Eilon Caspi; Co-investigator: Chris Mueller. Trajectories Leading to Injurious and Deadly Neglect in Long-Term Care. The study will use qualitative research methods to analyze 265 Minnesota Department of Health’s investigation reports substantiated as neglect in nursing homes and assisted living residences in MN (neglectful incidents resulted in a resident’s serious bodily harm and/or death). Co-PI Secondary qualitative analysis of national CMS state survey citation (F-Tag) nursing home dataset. The data analysis will focus on improving understanding of residents’ fear of retaliation. The study will utilize qualitative research methods to analyze state survey deficiency citation reports to develop a basic characterization (i.e. typologies) of this form of elder maltreatment in nursing homes. The study will also examine the psychological and physical consequences of fear of or actual staff retaliation on residents. Student Investigator: Andrew G. PI. Spring/Summer 2019. Secondary analysis of MDH investigation reports substantiated as drug diversion (thefts of opioid pain medications) in assisted living residences in Minnesota. PI: Eilon Caspi. The data was obtained from MDH through the PI’s Data Practices Request. PI. 2016-2018. Qualitative analysis of the circumstances surrounding the deaths of 105 elders due to resident-to-resident incidents in dementia in long-term care homes. The pilot exploratory study examined over 150 newspaper articles and dozens of death review records. PI: Eilon Caspi. It is the first study in U.S. and Canada on these fatal incidents. 2010 – Project BRAVO (Baycrest Research About Volunteering in Older Adults). The study evaluated volunteers’ perceived benefits gained as a result of volunteering at Baycrest Geriatric Centre. As part of a postdoctoral fellowship, developed and delivered a training program in qualitative interviewing to a group of seven leadership volunteers interviewers.
