Why entrepreneurial school leavers should consider starting a business.

After returning to his old secondary school to advise students on how to succeed in their careers, Inspire Entrepreneur of the Year award winner, Lee Biggins, explains what it takes to make the leap from carpet fitter to business leader:

I didn't get on with the academic side of things when I was a child. I had my mind set on joining the family carpet fitting business. Doing well at school was not a priority – getting my foot on the career ladder was. I left school at 16 and didn't look back.

After a few years of working for my father, I became restless and started looking for something new. This was the late Nineties – the process of job hunting was not as easy as it is these days. I realised there was a gap in the market for an accessible, easy to use job board*. Thus, CV-Library was born.

I am a firm believer in entrepreneurship and making your own opportunities. I used my time in education as a money making exercise. From setting up a local car washing empire to selling cold drinks to fishermen on hot days, I was always looking for opportunities to make some pocket money. The worst thing I did for money was set up and take down the stalls at a local market, getting up at 4 am and waiting around the whole day until trading ended. Because I was making money, therefore I thought it a good use of my time.

Looking back, I can honestly say that the most important thing is figuring out where you want to go in life. If you're academically minded then great, but if not then there are still loads of options out there for you. I've discovered that there are routes to success which don't just revolve around the grades you achieve.

If I could go back to school and start again, I would go out of my way to ask for career advice. I recently took part in an interview day at my old secondary school, helping to teach pupils about interview techniques and job applications. This wasn't done when I was growing up. I wish I'd had the opportunity to speak with business leaders and gain some insight into the working world.

I would push myself to get more from the school experience. There were a whole host of extracurricular activities I could have tried, which would

have given me a rounder skill set. Working harder in IT and Business Studies would have given me a greater understanding of the technical and functional elements of running a company. No one explained how these subjects could have a real life application outside of the classroom – if I had known then what I know now, I would have tried very hard to strengthen my skills in those areas.

My advice for anyone looking to start their own business is: research your idea and make sure there is a niche; be prepared to work alongside your growing business for as long as necessary and develop a keen interest in the news and any industry you're interested in – these days it's easy to keep up with business developments on social media sites. Try to make as many industry contacts as possible, and keep track of opportunities which relate to your interests.

My most important piece of advice is: don't beat yourself up about your grades at school. Academia is not the be-all and end-all – look at Richard Branson. Yes, try your hardest, but also cultivate extracurricular interests. With the right ingredients – motivation, business sense, a great idea and industry contacts – you can succeed in the world of business.

SECTION B: SUMMARY QUESTION 2 You want to become an entrepreneur and you did some research on the steps to become a successful entrepreneur. Read the extract (TEXT C) below and write a list of SEVEN tips on how to become an entrepreneur. INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Your summary must be written in point form. 2. List SEVEN points in full sentences using NO MORE than 70 words. 3. Number your sentences from 1 to 7. 4. Write ONE point per sentence. 5. Use your own words as far as possible. 6. Indicate the number of words you have used in brackets at the end of your summary. TEXT C

You can be an entrepreneur in just about any area. However, you will have to pick a

field to work in and business to start. Find a business that won’t only be successful,

but also something that you are passionate about.

You don’t need to have any formal education to be an entrepreneur, but that doesn’t

mean you should ignore education entirely. If you want to start a technolgy company,

experience in business, computer programming and marketing could all be valuable.

Before you begin, you need a business plan. A business plan lays out the objectives

you have as well as the strategy for achieving those objectives.

The age, gender, income, race and culture of your target group will play an important

role in the kind of business you start. Research which group best fits your business

model, and then gear everything to attract them.

While networking is important in all fields, it may be most important to entrepreneurs.

Networking is how you meet other people that might have skills you can use in your

business.

Consumers want products, but they don’t always know which product to pick. You

have to convince people that whatever you’re selling is the best option available.

You’ll have to find out what makes your product unique and then sell it.

You should be focused on marketing before, during and after you start your

business. Marketing is tricky, but you should focus your marketing efforts on your

target audience. https://www.learnhowtobecome.org/entrepreneur/
