KJH Interdisciplinary Day

On Tuesday, November 26, 2013, the entire 7th grade participated in an Interdisci-

plinary Day. The day was specifically centered on the Greek culture, as well as the

novel, The Adventures of Ulysses. Each teacher had a station where they rotated

four groups of students through during the morning hours. The stations were filled with fun, hands-on activities that

showed the various Greek connections throughout different subject levels. After the stations concluded, all 3 teams

met in the cafeteria for a Festival of sorts. The festival had yummy

treats like Baklava, hummus and chips, pomegranate seeds, green

olives and much more! The final activity of the day took place in the

gymnasium (aka the Coliseum). Students were encouraged to partici-

pate in Greek games like leg wrestling and throwing the javelin and

discus. All teachers and students had a blast and we can’t wait to do it

again next year!

ESL Students Studying Seeds at KME

The 3rd and 4th grade students in Rhonda Allen-Harman’s

English as a Second Language class at KME recently com-

pleted a lesson about seeds. They read a story about John-

ny Appleseed, read poems about pumpkin seeds, wrote a

short story entitled "Once I swallowed a Pumpkin Seed,"

and read an article about what seeds need to grow. Then

students planted their own pumpkin seeds and beans.

They observed their plants over the course of a month and

wrote their observations in a journal. The lesson culminat-

ed with students following a recipe to make a pumpkin

dessert that they plan to make again one day when their

own pumpkins plants are ready to harvest.

CIS 5th Graders Attend Project TRUST

Project TRUST is a nationally recognized program designed to assist middle

level students in building positive peer relationships, effective communica-

tion, recognizing commonalities/similarities among people, understanding

differences, developing leadership skills, and identifying conflict resolution

strategies through group work and team building activities. Seventy fifth

grade students were selected to spend a day at Camp Kern to participate in

a variety of group initiatives and dis-

cussions led by experienced Project TRUST staff. Columbia Intermediate Assis-

tant Principal Lori Stovall said, “We know the jump from the three elementary

buildings to Columbia Intermediate can be challenging for adolescents. With

this in mind, our goal is to ease that transition by giving students tools to build

communication skills and break down barriers. We would like to challenge these

students to ‘Be Nice Out There,’ to bring back their ideas and new skills in an

effort to teach others so that we may continue building on the positive school

climate we foster here in Kings.”
