Solution for the future
Coordinated multipoint transmission/reception CoMP One of the most important
technical improvements of LTE-advanced Rel.11
Minimize inter-cell interference for cells that are operating on the same frequency
CoMP categories Joint processing: coordination
between multiple TX/RX entities that are simultaneously transmitting or receiving
Coordinated scheduling or beamforming: single TX/RX point operates at the time

Scenario
FemtoCell
• Small, low-power base station• Plug and Play• Transmit data over Internet• Cheap
• Interference• Supports up to 10 m• Limited space
Cid:12739BS C
Up to last floor of the building, this base station provides signal
But what about ground floor?
No signal received
Approximately -83dBm
INDOOR PROBLEM
Behind the Building

Handover
PicoCell
• Small, low-power base station• Mounted on the wall• Transmit data over Internet• Expensive than FemtoCell
• Interference• Supports up to 100 m
-97 dBm
-91dBm
-105dBm
-107dBm

OUTDOOR PROBLEM
cid:12739Base Station C
Can’t transmit
cid:11643-11644Base Station B-93dBm
cid:47714BS A
Conclusion
• Due to high walls, signal cannot propagate into the area between buildings
• Decrease in received signal power should trigger handover decision• Walls block base station C to transmit signal inside the
building
• In order to increase capacity and coverage• For indoor, femtocells can be deployed• For outdoor, picocells can be deployed
