Helpful Tips for Selecting A Charger

Focus on Joule Rating The number of Joules in a charger is the primary rating to consider when deciding how “powerful” a charger is. Miles, Acreage, Volts, and Watt Ratings on chargers can be very deceptive and should only be used as a general guideline. A Joule, or the unit of measurement of energy exerted per pulse, is the only statistic that will accurately provide the power of the charger. Output vs. Stored Energy should be evaluated as well. Some manufacturers only market the Stored Energy Joule Rating. The Output Rating is what the charger can actually produce in terms of Joules. A good rule of thumb is selecting a charger that has a 1 Joule (J) output energy rating for every 6 miles of electric wire.

Power Source While using 110v AC (plug in) may be the most efficient use of power for a charger, the 12v DC (battery or solar powered) offers benefits if AC power is unavailable or unreliable. Generally, an AC powered charger is sufficient for permanent fencing needs. A DC powered charger provides flexibility for temporary, rotational grazing fencing systems.

What Voltage do I need for my Poly Fence?

Choosing the right Poly Fence Product is just as important as having the right charger. Voltage is not absolute! What may measure 8,000 volts at the start of the fence may only measure 550 volts at the end. The best way to determine the power through the entire length of the fence is the OHMS/Mile rating. The lower the OHMS/Mile number, the longer down the fence the initial voltage rating will hold. For under 400ft of fence powered by a strong charger with a high Joule rating, the OHMS/Mile rating will not mean as much. Any length greater than 400ft and you will want to invest in a product with a superior OHMS/Mile Rating. This will ensure that all sections of your fence will be “hot” enough to deter your livestock or potential intruders.
