Why some filter capacitors develop hum ...and some don't

I Aluminum electrolytic capaci-tors are widely used as filters inDC Power Supplies. This is be-cause of their large capacitancein relatively small size. All inall, they do an efficient job of

I I reducing ripple (hum) to ac-ceptable levels.

However, all electrolytic capacitors arenot alike. This is often why some types

seem to allow hum to rise to objectionable levels morequickly than do others. In order to understand why, wemust investigate actual construction methods.As you know, electrolytics are basically made by depositinga film of aluminum oxide on aluminum foil to form thepositive anode. The oxide is the dielectric. A semi -liquidelectrolyte surrounds the anode and is actually the negativecathode. In order to connect this semi -liquid cathode to aterminal, a second piece of aluminum foil is used. This isoften called the cathode, but it is not. It is actually onlythe cathodic connection. (The preceding describes a "polar-ized" electrolytic capacitor.)When high ripple currents are applied to polarized electro-lytics, a thin oxide film forms on the so-called "cathode".It begins to assume the characteristics of a second anode.This in turn, has the same effect as placing two capacitorsin series. Consequently, overall capacitance is reduced.Inevitably hum increases.This action is especially noticeable in electrolyticswhich useplain foil as the "cathode". This is simply because the oxidebuilds up over a relatively small area.Mallory avoids this problem by etching the "cathode" onelectrolytics. As a result, oxide build-up is spread over avastly increased area. Therefore, ripple currents are main-tained at very low levels for very long time periods.Of course etched "cathodes" cost a lot more to make. Butyou get them from Mallory at no extra cost. There's muchmore to the Mallory capacitor story, but we'll leave thatto another TIP.Meanwhile, see your local Franchised Mallory Distributorfor capacitors, resistors, controls, switches, semiconductors,and batteries. and not just any 12AX7A?All 12AX7A schematics look alike. And at first glance, all 12AX7A tubesalso look alike. Yet, the use of a Sonotone 12AX7A tube can make aworld of difference in performance.The 12AX7A, used in signal stages for high gain, has virtually becomethe standard in the low level stages of audio preamp circuits where noise,hum and tube microphonics become major problems. While driving to work the other day,a TV service truck whizzed by me. Notonly was he speeding, but he passedon a curve, just barely missing an on-coming car.

Frightening. Just think how TV techsare making hundreds of thousands ofhouse calls every day. Being on theroad so frequently means that you arerisking life and limb.

Consider that last year 37.600 peopledied and 3.057,000 were injured becauseof auto accidents. Based on the statisticsthe Automobile Manufacturers Associa-tion and The Travelers Insurance Com-pany, I estimate that at least one out-.side TV tech out of every 25 will beinjured in an auto accident this year,and more than one in every 2000 willbe killed while on the job, still moreon their own time.

Here are some figures which I hopewill be good cause for sober reflection.Collision with another auto produced39.1% of deaths. 74.7% of injuries; non -collision, 25.9% deaths. 10.1% injuries;striking pedestrian, 18.9% deaths, 7.7%injury; hitting fixed object, 11.4% deaths,5.4% injuries.

Driver error causes 82% of casualties.37.4% of injuries were caused by speed-ing. 22.1% by not having right-of-way,17.6% by reckless driving. 8.8% by driv-ing off roadway, 7.1% on wrong sideof road (16.9% of deaths this way), 2.6%cutting in, and 2% failing to signal.

Drivers 25 years old and under areinvolved in about one-third of all fa-talities, though they account for only19% of all drivers.

Don't blame women drivers for theroad mayhem, either. Though 39% ofall drivers are females, the ladies drivein only 13.4% of fatal accidents and19.8% of non -fatal accidents.

Get seat belts, take it easy on theroad. Act as if your life depended onit. It does.

I have found that frozen powderediron core slugs in transformers and coilscan be freed by using one alignment toolat each end of the coil. This providestwice the force which will almost alwaysfree the slug . . . I believe a goodplastic tool is less likely to break theslug than an Allen wrench.

TECHNICIAN Magazine will again publishits annual stereo issue in September.Stereo, I believe, is nothing more thana "gimmick" to squeeze more moneyfrom recorded music lovers. Please bearwith me a moment while I express mypersonal views.

I believe you can readily agree thatonly a small percentage of the populationis interested in true Hi-Fi. An evensmaller percentage can' afford it. Masssales over the past few years can be at-tributed to high-pressure psychologicalselling jobs and a desire of the publicto "keep up with the Joneses."

When the Hi-Fi boom of the '50s be-gan to fade, it became "fashionable" toown stereo equipment-a "new salesapproach" concocted by some of MadisonAvenue's "super salesmen." Now thatstereo is slipping, (ET "Tuning in thePicture," July), it is only logical to in-quire: What new "serum" is beingbrewed to give the audio industry another"shot -in -the -arm?"

Rock -'n -Roll - usually recordedthrough echo equipment from a closet-can he reproduced through a cheap a -mradio with little or no bad results. Butthe great music of today and the pastwas written so that every note from anumber of orchestral instruments wouldblend and reproduce pleasant overtones.

To me, the most pleasing sounds froma live concert are those heard at therear of a well designed concert hall-notwhile sitting directly in front of or ontop of the orchestra.

There is no discernible separation of in-struments at a reasonable distance froman orchestra. Stereo, however, is re-corded by placing microphones near theperformers. Of course this would not beobjectionable if the playback was ren-dered under precise recording conditions:with the listener's seat placed far backfrom the loudspeakers. But this cannothe done in small rooms.

Hi-Fi manufacturers were alreadymaking significant progress in the direc-tion of realism in music reproduction be-fore stereo. And monophonic repro-duction requires less precise seating, lessequipment and it reproduces the originalperformance more faithfully.

I wonder how much further along wewould be in true life -like Hi-Fi if stereohad not stymied monophonic researchand development? It is generally ack-nowledged that response is sacrificed inmost stereo recording techniques.

Let's call off this slaughter of goodmusic and return to logical methodsof reproducing music: With a singlechannel system. No, it won't reproducethe effect of a passing locomotive, or acovered wagon train in a "stereophonicmovie," but it will reproduce music as itactually sounds in a concert hall.

AN ELECTRONIC BETTING SYSTEM enabling pa-trons at parimutuel race tracks to place bets withoutqueuing up at betting windows is being demonstratedin operaaion. The patron drops a pre -purchased ticketof any denomination into a machine, punches onebutton to indicate the horse of his choice, and a secondto indicate which position he expects that horse tofinish. By means of punched holes, the machine in-stantly registers on the ticket, the horse and positionbet, the date and the number of the race. The ma-chine passes this information on by means of elec-tronic impulses to the Central Station.

MICROFORM SPHERES as small as 0.0003 -in. indiameter, 1/10th the diameter of a human hair, arebelieved to be the world's smallest manufactured part.The spheres, produced by Anchor Alloys, are usedas junctions and doping agents in the manufactureof transistors and other electronic components. An-chor's research section has developed new sorting tech-niques to assure consistency of specified sizes, in thecase of 0.003 -in. spheres, to a range of ±0.0001 -in.

BATTERY POWERED fluorescent lamps give a mini-mum of 15 continuous hours of light at an intensityequivalent to a 50 w incandescent lamp. The flash-light -battery operated lamp is expected to prove usefulfor power failure emergencies, mining operations, air-craft maintenance, pleasure boating, camping, andmany other applications. The self-contained fluorescentlamp was developed by IT&T engineers.

NUCLEAR ENERGY was used to detect a pipelineleak at the Pan American Airways hangar when allstandard methods for detecting the leak were foundinadequate. A task force from Tracerlab, a divisionof Laboratory For Electronics, Inc., imbedded a ra-dioactive source containing Cobalt 60 in a 3/4 in. di-ameter ball. To keep it free flowing, the ball was suf-ficiently weighted. Alter the ball was introduced intothe leaking solvent, its progress was watched with aradiation monitor. When the ball s:opped moving it wasassumed it had reached the point of leakage. Thiswas confirmed when the exposed pipe was inspected.The ball was easily retrieved and the entire operationtook less than one hour.

Color TV Is On The MoveColor TV sets sales should hit 450,000 units this

year. Some authorities think it will be closer to 400,-000 sets because of a shortage of color picture tubes.Either way it will be a good year for color.

We see 1963 as the year when color sales willcome close to 700,000 units. And 1964 should seethis volume push the million mark. That's big busi-ness. When you think that color sets in use accountfor less than 2% of all sets in homes, and fast risingcolor sales account for over 6% of all TV sales, TVservice dealers had better be prepared for a substantialmarket. By 1965 color will probably account for 15%of sales.

Now is the time for technicians to be preparedfor color. Start servicing now. Test instrument manu-facturers have an excellent variety of color test in-struments on the market, and the million sets now inuse offer a good starting point to be ready as colorbusiness expands.

Practically every set manufacturer is now sellingcolor sets. The few who are not will be making themby 1963.

The number of color programs on the air will bean important factor in accelerating color sales. NBC,which has retained a meaningful color programmingduring the lean years, is increasing color programsabout 30% next season to a total of over 2,000 hours.As a matter of fact, about two-thirds of NBC's eveningshows will be in color. ABC, which has lagged behind

the other two networks in the early color years, willstart a modest color schedule next season. No doubtthe emphasis here will be on color films. It is expectedthat CBS, which once did make a serious color effort,will be pressed to move into the field again.

In addition to network activity, over 100 localstations can originate color TV programs, and about70% can handle network -originated color programs.

Thousands of readers sell sets, as well as servicethem. There is an attractive profit margin in color.While profit margins on black -and -white might run15 to 25%, color margins more typically range between25 and 30%. And don't forget these percentages are ofa much higher dollar figure for color. How manyblack -and -white sets do you have to sell to make the$150 profit on one color sale?

In addition, the antenna requirements are morestringent with color, building up the sales and profitsfor antennas, transmission line, rotators and relateditems.

Still another attraction is that hourly rates forcolor servicing run higher than black and white.

There will be many new developments breakingthick and fast. New color tube designs are movingclose to the production stage. Imported Japanese colorTV sets have started in token numbers, and will beincreasing.

The important point is that the fellow who getsin there first will reap the major benefits.

membered that consumers do not buy a new set yearin and year out. But they do have their set servicedyear in and year out.

EIA has an excellent Service Committee compris-ing the service managers of the various set manufac-turers. Certainly from among these capable peopleEIA could have come up with an interesting sessionto educate the consumer on a subject that is nearand dear to his heart - and pocketbook.

Shops all over the country arepassing up color TV service profitsfor no good reason. If your shopis average, you're losing this busi-ness too. Many technicians turndown one or more color TV callseach week because they are afraidof problems beyond their experi-ence or training.

It is interesting to note in thisconnection that many of these sametechnicians began servicing B/WTV receivers with modest theoreti-cal training - some in the firstdays of TV - and they learnedby trial and error. Experience is

still the primary catalyst of success.An understanding of basic colorprinciples and color circuit opera-tion is necessary, however, if youare to gain experience while mak-ing a minimum of errors.

Elementary Principles

All colors in the visible spectrumcome from white light. Conversely.of course, white light is composedof these colors. White light can bederived from mixing or blendingcertain percentages of three basiccolors. The three colors used incolor TV are red, green and blue.

When these colors are mixed inquantities of 30 percent, 59 per-cent and 11 percent, respectively,white light is produced. This prin-ciple is used in the TV camera forcolor separation as well as in thereceiver for color and B/W repro-duction. By changing relative quan-tities of these primary colors a widerange of other colors can be pro-duced.

Each of these colors is selectedby optical filtering as shown in Fig.1. Blue filters appear blue becausethey let only blue light pass; redlets only red light pass and green

passes only green light. Each of thethree separate camera tubes pick uponly the color reflected from ob-jects which will pass through its as-sociated filter. This information istransmitted to the receiver and re-produced. A deficiency in humanvision makes the reproduction ofmany colors possible by employingclosely positioned colored phosphordots on a CRT screen. By chang-ing the quantity of light from eachof the three primary color dots, theeye blends these to form colors likethose in the original scene. Con-struction principles of the standard

three gun color tube is shown inFig. 2.

Color Broadcast Standards

The National Television SystemCommittee (NTSC) established TVstandards before color telecastingbegan - which created problems.The biggest problem was insertingthe chroma or color information inthe alloted B/W 6 me wide band.If a portion of the B/W bandwidthwere used to allow addition ofcolor information, picture detailwould be impaired. This problemwas solved by interleaving or mul-

tiplexing color information betweenthe B/W information.

This is possible because the stand-ard monochrome signal informa-tion is contained in energy groupsthat are evenly spaced at harmonicsof the horizontal scan frequency.This is shown graphically in Fig.3.

Harmonics of half the horizontalfrequency fall between the scan fre-quency harmonics or video energypoints. This is where the chromainformation is inserted for telecast-ing. In order to minimize the in-terference to B/W receivers during

color broadcasts, the color subcar-rier is placed as high in the fre-quency band as possible becauseless picture information is transmit-ted at higher frequencies. Since thesound carrier is located on the highend of the band, 3.6 mc was setas the high limit for the color sub -carrier frequency. Interference fromsound carrier beat frequencies andthe nearest horizontal multiple,however, necessitated a slightchange. It was found that the in-terference was least objectional

when the sound carrier was a mul-tiple of the horizontal scan frequen-cy.

Changing the sound carrier tothis extent would not allow exist-ing B/W receivers to receive thesound, so the color horizontal scanfrequency became 15,734.6 kc -this made the 4.5 mc sound car-rier the 286th harmonic of the linefrequency. In order to maintain anormal two -to -one field interlace,the vertical frequency had to be59.94 cps. Both of these scan fre-

quencies were within the normallimits for B/W reception and acolor transmission system becamepractical.

Color Modulation and Sync

The extreme accuracies necessaryin multiplexing a color signal maybe appreciated by looking at toler-ance limits for the color subcarrierfrequency: 3.579545 mc ± 0.0003percent with a frequency deviationnot to exceed 0.1 cps/ps. The sub -carrier frequency is the 455th har-monic of one half the line frequen-cy.

A block diagram of the broad-cast equipment is shown in Fig. 4.The 3.58 mc signal is developedby a crystal controlled oscillator. Apart of this signal is used to syn-chronize the vertical and horizontaloscillators in order to keep the videoproperly interleaved with the colorinformation. Another part of thesubcarrier oscillator signal is fed tothe modulators; one through aphase shifter so that the modulat-ors will be 90° out of phase. Inthis manner the two color signalswhich are to be modulated can berecovered at the receiver, since thesidebands are transmitted withoutthe carrier.

The signals to be fed to the mod-ulators contain the color informa-tion obtained from all three coloramplifiers; the signals are matrixedso the output is a "Y" (white) sig-nal (the luminance channel in col-or - standard signal in mono-chrome sets - ), R -Y and B -Ysignals. The last two are obtainedby subtracting the "Y" from thered and blue signals. Although somesystems use R -Y and G -Y signals,the principles involved are thesame.

The "Y" signal is transmitted inthe conventional monochrome man-ner. The R -Y and B -Y signals aremodulated 90° out of phase andadded to the normal signal. Re-member, this additive signal willhave no effect on B/W receivers,since it is interleaved in the normalsignal. Green information is recon-structed at the color receiver by sub-tracting R and B from Y.

The Color Receiver

At first glance much of the colorreceiver appears to be the same asa B/W receiver. The tuner, i-f andsweep sections are very similar. Thetuner has a low drift oscillator; slightdrifting in the oscillator has amarked effect on color reception.The i-f is basically the same exceptthat it is somewhat flatter in re-sponse and has a wider bandpass.A delay line and additional ampli-fication is included in the videoluminance circuits.

High voltage is generated in theconventional manner with a regu-lated output fed to the CRT anode.

A shunt regulator is used for theapproximately 3 kv needed to fo-cus the color CRT. Sweep failures,loss of video, sound problems,noise, and other B/W problems willall been encountered in color servic-ing. These problems are treated asthey would be in a B/W set. A fewadjustments or corrections mayaffect the color operation of the setbut these can be readily understoodand should create no unusual dif-ficulties.

Three sections have been addedto the color receiver which are notfound in a B/W set: The chromi-nance, color sync and convergencecircuitry.

Chromonance & Color Sync

A block diagram of a typicalcolor set is shown in Fig. 5. Theobject of these sections is to takethe transmitted information, de-modulate and matrix it to obtain

red, blue and green outputs for thepicture tube. Of course these willbe in the same proportions aspicked up by the camera tubes. Ef-fectively, this is accomplished byreversing the process used to trans-mit the signal.

In order to sync the color sig-nals and demodulate them, an ac-curate 3.58 mc source is neededsince the carrier was suppressed be-fore transmission. This is accom-plished by using a local crystal os-cillator in the receiver. To main-tain the exact phase and frequencyrelationship with the telecaster'ssubcarrier, a short frequency burstis used to sync the oscillator. Ninecycles (± 1 cps) are transmitted onthe back porch of every horizontalsync pulse. The horizontal blankingand sync pulse is shown in Fig. 6.This burst signal may be used tosync the local oscillator directly orfor afc type control of the circuit

through use of a reactance tube.The oscillator and its control cir-cuitry is shown in Fig. 7.

You will recall that one of theR -Y and B -Y signals was modu-lated with the basic oscillator fre-quency and the other with the samefrequency 90° out of phase withthe first. In order to demodulatethe color information, the phase de-tectors must also be fed two sig-nals which are 90* out of phase.

Several types of detectors may beused to demodulate the signalsthough the multigrid detector is themost common. R -Y and B -Y arerecovered and the matrix regener-,aces the R, B and G signals.

Information from the "Y" chan-nel is fed to the matrix where de-modulated R -Y and B -Y informa-tion are added. The resultant is R,B, and G information. Each ofthese signals is applied to its re-spective color tube gun. Some sys-tems apply information from the de-modulators directly to the CRTguns. The cathodes are all fed "Y"information and matrixing is ac-complished in the picture

When B/W signals are receivedon a color set, a color killer cir-cuit is actuated to prevent spurioussignals in the color circuits fromcoloring the picture. This circuit isshown in Fig. 8.

The killer is normally adjustedwith no signal on a "dead" chan-nel until the colored noise in thepicture disappears. The settingshould be double checked, how-ever, to assure that the setting is

not killing color signals by tuningin a color program.

Convergence Circuits

If you have ever attempted toconverge a color set, you knowthere are two types of convergence:Static (d -c) and dynamic. Severalconvergence methods have beenused in sets made in the past, butmost color sets now being manu-factured use basically the same cir-cuits.

The need for convergence canbe understood by recognizing thatit is necessary for each gun beamto land on its associated color dotat all points of the CRT screen.This is accomplished with the twoaforementioned sets of adjustments.Static adjustments are most oftenmade with permanent magnets lo-cated on the neck of the CRT.These are somewhat similar to iontrap magnets. Consult the manu-facturer's manual - these could beconfused with the purity magnetsalso located on the CRT neck.These magnets should be moveduntil the three beams coincide atthe CRT center.

Coils also located on the CRTneck are fed voltages from the ver-tical and horizontal output to de-flect the beam properly for eacharea of the tube being swept. Eachconvergence coil is situated so ithas maximum effect on its associat-ed CRT gun. A wave shape of atypical voltage which is applied tothe convergence coils is shown inFig. 9. The amplitude and tilt of

these signals are controlled by re-sistances and reactances so thatconvergence can be achieved for al-most any set of conditions.

Problems You'll EncounterOne thing you'll learn quickly in

servicing color receivers is notto adjust anything unnecessarily.Height, linearity, and width con-trols all have an effect on conver-gence and purity of the picture.Knowing what a good picture lookslike is half the battle: if the picturelooks good, don't try to make itbetter. The improvement in picturequality will probably not merit thenecessary time. Of course, if thepicture is obviously misadjusted,you're obligated to spend additionaltime and get a top quality picturefor the owner.

Converging a color set has beenconsidered a trying task. No oneknows how this rumor got startedor covered so much ground - butthose who have overcome this psy-chological hurdle have found littlemore than a comparatively lengthyjob. Just follow the manufacturer'sdirections. Less equipment is re-quired than used to align an i-fstrip and you'll find it much easierafter a couple of trials.

Purity adjustments are also easy.Don't rush - demagnetize theCRT and associated componentsfirst. You may find that this willclear up convergence and purityproblems without further adjust-ment. Dynamic convergence rarelyneeds readjustment.

No slide rule or logarithm tables are required when

this method is used to determine amplifier power gain

KNOW YOUR

Rapid decibel computations without the aid of aslide rule or log tables is possible with an approximateaccuracy within ±0.5db. This method is based on thepowers of 10. When it is realized that db expressesnothing more than a ratio, it becomes quickly obvioushow the system is possible in expressing power gainin db.

How It Works

Let's assume a certain amplifier has a power gain of10 to 1 (10:1). This ratio would be expressed as 10 dbSuppose a second amplifier has a power gain of 100:1.This would be expressed as 20 db. And a third amplifierwith a power gain of 1000:1 would have its gain speci-fied as 30 db. In other words, the db value correspondsto 10 times the exponent of 10.

For the 100:1 gain amplifier, as an example,100 to 1 = 102 to 1 = 2 x 10 = 20 db.

If a technician has difficulty with the powers of 10,

all he has to do is subtract the number of zeros from thelarge ratio number, write it down, and multiply the re-mainder by 10. A 10 db increment scale, derived fromthe powers of 10, and extending from 0 to 80 db, isshown in Table I.

A method must now be found to express the smallerdb values in one db increments. To do this, only threenumbers need be remembered. These numbers are: 1.25,1.6, and 2.0. These numbers correspond to 1, 2, and3 db, respectively.

Suppose you want to find the power ratio corre-sponding to 4 db. All you have to do is set these threenumbers in a simple table form, count backward threeplaces, and double the third number value.

For example, with three basic numbers, 1.25, 1.6,and 2, let's find the power that corresponds to 4 db:

1.25 to 1 = 1 db (3)1.6 to 1 = 2 db (2)2 to 1 = 3 db (1)Thus 1.25 x 2 = 2.5 to 1 or 4 db

Table II illustrates a second group of db values from1:10 db in 1 db increments.

With the two easily constructed tables, solution ofdb problems becomes a simple operation. Two thingsmust be remembered: powers of ten and the three basicnumbers, 1.25, 1.6, and 2. Let's apply this system to apractical problem.

Suppose we have an amplifier with a 1 w input,and a 400 w output. The problem is to determine theamplifier's gain in db. Upon inspection, it is apparentthat the db value will be larger than 20 db (100:1ratio) and smaller than 30 db (1000:1 ratio). Theratio of input to output is, of course, 400:1.

Rate the amplifier in db.1. Power ratio: 400:1 = 4 x 100:12. 100:1 = 20 db (Table I)3. 4:1 = 6 db (Table II)Therefore: 400:1 = 20 + 6 or 26 db.

Conversely, the power ratio of an amplifier ratedat 26 db can be found by reversing the procedure:

What is the power ratio of an amplifier having a26 db gain?

1. 20 db = 100:1 ratio2. 6 db = 4:1 ratio3. 20 db ± 6 dh 26 dh4. 100:1 x 4:1 400:1 ratio

Again, what is the power ratio of an amplifierhaving a 35 db gain?

1. 30 db = 1000:1 ratio2. 5 db = 3.2:1 ratio3. 30 db 5 db = 35 db4. 1000:1 x 3.2:1 = 3200:1 ratio

To make it still simpler, just find the ratio thatcorresponds to the small increment and add the numberof zeros as indicated by the first integer of the db value.

An easy method for finding the ratio equalling 26db is to look at Table II and go down the db column to6 db. Then place a 2 in front of the 6, giving you 26.Next go over to the corresponding figure in the ratiocolumn and add two zeros (effectively moving decimalpoint two places) to the number in that column, givingyou 400. This system also works in the oppositedirection.

If given the ratio of 400:1, you would go down theratio column until you reach 4. It is necessary to addtwo zeros, or move the decimal two places to the right,

to get 400 -then place a 2 in front of the 6 in the dbcolumn to come up with 26 db.

Although it is apparent that this system cannotcompete with a slide rule, it has sufficient accuracy forfield use. The accuracy is approximately plus or minus1/2 db. For values that lie between the table values forpower ratios, simply round off to the nearest value.

For Greater Accuracy

For applications that require greater accuracy, thissystem can be expanded very easily to include thetenth db values. To do this start with the first of thebasic numbers, 1.25. To derive a table for 0.1 db in-crements, remember three numbers; 2, 3, 3. Once againset 1.25 at the top of the list, and subtract from eachsucceeding value the amount in hundreds, as indicatedby the sequence.

The secret of the system is memorizing three num-bers: 1.25, 1.6, and 2. Memorizing those three num-bers, applying the powers of ten, and if greater ac-curacy is desired, remembering the 2, 3, 3, sequence,db computations become a very simple thing. As withany system, proficiency can only be gained throughpractice. With practice, these computations can bemade mentally. Although the system does not offerprecision obtained from a slide rule, or log tables, ithas the advantage of being completely independent ofthese devices.

Ever since the first election wasforced to move through a conductor,voltage measurements have beengiving more revealing testimony ina court of radio felonies than anyother witness. This is true in tubecircuits and is even more importantin transistor circuitry.

However easy it may be to readvoltages and compare them to thoselisted on a schematic, this "evi-dence" will mean very little to tech-nicians unless circuit operation is

thoroughly understood.A simple triode tube circuit is

shown in Fig. IA. Input and outputloads are designated R. and RL, res-pectively; they would represent re-sistors in a resistance coupled am-plifier, or transformers in an r -f ori-f stage.

Comparing Tube -Transistor

As every technician knows, the"filament" heats the "cathode,"which emits electrons. These elec-trons pass through the "grid" ontheir journey to the "plate," andthen follow a path through the load,RL, the battery and return to the"cathode." It takes energy for theseelectrons to get through the load,RI., and this results in a "voltagedrop" across RI-the greater theresistance, the larger this voltagedrop. The voltage drop is also pro-portional to the amount of current,Ip, flowing in the circuit, and isoften used to calculate the amountof current. For example, a platevoltage far below normal indicatesa large voltage drop at R. and high

plate current; a plate voltage abovenormal means less drop in RL, andless current flow. These conclusionsare based on a normal battery volt-age and normal RL resistance, ofcourse.

The same principles apply to theequivalent transistor circuit shownin Fig. 1B. The collector can becompared closely to the plate of thetube; the base of the grid; and theemitter to the cathode. The trans-istor, however, has no filament. Itrelies on a small voltage from volt-ages divider R1 -R2, applied to thebase element, to start electrons flow-ing through the transistor. The 0.2 vdifferential between base and emit-ter is called "forward bias" and willbe mentioned again later. Electronsare drawn from the emitter by thisbias and sent into the collector cir-cuit. They follow the same path asthose of the tube circuit through theload, RL, the battery and into theemitter circuit.

Estimating Collector Current

A typical i-f amplifier stage isshown in Fig. 2. Note that it is simi-lar to the circuit in Fig. 1B, exceptthat transformers are shown in thebase and collector circuits. Also, thevariable resistor R1 -R2 is replacedby two fixed resistors R1 and R2.This sets the base voltage to theproper value. Resistors are also in-serted in series with the emitter andcollector circuits. R3 between emit-ter and ground and R4 between theoutput i-f transformer and 6 v. Col-

lector current lc, flows through bothof these resistors, producing a volt-age across them, which is propor-tional to the amount of currentflowing.

Collector current can be estimat-ed by measuring the voltage acrossR3 or R4. If the current stops flow-ing for some reason, the voltageacross R3 would decrease to a verysmall value and the voltage acrossR4 would disappear, sending col-lector potential to 6 v. One of thesetwo resistors may not be present insome crcuits, but both are seldomeliminated. Their presence helps totell whether the transistor is con-ducting without opening any leadsto measure current.

If you are interested in estimatingthe value of current through R3 andR4 fairly closely, simply measurethe voltage across one of them anddivide by the resistor value. For ex-ample, if the voltage in Fig. 2 is0.5 v; divide by the resistance valueof 10000 and the answer is 0.0005amp or 0.5 ma.

A Typical PNP Circuit

A basic PNP transistor circuit isshown in Fig. 3 which resembles theNPN circuit except that the batterypolarity is reversed. This reversal isnecessary because the internal pol-arity of the transistor material isopposite from the NPN transistor.The emitter is now the most positiveelement, the base is next, and thecollector is nearest ground. Thesame principles apply except that in

the PNP circuit the electrons flow inthe opposite direction around thecircuit (see arrows). There is stillabout 0.2 v difference between baseand emitter for "forward bias" butthe emitter is now the most positiveelement in the transistor.

It is possible that either R3 or R4may not be present in this circuit,but both are rarely omitted. In thecase where R3 is not present, thevoltage at the collector is used tofigure collector current. If R4 is notpresent, the voltage at the emittermay be used to estimate collectorcurrent. In audio circuits, the trans-former resistance in the collectorcircuit and the voltage across it maybe used to figure collector current,since the current and transformerresistance are sufficient in mostcases to produce a readable voltageat the collector.

A typical power transistor outputstage is shown in Fig. 4. Resistancesare much lower in this type of circuitbecause the internal resistance ofthe transistor is much lower than thetype discussed previously. Collectorcurrent is checked by measuring col-lector voltage, which is actuallymeasuring voltage across the outputtransformer, RL. With a transform-er resistance of 1 ft, including speak-er, and a collector current of 1.0amp. the potential would read 1.0 v(E=I, x R). By adjusting bias con-trol R2, the correct collector voltageis set when a new transistor is install-ed. The speaker must be connected,and the proper input voltage sup-

plied to the radio when this is done.Some circuits use a grounded collec-tor where the transformer is foundin the emitter circuit. The presenceof voltage across the transformer isusually a tip off that the stage isconducting and working normally.

Relationship of Element Voltages

The relationship of voltages be-tween transistor elements assumesequal importance with collector cur-rent. In an NPN circuit, the emitteris the least positive, or most negativevoltage; the base is slightly morepositive; and the collector is nearestto the positive battery potential. Inthe PNP circuit, however, the oppo-site is true: The emitter is mostpositive, or least negative; the baseis slightly less positive; and the col-lector is farthest away from theemitter voltage.

This rule is illustrated in Fig. 5.In NPN circuits the emitter is usedas a reference. With the negativemeter lead placed on it, the baseis slightly positive and the collectorconsiderably more positive with re-spect to the emitter. In the PNP

circuit, the emitter is again used asa reference, but with the positivevoltmeter lead placed on it. Thebase is slightly negative and the col-lector considerably more negativewith respect to the emitter reference.

An exception to this rule is some-times seen in converter or mixer cir-cuits, where the emitter -to -base re-lationship may be reversed fromnormal because of oscillator signalvoltage in the stage. A zero or re-versed emitter -to -base voltage inother stages usually means thatthere is an open in the emitter cir-cuit, or a leaky transistor which isdrawing excessive collector current.A zero emitter -to -collector voltagecan be caused by an opening in thecollector circuit, or a shorted powertransistor if it is a power outputstage.

Voltages are usually measuredwith respect to ground and com-pared to those indicated on theschematic. Then, if a noticeable er-ror exists in a stage, the voltage re-lationships in the stage are checkedelement to element, using the emit-ter as a reference. (See Fig. 5). The

collector current can also be quicklyestimated as previously described.In most cases there is nothing toworry about in a stage if voltagerelationships are normal and thetransistor is drawing collector cur-rent. About the only exceptionwould be faulty alignment of a tun-ed circuit, or an open capacitor inthe i-f transformer or other point.

AGC Voltage and its MeaningAutomatic gain control (agc) is

accomplished by feeding back somerectified and filtered i-f voltage tothe "front end" of the receiver, (SeeFig. 6). The voltage is actually a de-generative voltage, reducing thegain of the receiver on strong sta-tions to prevent overloading and dis-tortion. It is usually obtained fromthe audio detector diode and volumecontrol system, but may have aseparate diode of its own to rectifythe i-f output. It is then filtered andapplied to the 1st i-f or r -f stage-usually to the base element, but oc-casionally to the emitter instead.This changes the bias and collectorcurrent in that stage.

Very little trouble is found inmost agc systems. A general rule isthat if the voltage on the agc linevaries when the radio is tunedthrough a strong station all is wellwith the system. If no change takesplace, the agc diode or some com-ponent along the agc line may bedefective, but it should always beremembered that a defect anywherein the "front end" or i-f strip willalso result in poor agc action.

In Color TV

No one anticipates a public buy-ing spree in color TV receivers ap-proximating that enjoyed by black -and -white sets in the early '50s.But barring an unforseen generaleconomic reversal, objective condi-tions exist today for a steady growthin color TV receiver sales.

W. Walter Watts, a Radio Cor-poration of America vice president,said recently before a symposiumof EIA, "I sincerely believe thatone million color sets could be soldin 1963.

"Speaking for RCA, we intendto give the customer the best pos-sible value for his money while pro-viding fair profit margins at alllevels of distribution . . .

"While we expect to see a strong,healthy, black -and -white marketcontinue in the years ahead, thismarket would be mainly in the areaof lower -priced, lower margin sets."

As most TV -radio service -deal-ers already know, RCA has spentmany millions to develop and pro-mote color TV.

More than 10,-000 independent TV -radio servicedealers have already completedservice training seminars throughcompany distributors. Additionalnumbers were reported attendingthe seminars which are being con-tinued to take care of the demand.The company is already manufac-turing two color chassis, one withmanual control and one which in-cludes the "400" Space Commandremote control system.

Sylvania has introduced threenew 21 -in. color TV sets. RobertJ. Theis, president of SylvaniaHome Electronics Corp., marketing

subsidiary of Sylvania, said the ex-panded Sylvania color TV line in-cludes two low -boy consoles andone vertical console. Suggested re-tail prices range from $695 to$775.

The position of Motorola, asstated a few months ago by Ed-ward R. Taylor, executive vice p:es-ident, is that Motorola does notplan to introduce a color receiverat this time. Motorola is develop-ing its own rectangular 23 in. pic-ture tube which it hopes to haveready for the market within a year.His company believes this tube willopen the door to greater color setsales through creation of a morecompact package and ultimatelylead to lower color TV set prices.

Installation, alignment and maintenance of audio

modulated VLF and CB remote control equipment

Installation and maintenance ofgarage door openers is a "natural"for wide-awake TV -radio techni-cians looking for additional sourcesof income. Most technicians are al-ready familiar with TV remote con-trols which are similar to those usedfor electronically controlled dooropeners. The electro-mechanical"operators" used with these devicesare relatively easy to handle.

The repair of garage door open-ers is usually left to the equipmentdistributor. The retailer is generallynot prepared to service them, andtime is wasted when they are re-turned to the factory. Repairs arealso unnecessarily expensive whenboth the transmitter and receiverare sent to the factory. "Pre -paired," matched frequency unitsmake substitution out of the ques-tion for the do-it-yourselfer.

Remote controlled door openersare no longer a "rich boy's toy."They are not only practical but arebeing installed more widely in one -car garages.

Control Types

Several control types are now be-ing marketed. Most manufacturershave settled on r -f signal transmit-ters located in the car. Additionalcontrolling points near the door orinside the house are usually wireddirectly to the operator control re-lay. Types now being produced in -

dude transistorized transmitters andreceivers. The transmitters may besmall hand held types, like thoseused in TV remote controls, orlarger under -the -hood types operat-ed from the car battery. Thesemodels are push button controlledfrom the car's instrument panel.

Most technicians are acquaintedwith remote devices which are ac-tivated by light and sound. Theseunits, operating from the car's hornor lights, inadvertently may be"touched off' by passing traffic.Light operated controls are fre-quently difficult to adjust with suf-ficient range to prevent accidentaloperation by sunlight. Both soundand light operated types, however,may be coded for optimum reliabil-ity. Three blinks of the headlightsor three horn toots, can be em-ployed, for example.

At least one manufacturer mar-kets a control which operates onvery low frequency (VLF). Theunit is transistor powered and avail-able preset to one of 25 differentfrequencies from about 7000 to10,000 cps.

If you plan to sell door openersall of these types should be con-sidered. Each has its advantagesand disadvantages. Some have shortcontrol distances, others require li-censes for operation. Most licenserequirements are for Citizens' Bandfrequencies, however, and require

only that the user make applica-tion for a permit. The technicianmust have at least a 2nd class li-cense, however, to fully service CBtransmitters.

Mechanical Considerations

The type of unit or the manu-facturer may be determined by theconstruction of the door or garagewhere the control will be installed.Overhead clearance is the most im-portant item. Units presently on themarket require anywhere from 11/2in. to several inches of clearancebetween the door and the neareststructure above the door as it isopened.

The balance of the door shouldbe as good as possible to preventunnecessary wear to the "operator."Most operators are able to lift heavydoors without any problem. Chang-ing seasons can also present a prob-lem, especially on spring loadedtype doors. During the cold season,pressure applied to the systemthrough spring contraction cancause erratic operation because ofpressure applied to the limit switch-es.

Specific installation problems areusually well covered in instructionssupplied with the system.

erated from a hand-held transmit-ter or built into the car and op-erated from its electrical system,the principle of operation is ba-sically the same.

In order to avoid "phantom op-eration" many of the systems usea modulated carrier. A modulationdetector in the receiver then rejectsany signal without the proper mod-ulating frequency. Also, in thismanner only a few modulating fre-quencies plus a few carrier frequen-cies result in a large number ofusable non-interferring signals. Thismodulation is impressed on the sig-nals in several different ways.

One method uses a relay weight-ed and balanced so it closes at aspecific frequency. The relay shunts

a large capacitor across the r -f out-put thus modulating the output sig-nal. The modulating frequenciesused in these relays is from 15 to 25cps.

The receiver uses the same typerelay for the demodulator. The re-lay coil is tied in series with anamplifier tube cathode. If the in-coming r -f is properly modulated,the relay operates and energizes thedoor opening relay. This relay isoften hooked to a larger power re-lay which operates the motor.

Though transistors have beenused in a large number oftransmitters, the tube is still popu-lar in receivers. Probably becausesize and portability are not neces-sary in a receiver and the economy

Alignment

Depending on the equipment,alignment can be very simple or ascomplex as peaking a superhet ra-dio. For example, one manufactur-er's transmitter tuning recommenda-tions are shown in Fig. 1. Thetransmitter is crystal controlled andonly needs to be peaked for maxi-mum output.

Peaking trimmers are located inthe antenna circuits of both thetransmitter and the receiver. Be-cause of variations in different in-stallations, the antenna will notnecessarily be tuned to maximum

Usecaution in operating most transmit-ters for more than a few seconds.They are designed to operate onlyfor a very short time with sufficienttime to cool off between operation.

If the trimmer adjustment seemsto be too wide in response, backthe transmitter away from the re-ceiver till it becomes sharp. Maxi-mum operating distance can also bedetermined in this way.

Manufacturer's instructions usu-ally give alignment data and fre-quently tell how to align the systemwith only the transmitter as a fre-quency source.

MaintenanceDetecting the transmitted signal

to find out which unit is in opera-tion is usually the first step in trou-bleshooting a remote system. Thiscan be accomplished with a detectedmeter circuit as shown in Fig. 1

If the transmitter has failed voltageand resistance checks should helpyou find the trouble rapidly. Onlya few components are used in mosttransmitters so all components canbe checks in a short time if neces-sary.

It is possible to get an indica-tion that the transmitter is operat-ing using this method, however,even if the modulator is inoperative.This is most easily detected at somepoint before the demodulator in thereceiver using a scope to view thewaveform. A very high gain scopeis needed for this check. Dependingon the modulating frequency, ear-phones may be substituted for themeter for a "go -no-go" check onthe modulator.

Since the transmitter should notbe operated for long periods oftime, a signal generator should beused to check the receiver. A metercan be connected to the relay coilon the output stage and signals canbe injected at each stage, movingfrom the last stage to the first. Whenthe meter fails to indicate the sig-nal, the dead or weak stage hasbeen found. Larger signals are need-ed near the output stage than at theinput stage, of course.

A 41/2 -in. diameter camera tubeis the eye of an experimental RCAcamera, model TK 42X, which pro-duces color television pictures hav-ing richer hues and finer detail thanpreviously attained with studio cam-eras.

In the new camera, the imageorthicon picks up the black -and -white signal, while three one -inchdiameter vidicon's are used for thered, blue and green picture infor-mation.

The imposition of a clean preciseblack -and -white signal from the oneimage orthicon tube on to the threeprimary color signals, a techniquesimilar to that used in four-colorprinting, enriches picture hues andprovides sharper definition. Thiscomposite signal also provides su-

perior black -and -white pictures onB/W TV sets during color telecasts.

The color camera was construct-ed by the RCA Broadcast and Com-munications Products Div. as theforerunner of equipment for futureTV stations. It was demonstratedat the National Association ofBroadcasters convention in Chi-cago.

Present color cameras employthree camera tubes, one each forthe red, blue and green channelsthat are combined to form the colorinformation as well as the "mono-chrome" black -and -white picture in-formation. The experimental colorcamera utilizes the fourth pickuptube to provide a separate cleanand sharp monochrome picture sig-nal. The tube contributes to the

camera's improved picture resolu-tion, signal-to-noise ratio and grayscale rendition.

This same image orthicon is cur-rently employed in high -qualityblack -and -white TV cameras. Itsexcellent capability over varied lightconditions makes it well suited foroutdoor or studio pickup.

The three 1 -in. diameter vidiconshandle the color picture informationin the new camera. These cameratubes have electrostatic focus andelectrostatic deflection. Becausethese tubes are very small and re-quire no deflection coils, the newcamera which uses four cameratubes is smaller than present cam-eras using only three pickup tubes.Present day color sets will receivecolor with no modifications.

Difficult Service Jobs Described by Readers

We had an RCA CTC11 Colorchassis come in for repair. Intermit-tently the agc control smoked assoon as the receiver warmed up.The chassis was removed from thecabinet and not only was the agccontrol, R-133 burned but resistorR-146 was damaged. An ohmmeterwas placed from the 6BK4'S heat-er to ground and there was noshort. The next time the a -c cordwas plugged in, it took about 10minutes before the control startedto smoke. The circuit again waschecked and no short could befound. The shunt regulator tube waschecked in a good tube tester, butshowed no short. On a hunch theshunt regulator tube was replacedand the chassis "fired up" again.No smoking, everything was fine,so the agc control and R-146 werereplaced. The chassis has beenworking okay since. The 6BK4 tubewas, no doubt, leaking between theheater and cathode when the tubewarmed up, placing excessive volt-age across the agc control and R -146.-H. L. Davidson, Ft. Dodge,Iowa.

Short Burns OutThree Tubes

Some months ago a call wasmade to a customer's home to re-pair a Crosley 431-1 TV. The pic-ture tube was defective and a newone was installed. After all adjust-ments were made the chassis wasinstalled in the cabinet. The setthen developed a hum, and the pic-ture and sound both disappeared.The first three tubes in the seriesstring had burned out. The 12L6had a cathode -to -heater short, so itwas assumed that this was the causeof the trouble, as no other shortcould be found. A cathode -to -heat-er short would bypass all the othertubes but the three mentionedwould have several times normalvoltage across the heaters. Threenew tubes were installed and theset was turned on. It worked fine.One month later the customer calledand said that the set had gone dead.A trip was made to the house andthe three tubes were again foundburned out. The 12L6 had a cath-ode short and so did the 12DQ6and the 12AX4!

termittent grid capacitor in the12L6 circuit was shorting, over-heating the tube and starting thetriple tube burnout. The capacitorwas replaced, and resistor values inthe grid circuit were checked andfound normal. The series filamentresistor value was checked andfound to be low, so a 1512, 15 wresistor was temporarily wired inthe circuit. The 12L6 potential wasnow 12.45 v.

After checking for a leak or shortfrom the 12L6 cathode and heatercircuits, none was even found whilejarring the chassis. A set of threetubes was installed and the set

turned on. It worked fine again andafter waiting around for half anhour, I left with a prayer on my lips.

Conar Oscilloscope Model 250at $139.50 Wired, $89.50, Kit -The model 250 is an adequate in-strument, with some of the featuresfound in much higher priced equip-ment.

The scope has a vertical frequen-cy response which can handle colorservice work, being only 1.5 db downat 3.58 mc. The horizontal sweepis extended to 500 kc so the burstfrequency is actually visible. An in-teresting modification is suggestedto allow the scope to accuratelycheck for faulty yokes, flybacks orlinearity coils. A pulse from thehorizontal circuitry is fed to the"Z" axis input jack and externallyconnected to the vertical input jack.A coil connected across the verti-cal input then is pulsed so that itsringing frequency is displayed onthe scope. Shorted turn faults areeasily found in this manner.

The scope has a 5 -in. screenwhich is powered by 2400 v. Suf-ficient amplification is used, how-ever, to give the scope a verticalsensitivity of 0.23 v/in. The traceremains clearly visible under goodbench lighting conditions at thehighest sweep frequencies. Directp -p readings of complex waveformsare obtained with calibrated con-trols.

A brushed aluminum panel withblack lettering is used for excellentlegibility of the scope panel. A goodinstruction manual is included withthe scope giving instructions on useof the scope for general and TVservice work. A set of four probesdesigned for the scope are alsoavailable in a convenient roll -uppouch at additional cost.

The oscilloscope is built by Co-nar Instruments Div. of the NationalRadio Institute.

OHM-MILLIAMMETER

RCA Volt -Ohm -Milliammeter,Model WV -38A, at $43.95 Wired,$29.95, Kit - The VOM is prob-ably one of the most -used instru-ments in the radio -TV shop. Thisinstrument should be rugged, easyto read, and accurate. The RCAWV -38A qualifies on all counts.The unit tested was well within the±3 percent tolerance specified bythe manufacturer for the d -c scalesand within the 5 percent specifiedfor the a -c scales.

Eight d -c ranges and seven a -cranges are incorporated in the me-ter with 20,000Q/v d -c and 50000/v a -c input resistance. There are

also six d -c current ranges whichhave a 0.25 v insertion loss. Thescale is calibrated in db (-20 to+10) which is invaluable to any-one working with audio. A singlefunction switch selects a -c or d -coperation as well as the polarity ford -c operation. This eliminateschanging both leads when measur-ing different voltages in a chassis.Both d -c and a -c meter functionsare calibrated for 5000 v.

A 51/4 -in. "extended view" meter,mounted in clear plastic case, allowsgood visibility and avoids lightingproblems. A vinyl case and HVprobe are also available.

On July 29, 1955, he escapedfrom the London Prison Farm, Lon-don, Ohio, where he was serving a10 to 25 year sentence for armedrobbery. On September 20, 1955,a Federal warrant was issued forhis apprehension because of his es-cape. Since he was carrying a load-ed .45 caliber automatic at thetime he was arrested for armedrobbery, he should be consideredarmed and dangerous.

Terrentine is a Negro Americanand was born on June 16, 1923, atCleveland, Ohio. He has also in-dicated his date and place of birthas June 16, 1921, Cleveland, Ohio.He is 5'81/2" tall, weighs approxi-mately 170 pounds, has black andkinky hair, brown eyes, a mediumbuild and brown complexion. Hehas scars on his right thigh, left sideof upper lip, center of back andback of right shoulder. He also has abump on his right shoulder and twodog bite scars on his right leg, andmight possibly wear glasses.

FloridaTSDA, St. Petersburg, is preparing

for a half hour program "Good TVService Costs Money," in cooperationwith WSUN-TV. This is an initial jointpublic relations effort in the locality.

IndianaFESA, Fort Wayne, reports their res-

ignation from NATESA. In a letter toexecutive director Frank Moch, FESAsaid " . . . we feel the only solutionto the discord in NATESA is for FrankMoch to resign as executive director ofNATESA. . . . There is only one al-ternative for FESA. That is to resign."

IESA, Elkhart, has also severed itsaffiliation with NATESA. Reasons givenfor the resignation was a general dis-satisfaction with the manner in whichNATESA is being operated and the lackof worthwhile accomplishments on a na-tional basis.

IESA, Indianapolis, reports that largecable TV companies are fighting forthe right to install cable TV systems innorthern Indiana. IESA says the systemsare not needed in this area and thatry antenna installers and technicianswill be driven out of business. Althoughthe cable companies say they do noservice work, interviews with customersand technicians in Illinois, where thesystem has been in effect for about aear, indicate this is contrary to the

facts.

ful color course for local technicians.\ large turnout of both members andnon-members was reported. The clinicwas held for the purpose of laying thefoundation for more advanced futureclinics on color servicing.

Sylvania Electric Products Inc., an-nounces it is resuming production ofcolor television picture tubes. The com-pany previously produced and marketedcolor tubes from 1953 through 1957. Ac-cording to a company spokesman, a 21in., 90 degree, shadow mask, round glasstube will be available in 1963. Thetubes will be manufactured at SenecaFalls, N. Y., headquarters of Sylvania'sPicture Tube Operations.

An extremely strong agc voltagewhich does not change when tuningthrough local station frequencies,may be produced by an i-f stagewhich is oscillating. Bridging a goodcapacitor across "A" line electro-lytics and bypass capacitors in thei-f stages will usually locate thereason for the oscillation.

Other Considerations

If distortion is present on all sta-tions, voltages should be checked inthe audio stages. If all of these volt-ages are near normal, it is possiblethat the transistor gains are notmatched in the push-pull outpti.stage. The variation in gain will of-ten not cause a voltage irregularity,but can produce distortion. But

Two blank holes have beenleft in the panel for future modifica-tions. Chrome plug buttons are in-stalled in the holes.

Good circuit design has been em-ployed throughout the instrument.A 5000 cps voltage is applied tothe grid for dynamic tests in orderto approach actual equipment op-erating conditions. In an attempt tokeep the tester's roll chart at mini-mum length, infrequently used tubesare listed in a separate booklet. Inthis manner, tubes which are testedmore often can be found quickly.
