A survey was sent via e-blast on Monday, January 12, 2015 as part of the FIPOA Board’s Strategic Plan. We need to better understand the needs of Fripp Island property owners in regards to our island’s amenities. Recent discussions on the island have underscored the importance of having input from all property owners. The analysis resulting from this survey will be used to help the POA understand your priorities.

Officer Dunphy Awarded Security Officer of the Yearn December 11th, at the meeting of the Security Directors of South Carolina, Officer Jonathan Dunphy was awarded Security Officer of

the Year by Chief Jim Griener. The award is based on leadership qualities in the performance of his/her duties throughout the year, and the officer has shown a genuine commitment to their profession, agency, and the public which they serve. Officers are nominated by their Chief, and a committee made up of a Security Chief, a Command Officer from the Sheriff’s Department, and one other member of the Association, reviews the nominations and selects the recipient.

O

Officer Dunphy discovered a fire at a property in Fairway Club in April and prevented the incident from turning into a tragic situation. If you see him, say congratulations!

Letter to the Editor

November 24, 2014

On Halloween Eve, I fractured my femur while preparing to surf fish for the 4th time in a week on Capers Island. The area is remote and not easy to locate or access. Fortunately, I was not alone and two of us were able to reach 911 on our mobile phones. The emergency operators were very helpful in contacting the appropriate agencies to locate us and arrange for transportation to a trauma facility. The rescue involved members of the Fripp Island Fire Department, Fripp Island Sea Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard. Because transport by boat would have been nearly impossible, the Coast Guard helicopter was able to land on a small area of nearby beach and flew me to Memorial Hospital in Savannah.

I have a clear memory of all aspects of this event and want to commend all those involved for their professionalism and expertise as well as attention to my comfort during what was a very painful experience. Coastal South Carolina is a beautiful area, but the potential for land and sea emergencies is always prevalent. We are fortunate that Fripp Island has access to well trained, experienced people to respond to such accidents and the ability to bring in the Coast Guard when necessary. Needless to say, I am very grateful that their response allowed me to get home to Maryland where I am currently recuperating.

he general membership meeting held on November 19th was well attended. Jan Manning introduced our guest speakers, Marge Jarvis,

Chairperson of the Adopt-A-School program at St. Helena Elementary, and Alison Barton, Volunteer Coordinator. The aim of the program is to instill a love of learning and provide an opportunity for volunteers to work with students in small groups or individual tutoring.

T

On December 1st, volunteers met near the flagpole to help Jill Anderson, our Beautification Chair, with lighting and decorations for the Fripp Island Christmas Tree. This year’s theme was “Flip-Flops.” The designers used flip-flops of all sizes that were discarded along the beach. The flip-flops, painted and decorated with sparkling beads, covered the tree that was topped with a beautiful white star.

Volunteers also gathered over several weeks to work with Sandra Stuart and Jan to prepare decorations for the Friends of Caroline Hospice Christmas Tree that was auctioned off at the Shed in Port Royal. What a surprise when we learned that the tree was purchased by a Fripp resident and had it proudly displayed in her front yard.

Our last meeting for the year was held on December 17th with a festive luncheon at the Beach Club. Entertainment for the afternoon was provided by the Sweetgrass Angels, a trio of talented women singing in three-part harmony. Songs of the season echoed throughout the room as we enjoyed their wonderful voices. In addition to entertainment, our Christmas Luncheon is also the time for our annual book drive for the Born-to-Read organization. We thank our members for their donation of 81 new books that Beaufort Memorial Hospital will give to new mothers as part of their birthing program aimed at instilling the importance of early reading to children.

Mark your calendar for our next meeting on January 21, 2015 featuring “Laughing Yoga,” and also on Friday, February 6th for our very popular Bingo, Brews and Barbeque event at the Community Centre. Also, watch for flyers about future programs and visit us at our website: www.frippwc.com.

ovember and December featured a variety of weather conditions including warm weather, cold weather, fog,

and even a frost delay. With Christmas Eve and the day before Thanksgiving falling on Wednesdays, there were no matches those two days. However, a strong showing of seventeen hardy souls played on New Year’s Eve in less than ideal conditions.

N

In mid-November, the Nine-Holers revived the 'Beat the Pros' event; but only five teams out of eighteen actually did beat the pros. A good time was had, and we hope to schedule a return match with the pros next year.

Games during this time period included stableford, two low net, team stableford, three low net and four low net, among others.

Weekly winners included Gary Bond, John Dunphy, Buck Mathews, Joe Sullivan, Jim Click, Perminder Bindra, Rusty Prophater, Dave Moore, Mike Virostek, Duffy Howard, Walter Dany, Ralph Burchfield, Steve Schnobrich, Frank Golden, and Ron Pointek.

In January, the group will play at Ocean Creek, and in February, at Ocean Point beginning at 9:00 a.m.There are currently approximately 80 active members in

FRIPP ISLAND EARNS NATIONAL RECERTIFICATION AS COMMUNITY WILDLIFE HABITAT!

ripp Island was recertified as a Community Wildlife Habitat by the prestigious National Wildlife Federation (NWF), in time to celebrate with the New Year. This recognition is due to the “Naturally Fripp Community Wildlife Habitat

Team”—local volunteers intent on spreading the barrier island’s reputation as a premier destination for nature lovers. FThe team began recording Fripp’s extensive wildlife projects and programs in 2012, submitted an application to the NWF in

the form of a fat notebook filled with documentation that was impressive for its substance—and sheer weight! The NWF awarded Fripp Island its certified status during 2013. To maintain its certification, Fripp must continue to meet conservation goals set each year. Of course, with its profusion of nature protection programs, Fripp is a “curve-buster”!

Fripp’s national certification puts the island in the best of company. The South Carolina communities of Kiawah, Callawassie and Briarcliff Acres are the only others the NWF has certified in the state and there are just 75 NWF-certified communities in the entire US! The Naturally Fripp team has already begun “keeping book” on Fripp’s wildlife conservation accomplishments for the next annual review.

Fripp’s endorsement by the NWF is not a transitory, public-relations “attaboy.” The highly-regarded nature conservation group is America’s largest organization of its kind, with over 150,000 members. While “Fripp” may never be a household word, certification has introduced the island to many who’ve never heard of it before and the national honor fosters a positive view of coastal South Carolina that will have a favorable impact on the Lowcountry’s rich, diverse natural habitat, its wildlife and residents.

Kids' Fishing Tournament Nets 100 Kids

Captain Ralph Goodisonhe 17th Annual Thanksgiving Kids' Fishing Tournament was held on Friday, November 23rd at Fripp Island Marina. Over one hundred kids

from ages 4 to 15 came out to participate on a very cold day. The boys and girls still had a good time while braving the cold weather. All the children who participated in the tournament won either a rod and reel or a trophy. They all enjoyed great food while donning their tournament hats.

T

Lewis Turner, Marina Director, thanked the many people from the Yacht Club who helped with the tournament. The Fripp Island Yacht Club and Fripp Island Resort were also thanked for their financial support. U. S. Food Service and J & R Ice Cream donated food for the event.

It may have been a very cold Black Friday, but both parents and kids had a great time at the tournament.

inter fishing has slowed, but if the weather allows, get out and enjoy

some of the best fishing on the coast. We are all hoping for a warmer winter than last year.

WThe shrimp baiting and hard shell blue

crab seasons for 2014 were disappointments. Overall fishing on Fripp Island had a slow start due to a cold spring, but generally this year’s fishing was good.

Redfish, Trout, Whiting, Sheepshead and Black Drum will provide for a fair inshore fishing experience. Offshore: Blackbass, Trigger and Grunt will also be fair.In early spring, the stream will start to show Wahoo, Dolphin and Billfish as they make their way moving to the north. If you don’t have a boat, you can rent one

at the Marina. Bundle up and try some winter fishing, shelling on Bull Point, or get some delicious local oysters.
