Popular tours in Melbourne MELBOURNE CITY TOUR

Visit all the precincts of vibrant Melbourne. The City Tour is designed around what you would like to see. For those that do not know or want to see it all, you will find out why Melbourne is so well regarded for its food, sport, arts and fashion.

The tour will show you all the highlights like the Queen Victoria market, Port Phillip Bay, Botanical Gardens, St Kilda, Federation Square, cathedrals, museums, Melbourne Cricket Ground, tennis centre, Chapel Street and more.

Take a seat and enjoy the bustle of Melbourne’s city as your Driver Guide keeps you posted on what to look out for along the way.

City Centre First, you’ll tour through Melbourne’s city centre. Considered the shopping capital of Australia, the city and surrounding suburbs are home to modern shopping malls and boutique stores featuring world-class brands and products.

Sporting Complexes While other states may disagree, Melbourne is the sporting capital of the country. You’ll see the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) which hosts Aussie Rules football and is the birthplace of Test Cricket. You’ll also drive past Rod Laver Arena, the venue for the Australian Open Tennis Tournament and into Albert Park to see the Formula 1 Grand Prix track.

Parliament House

Next you can take a look at the imposing Parliament House. Construction of this enormous building commenced in 1855 and continued in stages until 1929. It is the largest 19th century building in Australia and is considered to be one of the finest examples of architecture from that period anywhere in the world.

Queen Victoria Market photo opportunity Drive past this treasured icon to the locals, a major landmark in Melbourne. It’s the only surviving 19th century market in the CBD and is also the largest open-air market in the Southern Hemisphere.

Fitzroy Gardens Now it’s time to stretch your legs and take a look around the beautiful Fitzroy Gardens. Set on 26 hectares, these gardens were classified by the National Trust in 1974 and are highly valued for their historic and horticultural significance. Here you can visit the Conservatory for its incredible floral display, or the quaint Tudor Village.

Cook’s Cottage This lovely little cottage in the heart of Fitzroy Gardens was the original home of Captain James Cook’s parents. It has been carefully restored and maintained, filled with furniture of the period and surrounded by a garden of the 18th century. Take a wander into the cottage and you’ll be transported back in time to the 1700s.

Shrine of Remembrance You’ll be deeply moved by this proud memorial to the men and women of Australia who served in the First World War. It is one of the largest memorials in the country and is Melbourne’s most recognised landmark.

GREAT OCEAN ROAD & TWELVE APOSTLES The Great Ocean Road stretches for 243 kilometres along the stunning south-eastern coast between Torquay and Warrnambool. An Australian National Heritage listed road, it was built by returned soldiers between 1919 and 1932. The road winds through gorgeous terrain along the coast and leads you to many significant landmarks and natural wonders.

Memorial Arch You’ll make a stop at the Memorial Arch, the gateway to the Great Ocean Road. The arch was built in honour of the 3,000

returned soldiers who worked on the road and its creation during World War I. The stretch of road was completed in 1932.

Apollo Bay At the foothills of the Otways lies the gorgeous seaside village of Apollo Bay. Surrounded by rolling green hills and ocean, Apollo Bay is a lively holiday destination during summer. Here you can relax and treat yourself to lunch (own expense) at one of the many cafés and restaurants, or you can take a stroll along the picturesque beachfront.

The Twelve Apostles The rugged splendour of the approaching Twelve Apostles is just breathtaking. These incredible limestone rock formations up to 45 metres high are the result of erosion that began up to 20 million years ago. Your Guide will share the history of their fascinating evolution while you take in the great spectacle of this natural wonder. If you find you can only count 8 Apostles and not 12 – test your Driver Guide’s knowledge as to why!!

Scenic Walk There are many walks around the location of the Twelve Apostles providing closer access to the shoreline. From the cliff top viewing area you can absorb the grandeur of this iconic site and take some photographs.

Loch Ard Gorge Now you’ll visit the beautiful Loch Ard Gorge and learn of the ill-fated English ship ‘Loch Ard’ that ran aground on nearby Muttonbird Island in 1878. The ship sank within 15 minutes, taking with it all but two of the 54 passengers and crew on board. The survivors came ashore and found refuge at what is now known as Loch Ard Gorge, a striking example of the process of erosion.

Port Campbell Now you can take a well earned break at the gorgeous little seaside village of Port Campbell. Sheltered by cliffs and Norfolk pines, this little haven has a colourful and lively personality. You can treat yourself to afternoon tea at one of the cafés or bakeries luring you to homemade treats (own expense). You can also enjoy a wander through the boutique stores and galleries – there’s plenty here to tempt you.

PHILLIP ISLAND – PENGUINS, KANGAROOS & KOALAS

You will travel south-east, heading to Westernport Bay. The route will take you through many of Melbourne’s affluent suburbs where you will see tree lined streets and beautiful homes, many built in the late 1800s. As the South Gippsland Highway approaches the landscape becomes more rural dotted with smaller townships and farming properties.

Maru Koala & Animal Park First stop is Maru Koala & Animal Park for up close and personal encounters with koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, Tasmanian Devils and much more!

Phillip Island You’ll cross the only bridge that connects Phillip Island to the mainland. Home to the famous Penguin Parade, Phillip Island also features a stunning coastline with great surf conditions and a range of wildlife including the largest colony of fur seals in Australia. It is also the location of our Motorcycle Grand Prix track, so it’s no wonder this island paradise attracts up to 3 million visitors each year.

Nobbies Rock Formations Before reaching the Penguin Parade site you’ll see the ‘Nobbies’, so named for its unique rock formations. Located at the western tip of the island, this area has high conservation significance due to its population of penguins and graceful sea birds.

Penguin Parade So you think the koalas are cute – just wait until you see the Little Penguins. After visiting the information centre, you’ll head down to Summerland Beach to witness penguin magic. As the sun sets, the wild Little Penguins emerge from the sea after a hard days fishing and waddle across the sand to their dune burrows. These Little Penguins are the smallest of the penguin species and Phillip Island is home to the largest colony in the world. It’s easy to understand why this wonderful spectacle is one of Australia’s most popular wildlife attractions. To protect these Little Penguins, all revenue

generated from the parade is invested into environment and education projects.he Great Ocean Road stretches for 243 kilometres along the stunning south-eastern coast between Torquay and Warrnambool. An Australian National Heritage listed road, it was built by returned soldiers between 1919 and 1932. The road winds through gorgeous terrain along the coast and leads you to many significant landmarks and natural wonders.

SOVEREIGN HILL - BALLARAT Sovereign Hill, a wonderful outdoor museum exhibiting in ‘real life’ the story of Australia’s gold rush history.

Ballarat As you arrive in Ballarat you’ll come to understand the historical significance of this town. In its centre the lush tree-lined streets are filled with grand homes of the Victorian era, many the result of prosperity from the gold fields of the 1850s. Today, Ballarat is a major regional centre and the commercial capital of the Central Highlands with a population of almost 100,000.

Sovereign Hill When you arrive at Sovereign Hill you’ll be placed back in time to the great gold rush era of the 1850s. It’s just like stepping into a working town of the time, with period-style homes, shops and retailers, blacksmiths, hotels and costumed characters that bring the exhibition to life. You can wander through the town to get a feel for the lifestyle as it was then.

Eureka Stockade The first thing that you’ll experience at Sovereign Hill is the amazing story of the Eureka Stockade, an event that was fuelled by government taxes that were being imposed on miners at the time. The first armed rebellion of its kind in Australia, it led to the deaths of twenty-two diggers and five troopers, and changed Australia’s history forever with the birth of democracy.

Red Hill Mine Tour Go down into the depths of a real underground gold mine and discover the dark and dangerous world of deep lead mining. Here you’ll also witness the discovery of the famous ‘Welcome Nugget’.

Page 7: ELBOURNE B - atpinbound.com.auatpinbound.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Melbourne.pdf · 4. Melbourne Cricket Ground & National Sports Museum 5. Eureka Skydeck 6. National Gallery

Gold-panning One of the many fun things you can do at Sovereign Hill is pan for gold. There are diggers on hand to show you the tricks used to strike it rich, and then you can have a go and try your own luck.

Street Theatre You’ll be entertained by the many performances each day illustrating the exciting and colourful life on the gold fields. With wonderful costumes of the day and many stories to share, the characters will sweep you up in the fun of it all.

PUFFING BILLY HERITAGE STEAM TRAIN JOURNEY This morning you are going to enjoy some good old fashioned fun amidst some of the most beautiful rainforest in Victoria. The journey will take you through Melbourne’s eastern suburbs with views of the Dandenongs in the distance.

The Dandenongs The Dandenong Ranges, known to the locals as the Dandenongs, are beautiful low mountain ranges just 35kms east of Melbourne. At their peak, they rise to more than 630 metres and are cloaked in lush rainforests of Mountain Ash trees (the tallest flowering plant in the world), waterfalls, rolling hills and steep valleys. The region is home to the famous Puffing Billy Railway, numerous art and craft stores and cafés offering delicious homemade produce.

Grants on Sherbrooke & Devonshire Tea Nestled in the heart of the Dandenong Mountains is Grants on Sherbrooke – a haven in the wilderness. On arrival you’ll be charmed by the surrounding mountain hue and crisp clear air. While here you’ll enjoy a traditional Devonshire Tea of homemade scones, served warm with jam and cream, and tea served in china tea cups – just a treat!

Handfeeding the Bird Life Grants on Sherbrooke is a paradise for bird life and you’ll be serenaded by the wonderful bird song that fills the valley. You can also handfeed some of the most striking Australian birds such as the colourful Crimson Rosella, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo and Pink-chested Galah. It’s a lot of fun and a great opportunity to get a photo.

Puffing Billy Steam Train Next you head the short distance to Belgrave, home of the famous Puffing Billy Steam Train, where you are in for a real treat! This century-old steam train is maintained in its original glory and runs to this day on its own mountain track from Belgrave to Menzies Creek. Here you’ll go back in time as you get on board for a 30 minute ride through the heart of the rainforest. You’ll see the locomotive depot that

services and maintains the train, head through the gorgeous Sherbrooke Forest and ride over the old Trestle Bridge. Just before Menzies Creek you can see stunning views of Port Phillip Bay. What a great ride!

Sassafras From Menzies Creek you’ll then be on your way to the lovely little village of Sassafras. You’ll be travelling through thick rainforest that is home to all sorts of wildlife, so keep an eye out for Lyre Birds and Wallabies. Once in Sassafras you can take your time to explore the delightful antique and craft shops dotted throughout the village. You might even find a little something to take home with you.
