La fuente histórica más antigua que cita a Navas del rey es el Libro de Montería de Alfonso XI, rey de Castilla y León. En él se mencionan los terrenos de Navas como lugar de cacería dentro de la Dehesa Real.

Junto al cementerio actual se levantan las ruinas de un antiguo pabellón de caza o fortaleza que usaba el rey Enrique IV. Este torreón, de posible construcción árabe existía ya en el siglo XII por lo que en estas fechas el lugar ya estaba ocupado.

El municipio pudo surgir como un apoyo a la repoblación de la zona o como protección de algún señorío. El lugar estaba habitado pero todavía es pronto para hablar de núcleo urbano ya que éste no se formó hasta finales del siglo XVIII.

Originariamente el nombre de este municipio era Dehesa de las Navas del Rey. Posiblemente el nombre se debe a los cobertizos o tenadas para guardar el ganado de pasto propiedad del monarca.

En 1.306 su territorio fue donado por Don Sancho Manuel, Infante de Castilla, al monasterio cisterciense de Valdeiglesias en la persona del Abad Martín I y durante esta época se pobló de cabañas ganaderas, lo que acabó desembocando en un pleito con la Villa de San Martín de Valdeiglesias. Dada su baja densidad de caseríos acabó conociéndose al municipio como “ Las Casas”.

En 1.434 Don Álvaro de Luna, Condestable de Castilla, compró el término de San Martín al convento de Santa María la Real. Como resultado, la Dehesa de las Navas del Rey pasó a depender jurídica y administrativamente de San Martín de Valdeiglesias, aunque eclesiásticamente siguió dependiendo del convento que había vendido sus terrenos.

En ese siglo hubo un acontecimiento que impulsó el desarrollo económico social de Navas del Rey, la construcción del puente de San Juan sobre el río Alberche, entre los años 1.459 y 1.460. La vida social y económica de Navas, al igual que las demás poblaciones de los alrededores, ha estado íntimamente ligada al río Alberche.

Después de la muerte de Don Álvaro de Luna, ajusticiado en Valladolid, la propiedad del territorio de Navas pasa por distintas manos hasta acabar siendo propiedad de la Corona de Castilla, de la Reina Isabel la Católica quien lo tiene bajo su jurisdicción. Mandó derribar la fortaleza que allí existía pues con frecuencia éste castillo servía como morada a bandoleros que se dedicaban a saquear los alrededores. Algunas de las piedras que formaban ésta edificación ahora forman parte del vallado del cementerio. En la actualidad lo que queda de ésta edificación ésta siendo restaurada en cooperación con el Ayuntamiento de Navas del Rey, por la Dirección General de Patrimonio.

Durante el siglo XVI en Navas había pocos habitantes, pero parece que los suficientes pues en 1.555 se designa por parte del monasterio una casa para que en ella los monjes recojan las rentas que en forma de diezmos (parte de los frutos, regularmente la décima, que pagaban los fieles a la iglesia) todos los años recibían.

Los habitantes de Navas del Rey, tuvieron que esperarla siglo XVIII para que les concedieran curato propio y vicaría perpetua. Las peticiones oficiales no se iniciaron hasta el año 1.770 cuando solicitaron parroquia y cementerio propios al arzobispado de Toledo.

El convento de Valdeiglesias, que percibía sus diezmos, se opuso a la independencia eclesiástica de Navas, aunque el 16 de junio de 1.774 se concedió al municipio estas peticiones. Algunos años más tarde, en 1789, el capellán de la parroquia de Navas Haciéndose eco de las peticiones de sus vecinos escribía de nuevo al arzobispo de Toledo para pedir la separación jurisdiccional de San Martín de Valdeiglesias y su posterior incorporación a la Corona.

La respuesta a esta petición llegó de la mano de Fernando VII que otorgó el título de Villa a este municipio el 22 de abril de 1.819 con el nombre de Navas del Rey, con la condición de que los vecinos construyeran Casa Ayuntamiento y cárcel en el término de dos años. También les otorgo amplias facultades para elegir alcaldes ordinarios y escribanos, así como para poner horca, picota y cuchillo y las otras insignias de jurisdicción, dejándola libre de la justicia de San Martín de Valdeiglesias.

Ha este hecho le sucedió el proceso de demarcación de los territorios de Navas del Rey y de San Martín, que se saldó con acalora-das discusiones y se cerraron con la Escritura del Convenio y Transacción entre la Villa de San Martín y ésta de Navas del Rey, con fecha 29 de abril de 1837.

En 1863 fue quemado el monasterio cisterciense de Valdeiglesias, pasando todos los bienes que poseía al Estado, así como los bienes y propiedades que disfrutaban en el término de Navas del Rey.

Finalmente la Marquesa de Santa Elena concedió algunos favores al pueblo en forma de donaciones.

Por lo que se refiere a la producción, en esa época el término de Navas del Rey recoge fértiles aptas especialmente para el cultivo de cereales y vid, aunque también es muy importante su actividad ganadera a pesar de la abundancia de depredadores que delatan la presencia en la toponimia local. En el Siglo XIX la actividad agrícola se basaba en el cultivo de cereales, vides, olivos y hortalizas. Exportaba a Madrid parte de su producción. La población en esta época rondaba los 750 habitantes. En la actualidad contamos con una población de 2.700 habitantes aprox.

The oldest source citing Navas del Rey is the ‘Libro de la Montería’ of Alfonso XI, King of Castilla y León. The territories of Navas are mentioned in it as a hunting spot within the Royal Meadow.

Near the current cemetery the remains of an ancient hunting lodge or fortress, used by King Henry IV of Castile, can be found. This fortified tower, which might be of Muslim origin, already existed back in the 12th century, from which we know that the place was already inhabited by then.

The municipality might have been born as a support to the repopulation of the area, or maybe as protection for some estate or another. The place was inhabited, but it is still way too early to think of it as an urban area, since it was not developed until the late 18th century.

The original name of this municipality was Dehesa de las Navas del Rey, possibly due to the huts designed to keep the livestock, property of the monarch.

In 1306 the territory was donated by Don Sancho Manuel, Infant of Castile, to the Cistercian Monastery of Valdeiglesias, represented in the person of the Abbot Martín I. It was actually during this time that it was populated by livestock huts, which ended up in a lawsuit with San Martín de Valdeiglesias. Because of its low housing density, the municipality eventually became known as ‘Las Casas’.

In 1434, Don Álvaro de Luna, Constable of Castile, bought the municipal area of San Martín from the Convent of Santa María la Real. As a result, la Dehesa de las Navas del Rey was now dependant both legally and administratively on San Martín de Valdeigle-sias, although in religious terms it still belonged to the convent which had sold the land.

In the very same century there was an event that boosted the economic and social development of Navas del Rey; the building of San Juan bridge over the Alberche River, between 1459 and 1460. It is fair to say that the social and economic life of Navas and the surrounding municipalities has always been closely linked to the river.

After the death of Don Álvaro de Luna, executed in Valladolid, the property of the lands of Navas would pass on to different owners, until it finally became a part of the Crown of Castile, of Queen Elizabeth I of Castile, under her jurisdiction. She ordered to knock down the existing fortress, since the castle was often used as dwelling by bandits who used to plunder nearby. Some of the stones that originally formed this building are now part of the fence of the cemetery. The current remains of this construction are now being repaired in cooperation with the Town Council of Navas del Rey by the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage.

Navas was not very populated during the 16th century; yet, its inhabitants were enough for the monastery to designate a house where the monks would collect the rents as tithes in 1555. There were part of the fruits –usually the tenth part– that the congregation used to pay to the church each year.

Navas del Rey and its people had to wait until the 18th century to be given their own curate and perpetual vicarage. It was not until 1770 that the official requests to the archbishopric of Toledo started, asking for Navas’ own parish church and cemetery.

The Convent of Valdeiglesias, receiver of its tithes, opposed the independence of Navas; however, on 16th June, 1774, the munici-pality was finally granted its requests. Some years later, in 1789, the chaplain of Navas’ parish, echoing the requests of the neighbours of the village, wrote again to the Archbishop of Toledo, asking for the territorial division of San Martín de Valdeiglesias and its subsequent incorporation to the Crown.

It was Ferdinand VII who responded to such request, giving this municipality the status of Villa on 22nd April, 1819, under the name of Navas del Rey. The condition was established that neighbours in the municipality were in charge of building the Town Hall and the local prison in two years. They were also given the faculty to elect ordinary mayors and scribes, as well as for placing a gibbet, pillory and knife and other jurisdictional emblems, and thus not being dependent on San Martín de Valdeiglesias anymore.

After these events, the process of land demarcation in Navas del Rey and San Martín followed. It concluded with heated discus-sions and was definitely closed with a document called ‘Escritura del Convenio y Transacción entre la Villa de San Martín y ésta de Navas del Rey’ (Agreement and Transaction between the municipalities of San Martín de la Vega and Navas del Rey), on 29th April, 1837.

The Cistercian monastery of Valdeiglesias was burnt in 1863, and all its properties were transferred to the State, as well as the assets and territories set in Navas del Rey.

Finally, the Marquis of Santa Elena made some favours to the municipality as donations.

In terms of production, the municipality of Navas del Rey provided fruitful lands, especially for the growing of cereal and vine during that time. Its livestock farming was equally remarkable, in spite of the numerous predators present; a fact that can be proven analys-ing the local place names. During the 19th century, farming activity was mostly based on the growing of cereal, olives and leafy vegetables, and part of its production was exported to Madrid. By this time, the population was around 750 inhabitants; currently, the municipality has approximately 2,700 inhabitants.

Chavela, al este con las localidades de Chapinería y

Colmenar del Arroyo, al sur con Aldea del Fresno y al

oeste con Pelayos de la Presa y San Martín de Valdei-

glesias.

NAVAS DEL REY UN ENTORNO NATURALEl municipio de Navas del Rey se sitúa en el suroeste de la Comunidad de Madrid, en zona de transición entre la Sierra de Guadarrama y la Sierra de Gredos.Dos son los ecosistemas más representativos de Navas del Rey: el encinar sobre arenas y el pinar de pino piñonero. Ambos conforman maravillosos paisajes de gran belleza.No podemos dejar de lado su espectacular fauna, destacando especies únicas y en peligro de extinción como el Águila Imperial o la Cigüeña Negra.El término municipal de Navas del Rey está incluido en la Z.E.P.A nº 56 (Zona de Especial Protección de las Aves).

EMBALSE DE PICADAS Y LA VIA VERDE DEL ALBERCHEEl rio Alberche, tras su salida de Pantano de San Juan vuelve a quedar embalsado en el Dique de Picadas, el cual transcurre encajado entre materiales graníticos de gran dureza y con fuertes pendientes que constituyen la Garganta de Picadas; espacio protegido por la Ley de Protección de Embalses y Zonas Húmedas de la Comunidad de Madrid.La Vía Verde del Alberche en este tramo tiene unos 16 Kms. de longitud y transcurre sobre un antiguo trazado ferroviario del siglo XIX. Un rincón donde podemos disfrutar de un precioso paisaje de ribera y de singular belleza natural.Actualmente es aprovechada como sendero y constituye una interesante alternativa de ocio y deporte.Los paisajes rurales de Navas del Rey tienen el encanto y la belleza de lo autentico, de aquello que no debería perderse nunca.Una interesante opción para disfrutar de estos magníficos parajes, consiste en recorrer las Sendas que hay en el municipio, que son un total de 15, perfectamente transitables, tanto para los aficionados al senderismo como para los aficionados a la bicicleta.

The municipality of Navas

del Rey is located

southwest to the Autono-

mous Region of Madrid,

within the region of the

Basin of the Alberche River.

It is 52 km from Madrid,

and access is reached from

M-501 road. Navas’ area is

around 50 sq. km (5,082

hectares) and an average

height of709 metres above

the sea level. The municipa-

lity of Navas del Rey is

located in a transition area

in between the Guadarrama

and Gredos Mountain

Ranges. In the north it is

bordered by the municipali-

ty of Robledo de Chavela; in

the east it is bordered by Chapinería and Colmenar del

Arroyo; in the south it is bordered with Aldea del

Fressno and in the west by Pelayos de la Presa andSan

Martín de Valdeiglesias.

NAVAS DEL REY A NATURAL ENVIRONMENTThe municipality of Navas del Rey is amid mountains in the southwest of the Community of Madrid, in zone of transition between the Guadarrama and Sierra de Gredos.Two are the most representative ecosystems of Navas del Rey: the grove of evergreen oaks on sands and the pinegrove of stone pine. Both shape wonderful landscapes of great beauty. We cannot leave of side his spectacular fauna, standing out the only species and on verge of extinction like the Imperial Eagle or the Black Stork. The municipal area of Navas del Rey is included in the Z.E.P.A n º 56 (Zone of Special Protection of the Birds).

RESERVOIR OF PICADAS AND GREEN WAY OF THE ALBERCHEThe river Alberche, after his finish of Marsh of San Juan it returns to remain dammed in the Picada’s Dike, which goes fitted between granitic materials with great hardness and great slope that constitute the Picadas’s Throat; protected area by the Protection law of Reservoirs and Humid Zones of the Community of Madrid. The Green Route of Alberche has approximately 16 Kms. of length and pass on a former railway tracing of the 19th century. A corner where we can enjoy a precious Ribera’s landscape and singular natural beauty.Nowadays it is taken advantage as path and constitutes an interesting alternative of leisure and sport. The rural landscape of Navas del Rey has the captivation and the beauty of the authentic thing, for that reason you should never lose it. An interesting option to enjoy these magnificent places, consists of crossing the Paths that exist in the municipa-lity, which they are a total of 15, perfectly passable, as well as the fans of the hiking and the fans of the bicycle.
