Leon Engineering SA warrants that the equipment covered by this warranty will be free from defects in workmanship and materials for a period of 1 (one) year from date of installation or eighteen (18) months from date of shipment to the buyer, whichever comes first. Should any such defects be found and reported, Leon Engineering (herein referred to as the "Company"), will, at its option, refund the purchase price or furnish replacements parts. The following are NOT covered under any of these warranties: 1) Initial installation and ongoing scale calibration. 2) Damage to scale components by gross abuse, fire, flooding, explosion, water, voltage surges, or civil disturbance, or other external events. 3) Normal maintenance or consumable items. 5 MODIFICATIONS Initial version.

6 INTRODUCTION The electronic weight indicator LD 5208 is a compact micro-controller based unit specifically designed for use on systems utilizing strain gauge load cells. The standard configuration includes: 1. High accuracy analog to digital converter (max 550.000 internal counts). 2. Front panel with 7 membrane keys with tactile feedback. 3. 6 digits, 7 segments, LCD display black (24 mm) plus annunciators. 4. Non volatile memory for system parameters and calibration data. 5. Serial port RS232C (COM1) for printing weighing data on a serial printer or host computer. 6. The microcontroller technology allows the instrument to perform in software all measuring

functions, operator input-output, automatic controls and sequences necessary for the operation of weighing systems.

7. The setting of the unit is done through a guided keyboard operation, enabling the adaptation to operating environment and system requirements.

8. A totaliser and counter is available that may be viewed or printed. 9. Several print formats are available selectable in setup. 10. A piece count facility, with selectable sample size, is available in the standard software. 11. Animal weighing with selectable number of samples is also included in the software.

WEIGHT DIGITS 4,5 WEIGHT STEPS 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50,100,200 DIGITAL FILTER FIR automatically adjusted to conversion speed, plus post

filtering (Rolling average 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 samples). DIGITAL CALIBRATION Dead load, Span and scale Parameters via keyboard commands.

Calibration may be performed by application of weights or by the mV/V values of the load cell data sheets.

7.3 Serial outputs SERIAL PORT 1: RS232C Full duplex.

2400 – 38400 baud , 7 or 8 data bits , even or no parity. Printer, weight output.

8 UNPACKING Prior to unpacking the equipment, examine the carton for exterior shipping damage and if any notify the carrier immediately. Remove the equipment from the carton and plastic bag. Inspect extent of supply for any sign of damage. Save packaging material. Verify that your indicator has been shipped with the following items :

• Indicator LD5208 . 230VAC to 9VDC/800mA, mains power adapter. User manual. An accessory kit including the connection plugs for the load cell and the serial port.

9 HOW TO CONFIGURE AND WORK WITH YOUR INDICATOR

In order to set the indicator in use, the sequence of steps is described below : Install the indicator at the selected position (Paragraph 10.2) and perform the necessary

connections: load cell connection – Paragraph 10.6 serial port connections – Paragraph 10.7

Power on the instrument – Chapter 11

Enter the dialogue PAR and program the scale parameters – Paragraph 15.1

Enter the dialogue CAL and calibrate the scale – Paragraph 15.2

Enter the dialogue STORE and save calibration data – Paragraph 15.2.2

Enter the dialogue SETUP and configure

operational parameters– Paragraph 16.2 serial port parameters– Paragraphs 16.3 up to 16.6

Select the desired weigh ticket format or create your own weigh ticket and download to the

indicator – Paragraph 16.7 Secure the calibration by inserting the CAL LOCK jumper – Chapter 17

10 INSTALLATION

10.1 Mounting location – Environmental considerations The mounting location must be such that the instrument is not subject to excessive vibrations, heat or humidity. Avoid direct sunlight on the front of the instrument. The unit has to be installed at the right height to allow an easy reading of the display and convenient keyboard operation. AMBIENT : Storage - 10 to +70 0C. TEMPERATURE Operating -10 to +40 0C. HUMIDITY : 40 to 90% RH (non condensing). VIBRATION : Severe vibration can affect the accuracy of weighing and damage electric / electronic components. AIR : The surrounding air should be dust free and not contain any corrosive

gasses or materials which could adversely affect the equipment. PROTECTION : IP40. ELECTROMAGNETIC : Heavy electrical equipment should not be installed close to FIELDS the weighing equipment. INCOMING AND : Relays and contactors connected to the equipment must have OUTGOING SIGNALS reliable and effective interference suppression. This also applies to

other equipment located within a distance of 3m from our equipment. Cabling must be performed according to normal practice.

NOTES : - WELDING on or in the vicinity of the equipment is strictly prohibited. - STATIC loads, caused by thunderstorms, have to be prevented from

developing by use of reliable lightning conductors. - ENSURE that the cooling of the equipment is not obstructed.

10.2 Mounting the indicator All connections to the instrument are made through the rear panel connectors. Strain reliefs are supplied with the connectors. The shield should be connected to the metal frame of the connector. 10.2.1 Table- or Wall-mount version – Stainless steel enclosure

10.3 Wiring Load cells : Use load cell cable 6 x 0,34 mm2 shielded for the sensor. Serial communications : Use 3 x 0,34 mm2 shielded for RS232C connection and 2x0,34 mm2

twisted pair and shielded for RS485 connection.

10.4 Power The instrument is powered from external power adaptor (9VDC/800mA) or internal battery. Battery charging is performed while the external power supply is connected. As the instrument is computer controlled it requires clean power for reliable operation. Power supplied should come from a source that is isolated from other process equipment.

WARNING Verify that the AC POWER SOCKET outlet is properly protected. To avoid shock hazards, always be certain that the power cord is disconnected from the wall

outlet BEFORE opening the enclosure. Even though the instrument may have been SWITCHED OFF, high voltage is present inside

the enclosure as long as power cord is connected to a power source. DO NOT USE any other type of power adaptor than the one supplied with the indicator. DO NOT create a safety hazard by defeating the grounding feature.

10.5 Load cell connections 10.5.1 Specifications CABLE TYPE : Use load cell cable 6 x 0,34 mm2 shielded. MAX. CABLE : 300m/ mm2 (cross sectional area of cable). UTILISATION : A -0.25 to 1.75 mV/V range is permitted (dead load inclusive) with GAIN=10mV or a -0.25 to 3.5 mV/V is permitted with GAIN=20mV. The load cells must be chosen so that the input signal to the controller is at least 0,4µV per scale increment. For load cell output less than 0,4µV/digit the controller will still be stable but the full temperature range accuracy is not guaranteed. LOAD CELL : 5VDC, fixed or alternating polarity (Setup selectable) for any EXCITATION numbers of load cells provided min. input impedance is 35 Ohm.

WARNING Do not run signal cables together with power cables. Connect the shielding where indicated on the drawing only Never use a megger to check wiring. Never use plastic insulating tape on load cell connections.

11 TURNING THE INDICATOR ON 1. After all connections have been made, plug in the power cord. 2. Empty the scale 3. Press the ON/OFF key on the front panel to turn the indicator ON. 4. When the LD5208 is powered up a self test routine is initiated during which the following

The software identification code is displayed briefly e.g. LD5208

Program Date The date of issue of the software version is displayed briefly e.g. 290705 (day - month - year)

Display segment test. All display segments are turned on then off for 2 sec (8.8.8.8.8.8)

5. The display shows the weight on the platform, then ZERO. If this weight is within the zero

range (+ 2% or 10% of the scale capacity), it will be zeroed automatically.

If the scale can not be zeroed Err 15 is displayed. Unload the scale and press ) key momentarily to acknowledge the error.

6. Power up the printer if one is connected to the LD5208. 7. The unit is ready for operation.

✎ If any other error message is displayed refer to List of Error codes, chapter 19. The instrument is being operated via the front panel keyboard . Access to the configuration and calibration parameters is accomplished via the Dialogues. Access to the operational tools and use of the indicator’s programs is accomplished via the Function Menu.

12.1 Weight display The indicator LD5208 has a 6-digit display for the indication of: measured weight (gross or net) error messages other messages indicating the status of the scale user guidance for the settings of the scale and the selection of operations technician guidance for the configuration and calibration procedures and checking purposes

12.2 Status annunciators At the left and right side of the digits small messages, called STATUS ANNUNCIATORS, appear in order to provide status information during the weighing process. O It is illuminated when the scale is stable.

ZERO It is illuminated when the scale weight is stable and within 1/4 division of actual zero. TARE It indicates that a tare value is being displayed. NET It is illuminated when the scale has been tared and the display is in NET mode. pcs It is illuminated when pieces are displayed.

b It lights up steady when the battery charge is being displayed. It flashes when the battery charge is below 20% of the scale capacity.

12.3 Front panel keys ! POWER ON-OFF KEY

-By pressing momentarily the unit turns on and initiates power on self-test. -By pressing again momentarily the unit turns off. ) ZERO / CLEAR ERROR/ESCAPE KEY

-It is used to reset the weight display to zero. Zeroing will be effective only if the scale is stable, in gross mode, and the weight is within + 2% (or 10%) of max weighing capacity. -If an error is present on the display press this key to acknowledge. -During a dialogue or entry, press this key to exit .

> NET / FUNCTION KEY / MOVE ONE DIGIT (Move left and right) -It is used to tare the scale. Taring will be effective only if the scale is stable and within the max weighing capacity. -If the scale has already been tared pressing of the key will cause the tare to be

cancelled and the weight display to return to Gross mode. - During an entry pressing this key will move the blinking cursor one digit to the right. -If the key is kept pressed for more than 3 sec the function menu is entered.

When the display shows Fn 00, press ( to return to weight display or type in the function code desired in order to select a function. The function menu is used to activate a number of software utilities. Refer to FUNCTION MENU, chapter 14 for details.

~ TARE RECALL KEY / PRESET TARE / INCREMENT FLASHING DIGIT In Net mode only : Pressing this key will cause the tare memory to be displayed briefly. In Gross mode: This key is used for entering a preset tare via the keyboard.

The display shows PtAre and then 0 0 0 0 0 . Use the > and ~ keys to enter the

desired tare and press P to proceed or press ) to abort. When P is pressed the tare keyed in will be automatically in effect and the weight display will turn to Net mode. To be accepted the tare value must be within the weighing range. The preset tare will be lost in power down.

( PRINT / ACCUMULATE KEY / ACCEPT ENTRY It is used to transmit weight data to peripheral devices via the serial port 1.

The transmitted weight will also be accumulated. The weight will be printed only if it is stable and within the weighing range of the indicator. Printing/accumulation will take place if enabled in setup (SETUP 1.1=1 and SETUP 2.t ≠00)

< TOTAL / BATTERY CHARGE KEY / SCROLL KEY (Move up and down) It is used to display the current accumulated total (activated only if SETUP 1.1=1).

Press < again to see the number of weighings.

Press < again to end the total display or

Press ( to print/delete the total. If the key is kept pressed for more than 5 sec the battery charge in % of capacity is

displayed. Press Y again to end battery charge indication.

13 DIALOGUE STRUCTURE Configuring the indicator for your specific requirements is accomplished through a series of ‘’Dialogues’’. There is one main ‘’Dialogue’’ which includes 6 (six) ‘’Subdialogues’’. The ‘’Subdialogues’’ contain the parameters to be programmed. The Subdialogues are accessed using the front panel keys and viewed on the display. Using these dialogues the user can program parameters such as display resolution, scale capacity, conversion rate and others. These dialogues are also used to calibrate the indicator.

13.1 Accessing the main dialogue (*) 1. Power ON the instrument.

2. During the self test routine, while all display segments are on (all 8 on the display), press (

momentarily followed by > momentarily.

3. Display will show A C C E S S briefly if PIN is activated. Key in PIN number and then ( to get into the calibration menu.

4. Display shows S e t U P, which is the first item (sub dialogue) on the main dialogue. The following table shows the sequence in which the Sub dialogues will appear on the main dialogue.

14 FUNCTION MENU The function menu enables the selection of a number of software programs indirectly. Such programs are the selection of the setup and calibration dialogues, the high resolution mode, selecting the desired print format and other service and checking facilities.

14.1 Accessing the Function menu While in the Weighing Mode, press key > and hold pressed for ~ 3 sec. Display shows Fn 00 Key in the desired function code (all function codes are listed below)

15.2 Calibrating the scale - Dialogue CALIBRATION Calibration of the LD5208 indicator is accomplished with two methods: Conventional calibration with standard weights Electronic calibration with m V/V values from load cell data sheets (recommended for high

capacity scales whereby the use of standard test weights is inconvenient) Calibration procedure is selected via the Dialogue CAL Prior to calibration the scale must have been parameterized via the PAR dialogue. After the calibration, calibration data must be stored in the indicators memory by means of dialogue STORE After completion of the procedure, the scale must be sealed against unauthorized use by means of the Calibration Lock facility. Refer to paragraph 17.7.1 for details. Scale calibration, either standard or electronic, is effected in 2 stages: ZERO calibration , or the so called dead-load adjustment, whereby we take a measurement

when the scale is empty SPAN calibration, whereby we take a measurement of a known weight on the scale

16.6 Programming the animal weighing parameters – Dialogue The animal weighing function is used when it is difficult to stabilize the item to be weighed. 16.7 Programming the PIN (Personal identification number) This facility is used in order for the owner of the scale to change the current Personal Identification Number that enables access to the calibration procedure. 17 CALIBRATION SECURITY To prevent unauthorised calibration 2 facilities are provided: CALIBRATION LOCK jumper AUDIT TRAIL COUNTER

17.1 Calibration lock jumper (CAL LOCK) This is a jumper JP1 placed inside the unit on the main board (PCB 803) next to the analogue circuit. With this jumper inserted the user may only change the SETUP. Parameter and Calibration menus can not be accessed. LD5208 units are shipped with CAL LOCK jumper not inserted. For table top enclosures the CAL LOCK facility appears also on pins 7, 8 of load cell connector on the rear panel. If the pins are shorted the calibration is locked. The position of the CAL LOCK jumper maybe checked by performing Fn48. If the CAL LOCK is inserted the display will show S E A L E d briefly. Then the display shows C A . 18 OTHER FACILITIES

18.1 Using the indicator as remote display An LD5208 indicator can be used in a ‘’remote display mode’’ as a slave to LD5204.

This connection is performed via the RS232.

That function is accomplished by setting : SET UP 2 : 2.t = 14

18.2 High resolution mode This mode serves the Weights and Measures Authorities during the scale verification procedure. This mode is accessed via Function 06 . While in high resolution mode, the serial ports are disabled. Port operation will resume automatically when the high resolution mode is ended. The display shows Hi rES briefly, then the weight is displayed in x10 accuracy for 4sec and then the display reverts to normal accuracy.

Press ~ to display in high resolution for another 4sec.

18.3 Locking the front panel keys This facility enables the locking of one or more keys of the front panel, for protection against accidental or deliberate actions. In order to lock the keys:

18.4 Installation of default parameters This facility is available in dialogue INIT. By accessing this dialogue you can load default calibration data for checking purposes. After initialization the weight display will act as a mV/V meter of the load cell output.

1. Enter dialogue SETUP and scroll with key ~ up to dialogue INIT

2. Press key ( to load the default parameters. The indicator shows A d CAL and returns to the weigh mode.

3. Or Press ) to exit the init mode and restart the instrument.

CAUTION Be aware that the default parameters and calibration constants will remain in memory until power down. If a subsequent STORE operation is performed previous calibration data will be lost. The default parameters are as follows : Par 1.P = 5 8.4 = 0

18.5 Updating the indicator with new software versions (option) This software version, utilising the latest technology in Flash memory, offers the capability of reprogramming the microprocessor In System. This means that new software versions or changes to the current version can be easily downloaded to the device without the need of opening it or removing it from its work area. Also customers need not buy an entirely new device but just the new software for it Each device comes with an embedded Leon Engineering bootloader. At any point in time and in order to program the device, the boot loader must be accessed. To download the latest LD software to the device, the Master PC used must also run a special program provided by Leon Engineering (LD5200 Flash programmer). 18.5.1 Preparing the PC flash programmer software 1. Install Flash Programmer files to your PC

Use a DB-9 normal PC to PC cable to connect the RS232 printer port of LD5208 to the RS232 of PC (COM1 or COM2)

2. Run the Flash Programmer software (.EXE file) The Flash Programmer window appears on your PC screen

3. COM Port : Make sure that the COM port mentioned on the Windows screen is the same PC COM port, to which the indicator is connected. If not, select the correct port using the selections available (COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4)

4. File : Click on the File field of the Flash Programmer window, select directory path (where the software of the LD5200 is stored) and double click the software version (.FLX file) you wish to download to the instrument

5. Press the button ‘’Program’’ on the PC screen 18.5.2 Updating procedure 1. Enter the dialogue SetUP in the indicator and press P

2. Use key ~ to scroll until B o o t is displayed.

3. Press P . The device enters in its programming mode and will expect the new software from the PC. When the download is complete the device will automatically reset and it will run the updated software version.

4. If ) was pressed the device will exit to the previous menu.

19 TROUBLE SHOOTING

19.1 Maintenance The unit does not require any routine maintenance. It may be necessary to perform periodic checks of the calibration of the scale due to mechanical reasons. The frequency of the calibration checks depends on the application conditions and on the required measuring accuracy.

19.2 Handling of malfunctions In case of malfunction the user should contact the supplier, as the unit may probably need service from an experienced technician.

+ 30 210 55 52 048 The only cases in which the user is allowed to take some actions are the following : It may happen that, in exceptional conditions, the unit locks on a wrong memory location and

it is not possible to restart because the keyboard is not operative. To restart is necessary to switch the power OFF then ON again.

In case of a problem with the load cell connection:

Check input and output resistance, and resistance between any terminal and shield. Check load cell connection and cable.

In case of problems with the power supply:

Check output of 9V DC power adaptor. Check voltage of internal 6V battery. (Acceptable levels 5.75V to 6.45V)

In case of an unexpected event, caused by software or hardware reasons, the operator is

prompted with the message E r r x x , where xx is the Error code. Program is halted.

Press ) momentarily to acknowledge the error and proceed as indicated in the error operator response. Errors may occur during setup, programming, power-up and during operation.
