Cleaning
WARNING Disconnect fromthe mains supply before cleaningand allow the urn to cool.
IMPORTANT Do not immerse theurn in water or any other liquids andtake care to keep water away from themains lead and connections.
IMPORTANT Do not use anyabrasive cleaning fluids or materials.1 Wash out the urn. Use clean
water and a soft cloth. 2 Brush any scale or sediment from
the element. 3 Rinse thoroughly and buff with a
dry cloth. • Do not clean with a water jet.
DescalingIn hard water areas scale will
form on the element and walls. Thiswill adversely affect the operation ofthe urn if allowed to accumulate.Descaling can be simply achieved byusing a proprietary descaler. Chooseone recommended for stainless steelkettles. It is important to follow theinstructions given on the descalingsolution carton.
Scale build-up can also cause thetap to drip even when in its closedposition. If this should occurdisconnect from the mains supply,empty the urn, allow it to cool andunscrew the top of the tap from thebody of the tap. Wipe, scrape andbreak the scale away from the rubberflexible seal and also from the sealingsurface inside the metal part of thetap.
IMPORTANT Failure to de-scalewill invalidate your guarantee.

This electric catering urn isguaranteed for a period of 12 monthsfrom the date of purchase againstdefective materials or faultyworkmanship.
This guarantee is given subject tothe urn being used in accordance withthe instructions on the supply voltagemarked on it and to the usual fairwear and tear conditions.
The guarantee does not coverconsequential damage arising out ofany failure acceptable underguarantee, nor does it cover damageresulting from misuse, accident orunauthorised alterations to the urn.
In any communication with thesupplier or manufacturer, it is essentialto quote the catalogue numbermarked on the urn.
Proof of purchase will be required.In any communication with the
service department, it is essential toquote the model and serial numbermarked on the base of the urn.
This guarantee, in no waydiminishes the buyer’s statutoryrights.

the urn before switching on.1 Lift the lid and fill the urn with
the desired amount of water.• Do not fill above the ‘MAX’
capacity mark.WARNING If the urn is over
filled there is a risk that boiling watermay be ejected.• Under filling will cause the boil
dry cut-out to operate (and mayshorten the life of the element).The urn is not suitable for boiling
liquids other than water or for boilingwater containing small solid particles.If the water is being boiled for teamaking, it is best to make the tea inanother container. However, if it isnecessary to make the tea in the urnit should be suspended clear of theurn bottom and heating elements in amuslin bag. If it is intended to boillarge items such as puddings or hamsin the urn, they should be suspendedclear of the urn bottom and heatingelement.

water at an exact temperature, use athermometer to check this. Stir thewater before taking the temperatureand when the desired temperaturehas been reached, turn the controlknob slowly to the left until a clickfrom the thermostat is heard. Thethermostat will cycle on and off tomaintain the temperature.

5 Safety tap The tap is locked orunlocked by twisting it so thatthe closed or opened padlocksymbol is lined up with the whitedot on the tap body.
6 General operation There aretwo open positions, one self-holding so that the tap remainsopen, and the other self-closingso that the tap closes as soon asthe lever is released. To changethe tap position, turn the taplever through 180º.
7 Open the tap by depressing thetap lever into the horizontalposition.
8 Close the tap by returning thelever to a vertical position.
After use
9 Switch off to 0 and disconnectfrom the mains supply. Water may be left in the urn
when it is not in use for short periods,but to maintain a supply of freshwater, it should be emptiedperiodically and cleaned out.
Protective cut-outThe heating element is fitted
with a thermal cut-out which protectsthe urn from damage if it is allowedto boil dry or is switched on withoutwater. The cut-out re-setsautomatically as the boiler cools off.
In order to ensure correctoperation of this cut-out it is essentialto keep the heating element free fromscale. Failure to do this will result inthe cut-out operating before thewater has boiled.

Importantsafeguards
• No attempt must be made tomove or adjust the exposedelement without releasing themounting screws fully, otherwisedamage to the seal will occur.
• To avoid being scalded when theurn is operating or has just beenswitched off keep hands awayfrom any steam from the lid. Beparticularly careful not to touchhot surfaces when opening the lidor filling.
• Do not use the appliance if it hasmalfunctioned or has beendamaged in any way.
• Do not dismantle any part of theurn. Responsibility cannot beaccepted if this instruction isignored.
• Do not place the urn on or nearhot surfaces.
• Do not use accessories orattachments which are notrecommended or sold by BurcoAppliances as they can causehazards.
• This appliance must only be usedfor heating water.
• Always switch off and disconnectthe urn from the mains supplywhen not in use or whencleaning.
• To prevent any risk ofelectrocution do not immerse theurn in water or any other liquidwhen cleaning and do not allowany water or liquid to come intocontact with any of the electricalconnections or controls.
• Do not allow the cord to hangover the edge of the work surface,to touch wet or hot surfaces orbecome twisted.
• The urn should not be liftedwhilst connected to the mains.
• The urn should not be carriedwhilst it contains water,particularly hot or boiling water.
• Maintenance other than cleaningshould be performed by themanufacturer while this productis within guarantee (contact ourservice help line) or otherwise bya qualified service engineer.
Installation
Preparation
1 Remove any plastic film from theurn and wipe over all surfaceswith a damp cloth.
2 Check that the voltage shown onthe rating plate is suitable foryour supply.
3 Before general use it isrecommended that the urn isboiled twice discarding the watereach time.
Fitting a plug
The mains lead of this urn willalready be fitted with a BS1363 13Aplug. In the event of replacing a fuse,a 13 amp fuse approved by ASTA orBSI must be used.
If the plug is not suitable for yoursocket then the plug must be cut offand disposed of safely.
An appropriate plug should befitted as follows:
IMPORTANT: The wires in themains lead are coloured inaccordance with the following code:
Green-and-Yellow – EarthBlue – NeutralBrown – LiveThe wire, which is coloured green-
and-yellow, must be connected to theterminal in the plug which is markedwith the letter E or the earth symbol# or coloured green or green-and-yellow.
The wire, which is coloured blue,must be connected to the terminalwhich is marked with the letter N orcoloured black or blue.
The wire, which is colouredbrown, must be connected to theterminal which is marked with theletter L or coloured red or brown.
Make sure that the connectionsare tight and that there are no loosestrands of wire and no insulationtrapped under the terminals. Tightenthe clamp in the plug making surethat it grips the outer covering of thecord. In a 13A (BS 1363) fused plug,fit a 13A fuse. Tighten the plug coversecurely.
If you are in any doubt, consult aqualified electrician.
IMPORTANT: The supply cord onthis appliance is of a special type. Ifreplaced, only a Burco supply cordmust be used. The supply cord maybecome warm when the appliance isin use.
WARNING: This appliancemust be earthed.
