Helping Teachers Make a World of Difference

“When the IMSA Excellence 2000+ program team was asked to present their CSI unit tonearly 100 colleagues in New York, we turned to Science Kit to help us furnish and pre-pare the kits necessary to present the unit. We sent our detailed list of requirements toour Science Kit representative and he located and obtained all the neces-sary materials, filled and organized the boxes to our specifications, andshipped the completed kits to the participating schools. It was a greattime saver for our team, and we were assured that the kits had exactlythe equipment and supplies that would be required for our profes-sional development session. Thanks Science Kit!”

Electrical CircuitsEverything you need to investigate simple, series, and parallel circuits as well and Ohm’s law and resistivity are allincluded in this part of the FUNdamentals of Physics series. Instead of the mess of wires usually blocking the study ofelectrical circuits in traditional setups, this circuit board has 12 steel posts that are designed to accept four types of com-mon circuit components: push button switch, light bulb, variable resistor, and connecting bar. Three built-in batteryholders allow circuits to be connected to a 1.5, 3.0 or 4.5 V battery. Kit includes 10 connecting bars, six light bulb bars, two push button switches, a variable resistor, three coils of various sized wire, graphite rods, steel wool, connecting wires, and an activity guide. Batteries are required, but not included. Size: 33 cm X 33 cm X 4 cm; weight: 5 lbs.

1804 M 53

Rotational MotionSimple and fun to operate, this student-friendly apparatus consists of a 40cm wide disc, driven underneath by a motor-ized wheel. The disc’s moveable pegs can be positioned a specific distance from the center, and a support rod allows aphotogate to be positioned, reading the frequency of the pegs when placed at different positions on the spinning disc. When the frequency of the pegs are measured at different positions, but at a constant rotation, students will find theangular velocity to be consistent, while the linear velocities are very different. The drive motor can also be adjusted, so itcan be positioned either near the center of the disk, causing a faster rotation; or near the edge, causing a slower rota-tion. Activity guide is included. Requires the Photogate System, available separately.

1804 M 54

Constant Motion CarUsing a strip of tape and this dynamic FUN car, your students will clearly visualize some key physical science concepts. As the car rolls over a strip of tape, it pushes a marker down in regular timed intervals — this creates a pattern of dotsthat vary based on the speed of the car. If the car is freely rolling down an incline, the dots will gradually have a largerdistance between them, illustrating to the students the idea of acceleration. If you switch on the motor to one of the fourpreset speeds, students are given a stunning demonstration of constant velocity, because no matter what constant speedit was traveling at, the dots are always equally spaced. The car’s wheels can also be switched to be freely rolling or drivenby four different constants speeds. Requires, but does not include, four AA batteries, a marker, and adding machine tape.

1804 M 66

Force TableEconomical and convenient, this force table delivers the accuracy of a full unit, but can be stored in half the space. Thetable’s support rod is designed to attach to the Fun Stand base, which makes the line modular and very easy to set up

and use. Table is marked with degrees and features three hanging stainless steel masses and instructions. Requiresthe Fun Stand, available separately.

Optics TrackOffer your students a hands-on experience with geometric optics, demon-strating polarization, color mixing, and more. The unique design of thisdevice uses supports that attach to the Fun Stand as a horizontal bar andcreate a student-friendly optical bench for many experiments. Includesfour color filters; two polarizing lenses; support brackets; light source;support stand; and two each of concave, convex lenses, and mirrors; allsecurely organized in a sturdy storage container. Instructions for allactivities are also supplied. Requires, the Fun Stand, available separately.

1804 M 49

Reflection and RefractionUsing a plane mirror in addition to a concave and convex mirror with different focallengths, students encounter reflection through a series of hands-on activities. Students alsoinvestigate refraction of concave and convex lenses, a lucite block, and glass block. Theincluded prism is utilized to demonstrate separation of light into its component colors.

1804 M 50

Pile Driver/Resonance TubeUniquely constructed to act as a resonance tube or pile driver, this simple device is comprised of an 80cm acrylic tube with a mounted metricscale on its side. Place a container of play dough beneath the tube to demonstrate conservation of energy. When a mass is dropped from the top ofthe tube it drives a nail into container of play-dough at the bottom. Dropping the mass from different heights pushes the nail in varying depths.Since the tube is clear, the FUNdamentals of Physics photogates can also be used to accurately measure the time of the mass through the tube atdifferent heights. Since the velocity at the top of the tube is zero, students can then use the idea of conservation of energy to determine the kineticenergy at the bottom of the tube and the amount of work done on the nail. When the nail holder and play dough are removed from the appara-tus, it can be used as a resonance tube. Striking a tuning fork near the bottom of the tube and slowly lifting on the masses inside the tube willyield positions where the tone is louder. Students can use this to investigate the wavelength of different tuning forks and to approximate the speedof sound. Kit includes two different sized dropping masses, 80 cm long tube, mounting hardware, nail holder, two nails of different sizes, threetuning forks, a container of play dough, and activity guide. Requires the Fun Stand and Photogate System, available separately.

1804 M 52

Springs Three short springs with common spring constants allow students to investigate both series and par-allel springs. For an even larger demonstration, five long springs — three with common spring con-stants and two with higher and lower spring constants — help students explore the differences insprings of common length. An attached meter, scale, and pointer make recording data easy and fun.Kit includes eight springs, triple spring holder, meter stick, pointer, multiple spring bracket, andinstructions with activities. Requires the Fun Stand and hooked masses, available separately.

Modeling and Investigating Watersheds Lab ActivityProvide students with hands-on experience on watersheds and aknowledge base for real-life applications of the water cycle. Theexclusive watershed models included with this kit are used toexplore the dynamics of watersheds. Students apply “rain” overa topographic model and observe the water runoff. From theirobservations, they identify the location of major bodies of watersuch as lakes, rivers, and streams. Using appropriate tools toanalyze and interpret data, students learn how water falls to thesurface where it collects in rivers, lakes, and oceans. This experi-

ence is then applied to a discussion of current issues, such as how an abandoned mine may influence

water quality far from the mine site or how farm-ing practices in Nebraska may influence thehealth of organisms in the Gulf of Mexico.

Barometer TutorDeliver precise and accurate readings of atmosphericpressure with this device as well as manipulate airpressure to simulate changes in atmospheric pres-sure. The squeeze bulb and hose allow you tomanipulate the air pressure within the device, soyou can directly observe how a barometer respondsto and measures this air pressure. Then you can usethese measurements to make powerful predictions aboutthe weather in your area. This barometer operates without liquid, but uses a thinmetal diaphragm mechanism to measure the effect of atmospheric pressure. Theunit is circular, constructed of two identical convoluted diaphragms sealed at theiredges. When this capsule is completely evacuated of air, it will respond to pressurechanges in the atmosphere. Such changes proportionally affect the changes in thethickness of the capsule, which are magnified through levers, finally causing a nee-dle to rotate over a circular scale divided into equivalent inches of mercury and mil-libars. This action observed on the Barometer Tutor gives students full understandingof barometric pressure. Size: 20 cm dia.1805 M 98

Polymer Bead ChainModel DemonstrationHow is a polymer chain able to self-siphon out of ajar or container? What forces have to be present?Answer these questions and more with this crazy andsometimes uncontrollable demonstration that illus-trates the unique ability for polymers and other sol-vents to siphon out of a container. As the polymerbead picks up speed and is jumping out of the con-tainer, try to contain it into another container so thedemonstration can be repeated. It is not as easy as itseems. Just like siphoning a liquid or polymer solu-tion, once it starts, it has a mind of its own. Thedemonstration can be reused hundreds of times oruntil it is worn out from use!

Updated and Improved ScholAR Chemistry Teacher Demonstrations Our Product Development experts re-examined all ScholAR Teacher demonstrations, re-tested each in the lab, and enhanced all demos with improvements to replace hazardous chemicals for less hazardous or “green” chemicals, simplify the procedure, and re-write the included instructions.

Each Demo’s Instructions, now includes:• Expanded background sections• Concepts Taught and Correlation to National Standards• More in-depth demonstration preparation, teacher notes, and procedure tips.• Addressing Misconception and Misunderstandings section• Extension IdeasAnd most importantly, • Demonstration Student Worksheet with answer sheets.

The ScholAR demonstration kits are now the only chemical demonstration kits on the market with a Student Worksheet that converts a demonstration from a static observation activity into an interactive learning laboratory activity incorporating the 5 ELearning Cycle. The 5 E Learning Cycle for a chemical demonstration includes:1. Engagement of the students and peaking their interest with the actual demonstration.2. Exploration of the concept by having students make and record observations made during the demonstration on the worksheet.3. Explaining the demonstration by answering questions about what is occurring during the demonstration and writing out reaction

mechanisms and equations on the worksheet.4. Expanding the concept and demonstration by asking students open-ended questions about other applications or how this reaction

provides insight for other reactions.5. Evaluation now becomes easier since the teacher can collect and grade the worksheets for comprehension.

Look for more ScholAR Chemistry Demonstrations coming out soon!

Multicolored Milk ofMagnesia Demonstration Activity KitA simple household remedy for upset stomachs nowillustrates key concepts in acid/base chemistry, neutral-ization reactions, and kinetics. When a strong acid isadded to a suspension of magnesium hydroxide anduniversal indicator, a series of reactions begin. In thesereactions, the dissolved base is quickly neutralized andthe solubility process is slow enough to allow an acidicsolution to exist until the acid is fully neutralized andthe basic suspension re-established. A rapid change ofcolors from the universal indicator is observed as thesolution changes pH. By changing the temperature ofthe solution using ice, the reaction is slowed down toobserve which step is temperature related. An excellentintroduction to acids and bases or the kinetics chapter, this kit includes materials for 10 demonstrations.

ScholAR Inquiry In the Bag Demonstrations and ActivitiesEngaging, convenient, and safe — Scholar Inquiry in the Bag activities are a new concept in hands-on chemistry through guided inquiry. Everything you need to completethe demonstration is provided and the entire experiment is performed in a heavy-duty plastic, zipper-lock bag so your students can feel and study the reaction closely, but safely. After observing the demonstration, students are motivated to continue explorations of the concepts observed. Explain the science and then let students expand and further theirunderstanding by asking questions and proposing predictions and hypothesis. Their questions and hypothesis determine the direction of the lesson — ask students how youmight test the parameters they suggest. Increase the students’ understanding by repeating the demonstration using their recommendations. Each kit contains enough materi-al to repeat the demonstration about 20 times.

ScholAR Tube ChemistryDemonstrationsRenowned teacher developer, Tim Graham, has partnered with Scholar Chemistry tobring you an exciting new series of colorful demonstrations. Each innovative demois conducted in a large 30" demonstration tube, so the entire class can clearly see thechemistry in action. Each Scholar Chemistry Tube Demonstration contains enoughmaterials for five demonstrations. The glass demonstration tube is sold separately.

Thermochemistry In TheBag Inquiry Demonstration ActivitiesFeel the heat and study energy changes in chemicalreactions through hands-on sensation of the actual tem-perature changes. A powerful introduction to the con-cept of thermochemistry, this demonstration, safely con-tained within a plastic ziplock bag, will generate student questions and experimentideas. Will they want to collect temperature data, or change the ratios of the startingmaterials, or both? You and your students control the demonstration parameters. Thecomplete Thermochemistry In the Bag Kit demonstrates both the endothermic andexothermic processes. Endothermic In the Bag studies a simple endothermic processof dissolving an inorganic salt that results in a solution that is <10°C. Exothermic Inthe Bag, studies an exothermic process of dissolving an inorganic salt that will heatthe solution up to >70°C. Kits contain enough materials to repeat the demonstrationsabout 20 times.94003 M 07 Full Thermochemsitry Demonstration
