Persian ObservationsI am an Iranian (Persian) and one
of only a few technically qualifiedtechnicians in Tehran.
I wonder if any of your readerswould be willing to send some of theirschematics to me for no return, un-less they might be interested in Per-sian stamps. In this part of the worldradios, TV sets and other electronicequipment are sold without sche-matics . . .
In your February 1965 issue (page68) under "Tough Dog Corner,"Walter Anderson's intermittent troublerequires some explanation:
In the first place, what are suchhuge capacitors (220 µ1 and 470 µf)doing bypassing screens and plates inan IF circuit?
Assuming that the intermittent Mr.Anderson discovered was shorting ofthese capacitors (of course, they werenot intermittently open because openbypassers would not kill the entirevideo), and also assuming he did usea voltmeter prior to suspecting thesehuge bypassers, did he not find theplates and the screens of both stagesat ground potential? If he did, whatis so tough about this trouble? If hedid not, how did he arrive at his con-clusions?
Each time either or both guiltycapacitors shorted out, it must havelasted some time or the owner wouldnot have bothered to bring the set in.Again assuming that the longest timethat one of these capacitors shortedout was one minute, in this one minutewhat would have happened to the 2202 resistor in series with the plate andscreen of the 2nd IF? Could a half-watter stand more than a whole ampof current that long?
I personally have had more troublewith these bypassers than any othercircuit component. But Mr. Ander-son's trouble seems a little unusual,especially with the values of the by-pass capacitors.

Another Facet of DIY
Service -dealers and technicianshave complained for years aboutnewspapers and mass -reader maga-zines "fogging -up" their status in thepublic eye. But, with few exceptions,little or nothing has been done byservice -dealers and technicians as agroup to change this situation exceptthrough "legislative" nostrums.
We are reminded of a few old"idea -provokers" that haven't beenobsoleted by space-age progress. Theyinclude "Charity begins at home,"and "If you want the job done right,do it yourself."
And that brings us to an interestingspeech which Vincent T. Wasilewski,president of the National Associationof Broadcasters (NAB), made lastspring. Said Wasilewski, "We believethat a society in which there is free-dom of expression, freedom of belief,and freedom of competition is a su-preme achievement. . . . But, "Thefreedoms we prize so highly them-selves generate pressures tending tolimit those freedoms . . . Competitionwhich is truly free and unrestrictedpermits, on the one hand, the growthof enormous combines which becomeso powerful as to endanger the free-dom of all of us . . . On the otherhand, free competition can result inan excess of competitive zeal which inits lowest form deteriorates into de-ception and fraud."
Then he went on to say that wher-ever these "unfortunate side effects"occur, "there is a strong outcry forcontrol. The public is offended; itseeks a remedy and the handiestremedy is legislative restrictions im-posed by government."
For this reason, he said, there isonly one position that American busi-nessmen can take if they truly wishto remain free of further government-al control.
"We will accept not only the re-sponsibility of our own individual ac-tions, but also for the actions of ourassociates . . .
"If we do not, we abdicate the re-sponsibility to the government."
And there you have it-in plain,simple language. If you won't cleanup your own back -yard through self-regulative, joint effort; if you can'tdo it yourself, then you'll get licensing-which is no guarantee that yourstatus will "automatically" improve inthe public eye. If you want guaran-teed results-DIY!

Video Amplifiers: The video amplifier Q9 is an NPNsilicon transistor operating from a collector supply voltageof +160v. This voltage is obtained by rectifying the pulsetapped off the primary of the high voltage transformer.In the absence of a signal from the video detector, thevideo amplifier is biased to conduction so that its collectorvoltage is approximately +20v. This bias is applied to theemitter from the voltage division of resistors R55 and R59.The resulting negative base voltage is partially counter-balanced by the flow of current through R50 so that thevoltage across the video detector diode remains practicallyat zero. This biasing arrangement, in the absence of signal,reduces the video amplifier gain and no snow appears onthe CRT. If the voltage is too high, the maximum avail-able video drive is reduced.
As the negative going signal is applied to the base ofthe video amplifier, the sync tips drive the video amplifiertoward cutoff and appear at the collector as a positivegoing signal, which is then applied to the cathode of theCRT through C44.
The collector of the video amplifier supplies 4.5 Mcto the audio IF amplifier through transformer 11. Thistransformer also acts as a trap to reduce the amount of4.5 Mc beat interference visible in the picture. The videoamplifier also supplies a sync positive signal to the AGCamplifier and the sync separator.
4.5 Mc Sound IF: The 4.5 Mc audio is amplified andlimited by two stages, with the limiting done principallyby the second stage.
The FM audio detector is of the conventional discrimi-nator type and except for the impedance of the circuit, itlooks very much like the types used in tube receivers.
Audio: This receiver utilizes a class "A" audio systemconsisting of a driver and an output stage capable of de-livering 500 mw of undistorted output. The input stageoperates between B- and chassis ground. The collectorof this stage is directly coupled to the base of the outputtransistor which operates between B- and B+ withB- applied to the emitter through R21 and B+ applied tothe collector through the primary of the output trans-former. B+, in this circuit, is +24v and B- is -32v.This difference of potential of approximately 50v isacross the collector -emitter junction, with the collectorpositively biased with respect to the emitter. This arrange-ment improves the efficiency of the audio system and keepsthe total current drain down to a minimum.
AGC Amplifier: The sync positive signal from thecollector of the video amplifier is divided down towardsthe -18-v bus, by the combined resistance of R56,R57A and R58, resulting in a voltage only slightly higherthan chassis potential. The signal is then taken off thevariable arm of R57A and applied to the base of the AGCamplifier. The emitter of this NPN transistor is connectedto a secondary winding of the high voltage transformer, atwhich point there exists a 7-v negative pulse. This pulseis attenuated by R54 before application to the emitter ofthe AGC amplifier. With relatively low levels of sync posi-tive (low antenna signal) applied to the base, this transis-

tor will be cut off. In this off state resistors R53, R40,R32 and R31 divide the +150 v to +5 v for the tunerAGC and +3 v for IF AGC, resulting in maximum gainfor these sections. If a stronger signal is received, resultingin higher levels of sync positive at the base of the AGCamplifier, the transistor will turn on, but only if thesepositive sync tips coincide with the negative horizontalpulse at the emitter. With the transistor conducting, the150 v will be divided down to a lower level than previous-ly, resulting in lesser voltages for both tuner and IF AGC.These lower AGC voltages will decrease the gain of boththe tuner and the first two IF stages. R57A controls theamplitude of the positive sync tips applied to the base ofthe AGC amplifier and is adjusted for maximum videodrive without overload. Buzz is usually the first sign ofoverload.

The tuner RF transistor and the 1st and 2nd IF ampli-fier transistors, Q4 and Q5, are biased to operate such thatan increase in emitter current reduces the gain.
Since these three transistors are NPN types, currentis increased by making the base voltage more positive andgain is thereby decreased.
Q11 has a pulse from the horizontal output transformerimpressed on its collector and a positive -going compositevideo signal on its base. Q11 will therefore conduct duringthe sync pulse interval and its conduction will change inrelation to the sync pulse level which is proportional tothe signal strength.
For an increase in signal, Q11 will conduct heaviercausing the voltage across R153 and R154 to increase.

This decreases the voltage on the base of Q10 causing itsconduction to decrease. A reduction in the collector cur-rent of Q10 raises the positive voltage at the junction ofR152 and R315 which is the AGC voltage impressed,through RC filters, on the bases of Q4 and Q5, the 1st and2nd video IF amplifier transistors. Since this is a rise inthe forward bias of those two stages, the gains will de-crease.

Since this voltage is im-pressed on the base of Q9 through R151, Q9 will increaseits conduction, drawing more current through R147 andthereby raising the RF AGC voltage. Since the RF transis-tor, like those in the IF, is biased to go down in gainwith an increase in conduction, the increased AGC voltageon its base will increase conduction and reduce its gain.

Sound IF Padding: In the event of sync buzz in theaudio, check (L2) interstage transformer bottom core formaximum output. The bottom core of L2 can be peakedat two different settings. The proper setting should bewith the bottom core closest to the circuit panel. Thebottom core can be adjusted from the top of the trans-former without the need to pull the chassis.
Proper Lead Dress, Sound Det. RFC (L40): RFC L40located on the video IF panel between lugs M72 and M73must be dressed up and away from the bottom of thecircuit panel. If it is dressed against the panel, someevidence of sync buzz may occur when tuning towardsmear.
Vertical Bands or Lines During Blank Raster: Thepurple lead running from lug M36 on the chroma panelto socket J1 pin 8 should be dressed away from thedelay line (DL1) and copper on circuit panel where lugM33 connects to RL network N3. Proper dressing of thislead should remove the vertical bands from the rasterduring the absence of video.

Part I
Typical rural or small town com-munities, a hundred miles or morefrom a TV or FM transmitting sta-tion, will frequently be serviced byone or more small, independentone- or two -man shops. Elaborateantenna installations are requiredin these fringe- or deep -fringe areasfor satisfactory TV reception -particularly for good color recep-tion. And these installations costthe TV viewer considerable money-in some cases more than the TVset. But in most situations, one ex-perienced, well-equipped techniciancan handle these jobs efficiently,meet competition and make a goodprofit on the installation. A plannedapproach can eliminate the need fortwo men or the necessity of hiringan untrained part-timer who willcost considerable money.
If you go into this kind of work,however, make sure you do the jobwell and use the best antenna equip-ment and accessories you can buy.Don't be tempted to indulge in"shortcuts" or use "bargain -coun-ter" material. Since most situationswill differ because of distance tothe transmitting station, terrain,proximity of obstructions, and thelimited amount of money some cus-tomers can afford to spend, alwaysgive your customer a simple, directexplanation for everything that youdo. If a complaint arises about the

price, show him what he is gettingfor his money and why. If you fol-low these guide -lines the TV ownerwill rely on your judgment whenfurther service is required. Remem-ber, sooner or later you may becalled on to repair damages done tothe installation by unusual wind-storms, winter icing or you may evenbe asked to move it.
Let's proceed to a typical loca-tion and make a preliminary survey.Our hypothetical installation site isbetween TV stations in two direc-tions about 75 and 100 miles away.The terrain is fairly open, flat coun-tryside - a small-town residentialarea with one- and two -floor houseshaving lawns and trees and powerlines around them. You know fromthe beginning that you'll need arotator. And if no UHF stations aretelecasting or planned in this areain the near future, you can make arough "guesstimate" that a goodhigh -gain VHF broad -banded yagi-or log -periodic type antenna,mounted about 40 ft above groundlevel, will give optimum results.
But if you are not thoroughlyfamiliar with the area - don't al-ready know what a given antennawill do here and you do have field -strength measuring equipment -then measure the signal first. Youshould have 100 µV from eachchannel received on whatever an -

tenna you use or plan to select andat the height you intend to erect it.You can measure the signal eitherfrom near ground level on yourfield -strength meter and adjustablehalf -wave dipole or temporarily runup the antenna you plan to use andmeasure the signal direct. If youmeasure the signal on the field -strength setup near ground level, ofcourse, you'll have to calculate orestimate (if you've had previous ex-perience in the area) what yoursignal -strength will be on the an-tenna you intend to use at the heightyou plan to mount it. But don't for-get to make allowances for lead-in

losses during wet weather based onwhatever kind of lead-in you intendto use. In this business it is helpfulto know the db loss of your lead-in,wet vs dry, and the db gain of yourantenna on each channel you planto receive. This data is availablefrom manufacturers' literature. Weassume here that you already have areasonably good idea about the an-tenna you plan to use, based onprevious experience in your neigh-borhood, so we will concentrateprimarily on mast, accessories andinstallation problems.
Mast and AccessoriesSelect a good, heavy-duty, cor-
rosion -resistant tubular telescoping -type mast. A 40 ft mast in four sec-tions is best. A 50 -ft, five -sectionmast is about maximum height forone man to handle safely. For housetop mount, 30 -ft, three -sections ismaximum. For the customer who
needs or can afford to go higher,switch to the triangular, telescoping,crank -up tower. And if a customerinsists that you use left -over gas orwater pipe he has on hand, thenrun - don't walk - back to yourshop, and don't look back. Pick amast with "L" locking screws. Noth-ing can be more frustrating andtime consuming than a rusty slottedset screw that won't let go. And youwill find that the heavy, corrosion-resistant tubing will slip up anddown easily year after year even ina strong breeze.
You have a number of rotors toselect from. My setup calls for theoffset type with thrust bearingmounted above the rotor. If the ro-tor should require shop work I candrop it off the mast and leave theantenna supported temporarily bythe thrust bearing.
Select a good guy -wire. A 6x18stranded, corrosion -resistant orhardened aluminum alloy, depend-ing on the antenna price, is best.
Various types of wall bracketsare available. I keep a few whichhave two -in. clearance and somewith eight -in. clearance for oldertype overhanging roofs. Heavythree -in. screweyes are adequatefor guy anchoring in most cases oninstallations up to 50 ft. Used har-row discs with a 1/2 in. pipe stakedriven through the center hole makea quick ground mount base for yourmast. A want ad in your local paper

will bring farm boys in with bushelsof them at 50¢ apiece.
When you find a mast, antennaor other equipment that fits in bestwith your particular operation, stickwith it until something better ismade. If you standardize your in-stallations and procedures, you'llsave much time.
The large, single flat -top, allchannel antenna suits my operationbest. The antenna I use folds andunfolds easily, locks positively, andhas a folded dipole for easy lead-incontinuity checking. And if yourfavorite antenna doesn't have lock-ed terminal bolts, put lock nuts onit before you put it up. If it hassheet aluminum wing nuts on thelead-in terminal bolts, replace themwith machined types. You'll blessyour foresight the first cold, driz-zly day you have to replace a lead-in.
You can buy repair parts for any'good brand of antenna or rotator.Keep parts on hand that you rou-tinely need after a wind or electricalstorm. And by using the same typesconsistently you will find your"bone pile" a good source for parts.
Tools You'll NeedYour one-man installations will
be made easier and quicker andthus more profitable if you have theproper tools on hand. You'll needthe usual array of hand tools. A 36 -ft extension ladder will put you on
top of most two story houses. Two16 -ft straight aluminum ladderswith roof hooks are necessary. Butmake sure you don't go poking al-uminum ladders around poorly in-sulated power lines. Additionally,a 10 -ft aluminum ladder is helpful.You'll need it for those roof -mount-ed telescoping masts and for gettingunderneath low overhanging eaves.One 5 or 6 ft stepladder will roundout the ladder department. You'llneed it for a multitude of jobs, in-cluding driving tee -posts for ground -mounted guy anchors.
Other tools include: 1/2, 'A and3/16 in. bits to drill starting holesfor screweyes and mounting brack-ets. A battery -powered hand drillis ideal for this work. If you don'thave one, you'll need a good heavyextension cable long enough to runinto the house or garage for power.
Your most -used tools will be apair of heavy, 6 -in. side cuttingpliers and a pair of slip -joint(water -pump) pliers for openingand closing standoff insulators andto substitute for vise, pipe wrench,the socket wrench you left at theshop, etc. Add to this 'A, 3/8, 7/16and 1/2 in. hex wrenches. A sledgehammer, crowbar and a short chainfor pulling tee -posts when movingantennas are others you'll need. A

Comfort and SafetyWe can't avoid saying a few
words here about your workingcomfort and safety. A pair of "clod-hopper" type, ankle -height shoeswill prevent turned ankles. Theyshould be thick -soled for easystanding on ladders and soles shouldbe cork and composition for besttraction on roofs. And don't for-get to wear cuffless trousers to pre-vent snagging on ladder bracketsand other protrusions. Wear shirtsand jackets with loose collars, es-pecially in cold weather when wear-ing extra clothing. When workingwith arms above your head, lookingup and concentrating on whatyou're doing, it is easy to retardcirculation to your head with snugfitting collars or hoods. This canresult in dizziness or fainting withdire results. Always be careful, bemethodical. If you hurry, you mayat best have to retrace your work- at worst, you may never workagain. When guy wires are attach-ed to the mast and cut to length,bend up the ends an inch or so toprevent the end poking you in theeye.

There's Money in Master
According to the latest informa-tion from the U.S. Census Bureau,the population of this country is get-ting younger. This population ex-plosion means more young families,more multiple -dwelling houses. Andthis trend intensifies growth of thealready expanding master antennasystems field, in TV and FM, VHFand UHF. And you'll have to serv-ice a lot of TV sets to equal theprofit from one modest sized MATVinstallation. Further, each TV setconnected to your MATV systemmeans a potential new service cus-tomer for you.
Before you can install a mastersystem, however, you must sell itfirst. This is not always as easy asit sounds. Each type of system re-quires a different sales approach.
Horne SystemsTwo basic ways are open for sell-
ing home MATV systems. First,you can use suggestive selling onyour antenna customers:
"As long as you're putting up anantenna now, Mrs. Jones, it wouldpay you to have a complete homemaster TV system installed. Thatway, you can have an outlet inevery room. Let me give you anestimate of what it would cost."
Second, you can promote MATVsystems in new homes, even beforethey're completed:
"Let me put a complete masterTV system in your home right now.Since the walls are still open, youcan get a very neat job and save atremendous amount in installationtime. Of course you're not going tohave a TV set in every room. Buta MATV system gives you completeflexibility. And you can move your
portable into any room in the house,or out on the patio."
This appeal is successful not onlywith new home owners, but withdevelopment builders, especially inweak signal areas. Be sure to men-tion that the system can also includeFM stereo.
Hotels and MotelsUnfortunately, the hotel -motel
field is very hard to crack at thistime. Virtually every hotel and mo-tel being built today includesMATV, but they are sold by theTV set manufacturers who general-ly throw in the MATV system alongwith the deal for the TV sets.
Unless you're experienced, don'twaste your time with this market.Stick to older and smaller motels-those avoided by the TV manufac-turers. To sell this market, youshould deal directly with the ownersor operators of the building.
Apartment HousesTo sell systems in existing apart-
ment houses, you should deal di-rectly with the owners or the realestate management company. Pointout how a MATV system can im-prove the value of the building with-out costing them a cent (the tenantpays a monthly fee). If you havethe financial resources, offer a leas-ing deal-you install the systemand collect monthly from tenants.
New apartment buildings requirea different approach. Here, youmust work through the consultingengineer and the electrical contrac-tor who will generally subcontractthe MATV job. Try to get theequipment you offer written intothe specifications. Then, you will

usually have to submit a competi-tive bid to get the job.
Schools
More schools are being builtevery year. And schools are an ex-cellent market for MATV systems.With the current emphasis on edu-cational TV, every school in thecountry will soon need a system.And many school officials prefer towork with a reliable local firm thanto deal with some large outfit lo-cated many miles away. Canvas theschools in your area and find outwhat their plans are for ETV.

One basic requirement to sellingMATV systems is that you be ableto design a system that works well-at the lowest possible cost. It'seasy to design a system that worksif money is no object. Most MATVsystems are sold by competitive bid,however. Only the technician whoreally knows what he is doing candesign a system that works properlybut includes minimum equipment.

for homes also applies to MATVsystems. In practice, however, thereare two important differences. First,you can afford to spend more timeand money determining signal condi-tions. Second, you can use more andbetter antennas on higher masts.
Two basic antenna types are in-volved - broadband and singlechannel. As the names imply, singlechannel antennas are cut to receiveonly one specific channel, while abroadband antenna receives a num-ber of channels.

broadband? In general, single chan-nel antennas work better, but broad-band antennas may allow you to dothe job at a more competitive price- depending on reception condi-tions in a particular location.
The rule of thumb is to use abroadband antenna in every systemwhere all channels are coming fromthe same direction unless it is alarge system (200 or more outlets)or it's plagued with ghosts.
AmplifiersLike antennas, two types of am-
plifiers are available - single chan-nel and broadband.
Broadband amplifiers are gener-ally used with broadband antennasand single channel amplifiers withsingle channel antennas.
Single channel amplifiers costmore, but they have two advantagesover broadbands: 1. If one channelgoes out, the others continue tooperate. 2. Single channel amplifierscan generally produce more undis-torted signal output to serve largesystems. (Recently, however, veryhigh output broadband amplifiershave been made available.)

put capability. You must choose anamplifier that can take the avail-able signal and make it strongenough to overcome the losses.
BalunsMost antennas have a nominal
characteristic impedence of 3000.But MATV systems use coaxialcable, with a characteristic imped-ance of 75n. And most MATVamplifiers have an input impedanceof 75 n. Therefore, the antennasmust be matched to 75f2 with amatching transformer, generallycalled a balun. The balun is oftenmast mounted-hence, waterproof.
MixersTo use a broadband amplifier
with single channel antennas, youhave to combine the antenna out-puts into a single line. The mixerdoes this. It is recommended thatfiltered mixers be used. Becausethese units are tuned to specific fre-quencies, there's little loss.
PreamplifiersEssentially, a preamplifier has a
low noise figure. To take advan-tage of the best possible signal-to-noise ratio, it is usually mast mount-
ed. Once the signal-to-noise ratiodeteriorates, no amount of ampli-fication will improve it. Preampli-fiers are generally used in weaksignal areas where channels are re-ceived at less than 1000p.v. Theymay be either broadband or singlechannel. Most preamplifiers are re-motely powered on the lead-in.
Filters and TrapsSome kind of RFI is always with
us. Some can be eliminated bycareful antenna orientation, butothers must be filtered or trappedout. MATV filters generally pass aband of about 6 Mc, attenuating allother freqeuncies. If either channel2 or 4 is very strong, for instance,adjacent channel interference willresult. And filters will not be ad-equate to eliminate this interfer-ence. What you need now is a trapwhich attenuates sharply one spec-ific frequency.
Traps have one disadvantage.They tend to drift, especially withtemperature changes. To avoidcallbacks, use filters wherever pos-sible. Filters do a good job if theinterfering frequencies are farenough away from the frequenciesyou want to pass.

Typical System DesignLet's suppose we have a five -
floor building, with 16 rooms oneach floor. We need a TV outletin every room, or a total of 80 out-lets. First, we split the signal in halfwith a 2 -way splitter. Then, wesplit each of the halves into eightparts, giving us a total of 16 lines.Each line serves one room on eachfloor. In practice, we plan our cableto be run as easily as possible in thespecific building involved.
Now that we've taken the signalinto each room, we must find someway of taking it off for the individ-ual TV set. This job is done witha "tap -off." As the name implies,a small portion of the signal is tap-ped off by this device, without dis-turbing the signal on the main cableline. Finally, the 7512 output of thetap -off must be matched to the30012 input of the TV set. The endof each line is terminated with a75i resistor, to maintain match.
Once the distribution system islaid out, we must calculate its loss-es. This is not difficult.
We have to make sure that everyTV set in the system gets enoughsignal. How much is enough signal?This varies by individual TV receiv-
er, but we allow 1000 or across75 St - giving plenty of tolerance.We establish this 1000 tav as ourstandard and call it 0 dbj.
To calculate the distribution sys-tem loss, we simply start at the out-put of the head -end and work ourway to the end of the longest linein the system. If the last TV setat the end of this line gets at least0 dbj on every channel, we knowthe system will work.
A 2 -way splitter causes 3.5 dbloss, and an 8 -way splitter loses 10db. After the splitters, the signalgoes through five splitters to getto the end of the line. A splitteractually causes two types of losses:feed -through loss and isolation loss.The signal must pass through eachof the feed -through impedances butonly one isolation impedance to getto any TV set along the line.
We must consult manufacturers'specifications to find the lossescaused by each of these impedances.For ex ample, a typical splittercauses a feed -through loss of 1.0 dband an isolation loss of 11.5 db (atchannel 13). To get to the last TVset in the line, we must go throughfive feed -through losses, but onlyone isolation loss. Remember, we
multiply the feed -through losses bythe number of tap -offs in the line,but we only count the isolationloss once.
Cable, of course, also causeslosses. For instance, let's say asystem uses 200 ft. of RG-59/Ucable between the head -end andthe last TV set on the line. At chan-nel 13 (losses are always computedat the highest channel in the system)RG-59/U loses about 5.9 db per100 ft. For simplicity and addedtolerance, we generally say 6 dbper 100 ft.
Total distribution system losses,then, can be compared as follows:
A 2 -way splitter 3.5 db; an 8 -way splitter 10 db; tap -off feed -through losses (5 x 1.0 db) is 5 db;tap -off isolation loss 11.5 db; cablelosses 12 db; which gives a totalloss of 42 db.
This calculation tells us whatwe require of our head -end. Wemust choose an amplifier with anoutput capability of at least 42 dbj.
For the sake of simplicity, let'sassume that all channels come fromthe same direction and at aboutequal strength - 6 dbj, or 2000iLv. We would then need a head -end amplifier with a gain of at least36 db.
Typical available amplifiers canhandle these requirements easily.As explained previously, weakchannels would require preamplifi-cation and interference would callfor filters or a trap.
You can make money in masterdistribtution systems if you keep inmind the following guide -lines:
1. Design your system carefullyand competitively. Never submita bid on a job without visting andsurveying the site carefully. To de-sign a good head -end, you must bethoroughly familiar with local sig-nal conditions. When in doubt, askthe equipment manufacturer forhelp.
2. Make accurate estimates. Toohigh an estimate can cost you thejob. Worse still, too low an esti-mate can cause you to lose moneyon a job.
3. Use good materials and installthe system carefully. Callbacks cancat up profits fast. And they don'timprove your reputation.

How Multipath Signals
Every service -dealer and technician is thoroughlyfamiliar with TV "ghosts" that result from multipathreception of TV signals. Many are unaware, however,of the degrading effect of ghosts on FM/stereo signals.As we know, when two or more signals arrive at theantenna via different -length paths, additional imagesappear on the TV screen. But multipath reception ofFM/stereo signals produce very deceiving effects. Con-siderable distortion, frequently blamed on poor dis-criminator alignment or operation, is caused more oftenby multipath reflections. Improper discriminator tun-ing usually aggravates the situation.
Of course, multipath reception occurs on AM sig-nals too. But this takes place primarily as ionospheric"bounce" over long distances and is recognized as anecho. When the signals are received over relativelyshort distances, however, the difference in path lengthis usually so small that little echo is noted.
FM Fundamentals
To understand how multipath signals can distortFM/stereo signals, let's look at FM principles.

When a transmitter carrier signal is frequency mod-ulated, the transmitter's output frequency deviates, orvaries, above and below the assigned carrier frequency,an amount proportional to the amplitude of the mod-ulating signal and at a rate equal to the modulatingfrequency. The relationship between the modulatingsignal and the transmitter output frequency for a stan-dard FM broadcast station is shown in Fig. 1. It isassumed that the transmitter's output frequency in-creases as the modulating signal goes positive, andgoes lower as the modulating signal goes negative.
This modulating polarity is arbitrary and in manytransmitters the phase relationship is just the opposite.Regardless of this phase relationship the output fre-quency changes at a rate which is exactly equal to thefrequency of the modulating signal.
Once again, the amount of carrier deviation de-pends on the modulating signal amplitude. We do nothave a modulation limit in FM as we do in AM. ForFM broadcast, the amount of deviation considered tobe 100 percent frequency modulation is established bythe Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and

Multipath DistortionAs we have seen, the output frequency of an FM
transmitter is constantly changing. If the signal fromthe transmitter to the receiver follows two paths of dif-ferent length, for instance, the direct -path signal willarrive at the receiving antenna slightly ahead of thereflected signal. In this example, the signal followingthe direct route will travel thirty miles. Part of thesignal travels twenty-nine miles to a high point andthen reflects another mile and a half to the receiver.Hence, it travels one-half mile farther than the directsignal (Fig. 2). Since radio waves travel approximately186,000 mps, we can calculate the time difference be-tween the two paths as follows:

If, for the purpose of illustration, we assume thetransmitter is modulated by a 1 kc sinewave, we candetermine how much change takes place in the trans-mitter frequency in 2.688 psec. This is shown in Fig. 3.
Each cycle of a 1000 cps sinewave would last1/1000 of a second which is equal to 1000 /sec. Asshown in Fig. 3, time intervals in sec are shown alongthe top of the reference line and degrees of the cyclealong the bottom.
We can now determine how many degrees of thecycle would elapse in 2.688 psec. This may be calcu-lated by using ratio and proportion as follows:

mine what percentage the modulating voltage wouldchange in this interval. Sin 0.968 deg = 0.0168 =1.68 percent of the peak value.
Thus, if the peak value of the modulating voltageproduces a 75 kc deviation in 2.688 I./sec, the transmit -

ter frequency will change 1.68 percent of 75 kc or1.26 kc.
At a time when the signal arriving via the reflectedpath is passing through the carrier frequency the directsignal, being ahead 2.688 tam, will be 1.26 kc differentin frequency. These two signals will interfere witheach other and produce a 1.26 kc beat frequency.
During other portions of the modulation wave-shape the beat frequency produced will be different.For instance, if we look at a time near the peak of themodulating signal the voltage is changing more slowlyand in 2.688 /zee less change in frequency would oc-cur.
In fact, there will be two times, one near the posi-tive peak and one near the negative peak, when the di-rect and reflected signals will arrive at the same fre-quency. The beat frequency produced will vary be-tween zero and 1.26 kc as the rate of voltage changevaries.
If the direct and reflected signals arrive at the re-ceiving antenna at the same signal strength, the result-ing antenna signal will vary in amplitude from zeroto twice the strength of either signal at the rate of thebeat frequency. This will make it impossible for thelimiter in the FM receiver to eliminate this amplitudevariation from the output. And this has even moreominous overtones for FM/stereo reception.
The values used in this example are arbitrary andare only valid for the conditions we have set up. Itcan be seen that the interfering frequency may be al-most anything depending upon the comparative lengthsof the direct and reflected paths, the modulating fre-

quency, the modulating waveshape, and the amountof frequency deviation.
Reducing Multipath DistortionThe cure for multipath distortion is the same as
that for the elimination of 'IV ghosts. Anything whichcan be done to improve the ratio between the ampli-tudes of the direct and reflected signals will decreasethe beat interference.
A more directive receiving antenna, one with a highfront -to -back ratio and narrow frontal lobe, will usuallybring desired results. In some cases a reorientation ofan existing new antenna installation may solve theproblem. In many large urban areas, near- and deep-fringe areas, however, a rotator may be required for"micrometer" orientation of the antenna to compensatefor changing propagation conditions. Also, simplychanging the height or position of the antenna willsometimes change the relative strength of the two sig-nals and may possibly alleviate or even eliminate thetrouble.
In some extreme cases it may be desirable to orientthe antenna toward the reflected signal rather thantoward the direct one. The objective is to receive onlyone signal of adequate strength and it is not uncommonto find a stronger reflected signal than a direct signalin some locations.
No FM/stereo system is completely immune tomultipath distortion. But careful selection of the prop-er antenna and necessary accessories for a particularlocation will generally provide the best possible recep-tion for your customers.

This 11 tube unit generates a keyed rainbow pattern.The generator measures 121/4 x 4% x 101/4 in. andweighs 9 lb. The offset subcarrier method is employedand the output contains ten gated color bars. The tenbars are spaced at 30 deg intervals. The signal withhorizontal sync pulses added is available for feedinginto a color TV set. The RF output for the instrumentis factory aligned for channel three but it can be re-tuned to channel 4 or 5 by adjusting the RF coil. Thiswill enable you to select another channel if channel 3is being used in your area.
A color amplitude control sets the level of thecolor subcarrier and can be used in checking the synccapabilities of a color receiver. The modulation levelcan be varied from zero to 200 percent. TheON/OFF switch is attached to this control.

Besides the ten bar color pattern the instrumentprovides patterns necessary for converging a color TVset: dot pattern, crosshatch, horizontal and verticallines. The horizontal lines are one scanning line inheight. There are 10 vertical lines and 14 horizontallines.
Circuit FunctionsThe block diagram shown in Fig. 1 indicates func-
tions of the instruments' various stages. A frequencydivider chain begins with a 189 kc crystal controlledoscillator (V1). V2, a 6CG7, is a 31.5 kc multivibra-tor which is synchronized by pulses from 189 kc oscil-lator.

crosshatch or vertical lines position. The 189 kc signalis also used to form white bars which, when mixed withcolor, form color bars. Output from the 31.5 kc multi -vibrator is used to synchronize both the 15.75 kc multi -vibrator and a 4.5 kc multivibrator.
The output of the 15.75 kc multivibrator is usedto phase -lock the 450 cps multivibrator and it is alsoused as the horizontal sync pulse. The 4.5 kc stage isused as a buffer between the 31.5 kc multivibrator andthe 900 cps multivibrator. Stability is obtained bydividing the frequencies in smaller steps. A pulse fromthe 900 cps multivibrator locks the 180 cps multivibra-tor and the output of the 900 cps stage is also used tosynchronize the 450 cps multivibrator. Alternate fieldsare scanned with the 450 cps so single-line thickness ofthe horizontal sweep is achieved. The 180 cps stagelocks the 60 cps multivibrator and the 60 cps stage out-put is used as the vertical sync portion of the signal.
One-half of V9, 12AT7, (Fig. 2) is used as a crys-tal oscillator to generate the 3.56 Mc offset subcarrierfrequency. It operates only when the switch is in the

color position. Its output is then fed to the 2nd videoamplifier, the other half of V9. Keying of the colorbars also takes place in this stage.
V11 (6C4), the RF oscillator is on at all times andit feeds a signal to the modulator one-half of V10(12AT7) and this signal is then modulated by the in-formation selected by the pattern switch. Horizontaland vertical line information, when selected, is passedthrough two stages of video amplification before beingapplied to the modulator.
The circuits are divided into two sections, the fre-quency dividers form one and the RF oscillator, coloroscillator, modulator and video amplifiers are includedin the second section. These circuits are mounted onseparate printed boards. The long printed section con-tains the counter circuits (Fig. 3) and the smaller sec-tion houses the other circuitry.
Voltage test points for adjusting the count circuitare conveniently located along the bottom of the coun-ter board. The counter potentiometers are located atthe top rear of the counter board.

"As you can see here, the burst amplifier output isfed through a transformer. The transformer is center -tapped so a signal can be taken from both the remain-
ing ends. Now, Scoot, a little fundamental knowledge.What can we say about the signal relationship fromeither end of the transformer?"
"That's easy enough-they're out of phase by 180degrees."
"Right. Actually, here's what they would look likeif you could see them both on a dual trace scope."
Bob sketched the 3.58 burst signal one above theother carefully drawing each cycle so that it was half acycle out of phase with the other. (See Fig. 2.)
"What's the reason behind that, Bob?""Well, the only good reason I can think of is to get
two signals so they can be used in a phase detectorarrangement and to match the impedence. As youknow a phase detector can work from in -phase as wellas from out -of -phase signals.
"Now, here's the way the burst is used."Bob continued sketching and drew lines to the
phase detector, and the killer detector (Fig. 2). Next,he drew in two blocks and labeled them "3.58 osc."

and "REACT. CONTROL." He connected these to thephase detector.
"See how they are connected, Scoot? They are allin a circular configuration-that should remind you offeedback-and that's how the oscillator keeps in perfectsync. The burst signal comes into the phase detectorand is compared with the oscillator signal. If the signalis off in phase or frequency-the result is the same-a voltage output from the phase detector is fed to thereactance control tube.
"The reactance control tube, in turn, adjusts thefrequency of the 3.58 Mc oscillator. So, you see, the3.58 Mc oscillator is always in sync, so to speak, withthe burst signal. And the oscillator is only syncedduring blanking. The rest of the time the oscillator`runs' on its own but at the beginning of each sweep-during the horizontal blanking-the oscillator is againphased."
"Hunh . .," Scoot grunted, "OK, now how aboutthe killer detector you've got drawn in here-how doesa phase detector have anything to do with that?"
"Well, the killer is used to turn off the color ampli-fiers when no color signal is present. If there's no colorsignal, then no burst is transmitted with the signal.And, if no burst is transmitted, the signal from theoscillator is rectified and the detector goes more posi-tive, or less negative depending on the circuit, and thekiller amplifier is allowed to conduct. You see, up tothis point the killer amplifier has been shut off. Andwhen the killer amplifier is not conducting the highvoltage pulse from the flyback charges this capacitor."

"Oh, boy! You'd listen all day to get out of a littlework wouldn't you? Well, only because it is fairlysimple and in the same general area we've been dis-cussing, I'll go through it.
"Everywhere I've run into this circuit it's beencalled ACC for AUTOMATIC COLOR CONTROL. The pur-pose of the circuit is to automatically control the gainof the color amplifier. Basically, the system acts like anAGC circuit except that it is applied to the color ampli-fiers instead of the tuner and IF."
"Well, doesn't the AGC take care of signal varia-tions-why do we need another correction circuit?"
"I suppose it seems like the AGC circuit shouldtake care of the job, Scoot, but it doesn't do the jobwell enough, so the ACC circuit has been added by afew manufacturers. At least one of the manufacturersclaims that the ACC circuit makes the color adjustmentand fine tuning less critical. It does seem to help. Andit also helps the color remain more constant when itvaries because of airplanes passing overhead, and so on.
"Now that you have an idea, do you know how itworks?"
"Well, I assume that we need a bias voltage thatvaries proportionately with the strength of the colorsignal. And, since you said it was in the same area asthe killer detector circuit, it must come out of theresomehow."
"Scoot, the killer detector voltage varies with theburst amplitude. And the burst signal is proportionateto the amplitude of the color information. All of thecircuits being used at present take the same voltageused for the killer and apply it directly to the grid of thecolor amplifier."
"On the sets I've seen with ACC, Bob, there isalways an extra tube in the set. How does that get intothe act; does it have something to do with the ACC oris that something else?"
"No, that's all a part of the same circuit. You see,anytime you try to change the gain of an amplifier bothup and down then you need more latitude to accomplishit. So the extra amplifier is used to increase the over-allgain so it can be effectively lowered when the signal isincreased. See?"
"Sure. Darn, Bob, I'm really soaking it up thismorning-maybe you should tell me about some of theother new circuits now being used. I'm sure it wouldhelp my efficiency in the shop and . . ."
"No you don't, Scoot. We've got plenty of equip-ment for you to get more practical 'cur from nextdoor. Let's go!"

Combination VONIZMTVMs
Both the VTVM and VOM areindispensable tools for TV -radio, HiFi and two-way communicationsservice work. A VTVM is necessaryfor checking voltages in high imped-ance circuits and simplifies the read-ing of P -P voltages. Current meas-urements cannot be made with aVTVM so in this instance a VOMbecomes a necessity. Therefore, anideal instrument, especially for in -home servicing, would be a unitwhich combines the functions ofboth in one compact housing. Com-bination meters of this type areavailable from several manufactur-ers.
The proper application of a com-bination instrument of this type canwiden the scope of service work per-formed in the home. You get theconvenience and ruggedness of aVOM plus the advantages of aVTVM for important circuit meas-urements which would be unreliableon a VOM.
Triplett Model 631The Triplett Model 631 is a port-
able, battery -operated combinationVOM and VTVM. It is basically a20,000 SO, VOM with VTVM sec-tion used for measuring dc voltage.It does not need an external sourceof power as it contains its own bat-tery supply. The VTVM section usesa 1R5 tube and has an input imped-ance of 11 M. Four voltage scalesare in the VTVM portion -0-1.2,0-6, 0-3, and 0-120 vdc. A switch onthe front of the meter selects eitherthe VOM or VTVM function. Andas the VTVM operates on the self-contained battery supply, the switchshould always be left in the VOMposition when the unit is not beingused as a VTVM. The condition ofthe batteries can be checked withoutremoving the case.

The VOM section has five dcvoltage scales ranging from 0-3 to0-1200 vdc. The sensitivity of thedc voltage scales is 20,000 n/v.There are five ac (rms) voltagescales with a sensitivity of 500012/vand coverage from 0 to 1200 vac.The unit has dcma scales of 0-.060,0-1.2, 0-120 and 0-1200 and also a0-12 amp provision. Zero to 150 M,in four scales, can be measured onthe ohms section. Also included isa provision for measuring audiofrequency output with the meterreading directly in db.
Sencore Model SM112The Sencore Model SM112 con-
tains both a complete VOM and acomplete VTVM in one portablesteel case. The VTVM section con-tains two tubes and is 117 vac pow-ered. The unit will keep the tubeswarm whenever it is plugged in,even if the function switch is in theVOM position. This enables techni-cians to change from VOM toVTVM operation without delay.
The VTVM section has an inputimpedance of 10 M and has 6 dcvranges from 0 to 1000 vdc. It alsocontains rms acv coverage from 0to 1000 v in six steps. The unit iscalibrated for direct reading of P -Pvoltages. The P -P scales are 0-8.4,0-28, 0-84, 0-280, 0-480 and0-2800 P -P v. The VTVM ohmmet-er can measure resistance from 0 to1000 M in six ranges.
The VOM portion has six dcvranges: 0-3, 0-10, 0-30, 0-100,0-300 and 0-1000 with a sensitivityof 5000 n/v. The ac voltage scalesare divided in the same manner asthe dc and have a sensitivity of 5000/v. The ohmmeter section has tworanges available 0-10,000 12 and 0to 1M. Provision is made for meas-uring from 0-1000 ma.

Don't let FM/stereo scare you.It's different, sure - but not thatdifferent. Like the color TV set,there are a few extra circuits. Un-like color, it's simpler. And, al-though a stereo generator is indis-pensable for certain jobs, you canservice most sets with a VTVM andscope.
Common TroublesMost FM/stereo troubles are
caused by faulty tubes, weak stationsignals or poor antennas. Tubetroubles aren't difficult, for thereare seldom more than three or fourtubes in the multiplex section. Weaksignals cause distortion and lack ofseparation, and are usually causedby improper antenna installations.Some salesmen push FM stereo andoften neglect to point out that line-cord or back -of -the -set antennaswon't give good reception in manylocations. A rule of thumb to followis: If a good outdoor antenna isneeded for color, they'll need onefor FM/stereo. Some packagestereo receivers have a gain control(also called AGC or fringe control)which is preset at the factory foraverage signal strength. Customersliving in fringe areas will requirereadjustment of this control to ob-tain maximum possible gain andbest separation.

An FM/stereo receiver can bechecked in mono to cover RF, IF,detector and power -supply troubles.There must be sufficient gain andbandwidth in the IF, and the detec-tor must be working on the linearportion of its curve for stereo toget through. A large share of thetroubles are caused by the multiplexcircuitry. Most pure stereo troublecan be detected by ear. Insufficientseparation or a fluttering 400 -cpstone during a stereo program usuallymeans that the local 38-kc oscilla-tor needs realignment. Whistles in-dicate interference from the SCA(background -music) channel trans-mitted by some stations.
Basic CircuitryThe block diagram in Fig. 1
shows the type of circuitry employedin some of the earlier multiplex re-ceivers. The composite signal fromthe FM detector output consisting ofthe L -ER component, the L-R dif-ference signal and the 19 kc pilotsignal, is fed to the input amplifiergrid. After amplification, the signalis channeled in two directions: theLd-R component (50 to 15,000 cps)goes through a lowpass filter and theL-R component (23 to 53 kc) isfed through a bandpass filter. The19 kc pilot is separated from thecomposite signal bandpass and then
fed to the grid of a locked oscillatorwhere the signal is doubled to 38 kc.It is then coupled to a balanced de-tector where the 38 kc differencesignals are demodulated.
Diode DI responds only to theL-R portion of the sidebands whileD2 responds to the -(L-R) phaseof the difference signal. The detec-tor outputs are then applied to amatrix network along with the L+Rcomponent. The final result is thatonly an L signal appears at the Loutput and only an R signal is foundat the R output. The L -FR com-ponent is passed through a delay linebefore it is applied to the matrix. Inpassing through additional circuitrythe L-R portion of the signal isdelayed somewhat. The L -ER com-ponent must be delayed the sameamount to obtain true reproductionof the transmitted signal. A de-em-phasis network flattens the audioresponse of each output.
More recent FM/Stereo receiversuse a circuit similar to the oneshown in Fig. 2. The compositesignal from the FM detector is fedthrough a composite amplifier to a53 kc lowpass filter. This filter al-lows the L-R and the 19kc pilot signal to pass and blocksany SCA signals that may be present.The 19 kc pilot signal is then re-moved and used to sync the 19 kc

local oscillator. The output of theoscillator is doubled and fed to theunbalanced demodulator. The 38kc signal applied to the anode ofD1 is 180 deg out of phase with thedoubler voltage at the anode of D2.
The composite signal, less the 19kc pilot is fed to the center tap ofthe secondary of T 1 . Both the L+Rcomponent and the L-R sidebandsare present at this point. Both D1and D2 rectify the positive portionof the L -FR signal so the L -FR volt-age appears across each diode loadat all times. As the 38 kc signal isapplied to the diodes 180 deg outof phase, +(L-R) will appearacross the D1 load and -(L-R)will be present at the D2 load. Whenthe L-R signal present at the out-put of DI is added to the L+Rcomponent the R voltages cancel soonly the L portion remains. The-(L-R) signal at the output of D2will combine with the L -FR presentand the output will be only the Rsignal. The L and R signals are thenamplified again and fed to a stereospeaker system.
Getting the Job DoneA great many FM/stereo repair
jobs can be completed without agenerator. Most of the jobs involv-ing parts substitution require only a
touching up of the separation con-trol. Where replacement or repairof tuned circuits are involved, how-ever, or the receiver is obviously outof alignment, a stereo generator willbe required.
If a generator is not available afair job of alignment can be doneby using station signals. Stereo re-ceivers which have 19-kc local os-cillators are easiest, because thisoscillator can be locked to the in-coming 19 kc pilot and tuned cir-cuits peaked to it. Some stereos,however, have no local oscillator,and amplify the incoming 19 kcpilot. In these cases, you may haveto borrow 19 kc from anotherknown -to -be -good stereo receiver.You can pick it off the 19 kc oscilla-tor output and couple it through a0.001 td capacitor into the 19 kcinput of the set to be aligned.
Alignment is simple if you re-member only two frequencies are in-volved - and the second is a har-monic of the first. As a tuning in-dicator, use either a scope or aVTVM across the diodes. The scopewill show the 38 kc waveform, whilethe voltmeter will read the signalamplitude. In either case, you tunein a station transmitting stereo andpeak -tune each coil for maximumamplitude.

Phasing CheeksThe next step is to check for 19-
kc oscillator phasing (where used).An out -of -phase condition will prod-uce a low -frequency motorboatingin the audio, with loss of separationand possibly distortion. Although it'spossible to phase -lock the oscillatorby listening critically for maximumseparation and no motorboating, it'smuch easier with a scope across thediodes. Referring to Fig. 3, if thewaveform is fuzzy, the oscillator isout of phase. It's in phase when thetrace is sharp and clean. In matrix-type receivers, the bandpass filtercan be peaked for maximum separa-tion by ear. The same is true of thelow-pass filters.
The aforementioned methods willget you through most service jobs.Expensive receivers and critical cus-tomers, however, will sometimes de-mand more precise alignment forminimum distortion. So if you do asubstantial amount of multiplexwork, an investment in a stereo gen-erator would be advisable. Mostgenerators provide composite stereoand 19 kc pilot outputs, which arethe most used signals in alignment.
Adjustments at 19, 38, and 67 kcmay be made easily by killing allbut the desired oscillator in thestereo generator and making theproper alignment. Generators whichhave a phase adjustable 19 kc crys-tal oscillator permit precise phasingwith station signals. You can cross -beat them, using a receiver as areadout indicator, as described forsyncing the local oscillator.

That familiar saying, "A chainis only as strong as its weakest link"is assuming critical importance toelectronics technicians today!
Why? Simply because our workdeals almost entirely with electronicchains of components in which sold-er joints are important links, andit takes only one bad solder jointout of perhaps thousands in onepiece of electronic equipment toput the entire unit out of commis-sion. Yet, far too many of our col-leagues don't realize the importanceof good soldering equipment, ma-terials and techniques.
What is Solder?We know that most solder (the
kind we ordinarily use, anyway) ismade of lead and tin. Most peoplebelieve that the higher the tin con-tent the higher the melting pointof the solder, but this is not neces-
sarily true-it depends on whereyou start.
The melting point of pure lead isabout 620°F, whereas pure tin'smelting point is about 460°F. Start-ing from no tin at all (100 percentlead), as the amount of tin is in-creased, the melting point of thesolder decreases, reaching a mini-mum of 361°F when the solder is
about 62 percent tin. Above 62percent tin, the solder's meltingpoint rises again. The relationshipbetween tin content and the solder'smelting point is shown in Fig. 1.
Once a joint has been soldered,it makes no practical difference,electrically speaking, what the tin -to -lead ratio of solder is, but thisdoes not mean that the ratio is un-important-because it is. We knowthat heat is deadly to electroniccomponents and that it doesn't taketoo much heat to destroy some ofthem. (We are all too familiar withthe consequences of too much heatwhen working on printed circuitboards.) Generally speaking, mostelectronic components undergo thegreatest thermal stress they will everencounter at the time they aresoldered into place; therefore, itonly makes sense to subject com-ponents to as little heat as possiblewhen installing them.

that is 62 percent tin, because thissolder has the lowest melting pointpossible. The melting point of the60:40 mixture commonly availableis only about 4°F higher than thatof the "ideal" 62:38 mixture. Ofcourse, tin costs more than lead,which is why the 60:40 mixturesalmost always cost more than the50:50 or even 40:60 mixtures thatcan be purchased; but the morerapid melting and the reducedchances of PC board damage, coldsolder joints and resulting callbacksand unhappy customers are wellworth the small difference in cost.
A well -stocked supply house maystock solder in a number of differ-ent diameters, but, in general, thesolder with the smallest diameter(within reason) is the one to use.We say "within reason" because youcan buy a solder so small that itmight take 6 in. of it to solder one1/2-w resistor into place. This wouldbe both ridiculous and unnecessary,but since we must keep componenttemperatures as low as possible, itshould be remembered that thelarger the diameter of the solderthe more heat it will drain awayfrom the iron and the work. Andthis means that more time will berequired for the joint to reach thesolder's melting temperature, givingthe heat more time to work its wayup the component leads into thecomponent.
Both acid- and rosin -core soldersare available, along with a wide va-riety of fluxes in the form of pastesand liquids. Only rosin -core soldershould be used on electronic equip-ment, however, because acid fluxestend to form electrically conductivepaths across tube sockets, switchcontacts, etc., and can gradually eataway wires and components. Evenpaste and liquid fluxes can in time

become somewhat corrosive andconductive. This is why many elec-tronic kit manufacturers will noteven attempt to repair kits con-structed with acid -core solder orliquid or paste -tube flux.
Irons, Guns and PencilsNot too long ago, technicians
could choose from a wide varietyof soldering irons - but only irons.Today, however, we are offered analmost infinite combination of irons,guns, pencils, tips and accessories.But bewildering though the diversityof choice may be, most of the newdevices were created to satisfy themany present-day needs that didnot exist 20 years ago.
PC boards are only one impor-tant example of a new set of needsthat soldering equipment has hadto cope with. It's possible, ofcourse, to work on some PC boardswith the heavyweight guns andirons, but even assuming a techni-cian has the skill (and luck) nec-essary to safely solder PC connec-tions with the high heat monstors,such a mismatch of tool and job isextremely time -wasting. It takesonly a few jobs to more than payfor the smaller pencil irons thatare made especially for PC boardwork.

By the same token, it is equallyunwise to attempt to use solderingpencils or lightweight irons or gunson heavier work - the lower theheat -producing capacity of the heatsource the more time is available forheat to work its way up the wireleads into the components; andirons or guns with marginal heatcapacity for the work also tend topromote rosin and cold -solderjoints.
The average -size service shopprobably could put to good use ahalf -dozen or more different com-binations of guns, tips, irons andpencils; however, in most cases onegun and one pencil should be ade-quate. The gun should be rated atabout 200 w or more and prefer-ably be of the two -heat variety. Al-most any soldering pencil in therange of 30 to 60 w is adequate- the lower wattages are generallyfavored when PC work is frequent-ly encountered.
Techniques
We won't slog through the fun-damentals of soldering ordinarytube -type circuitry here, becausemost everybody knows them (orought to!) pretty well by now. ButPC board soldering is somethingelse again. When soldering and de-

soldering printed circuitry, it's nec-essary to think not only about thesolder joints themselves but aboutthe components, the conductivestrips and the board too.
The more modern approach tothis problem, however, calls for us-ing a special spiral connector witha copperweld inner core, a layerof flux and outer jacket of solder.These devices can be employed forrapid, one -handed soldering (seeFig. 3).
The most common solderingproblem as far as PC boards areconcerned is removing and replac-ing components. Components aremounted to PC boards in two ways:double ended, where the compon-ents are placed flat against or par-allel to the circuit board and theleads come out both ends of thecomponents; and single -ended,where the component is "stood upon one end," so to speak, and bothleads come out of the componentat the end toward the PC board.Each type requires a little differentsoldering technique.
In replacing double -ended com-ponents (Fig. 2), the componentleads should be clipped as close tothe component as possible - if theleads are exceptionally short, cutthe component in half so as to use

the lead length inside the compon-ent's body. This way you can solderthe replacement component to theold leads and not have to removethe old leads from the PC boardand resolder to the board again.
To remove double ended com-ponents without cutting their leads(for example, when you don't knowwhether the component is bad ornot), place a small -tip solderingiron on the end of the lead solderedto the printed wiring and melt thesolder at the connection. Straightenthe lead with a soldering aid, re-move the iron and pull the lead outfrom its mounting hole while thesolder is still melted.
Single -ended components can bedesoldered easily if the proper toolsare available, but it can really befrustrating without them. One ofthe most vexing problems encoun-tered in desoldering componentsfrom PC boards is getting rid ofthe solder that is melted from thejoint. You can drain the solder awayfrom the joint by gravity if the jointcan be positioned higher than thesoldering iron, because the moltensolder will run back onto the hottip. But in most cases, of course,this is not possible; however, arather unique hand-held desolder-ing aid is available which will suck
up the molten solder when a smallrubber bulb is squeezed and the tipof the device is inserted into thesolder puddle.
Another problem that is just asbothersome is getting all the com-ponent leads to the solder's meltingtemperature at the same time. Un-less only two leads are involved,with an ordinary gun or iron bythe time you get the third joint hotenough to melt the solder, the firstjoint you heated up generally hascooled and resolidified again. If youattempt to overheat the first jointsso that they will stay melted longenough to desolder the rest of them,the high heat may severely damagethe PC board.
Soldering equipment makers havecome to the rescue here, too, how-ever, and now you can buy tips forsoldering irons and guns that areshaped so that all the connectionsof couplates, tube sockets, trans-formers, etc. can be heated evenlyat the same time.
Another problem common to PCboards is the repair or replacementof lengths of the printed conductors.Short breaks can be repaired simplyby soldering a short piece of barewire across the break. On longerbreaks, leave the insulation on thewire except where it is soldered.

Zenith Sales Corporation announcesits 1966 color television line, intro-ducing a $349.95 table model, and atotal of eleven different color sets un-der $500. There are a total of seven-teen 21 -in. models.
Twelve 25 -in. rectangular screen re-ceivers starting at a price of $625, areintroduced.
Philco 1966 SetsPhilco Corporation introduced 27
color TV models for 1966. The man-ufacturer introduced color TV receiv-ers in three screen sizes: 19, 21 and
25 in. The 19 and 25s are 90 deg rec-tangular types. The 27 color TV mod-els are spotlighted by the 19 in. porta-ble model 5300 WA. In addition tothis 19 in. model there are eight 25 in.models which contain solid state cir-cuitry. Both the VHF and UHF tunerand the 3 stage IF system are fullytransistorized. A selection of eighteen21 in. color sets are included in theline.
Admiral Master Screen ControlThree color TV chassis in the G1 1
series are introduced in the 1966 Ad-miral Television Line: 1G11, 2G11and 3G11. These are basically thesame as the G11. Chassis have a MAS-TER SCREEN control on the rear apronwhich changes the tracking procedureas follows:

1. Set the COLOR FIDELITY and TINTcontrols to midrange and the COLORcontrol to minimum.
2. Turn the BRIGHTNESS control to90 percent of full rotation and theCONTRAST control to produce a normalpicture.
3. Turn the MASTER SCREEN Con-trol to 75 percent of full rotation.
4. Alternately adjust the BLUE, REDAND GREEN BACKGROUND controls toproduce a B/W picture with maximumbrightness but without blooming.
5. Check for B/ W picture at vari-OUS settings of BRIGHTNESS control. Ifpicture lacks detail at high brightnesslevels, increase MASTER SCREEN con-trol slightly; if retrace lines appear,reduce MASTER SCREEN controlslightly.
6. Reduce brightness to slightly be-low normal. If any one color is pre-dominant, reduce that backgroundcontrol slightly. If you cannot getproper tracking, proceed to step 7.
7. It may be necessary to relocatethe red, green or blue picture tubecathode wires on the pins provided ifa B/W raster cannot be obtained withthe BACKGROUND controls. The cathodewires are identified by the red, greenor blue tracer on a yellow wire. If onecolor is predominant, its cathode wireshould be connected to pin P (lowdrive). The other two wires should beconnected to either of the N (mediumdrive) or M (high drive) positionswhich gives the best B/W picture atall useable settings of the BRIGHTNESScontrol.
Sylvania Introduces 1966 TVsSylvania introduced its 1966 color
television line which includes four 19-in. portable models, a 25 -in. consoleseries, and a number of 21 -in. sets.Robert J. Theis, president of SylvaniaEntertainment Products Corp., said the19 -in. sets have rectangular picture
tubes manufactured by the company'selectronic tube division. The 19 -in.rectangular portable models provide180 sq in. of viewing area and areavailable in champagne, mahogany,walnut, and maple finishes and styledin Contemporary and Early American.Designated models 19TC11 and 19TC-12, the sets carry manufacturer's sug-gested list prices ranging from $399.50to $449.50.
Eleven 25 -in. color TV consoles areannounced. Twelve 21 -in. color TVconsoles also are introduced.
RCA ExpansionThe Radio Corporation of America
announces a $50 million outlay to in-crease production facilities for colortelevision receivers and picture tubes.The expansion program is designed tomore than double the company's colorTV set production capacity within twoyears and to double color tube outputwithin three years, W. Walter Watts,group executive vice president, said.
A total of $36.4 million will bespent to expand color TV picture tubefacilities, and $13.3 million will beused to expand color TV receiver fa-cilities, he reported. Watts predictedthat annual color receiver sales willgrow from more than 2.3 million setsin 1965 to well over 5 million sets by1970, at which time color will haveachieved at least a 40 percent satura-tion of the nation's television homes.He said color will account for 25 per-cent of all TV sets sold this year andthat the total dollar volume of colorset sales at the retail level in 1965 willexceed that of black -and -white for thefirst time ever - rising to a record$1.2 billion. Douglas Y. Smith, vicepresident, RCA Electronics Compon-ents and Devices, explained that the$36.4 million allocated for color tubeexpansion will be broken down thisway: $24.7 million to provide addedmanufacturing equipment and supportfacilities for color tube operations atMarion, Ind., including 264,000 sq ftof additional manufacturing and ware-housing space and $11.7 million toprovide added facilities as well as 23,-000 sq ft of new manufacturing spaceat the Lancaster, Pa., plant. He saidthe company is preparing for greatlyincreased production of rectangularcolor picture tubes during 1966.

Difficult Service Jobs Described by Readers
Shorted DiodeA customer brought in a 1963
Pontiac radio, model no. 5730367.He said it had a bad squeal. This wasconfirmed when I connected it up onthe bench and switched it on. Thesqueal was caused by an open 30 µffilter. Replacement of this componentsolved the problem. The radio was"cooked" for two hours or so and itseemed to be functioning normally sothe set was returned to the customer.Several days later the customer wasback with the car complaining of lowvolume.We checked the antenna andspeaker before pulling the radio. Bothchecked out OK so the radio wasremoved from the car. With an audiogenerator and scope I determined thatthe gain of the audio output stage wasvery low. Replacing the 1000 µfcapacitor (C36), corrected this prob-lem and the radio seemed to be oper-ating OK again, especially on the localstation. But in checking the radio inthe car after installation, I noticedthat it had a low volume on distantstations. I called my partner out tosee if he thought the volume wasdown. He agreed that the radio wasnot functioning properly so back theset went into the shop. I replaced theRF transistor with no noticeable im-provement in output. With a noisegenerator, we began signal tracing atthe audio output stage. This checkconfirmed our previous scope checkof this stage - that the output stagewas operating normally. Moving backto the base of the first audio ampli-fier, it was determined that this stagewas also functioning properly. In fact,with the noise generator fed into theantenna the output seemed normal.All voltages checked OK. All transis-tors checked out fine on an in -circuittransistor checker. About the onlything in the set that I hadn't checkedwas the diode detector. A resistancecheck revealed that the diode had alower than normal reading in the re-verse direction. The diode was re-placed and the radio then operatedperfectly even on the distant stations.The radio was reinstalled in the carafter cooking for three hours. Fullvolume was obtainable on all stationsafter installation. The customer has
been in the shop since and said thatthe radio now picks up the distantstations with ease. The thing that stillpuzzles me is why the audio qualitywas so good with a defective diode.-Danny St. Onge, Lethbridge, Alia.Canada.
Hot Network ResistorA "dog" I'll never forget showed
up in a 126 RCA chassis. The com-plaint was "not enough width." Widthwas "shy" about two inches on eachside. A 1/2 w, 4.7 K resistor connectedto the center tap of the horizontalyoke winding was burned to a crisp.
Checks with a VTM did not revealany shorts or leakage anywhere in thehorizontal output circuit. I replacedthe resistor, switched the set on andthe resistor promptly began to smoke.I removed it altogether and placed asmall capacitor across the width coil.To my surprise, the brightness re-mained exceptionally good and thewidth expanded fully. I left the re-sistor out and the set worked fine. Idelivered the set-with exhausted pa-tience and loss of pride-and itworked in a very satisfactory manner.But the set was back in the shopwithin three weeks. Since there wasa complete loss of raster this time,I was happy to see it come back sincethis offered some hope of restoringmy pride.

The fault this time proved to beonly a bad 1X2. I experimentally re-moved the capacitor across the widthcoil and found myself back where Ihad previously started.
Now I began to reason, since addedcapacity restored the width, perhapsan open capacitor in this network wascausing loss of proper width and over-heat also. I looked for the capacitorthat most effectively shunted the
"width circuit." It seemed to me thatthe 0.0015 pf capacitor (see sche-matic) did just this. One side is con-nected directly to the width coil andthe other side is connected throughtwo capacitors to the flyback wind-ing.
When this capacitor and the 4.7 Kresistor were replaced the resistor ranperfectly cool and the set had plentyof width.
I'll remember this one for a longtime. If I had originally consideredthe relative "high frequency" involvedin this network I would have knownthat a "detuned" condition in thecircuit would have caused heavierthan normal current to be drawn bythe resistor. Sales of monochrome TV receivers totaled 662,755units in March, down 3.6 percent from the 687,746 soldin March 1964, but up 8.7 percent from the 609,538 totalshown for the previous month of February 1965. First-quarter sales of black -and -white TV sets totaled 1,904,302,down 9.8 percent from the 1,920,363 units sold in the firstquarter of 1964. Production figures for all television sets(color and black -and -white) in March totaled 995,956, arise of 13.5 percent from the 877,888 units produced inMarch 1964 and up 17 percent from the 850,888 unitsproduced the previous month of February. First-quarterproduction of TV sets totaled 2,591,898, a rise of 9.8percent from the 2,360,399 units produced in the com-parable quarter of 1964.
Of the total TV production, monochrome sets in Marchaccounted for 790,379 units, up 2.5 percent from thefigure of 771,488 for March 1964 and up 16 percent fromthe 681,365 units produced the previous month of Feb-ruary. First-quarter production of monochrome sets to-taled 2,089,041, up 0.7 percent from the 2,074,172 setsproduced in the same quarter of 1964.
Color -TV production in March totaled 205,577 units,a jump of 93.2 percent from the 106,400 units producedin March 1964 and 21.3 percent above the 169,523 unitsproduced the previous month of February. Color TVproduction for the first quarter totaled 502,857, a gain of75.7 percent over the 286,227 units produced in thecomparable 1964 quarter. Total production of radio sets(including auto) reached 2,305,993 units in March, up40.7 percent.

RCA 'Overlay' TransistorA new RF power transistor, utilizing an improved
"overlay" technique to provide higher gain at higher fre-quencies is announced by RCA Electronic Componentsand Devices. The new silicon "overlay" transistor, desig-nated RCA 2N3866, will provide 1w power output atfrequencies between 30 Mc and 400 Mc with power gainsas high as 20 db, according to Ben Jacoby. The electricalcharacteristics of the new device makes it exceptionallyattractive for application in RF power amplifiers, broad-band video amplifiers, antenna boosters, phased -arrayamplifiers and high-speed switching circuits, Jacoby said.This 28-v transistor is said to offer good gain at drivelevels as low as 10 mw for driver and high efficiencyoutput 1w power output the following minimumpower gains are claimed: 20 db at 100 Mc, 16 db at 175Mc, 14 db at 250 Mc, 10 db at 400 Mc and 4 db at 1000Mc. The transistor guarantee point is 10 db minimum at400 Mc.

This invention relates to a high gain directional an-tenna of the plane -reflector type and more particularlyto such an antenna which can be economically fabricatedand assembled for shipment and which presents mini-mum shipping dimensions.
The present invention is described as an antennaadapted to receive electromagnetic energy of the fre-quency employed in commercial television broadcasting.Antennas for such a purpose have been previously madein a great variety of forms, many of which are of con-siderable expense.
