Dear All,
“If you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.” – Roald Dahl
It’s amazing what good thoughts can do to a person. When you think positively, that energy expands from within you and this glow inspires others. Your thoughts spread energy; and next week we are encouraging all to choose happy energy. So, please spread this positive attitude around our school next week by sharing your thoughts on what makes our school special for you.
As well as celebrating St. Valentine’s Day, we are taking this opportunity to reach out and learn more about the ongoing work of Speransky Children’s Charity.
The mission of the foundation is to create conditions for the effective treatment and rehabilitation of chil-dren-patients of Children's Clinical Hospital №9. They provide medical and psychosocial rehabilitation for the children in their care. They also see it as an important goal to draw attention to the problem of burn in-jury and to create a supportive environment for children affected by burns, both within the hospital and after discharge.
So remember on Thursday to ‘Think Pink’ and welcome our friends from Speransky to our school for an as-sembly on the work they do for children in need.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend

Happy New Year to all of our Chinese families! We have had great fun making dragons for the
celebrations and models of pigs to celebrate the Year of the Pig. We were also able to finally
‘pop’ our string balloon models to see how they looked. The children were fascinated by the
changing shapes and noises that the balloons made as the air came out of them and the
balloons shrank. They will be a fantastic addition to our ‘b,b,b’ display!

Happy New Year from Reception. On Monday, we had a very special visitor. It was Robin’s mum, Nan-
cy! She taught us about Chinese New Year (also known as the Lunar New Year). We learnt about the
tradition of handing out red envelopes as a sign of good fortune for the year ahead. As Nancy and
Robin handed out the envelopes, we wished them a Happy New Year and a year of good fortune in
Chinese. She also taught us a song, the ancient tale of Nian and the reason why people wear red and
light fire crackers. It was fascinating. In class we have been doing Chinese themed activities to extend
our learning. We are recreating The Great Wall of China, making shape dragons and pig themed
crafts. As well as this, we went on a wonderful trip to Kidzania and wrote all about it when we got back.

This week in Literacy the children have been writing sentences using capital letters and full stops. They
have planned and written their own sentences about ‘The Man on the Moon’. In Maths, Year 1 have
been learning how to count in 10’s, 5’s and 2’s. They have located a number pattern on their 100 chart
counting on or back in 10’s. We had a lot of fun in Art this week making many colorful decorations for
Chinese New Year. Miranda came to school in her traditional Chinese costume.
Year 1
A giant beanstalk has sprouted in the Year 2 classroom! We have been reading the story of
Jack and the Beanstalk! We celebrated Chinese New Year on Tuesday and Tina taught us how
to say Happy New Year in Chinese! In assembly, the children heard a story about how the
twelve animals were chosen for the calendar. We wrote our own version of the story in Eng-
lish lessons. In Maths, Year 2 have been working hard to learn multiply by 6 tables and to tell
the time on the clock. Keep up the great work Year 2!

This week we have had another fantastic week in Year 3. In Science we have explored convex
and concave surfaces, and have had fun drawing our reflections that we saw in the different
surfaces. In art this week, we completed our project, where we recreated Banksy’s
famous portrayal of ‘A Girl with a Red Balloon’. All students created fantastic pieces, using
collage, and we cannot wait to put them on display for all to see.
During this week, Year 4 pupils tested the melting and setting speeds of different kinds of
chocolate to decide which one is best to decorate cupcakes. We melted milk, white and dark
chocolate in a glass bowl over a pot of boiling. We measured the time each kind of chocolate
took to melt (become liquid), and then measured the time the chocolate took to set (become
solid) on a plate. As the dark chocolate did not melt properly, we will repeat this part of the
experiment in the hope that it works this time. The part of the experiment we enjoyed the
most was eating the chocolate! Delicious!

Year 5 has continued to enjoy Design and Technology lessons, when exploring the origins of
pizza—we made six pizzas using various different ingredients. In Art, we had fun painting and
making 3D koi fish as part of some artwork for Chinese New Year. In Literacy, we’ve furthered
our novel study of Oranges in No Man’s Land, and science lessons have seen us designing a
fair test to investigate saturation levels in mixtures. What a busy week we’ve had!
Year 5
As well as making pizzas with Year 5 this week, Year 6 have also been reviewing their
knowledge of 2D shapes. They have discussed the angles in different triangles and also
investigated to check that all angles in every quadrilateral equals 360 degrees. We are all
ready for our mathematics and reading assessments next week.

On Wednesday, Reception went to Kidzania. When we were there it did not feel like they were chil-
dren at all. Reception class spent the day spraying water hoses to put out fires as
firefighters, inspecting people’s mouths as dentists, x-raying dogs as vets, wrapping bandages as
doctors and decorating cats as artists. We got to explore a wide range of professions so that we
could see how people help us and we could think about what we would like to do when we grow up.
It was fantastic to see Reception class working in teams together and being independent without
adults.
“What did you think of Kidzania?” asked Miss Abi.
“Kidzania was wonderful” Hibiki said excitedly.
“Kidzania was great” replied Robin.
“Kidzania was fantastic” Sonia Mi said happily.
What a fun, exciting and educational school trip!
