Moved to Hannibal, Missouri at age 4.
Based both of two most famous novels in Hannibal.
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876)
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884)
LOCATION
Hannibal is a city in Missouri.
Located in the counties of Marion and Ralls.
At the intersection of Interstate 72 and U.S. Routes 24, 36 and 61.
GEOGRAPHY
located at 39°42′15″N 91°22′39″W
total area of 16.21 square miles
15.74 square miles of land
0.47 square miles of water
HISTORY
Once was occupied by early Native tribes.
Mound Builders were first occupants.
Mounds can still be seen today.
Sac and Fox Indians were last to inhabit.

First explorers on record of future site of Hannibal, were Father Marquette and Louis Joliet in 1673.
In the 1790's, salt was discovered in the vicinity.
Was of great value to St. Louis and other large settlements.
As salt became available elsewhere and Indian uprisings increased, the number of settlers decreased.

Got its name from Hannibal Creek.
Presently known as Bear Creek.
Hannibal was the name of a historic Carthaginian general.
Founded in 1819 by Moses Bates

In 1830, the population was only 30.
Hannibal became chartered as a city in 1845.
City soon grew to 2020 by 1850.

pork packing soap and candle making coopering milling of lumber milling of grain rope making

Known for its rich railroad history.
First railroad to cross the state of Missouri was completed in 1859.
First locomotive manufactured west of the Mississippi was made in Hannibal
34 ton engine called the General Grant.

First official water system began in 1879.
In 1902 the first public library was
founded.
