3. Validation by demonstration: Importance of NAIAD Project
4. Example: Flood risk mitigation and the role of the insurance value of ecosystems
INTRODUCTION OF EIP WATER
Umbrella initiative under the Innovation Union initiative
Connecting 29 Action Groups on different themes focusing in rivers
facilitates the development of innovative solutions to address major European and global water challenges
supports the creation of market opportunities for these innovations, both inside and outside of Europe
supports, through knowledge pooling, joint projects and joint marketplace the implementation of Water
Directive through Common Implementation Strategy
INTRODUCTION OF RIVER RES ACTION GROUP
Mission: to provide a Roadmap to address current policy challenges as opportunities for innovation through river restoration
From theory/policy to practice: holistic view of a contemporary river – „translating“ policies to demonstrable, scalable, bankable solutions/approaches that can be mainstreamed at local, regional and national level

POLICY SETTING – HOW TO MAKE THINGS FIT ?
Current challenges are implementation and innovation – cross sector, interdisciplinary…
a) Improving water quality: knowledge on e.g. riparian vegetation and macro-invertebrates (self-purification ecosystem services in relation to water quality);
b) Prevention against extreme events: (recover the lateral connectivity and floodplain = effective green infrastructure solution to buffer against extreme events)
c) Protection of biodiversity: rehabilitating river systems to restore the natural habitat of aquatic biodiversity.

ACTION LINES
1) develop DSS tools to identify and assess the cost and benefits of river restoration projects, informing and facilitating decision-making, as well as the implementation and monitoring of restoration measures
2) act as a think tank regarding public participation and communication in river restoration in order to identify the barriers that stand in the way of implementing these types of projects, to help identify the right tools, incentives and strategies needed, not only to overcome them but also to involve stakeholders in all stages (design, execution and monitoring)
3) test and demonstrate these DSS Tools, by applying them in specific river restoration projects in demonstration sites in what we call RiverRes Living Labs, located in different European countries.
4) knowledge sharing and capacity building, particularly with the DSS tools developed.

PROJECT NAIAD: NATURE INSURANCE VALUE-ASSESSMENT AND DEMONSTRATION
Objective 1: Synthesis of knowledge; biophysical and socio-economic to deliver a robust informed decision support and planning tool for NBS implementation Objective 2 – Operationalization of the framework to test the theoretical knowledge and upgrade it through testing in real environment, while at the same time codevelop novel financial and business models in support of their implementation and replicability Objective 3 – Policy uptake, communication, dissemination and capacity building to contribute, through financially viable and technically sound NBS informed decision support and planning tools, to socio-economic prosperity and sustainability of natural environment.
