation spacers (Type 1) or direct to the extrusion (Type 2). This basic kit contains all parts necessary to construct a basic framework except end plates and rear EMC top and bottom covers. Step 2 The end plates (C) are selected according to height and the front/rear plug-up combinationStep 3 EMC rear section covers (D) are selected by front/rear plug-up combination. Guides are selected as required. Step 4 The front guides (E) must be 160mm type. Step 5 The rear guides (F) are dependant on the rear plug-up configuration.

KM6-RF Subracks: Piece Parts and Accessories
inTroducTion KM6-RF sets out to address the IEEE1101.10 and 11 specifications whilst providing a high level of EMC shielding performance. A wide variety of complete kits are available, but it is also possible to order in individual piece parts for situations where those kits do not meet your specific requirements. This section shows details at piece part level, including some dimensional information. In general, components are parametic in that it is possible to calculate dimensions of other sizes from a basic standard set of dimensions. For instance, a nominally 84HP extrusion has a standard length of 432,2mm. It can be calculated that a 60HP version is 432,2 - (24 x 5,08mm) = 432,2 - 121,92 = 310,28mm. With two exceptions which are identified, end conditions are symmetrical at 84HP and should always be referenced to the left hand end viewed from the front.
In height (end plates, for instance), a similar calculation will use multiples of 44,45mm - a ‘U’, although there are some variations in that rack mounting hole positions do not have a regular increment.

KM6-RF end plates are largely modular in dimensions: from a basic height and depth, height dimensions increase by 44,45mm for each additional unit of 1U. In depth the increments are based on the Eurocard step of 60mm, or 20mm in the case of rear plug-up versions.
4U and 7U versions can be used in either (3 or 6U) plus 1U top or bottom, or (3 or 6U) plus ½ U top and bottom, allowing space for cooling, recessing, cabling etc.

IEEE 1101.10 versionThe extended front lip provides facilities for the operation of IEEE 1101.10 compliant injector/ extractors fitted to front panels.
IEC 60297-3 (non inject/ extract) versionSimilar to the above, but without the extended lip. Normally used for panels which do not carry an injector/ extractor to 1101.10
Lipless versionThis extrusion has a reduced overall height, and so can fit inside an EMC cover to enable recessing of pcb’s. It can also be used in a divided height situation where it is necessary to fit a 6U panel over two, 3U sections - it should be noted, however that it would be necessary to modify a front panel slightly if it is IEEE 1101.10 compliant.

ReaR extRusionsType 1 The Type 1 extrusion requires a spacer in order to maintain the correct geometry of the reference face of a backplane. This would normally be an insulator, but a conductive version is available if required.
Type 2The Type 2 extrusion is extended at the rear so that it does not require any spacer and when it is not necessary or desirable to insulate the backplane from the frame.

Prevents sideways movement of panels on insertion
This 84HP pierced strip fits into the forward slot in KM6-RF front extrusions. When used in conjunction with a compatible IEEE 1101.10 front panel injector/ejector handle, it prevents sideways movement caused by the pressure of EMC fingers. The hole size permits a normal M2,5 front panel screw to pass through into the tapped strip.

PcB gRounding cliPs (esd)
FeatuRes Electrostatic Protection According to IEEE1101.10 No screws required
This grounding clip can be inserted into the front or rear of 1,6mm pcb guides. Contacts on the clip provide electrical continuity between a suitably equipped Eurocard and, via a spring under the clip to the standard front extrusions. Pcb’s can, therefore, be grounded before the engagement of connectors. The clip fits into a ‘pocket’ in the guide and requires no screw fixings to maintain contact. The clip has been tested to IEC 950: 1986 section 2.5.11. In testing, the clip reached a steady temperature of 76 degrees C at 15A, with a resistance path of 7 mOhms. A typical electrostatic discharge would be 12A for a period of 1 microsecond.
It should be noted that the clip is designed to provide a ground path for electrostatic charges, not for a power short circuit or as a ground rail.

Introduction: KM6-HD subracks
KM6-HD Subrack (IEC version)
KM6-HD HEAVY DUTY CARD FRAME
InTRoDUCTIonThe KM6-HD subrack system, although primarily designed for military use, would suit any rugged application where a high resistance to shock and vibration is required. Built to meet MIL-STD-167, its features include positive guide locking / retention, heavy two-screw fixing tiebar extrusions, 3mm thick side plates / rack angles and a conductive finish throughout.
The KM6-HD subrack accepts standard Eurocards in 3U, 6U and 9U heights and depths of up to 400mm in both IEC60297 and IEEE1101.10/11 standards. This makes the card frames suitable for housing popular backplane types such as VMEbus, VXI, VME64 Extensions, VPX, VXS, CompactPCI and also DIN connectors with the use of a connector mounting extrusion.
KM6-HD subracks are supplied in kit form as standard but can be shipped fully assembled upon request. They are compatible with the comprehensive range of KM6-II accessories including; front panels, plug-in units, divider kits and peripheral mounting assemblies.

FRAMEs WITH InTEgRAL CooLIng
Each of the KM6-HD card frames previously detailed is available with integral cooling fans. The addition of fans increases the overall height of the unit by 1U (44.45mm). Frames with 160mm and 220mm guides have a fan tray with 3 fans while units with 400mm guides and rear transition areas are fitted with trays incorporating 6 fans.
Each fan tray assembly has a front panel which includes a mains-on indicator. Fans are positioned centrally depending on the depth of the card guide to ensure maximum cooling of the boards in the frame.
Fan trays are available in both 110V.a.c. and 220V.a.c. versions with a standard IEC inlet at the rear for power connection.

KM6 Front Panels and Plug-In-Units
Verotec offers an extensive range of front panels and plug-in units that meet the requirements of IEC 60297-3 / DIN 41494 and IEEE 1101.10. A large number of accessories and a full customising service ensure the needs of both board manufacturers and subrack users alike are met.
Unshielded Front PanelsAll front panels in this category are manufactured from 2.5mm aluminium and come in two versions. Version 1 is manufactured from pre-anodised material, has a horizontal grain and is supplied with plastic bushes as standard. Version 2 has an anodised front face and chromated, conductive rear face for applications where electrical continuity is required to the front extrusions. They have a vertical grain and are supplied with metal bushes.
Front panels that are 2HP-9HP wide are supplied with 1 x fixing screw / bush top and bottom where as front panels in 10HP-84HP widths are supplied with 2 x fixing screws / bushes top and bottom.
All front panels are supplied in kits. ”Blank” panels simply come with fixing hardware where as “Standard” panels include plastic handles and aluminium handle idents. Front panel sizes are 3U/6U heights and 2HP-84HP widths with “Hinged” and “Ejector” versions also being available.
PlUg-in UnitsThere are two main types of plug-in unit, “Standard” and “Enhanced”. Standard types are constructed with module guide rails and incorporate the standard (version 1) front panels described above, with 3HP-9HP units having 2 x rails and 10HP-42HP units having 4 x rails. Enhanced types use an extruded side cover which incorporates a guide rail top and bottom. They are more robust and provide a higher level of shielding than standard types. They use the standard (version 2) front panels described above with a chromated inner face. 3HP-9HP units have a single left-hand extruded cover (2-Rail) with the right cover being formed metal whilst on 10HP-42HP units, both side covers are extruded (4-Rail). EVXI Front panels and modules
VXI module
VXi ModUle
Features
Normal and light duty Single and double width C and D size Easy access
In support of the VXIbus, Verotec offer screened modules in two standard forms.
norMal dUtyThis module has a relatively high screening capability, and is available in single and double widths, ‘C’ and ‘D’ sizes.
The double width version moves the circuit board to the right by one slot. This facility is likely to be needed where the skyline on the wiring side is greater than normal - when using wire wrapping assembly, or where additional components are required to be fitted on that side.
The module consists of a channel section front panel, incorporating ejector handles and card mounting brackets, ventilated left and right covers and EMC sealing. Connector screening is incorporated in the side covers. The Eurocard sized PCB provides the guide rail facility for the module as required in the specification. The construction of the side covers is such that access to the PCB can be simply gained by the removal of four screws.
In order to maintain electrical continuity between the metal side covers it is necessary to incorporate a row of plated through holes along the upper and lower edges of the PCB under the area covered by the RFI sealing strip. The spacing of these holes will obviously affect the degree of screening obtained from the module. In addition, four holes are needed to permit the passage of the fixing screws through the board (drilling details as shown). Continuity between the covers and the front panel is maintained by the incorporation of beryllium copper fingers. More fingers are used to maintain contact between the module and the backplane motherboard ground plane, and between neighbouring modules.
All metal components are conductively finished and the front panel has metal inserts to ensure good electrical contact between the module and the subrack.
The PCB is fitted to the front panel via metal brackets as standard, although plastic brackets are available if they are required.
LIGHT DUTY Also in single ‘C’ size, the light duty module can be provided, without any EMC seals, offering a lower cost solution where EMC screening is con sid ered less of a problem. This unit has our two-part front panel and can be up grad ed by the addition of seals as needed. Connector Area 4 holes ø3,5 Two rows plated through holes.
connector shroUdA connector shroud is available, in beryllium copper, that will enhance the screening performance when it is fitted to the fixed connector on the backplane.

Typical shielding performance - normal duty modulesThese performance figures were obtained by testing a representative sample from production batches. The tests carried out were in accordance with MIL-STD-285, modified where necessary due to the nature of the module. The figures are given as a guideline. Any additions or modifications will have an effect upon the shielding performance and it is, therefore, essential that these units are retested once the final unit is complete.
Performance figures were obtained reading from the right hand (component) side of the module. The figures stated were obtained from our in-house test facility.
VXi coMPatiBle Front Panel kitsThese panels are available separately from the module for situations where EMC screening of the individual pcb is not required, but it is necessary to maintain the overall subrack's RFI screen. Available in the same variants as the VXI modules, the kits include ejector handles, mounting hardware, fixings and EMC fixings.

Universal KM6-II subracks are strong, versatile and easy to assemble. The tie bars are of large section for rigidity and are secured using two fixing screws into counterbored holes. The screws thus act as location dowels promoting a high degree of accuracy during construction.
Features
Strong and versatile Two screw fixing of tie bars Conforms to IEC 60297-3 Total versatility permits wide range of configurations Available in kit or piece-part form Accurate location for first time assembly Rugged construction Pre-tapped holes and machine screws throughout EMC conversion (see pages 23 – 27) No location mouldings required With or without front handles Provision for fitting 19” angles front or rear
This version, as the name implies, has the capability of housing Eurocards of different sizes in a variety of configurations. The frame can be constructed from standard parts in 3U, 4U, 6U, 7U and 9U heights.
The 240mm, 300mm, 360mm or 420mm deep endplates, incorporate a series of punched holes so that the tie bars can be assembled at any required position on a 12mm pitch. 300mm and greater depths also have a pattern of additional holes for fixing the chassis system. 84 HP variants are offered in Backplane or DIN 41612 connector mounting and are supplied with or without front handles. DIN 41612 rear tie bars are fully tapped.
Note: 4U and 7U versions can only be ordered from piece parts. Alternative versions

KM6-II Universal and KM6-EC Subracks: EMC Conversion
KM6-II EMC CONVERSION KITSKM6-II Universal subracks and some sizes of KM6-EC can be retrospectively EMC screened by the addition of covers and suitable front and rear panels.
Two Basic types of screening cover are available:OVERALL, (Fig. 1) which provide a screen over both the card area and the rear connector/backplane area. In this version, the rear of the subrack is completed by the addition of conventionally fixed panels, either full width or in combinations of lesser width front panels.PCB AREA ONLY (Fig. 2) This application requires a motherboard/backplane which is specifically designed to provide rear screening using ground plane technology. With this geometry, only the front aperture requires screening panels.
Covers are generally available in ventilated and unventilated forms. They are designed to maintain intimate contact with the end plates by means of screws and internal flanges. At the interface with the extrusions, the covers have patented dimples in such a way as to provide an interference fit with a slot in the extrusion. The concept of this slot ensures that the card guide location holes are within the screened area of the subrack and also provides additional screening by introducing a labyrinth around the edge of the cover.
‘A guide to the EMC screening of subracks’ on page 12 discusses the effects of various configurations on the overall performance, with particular attention to the use of RFI fingers.
ORDERINg AN EMC SCREENED SUBRACK Select a Universal subrack kit to suit your card size using table below. Note that, for instance, it is not possible to EMC screen a 220mm long card in a 240 deep subrack.
Select an EMC conversion kit to suit your subrack and card size (see page 24 for Overall Depth Covers and page 25 for PCB Depth Covers). Note – for screening 42HP subracks please refer to note 2 on page 34
Select front and rear panels as appropriate (see page 27).
Identify total quantity of RFI finger strips required according to the desired performance level of the final assembly. (See page 12 for guide and page 24 for EMC finger strips).

KM6-II FronT TIE BarsKM6-II front tie bars feature a screw fixing system using a unique dowel-screw arrangement which ensures accurate location and subrack rigidity. An additional slot is provided which, when fitted with a tapped strip, enables pcb and module guides to be secured using M2,5 x 5mm screws, thereby offering greater security and strength (see figure 8).
Provision is also made for the fitting of dust/EMC covers, without the need for additional seals, whilst still maintaining a high level of EMC screening.
Normal front extrusions have slot identification printed along their length to aid guide location. Top versions also have a printed ident on the front face for panel location.
In addition to the normal front extrusion, there are other types:
PLAIN which has no guide location holes; this extrusion is included in EMC conversion kits and can also be used for just attaching additional panels (e.g. for rear socket mounting).
LIPLESS which has normal guide location holes but offers two facilities; if used as a height dividing extrusion, it is possible to use overall front panels (see figure 6); it will also fit within an EMC screen, permitting the recessing of cards (see figure 7).
These extrusions are supplied in lengths of 84HP and can easily be cut to length to suit other width requirements. These tie bars are not silk screen printed.

Detail of grounding strip requirements on a standard Eurocard - wiring and/or component side
PCB GrOundInG ClIPThis grounding clip can be inserted into the front or rear of 1,6mm pcb guides in KM6 subracks.
Features
Electrostatic Protection Occupies ‘unused’ area of Eurocard No screws required
Contacts on the clip provide electrical continuity between a suitably equipped Eurocard and, via a spring under the clip to standard front extrusions. Pcb’s can, therefore, be grounded before the engagement of connectors. The clip, which is supplied in packs of 10, fits into a ‘pocket’ in the guide and requires no screw fixings to maintain contact.
The modification required to the pcb takes the form of a conductive strip along the edge of the board, either on the left or right side (see illustration). The clip has been tested to IEC 950: 1986 section 2.5.11. In testing, the clip reached a steady temperature of 76 degrees C at 15A, with a resistance path of 7mΩ. A typical electrostatic discharge would be 12A for a period of 1 microsecond.
It should be noted that the clip is designed to provide a ground path for electrostatic charges, not for a power short circuit or as a ground rail.

KM6-II Subracks: Accessories
rear dIvIder KItsRear dividers shorten the depth of the subrack by 60mm locally at the rear, and are employed when it is necessary to use mixed depth PCBs or modules within a 3U or 6U subrack. Example: where 160mm PCBs are required in a frame where the rear extrusions are set for 220mm deep PCBs.Rear dividers can be supplied as listed below (as a 6U kit), or can be configured by using 3U and 6U dividers together with rear tie bars and tapped strips which are available separately.

Top/base covers
Rear cover kit
tOP and Base COver KItsThis range of top and base covers are suitable for fitting to both Standard and Universal KM6-II subracks .
Two depths are available for protecting the guide area of 160mm or 220mm boards. The covers are available in ventilated or unventilated versions and can be fitted after the subrack has been assembled. A slot in the rear tie bar captures the cover and plastic clips secure it to the front. The cover can thus be easily removed for access.

Horizontal Mounting ModulesThis unit, which fits into a subrack like a 3U module, is actually a 6U x 20HP subrack on its side. This module permits the use of normal guides, front panels, plug-in units etc. and solves the problem of housing double Eurocards, i.e. 6U cards, in a 3U subrack, a situation which is frequently associated with modern bus systems.
The horizontal mounting module offers a number of additional advantages. It can be sub-assembled separately from the main subrack, and it offers “chimney” cooling between the end plates.

Notes
A. The unit can be supported over its depth by fitting one or two plug-in guides to
the main subrack directly under the horizontal module.
B. In order to maintain correct connector geometry it is necessary to fit a spacer,
either conductive or insulating, between the rear backplane mounting extrusions and
the motherboard/backplane.

The chassis system offers a method of mounting simple plates into subracks. They can be used for carrying additional components such as power supplies, or for securing wiring etc.
The components of this system are designed for maximum versatility.
The extrusion has an M4 section which will accept hex nuts or screws directly and a section which will accept a KM6-II tapped strip or M2,5 hex nuts and screws. The extrusion is tapped M4 for fixing and our standard subrack kits have additional holes to provide convenient mounting centres.
