ANNOUNCEMENTS

Be Still By Jon Wong, Youth Co-Chairperson

In late August 2015, the youth leadership met and prayed about the theme for the year, basing it upon our vision: “A Christ-led, youth-empowered, loving community, impacting lives for Christ.” As we prayed, we felt God leading us to our theme for this year, “Unity in Outreach.” What a rollercoaster ride it has been since this theme has been decided! Unity, perhaps, is the last thing that we see amongst the church today, with all the divisions and differing opinions with regard to leadership changes and building project challenges.

Why would God, therefore, lead us to such a theme for the year? Why would He allow us to see so much disunity when the theme is unity? These are hard questions to answer. Where is God, in this mess called church?

Psalm 27:13-14 says, “I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong, and take heart and wait for the Lord.” Many times we tend to take action when we are impatient. We see things not going according to our plan, but we don’t see things from God’s perspective.

How do we attune our hearts and minds to God? By constant prayer and waiting for Him.

Psalm 46 says, “Be still and know that I am God.” Our bodies and brains are constantly moving to keep up with our schedules and responsibilities, our goals and our hopes. We must take time to be still and quiet, becoming more attuned to the spirit of God.

“I am God.”

1. In that he is God, he is an absolutely and infinitely perfect being. 2. As he is God, he is so great, that he is infinitely above all comprehension. 3. As he is God, all things are his own. 4. In that he is God, he is worthy to be sovereign over all things. 5. In that he is God, he will be sovereign, and will act as such. 6. In that he is God, he is able to avenge himself on those who oppose his sovereignty.

- Jonathan Edwards1

In light of the assurance of our Almighty God’s triumphs, we should take time throughout the day to be still and reverently honour Him as the God of power, love and sovereign control of all things.

A young boy traveling by airplane to visit his grandparents sat beside a man who happened to be a seminary professor. The boy was reading a Sunday school take-home paper when the professor thought he would have some fun with the lad. "Young man," said the professor, "If you can tell me something God can do, I'll give you a big, shiny apple." The boy thought for a moment and then replied, "Mister, if you can tell me something God can’t do, I'll give you a whole barrel of apples!"

In other words, we need to come to a place where we are willing to submit ourselves to God and acknowledge that He is in sovereign control.

When we realize that we are truly incapable of controlling life, we can surrender our will to God’s will. It may be a matter of finally saying we trust Him. This will open the door so that we may experience the fullness of all God wants and has for us. After all, He is our Creator and has a perfect plan for us when we let Him orchestrate it.
