Aladdin ExperienceOn Wednesday our band students visited the Capitol Theatre for a performance of Aladdin, the Musical. This was a first time experience for many of our students and I would like to thank Mrs Beck Heather and Mrs Lou England for organising this spectacular event. I would also like to thank Ms Cynthia Pitt and Mrs Sylvia Zaratsian for giving up their time after school hours to accompany the students. I was extremely pleased to receive very positive feedback from the public regarding the exemplary behaviour of Elanora Heights students – well done students and staff!

Green Day!What a busy first week of school we had with all of our wonderful environmental education activities! Students participated in a wide range of stimulating activities including the creation of environmental artworks, exploration of catchment areas and our local environment, discovering how different types of rocks are formed, learning about how water changes the environment and even making healthy smoothies using a Blender Bike!

My sincere thanks to Mrs Jenny Cullen for her outstanding coordination of these events. I would also like to thank Mrs Emmi Collins and her team of brave parent helpers who helped with the K-2 art sessions, Mr Giles Smith who shared his geology and palaeontology knowledge and dazzled us with his rock collection, Mrs Emily Munday who spoke to Year 2 at Nareen Creek and the parents who accompanied them on the walk there, Mrs Toni Wilson who tailor-made a presentation for our students on the changing nature of the landscape at Narrabeen Lagoon, and the many specialist staff who ran workshops with our students from the Coastal Envrionment Centre, Gibberagong and the Aboriginal Heritage Office. Elanora students will lead the way in preserving our beautiful natural environment for years to come.

Navy Band VisitNext Tuesday, 25 October students in Years 1-6 will be treated to a performance from the Navy Band. This will be a wonderful opportunity for our students to witness an outstanding and highly engaging band performance and perhaps provide the inspiration for some budding musicians! Whilst the ‘incursion’ is of no cost to the school, we are asking all students to donate a gold coin on the day which will go towards supporting our wonderful band program at Elanora Heights. My thanks again to Mrs Bec Heather for organising this fantastic experience for our students.

Selective High School Online Applications Just a reminder that the online application process for 2018 Selective High School is now open for any interested parents of Year 5 students. Please return your Intention to Apply letter to the office by this Friday 21 October and make sure you visit: www.schools.nsw.edu.au/shsplacement before applications close on 14 November to complete the process.

Week 2 promises to be filled with many more engaging experiences for our students, commencing with Year 5 visiting the Warriewood Wetlands and culminating in the Fathers’ Camp Out on Saturday. I look forward to meeting many of our Dads at this fun event!

Tuesday is World Food DayYear 4 has plans to conduct a waste audit to gain an insight into how much food is being wasted. We do see whole items of food and drink thrown away, both from home and from the canteen. Teachers ask children to take home any substantially uneaten items so parents get this feedback. However, that is not possible with canteen items. Use World Food Day as a reminder to talk with your children about their school food and drink and whether any items are too big or unwanted. In particular, many drinks are thrown away each day with little having been drunk.

NAVY BAND PERFORMINGThe Navy Band will be performing at Elanora Height Public School on Tuesday, November 25th at 1:45pm.On that day we ask that your child to please bring in a gold coin as a donation to our Elanora Heights School Music program.

The school community are welcome to attend the concert, which is always a hit with our students and teachers.

... IM GARDENINGJanine Ralston worked with 1M to plant a new garden outside the Stellar room, beside the middle oval. They planted herbs (parsley, oregano), vegetables (carrots, lettuce, kale, capsicum) and strawberries.. All those food scraps and paper bags placed each day in the compost bins decompose into excellent soil.

1M used some of the finished compost to enrich the soil for their new garden.

Eat-a-rainbow everyday!Last term K-2 children participated in a Live Life Well @ School initiative - Eat-a-Rainbow.

To build on the importance of having varied fruits and vegetables in their diets, we would like to highlight an alternative birthday celebration option. For only $10.00 our canteen staff will make up a rainbow platter similar to the one pictured here.

Just ring the canteen on 9913 2721 at least 24 hours beforehand to order.

One of our team members will deliver the platter to your child’s class, usually around fruito-vego time in the morning.

The canteen needs more volunteers on selected dates in Term 4..... Please have a look at the roster below and let Erku know if you are able to help – even if it’s for an hour or two.

Our canteen is a fantastic way to meet others in the school com-munity, provide healthy food to our kids and raise funds for our school – all of our profits go back to the P&C. Volunteers can also have recess and lunch with their children now that we have our capable year six students helping to serve.

Please contact Erku on 9913 2721 or [email protected]

Y... Voluntary Contribution

Writing this column each week is, in the main, an enjoyable exercise where a sometimes tenuous link between the community and the school is made. One thing I don’t particularly enjoy are the weekly exhortations for the community to make a voluntary contribution to the school. I’d like to write next week that the target is met, what an extraordinary group of people we have at this school and here is a list of projects for the school’s consideration.

So far we have contributions from 39 families (10% of all families) and $4,255 has been raised for the improvement of EHPS. A huge thank you to those who have contributed, and I might add, there have been some truly generous contributions.

So, we have 361 families yet to contribute and a further $21,745 to reach our target, that’s $60 per family. Just over $1 per week. Surely this is doable!

P&C 2017This is my last term at EHPS and the P&C at the very least will be looking for a new President for 2017. All positions are declared vacant at the AGM to be held in November. If you have a desire to serve the school community (and could there be anything better?) please send an email to [email protected] so we can hopefully put some structure in place for 2017.

Upcoming EventsNot to be missed is the annual Fathers’ Day Campout on the top oval this coming weekend. Forms have gone home, please return by tomorrow so the catering corps can order essential supplies for the hungry masses.

Carols night is on Friday December 2 and this is a great opportunity to start the festive season with some fine music from our talented school musicians and choirs.

Art ClassesThere are still places available for the Art Class held on Tuesday afternoons from 3pm to 4:30pm. The minimum age for students is 7.

Please [email protected] if you are interested in a spot.

P&C MeetingPlease email items you wish to place on the Agenda for the P&C meeting next week, Wednesday, 26 October at 7:15pm in the Staffroom to [email protected] .

Last Wednesday I had the pleasure of attending Aladdin along with 54 of our wonderful band members involved in the EHPS Music Program.

What a fantastic show! The sets, the colourful costumes, the music, the singing and dancing kept all the children mesmerised for over 2 hours. We all loved seeing the children’s reactions, particularly those who had never seen live theatre before.

Thank you to Ms Pitt and Ms Zaratsian for keeping the kids under control on the long noisy bus ride, and to my fellow parents, Sharri Boucher and Angela Cole for helping supervising.

Thank you also to the children for their perfect behaviour throughout the day and I’m looking forward to seeing a whole new musical production in 2017.

….that our students love to visit ‘Pickle town’?Has your child ever come home saying that they went to Pickle town today? Or perhaps they’ve come home with their pockets full of gum nuts?

One of the most loved areas in the playground is the bushy and clay slope of the top oval – affectionately known as Pickle town. Here the children

create shops and sell fairy dust (crushed soil) and popping candy (sap on the end of sticks). Gum nuts are the local currency. Robbers can also lurk about but the local police and judges soon clean up the trouble.

Pickle town was created more than 20 years ago, when Mrs. O’Reilly’s daughter and friends undertook a school project. They were to describe what was out of their school window to their ‘sister’ school in Denmark. Their imaginations ran wild, and up sprung this very unique and creative play area.

Year 1 enjoy odd weeks of the term at Pickle town and Year 2 enjoy the even weeks.
