FromMarley MacDougall, Vice President of Programming:

Chris Young

This year, an important focus of EIRA expanding our programming in hopes ofreaching a greater portion of the Emory community. In the Fall, we kicked off ourprogramming with speaker Chris Young, Executive Director of CIFAL Atlantaand an Associated UNITAR fellow. Mr. Young has a close relationship withEIRA, which allowed for a stimulating discussion regarding the world ofinternational relations and current events; the perfect setting of the stage for eventsto come.

World Week 2015This year, World Week took place the week of October fifth, and played host to avast array of events. The week kicked off with a political panel between theYoung Democrats of Emory and the College Republicans, where they discussedthe issues of foreign policy that each group felt would play a large role in the 2016presidential elections. The next evening, the Canadian Consul General, LouiseBlais, and Political and Economic Director, Ash Miller, joined us to discuss thecomplex relationship between Canada and the United States. After tabling atWonderful Wednesday, where we raised diversity awareness by having studentsmark where they were from on a world map, we enjoyed a religious round table. The Hindu Student Association, Catholic Student Union, Emory Buddhist Club,Emory Hillel, Muslim Student Association, and the Baha’i of Metro Atlanta cametogether to discuss the effects of globalization on religion in the home country andabroad. We concluded the week the following evening with a film screening ofthe United Nations film “Beyond Right and Wrong” in conjunction with theAtlanta Chapter of the United Nations Association of America. Following thefilm, we enjoyed asking panelists, both from inside and outside of the Emorycommunity, about their personal experience with genocide and their thoughts onthe future of current international conflicts. World Week 2015 was anenlightening week of programming that played host to hundreds of students acrossthe Emory community and demonstrated the growth of the relationship betweenEIRA and the greater community as a whole.

We are looking forward to an evening of logic games with Blueprint LSATPreparation in the coming weeks, as well as a community service project withTreesAtlanta to wrap upour semester.

From the Secretary General:MUNE, Model United Nations at Emory, has grownexponentially in the four years since its inception. This year, our main goal is to reach out to the MUNcommunity and establish MUNE as a continuouspresence in the Model UN circuit. Well known MUNschools like the University of Chicago team andMcGill University have expressed interest in attendingthis year. We anticipate about 200 delegatesparticipating, from schools all over the countryreaching as far as the West Coast and Canada. Withten solid committees including a joint crisiscommittee, MUNE IV is geared up to be an exciting, competitive, and fun conference. The committeesrange in themes, dealing with topics like the Xi-LiAdministration to the War of the Roses to theHollywood Blacklist movement. Currently, we haveover 70 eager staffers, ranging from new first years tosenior veterans. Hopefully, this year will cementMUNE as a priority conference for many of thetraveling teams onthe MUNcircuit.

Sincerely,

Fernanda Bernaldo de Quiros
