Electronic Portfolios as a
Summative Assessment
Team Purple – Todd Taylor
Summative Assessment
• Summative assessments are typically used to evaluate the effectiveness of instructional programs and services at the end of an academic year or at a pre-determined time. The goal of summative assessments is to make a judgment of student competency after an instructional phase is complete. Summative evaluations are used to determine if students have mastered specific competencies and to identify instructional areas that need additional attention.

What is an Electronic Portfolio
An electronic portfolio, also known as an e-portfolio or digital portfolio, is a collection of electronic evidence assembled and managed by a user, usually on the Web. Such electronic evidence may include inputted text, electronic files, images, multimedia, blog entries, and hyperlinks. E-portfolios are both demonstrations of the user's abilities and platforms for self-expression, and, if they are online, they can be maintained dynamically over time. Some e-portfolio applications permit varying degrees of audience access, so the same portfolio might be used for multiple purposes.from http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Electronic_portfolio&oldid=451507257

Data produced by E- Portfolio
• Student self-evaluation, reflection, and critical thinking. • Performance based on genuine samples of student work. • Flexibility in measuring how students accomplish their
learning goals. • Responsibility for setting learning goals and for evaluating
progress toward meeting those goals. • Opportunity to have extensive input into the learning
process. • Cooperative learning activities, including peer evaluation and
tutoring, cooperative learning groups, and peer conferencing. • Structuring learning in stages. • Measurement of multiple dimensions of student progress by
including different types of data and materials. (Barrett 2006)
Influence on Instruction
• Because of the nature and the developmental steps of the E-Portfolio it provides a natural process of developing meaningful instruction to the student as well as the teacher. The teacher acts as a facilitator in the assessment process and the instruction is student directed. The individualization involved the portfolio development provides for differentiated instruction.
