completed the work. “We can’t thank you

enough.”The care home makeo-

ver is the latest success story for Trades4Care, following earlier pilot pro-jects at Butterwick Hos-pice and Stainton Village Hall, and was supported by Gaunless Gateway Big Local Partnership.

Services offered also include home mainte-nance, gardening, and domestic cleaning includ-ing carpets, upholstery and hard floors, with plans to add plumbing, electrical, joinery and refuse removal next year.

The programme is being managed by co-founders and directors of Trades-4Care, Andrew Coxon and Charlie Wright, supported by trade colleague and trusted partner, Nigel Ste-vens.

Andrew said: “It’s clear that we are helping the community and the feed-back and interest we have received over the past few months from local community and care pro-jects, colleges and organ-isations has been really

positive and is gaining momentum.

“The grant from the Gaunless Gateway Big Local will be used along-side the financial and programme commitment made from Bishop Auck-land College and wider interest from other col-leges and organisations to deliver further pro-grammes for local young people over the coming months.”

Michelle Andelin, Learn-ing Area Manager for Con-struction and Motor Vehi-cle at Bishop Auckland College, added: ‘‘Trades-4Care not only gives our learners first-hand experi-ence in a working environ-ment, but also a valuable programme in which they develop their communi-cation, team building and employability skills.

“Every one of our learn-ers who has taken part in the initial projects has had a fantastic time.

“We can’t thank Trad-es4Care enough for this wonderful opportunity and are looking forward to other joint projects next year.”

RESIDENTS AT a County Durham care home received an early Christ-mas present with a make-over from dedicated painting and decorating students studying their trade at Bishop Auckland College.

West Lodge Care Home in Crook has a newly deco-rated lounge, dining room and corridors thanks to the talented team of five, who have been working with Trades4Care.

The innovative Commu-nity Interest Company gives young people valu-able work experience as part of a wider holistic life skills and employa-bility programme by pair-ing them with qualified tradespersons to work on maintenance projects at

healthcare, education and community venues.

Kate Lyons, General Manager of West Lodge Care Home, was delighted with the new look.

She said: “We’ve had a brilliant two weeks here at West Lodge thanks to Trades4Care and the local young people who have transformed one of our resident lounges, din-ing room and corridors.

“They have really done a fantastic job and the standard of work has been first class.

“Hats off to the stu-dents, who have left a lasting impression.

“The residents have loved having them and they even received a spontaneous round of applause when they had

September, with Bishop Celebrating Together.

“Thousands of peo-ple turned out to enjoy a variety of singers and performers on the main stage and the children enjoyed the grassed play area with giant toys and games.

“The popular Hallowe’en event, Monster Saturday, took place at the end of October, with magic, illu-sions and spooky danc-ing.”

Alan Anderson added: “In November, the town showcased a drive towards alternative ways to travel when the Electric Vehicle Roadshow came to town.

“Electric bikes and cars were on display and ready to ride in Bishop Auckland Market Place, and people took up the chance to give greener transport a go.

“December ended the year in style with over 30 local shops and busi-nesses joining in with Shop Local Indie-cem-ber by putting on a spe-cial offer throughout the month of December.”

David Pott said: “Advent Windows once again saw Bishop Auckland Town Centre turned into a giant advent calendar.

A total of 24 shops and businesses took part, offering space in their windows for 24 schools, community groups and organisations to create

an advent display. “This year’s theme

involved the construction of 24 life size models to help celebrate the unique heritage of Bishop Auck-land and the traditional nativity story.

“On Christmas Eve morning, more than a hundred people gathered at the Stan Laurel statue at the start of a parade through the town.

“On arrival at Auckland Castle, all the models were assembled on the altar steps at St Peter’s Chapel and Paul Butler, the Bishop of Durham, revealed the last model of the infant Jesus which was placed in front of the contemporary models of Jesus and Mary.”

December also saw a record number of over 700 children come to see Santa over the three Sat-urdays in No.42 Market Place and the Newgate Shopping Centre.

There was some fes-tive entertainment from vocalists Steven Berry and Ruth Stapleton and the service users at Inno-vations.

The team are now busy organising events for 2020.

TRIBUTES HAVE been paid to a Bishop Auckland motorcyclist who died in a Boxing Day crash.

The family of Carl Pep-per say they are heartbro-ken at their loss.

The 26-year-old died after his red Suzuki 600cc motorcycle crashed on South Church Industrial Estate, close to the junc-tion with the A688.

Emergency services were alerted at around 2.15am and despite the efforts of police and ambulance service crews, Mr Pepper was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

His family have released a statement paying trib-ute to their “beloved son”.

Carl Pepper was killed after his motorbike crashed in South Church.

They said: “Our beloved son Carl will be sadly missed by his parents Kevin and Trudy, steppar-ents Alex Berry and Rich-ard Reid, his sisters Lisa Marie Prince and Melanie Hubbard and his friends.

“Carl was taken from us far too soon and our hearts are broken.

“Goodnight our son. We love you and we will miss you, until we meet again”.

Cllr Carl Marshall, Dur-ham County Council’s Cabinet member for economic regeneration, said: “Our proposed pro-gramme of transforma-tion represents a massive investment in leisure over the coming years and reflects our desire to be at the forefront of chang-ing trends in leisure pro-vision.

“Reviewing our current offer has shown that there are significant opportu-nities for us to increase

participation in physical activity by providing a more vibrant, cost-effec-tive service that better meets customers’ expec-tations.

“We’re confident that our planned programme of investment will rein-vigorate leisure services across the county and secure their place at the heart of our communities for many years to come,” he added.

The proposals would see the council investing £62.8 million in trans-forming services across

BISHOP AUCKLAND Table Tennis Club has launched three brand new table tennis sessions.

The Auckland Youth and Community Centre will host a disability session on a Wednesday morn-ings from 10.30am until 12.30pm, open to every-one with a disability to go along and try the game out and enjoy table tennis.

Thanks to support of Believe housing and Table Tennis England the club have also started Bat & Chat sessions, which are social table tennis ses-sions designed just for fun with chatting encour-aged.

These sessions are ideal if you are looking to get more active or back into the sport.

The session take place on Fridays from 10.30am until 12 noon, also at the Auckland Youth and Com-munity Centre.

The disability and Bat and chat sessions are £3 per person. Carers are also welcome and play for free.

The third new session sees the introduction of new Family table tennis - thanks to support from Bishop Auckland and Shil-don AAP.

TABLE TENNIS CLUB OFFERS THREE NEW SESSIONS

The sessions are designed to give the whole family an activity they can all play together without the high cost of paying per person.

The sessions, which take place on Saturday mornings from 10.30am - 12.30pm at the club’s centre at Bishop Barring-ton School, cost £5 per family and large families are welcome, the more the merrier.

All sessions will have qualified coaches in attendance and have all equipment provided

“We listened to feed-back from users and the community before decid-ing the best sessions to offer,” said Club Chair-man, Matt Porter.

“Our mission has always been to offer table tennis for everyone,” he added, “and these new sessions really help us to offer even more opportunities to play table tennis for the com-munity.”
