the Puerto Angelito sun. The landscape extends in various tones of blue from the sea to the sky, interrupted by white boats and colorful swimsuits.

In the palapas a large gather-ing brings locals, tourists and many children together for hours waiting enthusiastically for the arrival of the biggest dorado.

The stage, the music, the judge’s area surrounded by cu-rious onlookers. There is expec-tation.

Finally, three teams qualify, coinciding with two specimens both weighing 14 kilos, 400 grams. The rules are followed and it is finally settled which is the winning fish. The Yamaha motorcycle is for Alberto Pan-

el sol de Puerto Angelito. El paisaje se alarga en diversos tonos de azul desde el mar al cielo interrumpido por blan-cas naves y coloridos bañistas.

En las palapas una gran convivencia reúne por horas a locales, turistas, residentes y muchos niños que esperan con entusiasmo la llegada del mejor dorado. El escenario, la música con personalidad, el área de jueces rodeada por curiosos. Expectación.

The professional offshore fish-ing equipment is won by Ulises Aragón, on the boat Laura, and in third place is Juan Herrera García, from Pinotepa Nacio-nal, on the Fénix, who receives $5,000.

It is the second time the re-cently formed sportfishing club Fragatas de Puerto Angelito has organized this tournament. The treasurer, Omar Ramírez Patiño, comments that the the number of participants doubled from 38 to 61 boats. This time they changed the date from March to January as the conditions then are better.

According to Omar, offshore fishing is done six to eight miles out. The species that are brought in are sailfish, marlin, yellowfin tuna, dorado and shark. “We call inshore fishing that which is done along the shore, along the rocks where there are no swordfish, red snapper, porgy or rooster fish.

In Spanish they call it “pesca menor” and Omar explained the geographical conditions that facilitate fishing on this coast. “Three miles from the coast we have the first drop-off about 1,800 meters deep and that makes the currents coming from the south hit against the lower part, which makes the food rise to the surface; crabs, squid, fly-ing fish as well as sardines, basic foods for the large fish like the dorado.”

The area for the dorado con-test stretches from Punta Mal-donado in the west and Santa Elena in the east, and from three to 30 nautical miles offshore. Like the other tournaments, this one begins at seven in the morning and finishes at three in the afternoon.

Fishing tournaments can be one day in duration, or up to three. They all have the same regulations and each one ex-cludes certain species. I com-mented to the treasurer that sailfish were caught and that one even weighed 90 kilos, almost double the weight of the winner

in November, to which he replied “that depends on the conscience of each fisherman, but it is not in the terms for this competi-tion (dorado)”. He assures and clarifies that their capture is not accepted. “It is a species that needs to be taken care of and we are trying to promote the catch-and-release model, so that the sailfish does not become extinct and that in the future Puerto Escondido remains an excellent place for sportfishing.”

The dorado is a common in-habitant of the Oaxacan coast. During the summer season when there is a lot of rain, from July to September, the females deposit their eggs in logs that have ended up in the ocean, and they develop quickly. From April to May there are young or very small dorado, they call them peanut, chicken or dolphin fish, and they weigh from 1 to 2 kilos. Between June and July they weigh 5 to 8 kilos, in September and October, 9 to 10 kilos and in December-January they get up to 15 kilos.

Herrera, explains that the best technique is “to have a lot of patience and go out early, at the time the fish eat; afterwards, around 11 or 12, they don’t eat. For those who already know how, the dorado is easy to catch.”

Thirty per cent of the par-ticipants in the dorado fishing contest were foreigners, com-ing from Canada, U.S.A., and Europe, a number that appears to be growing.

Anyone interested in fishing can approach the cooperatives that operate formally in Bahía Principal and Puerto Angelito, where you will find experienced captains and assistants. Licenses can be obtained from these same associations, so that your fishing trip will conform to the rules. They can be bought for a day, three days, a week, for one month or for a year. The latter costs $600.

Omar explains, “The fishing day begins at 7 in the morning. The rental of the boat is for one hour (currently costs $500) and for a good catch you need some five hours to cover a good area.”

A continuación el equipo profesional de pesca de altura lo obtiene Ulises Aragón, con la embarcación Laura y en tercera posición Juan Herrera García, de Pinotepa Nacional, en la lancha Fénix, recibe cinco mil pesos.

Es la segunda ocasión que el reciente club de pesca de-portiva Fragatas de Puerto An-gelito organiza este encuentro. Su tesorero, Omar Ramírez Patiño, comenta que doblaron el número de participantes, de treinta y ocho a sesenta y un embarcaciones.

Esta vez adelantaron la fe-cha del torneo de marzo a enero pues las condiciones son más favorables, “en esta época resulta fácil encontrar especies maduras y en buena cantidad, a unas tres o cuatro millas al interior”.

Según Omar la pesca de altura es la que se lleva a cabo mar adentro después de 6 u 8 millas. Las especies que entran son el pez vela, marlín, atún aleta amarilla, dorado y tiburón.

“Nosotros le llamamos pes-ca menor a la que se realiza por la orilla, a lo largo de las rocas donde hay pez sierra, huachinango, pargo o pez gallo. En inglés le dicen “in-shore fishing” y detalla en forma simple las condiciones geográficas que facilitan la pesca en este litoral.

“A tres millas de la costa tenemos el primer escalón de unos mil ochocientos metros de profundidad y eso hace que las corrientes que vienen del sur peguen contra la parte baja y eso hace subir a la superficie la comida. Suben jaibas, cala-mar, pez volador igualmente

sardinas, alimentos básicos para los peces grandes, como el dorado”.

El área para el certamen de dorado comprende desde Punta Maldonado hacia el oeste y Santa Elena del lado este, y de tres hasta 30 millas náuticas mar adentro. Al igual que los otros, inician a las siete de la mañana y finalizan a las tres de la tarde, la premiación siempre dilata, la idea es que el público aproveche la ocasión y disfrute de un platillo fresco y delicioso.

Pueden durar un día o ex-tenderse por tres jornadas. Todos aplican el mismo regla-mento y cada uno excluye ciertas especies.

Le comento al tesorero que sacaron pez vela, incluso uno peso 90 kilos, casi el doble del que gano en noviembre, a lo que responde “eso depende de la conciencia de cada pes-cador, pero no estaba dentro de las bases de este torneo (Dorado)” asegura y aclara que no aceptan su captura, “se trata de una especie que hay que cuidar y nosotros estamos tratando de motivar el modelo atrapar y soltar, catch and rea-lese, para que el pez vela no se extinga y en el futuro Puerto Escondido sea un excelente lugar para la pesca deportiva”.

El dorado es un habitante muy popular de las costas de Oaxaca, en temporada estival cuando hay mucha lluvia, de julio a septiembre, las hem-bras depositan los huevos en los troncos que llegan al mar y se desarrollan rápidamente. De abril a mayo habitan dora-dos juveniles o muy pequeños, le dicen peanuts chiken o dol-fins, de 1 o 2 kilos.

Entre junio y julio pesan 5 u 8 kilos, en septiembre y octubre, 9 a 10 kilos y en diciembre-enero llegan hasta

Herrera, explica que la técnica es “tener mucha paciencia y salir temprano, a la hora que comen los peces, después como a las 11 o 12, no comen. Para los que ya saben, el do-rado es fácil de capturar”.

Un treinta por ciento de extranjeros integraron la con-tienda de Dorado, de Canadá, Estados Unidos y europeos, al parecer se trata de un atractivo in crescendo.

Si te interesa practicarlo pu-edes acudir a las cooperativas que operan formalmente en Bahía Principal y Puerto An-

gelito, encontrarás capitanes y ayudantes experimentados. Es posible obtener los permisos en las mismas asociaciones, así tu jornada se apegará a las normativas vigentes. Se puede comprar por un día, tres, una semana, por un mes o un año. Este último tiene un costo de $600.

Omar lo detalla así “un día de pesca inicia a las 7 de la ma-ñana. La renta de la lancha es por hora (actualmente cuesta $500) y para una buena pesca se requieren unas cinco horas, para abarcar una buena zona, estudiar y leer las corrientes, para que sea un día de éxito.”

dido three years ago, invited by Patrice to form part of the yearly Dreamweavers display that is held in Casa Tejesueños at the end of January in the Co-lonia Emiliano Zapata. It is an exhibition of pieces made with traditional backstrap weaving techniques.”

It is a privilege to talk to Abi-gail Mendoza who last Novem-ber 2013 won first place in the national textile art competition with a piece to which she had dedicated almost two months of her time.

“I participated with a very minute pajilla, three millime-tres wide by two meters, 25 centimeters long. It includes a variety of 100 different designs, traditional and contemporary.” In a photograph it isn’t possible to appreciate its richness and subtlety, but on the exhibition table I see that her designs and the quality of work are marvel-ous.

Abigail was born 35 years ago in Santo Tomás, Jalieza, some 26

kilometres from Oaxaca in the central valleys, and at the age of six was initiated into backstrap weaving.

“I began with simple pieces and at the age of ten I began to make them more complex. The family started to use fine sewing thread and so I learned that technique and try to im-prove it.”

Abigail doesn’t have children yet, but she teaches her three nephews, aged eight, seven and four. “It is good that they learn the trade of the community in addition to their studies.”

She uses wool, silk or cotton, and explains that in some cases she uses natural dyes when it comes to silk threads and some wools, but that it is different for the cotton, as that type of fiber results in softer tones.

“All of the bright and vibrant colours are aniline; the natural ones result in lower grada-tions. They can be dyed with pomegranate shells or coconut shells and they give off a yellow tone, but they are muted, not bright. The cotton that we use

for the very fine pieces we buy already coloured because you cannot dye a material like that.”

While we speak my gaze wanders restlessly over the details of the bags and brace-lets presented this time. I love the colours and the little dolls she blends into her items.

Abigail met Patrice at the Museo de Arte Textil de Oaxa-ca, where she exhibited some of her work and was invited to offer workshops on these techniques.

“The museum organized an expo sale, they invited me and we met; she had spent a lot of time looking for pieces woven with fine threads. That is how our friendship began. She placed orders with me, now her friends do too.”

I have to ask, “Do you feel like an artist for having received this recognition?” Abigail responds with a blunt “no.”

“I love doing this, it is my work, my passion, it satisfies me and I do it for love. People

who recognize it come and it gives me a lot of satisfaction, it motivates me to work more, to make things that are different. But first and foremost is the work that I have done since I was six years old; everything comes in due time.”

And so the prize came be-cause it was supposed to, it was won through Abigail’s love of her work.

desde hace tres años invitada por Patrice integrando la mues-tra anual Dreamweavers que realiza en su Casa Tejesueños a fines de enero en la colonia Emiliano Zapata. Se trata de una refinada exhibición de piezas elaboradas con técnicas tradi-cionales de telar de cintura.”

Es un privilegio poder conver-sar con Abigail Mendoza quién hace poco, en noviembre del 2013, obtuvo el primer lugar en el Concurso Nacional de Arte Textil con una obra a la que le dedico casi dos meses de su tiempo.

“Participé con una pajilla muy miniatura, de 3 milímetros de ancho por 2 metros con 25 centímetros de largo. Incluye una variedad de cien diseños diferentes, tradicionales y con-temporáneos”. En la fotografía del catálogo no es posible apre-ciar su riqueza y sutilidad, pero en la mesa de exhibición veo sus diseños, la calidad de su ejecución, son maravillosos.

Abigail nació hace treinta y cinco años en Santo Tomás, Jalieza, a unos veintiséis kiló-metros de Oaxaca, en los valles centrales y a los seis años se inició en este oficio. “Mi tejido

es telar de cintura en la técnica labrado de urdimbre. Empecé con piezas simples y a los diez años comencé a hacerlas más complejas. La familia comenzó a usar hilos de coser finos en-tonces aprendí esa técnica y trato de mejorarla”.

Por el momento no tiene hijos, pero le enseña a sus tres sobrinos de ocho, siete y cuatro años “independientemente de que estudien, es bueno que aprendan el oficio de la comu-nidad”.

Emplea lanas, sedas o al-godón, me explica que en al-

gunos casos utiliza tintes natu-rales, cuando se trata de hilos de seda y algunas lanas pero es distinto para el algodón ya que por el tipo de fibra se obtiene un tono más suave.

“Todos los colores fuertes y vibrantes son anilinas, los naturales proporcionan una gradación más baja. Se pueden teñir con cáscaras de granada o coco y dan un tono amarillo, pero son bajos no chillantes. El algodón que ocupamos para las piezas muy finas lo compramos ya de colores porque no se pu-ede teñir un material así”.

Mientras hablamos mi mira-da recorre inquieta los detalles de los bolsos y pulseras que pre-senta esta vez, me encantan sus colores y los muñequitos que integra a sus objetos, percibo ar-monía, dualidad en sus texturas.

Conoció a Patrice en el Museo de Arte Textil de Oaxaca, donde se exponen algunas de sus obras y es invitada a dictar talleres sobre estas técnicas. “El museo organizo una expo venta, me invitaron y coincidimos. Ella tenía mucho tiempo buscando piezas tejidas con hilos finos, así comenzó nuestra amistad. Me encargaba cosas, ahora sus amistades también lo hacen”.

Es inevitable preguntarle, ¿te sientes artista por haber recibido este reconocimiento?, Abigail responde en seco “no” y reímos, “amo hacer esto, es mi trabajo, es mi pasión, me satisface y lo hago por amor. Viene gente que lo reconoce y me da muchísimo gusto, me motiva a trabajar más, a hacer cosas diferentes, pero en sí, lo primordial y lo primero es por el trabajo que he realizado desde los seis años, todo llega a su tiempo”. Entonces el premio llego porque tenía que llegar, lo atrajo el amor.
