Maties saygoodbye tolegend ‘OomKirkie’EUNICE VISAGIE

Today Stellenbosch bids fare-well to a true rugby legend.

Ian Alexander Kirkpatrick“Kirkie” died in his sleep on Sun-day morning at his home in Somer-setWest.Hewas 82 – born inBloem-fontein on 25 July 1930.

A publicmemorial servicewill beheld today at 15:00 at the Danie Cra-ven Stadium.

Oom Kirkie, as he was affection-ately known in Maties rugby cir-cles, was part of South African rug-by for more than six decades.

He came toMaties in 1996 andwasthe coach of the Maties u.19 teamat the time of his death.

He coached Maties till 2001 whenhe was 70 and then in 2005 joinedforceswithCheanRoux for the firstever Varsity Cup. He was 75 at thatstage.

Belius Potgieter, manager at Ma-ties Rugby, said that Oom Kirkie’sdeath rocked the whole rugby com-munity.

“In my opinion he is, apart fromDok Craven, the biggest legend ofSouth African rugby. I admired hisknowledge of the game and his waywith players.”

Roux who played under Kirk-patrick said that Kirkie’s ability tomake aplayer believe inhimself sethim apart from the rest.

“When he came to Maties I wasno where. And he took me andmade me believe in myself. For

him it didn’t matter if you were aSpringbok or a player that camefrom a very small school. He had apassion for the game and made eve-ry player believe in himself.”

As a player, Kirkpatrick made 13testappearances for theSpringboksbetween 1953 and 1961. His debutwas at flyhalf against Australia atNewlands in 1953, but he most fre-quently appearedas centre, touringNew Zealand (1956) and the UK andFrance (1960-61) and making 43Springbok appearances in all.

“SouthAfricanrugbyhas lost oneof its greatest influences. Hewas anincredible coach and friend to someof South Africa’s greatest playersbut,what set himapart,was the factthat he gave every player the sameattention,” said Jurie Roux, SARUCEO and former chairman at Mat-

ies Rugby.“He was an incredibly humble

man whose passion for the gameand playing it in the right wayshone through ineverythinghedid.Stellenbosch and South Africanrugby have lost one of its greats.”

A close friend and historic rugbywriter Paul Dobson was one of thefirst to pay tribute to Kirkpatrick.

“It is hard to find a greater contri-bution to South African rugby thanKirkie’s. He had a passion for it,based on the firmest of principleswhich led Craven to call him theMule. Like Craven, anything op-posed to the best interests of rugbywas an anathema.”

Kirkpatrick is survived by hiswife Norma, children Richard,Bridget, Alexander and Ian and fivegrandchildren.

The family of a Stellenbosch man whodied after awall had collapsed onhimin Somerset West earlier this month,

laid a charge of theft after awedding bandwentmissing in the Stellenboschmorgue.

Morris van Zyl was one of two men whodied when a wall collapsed on them at a resi-dence in Somerset West on 5 November.Twoothermenwerealso injuredintheacci-

dent and had to be airlifted to the MediclinicVergelegen.According to his brother, Steve van Zyl, an

autopsy had to be performed as he had diedof unnatural causes.“TheautopsywasconductedonWednesday

(7November)andwewererequestedto identi-fy him. A friend of the family offered to dothis, soasnot toputus throughanymoreemo-tional turmoil.“When he left for the mortuary in Stellen-

bosch, my brother’s wife asked him to ask forhis wedding band.”According to Van Zyl, their friend complet-

ed the identificationandaskedabout thering,but was told that the ring was too tight andcould not be removed from his hand.Theythendecidedtoleavetheringandbury

him with it.“I felt very uncomfortable about the situa-

tion and my gut told me to check on the ring.I called the undertaker and requested hecheck my brother’s finger to ensure the wed-

ding band was still on his finger.“He then told me he had taken fingerprints

that morning and that there was no ring onhishandswhenhereceivedmybrother’sbodyfrom the mortuary.“He also told me he could see where they

had forced the band from my brother’s fin-ger.”When Van Zyl enquired about the missing

ring, a man at the mortuary told him that theringcouldnotberemovedand that ithadbeenleft on the finger of the deceased.“I was told that he would speak to his col-

leagues and that he would get back tome thatday.” He never returned the call.“When I called again, he told me that they

had found it, and we sent someone to collectit from the mortuary.”Van Zyl spoke to some friends that told him

they also had a ring that went missing at thismortuary.The family also enquired about the man

who had died in the same accident as Morris.“The undertaker received a call to ask that

we collect his bank cards and cash. We sentmy niece and her grandmother to collect thecards and cash as we wanted to hand it to hisnext of kin. When they arrived at the mortu-ary, the cards were in the wallet, but the cashwas missing.”VanZylhasopenedacaseof theft at theStel-

lenbosch police station.According to police spokesperson Lt Na-

talieMartin, theyare investigating theallega-tions of theft.

CASE POSTPONED: The five men accused of four counts of armed robbery after various shops in Stellenbosch were targeted earlier this year, appeared in court on Wednesday. The case was postponed until 4 December when one of the accused will apply forbail. Die Drakenstein-munisipaliteit isvanjaar weer as die groenste muni-sipaliteit in die Wes-Kaap gekroon.

Dié munisipaliteit het in 2011 ook die titelgehou.Die Wes-Kaapse departement vir omge-

wingsakeenontwikkelingsbeplanninghetdietoekenningseremonie vir die jaarlikseGroen-ste Munisipaliteit-kompetisie Woensdagaandop Elsenburg gehou.Sowat 17 uit 24 Wes-Kaapse munisipaliteite

het aan die 2012-kompetisie deelgeneem.Die kompetisie het ten doel om dienslewe-

ring te verbeter, gemeenskapstrots te bevor-der en ’n omgewing te bewerkstellig waar diegemeenskap en munisipaliteite beter kansaamwerk om na die omgewing om te sien.Beoordelaars het die deelnemende munisi-

Fransman: ‘BRICSmembershiphasa lot tooffer’SAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG

To boost job creation, support African in-frastructure development and to partnerwith other southern key players on issuesof global governance.

These are, according to the deputy ministerof International Relations and Cooperation,Marius Fransman, the three objectives ofSouth Africa’s membership in BRICS.

BRICSis thegroupingof theworld’s leadingemerging market economies, namely Brazil,Russia, India, China and South Africa, andaimstopromotedevelopmentcooperation, se-curity, peace and establishing a more equita-ble and fair world. South Africa became a

member in December 2010.Fransman delivered a public lecture on

BRICS and what South Africa can gain fromits membership, at the Stellenbosch Universi-ty on Wednesday morning.

According to Fransman, issues surround-ing foreign policy must be demystified inSouth Africa.It is difficult for those on groundlevel to understand that “we live in an inter-connectedsociety”where thatwhichhappensinternationally, affects the country and thoseliving in it. This is something that his depart-ment would like to address.

Fransman referred to the negativity whichexisted when South Africa first joined BRICS.The rationale behind South Africa’s involve-ment is, however, that it will enable the coun-

try to attract or make linkages betweenemerging economies and Africa. “Africa is atthe centre of our policy,” he said.

With regards to opportunitiesbecoming available, Fransmansaid it must be asked if South Af-rica isreadytomakeuseof them.He mentioned the partnershipagreement between South Afri-ca and China as an example,where, when the textile industrywas under serious pressure, theagreement wasn’t utilised prop-erly by South Africa.

The 5th BRICS Summit will behosted in Durban in March 2013and the establishment of a

BRICS development bank is under considera-tion. “The prophets of doom told us not to joinBRICS and we showed them wrong. Our next

responsibility now is to fight forintegrity in the agreement.”

He asked the academic com-munity to not just raise issuesabout the country’s membershipwith BRICS, but to support it aswell. A dedicated BRICS think-tank, comprising academic com-munity to help them with issues,is being mooted. “Our member-ship with BRICS has a lot to offer.The table has now been set. Wehave to decide how we will usethese opportunities.”

Farewell tolegendaryOomKirkieThe death of South African rugby legendIan Kirkpatrick – more affectionatelyknown as Oom Kirkie – brought the real-isation that even though we are all meremortals, we have the ability to be muchmore.

As the saying goes: “We are all equal,but not the same.”

Oom Kirkie changed the lives of manyMaties rugby players, supporters andadministrators in his time at MatiesSport.

He already started changing lives andperceptions even before coming toMaties in 1996.

He owed much of his eminence to hisreputation as an outstanding coach andmentor to generation after generation ofSpringbok players, as well as for his con-tribution to non-racial rugby.

In 1970 he led the rugby team of Gri-qualandWest toarguablythemostunex-pected victory in the Currie Cup’s histo-ry when he coached his childhood prov-ince to an 11–9 victory over NorthernTransvaal.

He took over the coaching of theSpringboks for their 1974 tour of France– an expedition which helped overcomethe shock of their series defeat to theBritish & Irish Lions in the same year.

In 1978 he joined the recently formedSA Rugby Board as their director ofcoaching and once again his influencewas felt.

Together with coaches such as AbeWilliams, Piet Kellerman and DougieDyers, Kirkie established coachingprojects and non-racial teams and com-petitions to give life to the slogan of DrDanie Craven, the SARB president: “Wewill change South Africa on the rugbyfield”.

My mosie het basies gevra dat ons na ’nbeleid kyk om die omstandighede op ons

plase te verbeter.Ek stel ook voor dat ons ondersoek instel

na alle moontlike vergrype en uitdagingsop die plase, veral op ons eie gronde wat uit-verhuur word.

Nog ’n uitdaging is die alternatiewe huis-vesting in die dorpsareas, maar die werkersis nie eienaars nie.

Ek verwys na kommentaar deur ’n raadslidin die Eikestadnuus van 10 November 2012,veral die volgende stelling:

“Hierdie tipe besluitneming plaas die inte-griteit van die Raad en sy komitees in ge-drang.”

Dié stelling kom voor in ’n omvattende me-dedeling van raadslid Hendrikse oor sekerebesluitevandieStellenboschmunisipaleraadse vergadering van 25 Oktober 2012. Hy be-weer onder meer dat die DA-koukus deur bui-testanders beïnvloed is.

Natuurlik is dit in orde dat raadslede metkundiges en buitestaanders konsulteer teneinde hulle in staat te stel om ingeligte beslui-te te kan neem. Vir my klink dit verregaandedat beweer kan word dat ons DA-raadsledehulle onregmatig laat beïnvloed het. Ek hoophulle versoek die speaker van die raad omhierdie aangeleentheid te laat ondersoek.

Die integriteit van die raad moet bo verden-king wees en ons as kiesers moet daaroor geentwyfel hê nie.

Moontlik was dit raadsaam vir Eikestad-nuus om voor publikasie van die aantygingsdeur ’n raadslid wat duidelik ontevrede is,meer inligting te bekom.

Terloops die besluite van die raad waarnaraadslid Hendrikse verwys, is na my meningverstandig, nodig en goed. Dit is my eie me-ningenekisdeurniemandbeïnvloedomhier-die standpunte in te neem nie.

From the vineyard and traffic-fringedstoep of Dimi’s Dorp Street bistro we leftStellenbosch on a job and soul search.

Thejob,apotentialupgradingofanexist-ing hunting lodge on theSouth African/Botswanaborder, was a fairlystraightforward goal inthese trying economictimes. The soul searchwas a more personal mat-ter. I had a specific placein mind.

There is a grove of typi-cal homestead trees in theveld outside Groblers-hoop. They stand tall andgreenly spirited by theriver’s waters, on thenorth bank of the Gariep.Here, just a few kilom-eters east of Kheis Drift,four young men of the Na-tal Light Horse were shotand buried in the hot No-vember of 1914. There is another gravethere. I have not been back since the burialmore than 14 years ago.

InBeaufort-Westwevisitanancientfam-ily member, bright-eyed in a dark oldhouse between an orchard and the street.The stoep is barred. Die eerste uitgawe van die boek is as ’n kul-tuurgeskiedenisboek by die Universiteit Stel-lenbosch voorgeskryf en het ’n regmatige plek

in vele ambassades se kom-buise in die buiteland ge-had.

Renata se dekades-langenavorsing oor die eetkul-tuur van die inheemsemen-se van Suid-Afrika het ooktot ander boeke gelei, naam-lik Funa Food from Africa –Roots of African FoodCultu-re, Koekemakranka: Khoi-Khoin-Kultuurgoed enKom-Kuier-Kos.

“Daar is soveel kultuuragter elke kookkuns. Elkeland het sy eie patrone. Ditis belangrik dat die kook-kunsvandieinheemsemen-se van ons land bewaarword,” sê Renata.

Syverduidelikdatmetdiewêreldwye fokus op volhou-baarheid,tradisionelekook-kuns ook ’n groot rol kanspeel. “Deur van plaaslikeprodukte gebruik te maak,

eerder as omalles in te voer, en terug te beweegna tradisionele, eenvoudige resepte kan ons al-mal tot volhoubaarheid bydra.”

Libertas-koor naDuitslandDie Stellenbosch Libertas-koor, onder lei-ding van prof. Johan de Villiers, vertrekeersdaags op ’n konserttoer na Duitsland.

Hulle sal van 30 November tot 17 Desem-ber in verskeie dorpe in Duitsland optree.

Volgens prof. De Villiers is die doel vandie toer om die koor se musiek aan gehorein Duitsland bekend te stel, met spesialefokus op koormusiek uit eie bodem.

“Terselfdertyd het ons ten doel om as ’nprojek van Ecumenical Foundation ofSouthernAfrica (EFSA), fondse tewerf virMIV/Vigs-programme in Suid-Afrika.”

Die toer is moontlik gemaak deur ’n uit-nodiging van die Beierse regering aan dieStellenbosch Libertaskoor in die gees vandie vriendskapsooreenkoms tussen dieBeierse en Wes-Kaap-provinsies.

“Die inisiatief is verder gevoer deur dr.Renier Koegelenberg, direkteur van EF-SA,met die gevolg dat die Libertaskoor ge-nooi is om Kersfeeskonserte aan te biedvir, onder andere, die Tutzing Akademiein Beiere en die Duitse parlement in Ber-lyn.

“Vanjaar se toer volg op soortgelyke toe-renaDuitsland in 2001 en 2004met ashoog-tepunte ’n uitvoering in 2001 vir presidentJohannes Rau in sy ampswoning SchlossBellevue in Berlyn, asook deelname aan ’ndirekte televisie-uitsending van die Volk-strauertag-herdenking in die Reichstag,Berlyn tydens ons 200-toer.”

Die Libertaskoor wat na Duitsland saltoer, bestaan uit 75 lede vanuit die omge-wing. Dit sluit in Kaapstad, Kampsbaai,Bellville, Durbanville, Parow, Milnerton,

Paarl, Wellington, Athlone, MitchellsPlain,Eersterivier,Somerset-Wes,Strand,Kayamandi, Idasvallei, Cloetesville en ’nhele aantal uit Stellenbosch self.

Prof. DeVilliers sien baie uit na die toer.“Die komende toer is ’n opwindende voor-uitsig vir my en elke koorlid en ons sienindie eersteplekdaarnauit as ’nwonderli-ke geleentheid om ons musiek te deel metgehore in Duitsland.”

Volgens prof. De Villiers word die toerondersteun deur die Evangelische Kirchevon Deutschland (EKD) en dat koorlededikwels op ons toer by huisgesinne uit dieonderskeie Duitse gemeentes gehuisvesword.

“Opdiéwysewordsterkblywendevrien-skapsbande tussen ons koorlede en dieDuitse gashere gesmee.”

Die koor is in 1989 deur prof. De Villiersop die been gebring in ’n tyd in die Suid-Afrikaanse geskiedenis waar veelrassigegroeperings nog buitengewoon was. Diekoor se mandaat is om vrede, welwillend-heid en versoening te bevorder en rasse-en kulturele verdeeldheid te oorkom deur’n gedeelde passie vir musiek.

Die koor semusiek-repertoire reflekteerdie koor se toewyding tot diversiteit, enstrek van groot koorwerke (soosHändel se“Messiah”, die “Elijah” van Mendelssohnen die “Requiems” van Brahms, Mozart,en Verdi, asook Bach se “B Minor Mass”),tot inheemse werke uit Afrika. Die koorstel gehore ook graag bekend aan nuwewerke en inheemsemusiekwaarvoor daarsoms nie eers bladmusiek bestaan nie.

1. Training: A combination of early childhood development, thedevelopment of life skills, conflict management and financialliteracy.

2. Alcohol and drug abuse: Focussed prevention and trainingprogrammes that are measurable, including theatre plays toensure that illiterate persons are also included.

3. Publications (Monthly): Themes must cover alcohol and drugabuse, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.

NOTE: Projects can be funded to a maximum amount ofR250,000-00.The Department reserves the right to approve and fund onlypriority needs in your application.

(B): THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTATION AND INFORMATIONMUST BE SUBMITTED AS PART OF THE APPLICATION:(Please note: Failure to submit this information can lead to thedisqualification of your application.)

1. A fully completed Project Business Plan (compulsory formatprescribed);

2. A fully completed Project Implementation Plan (Annexure A– compulsory format prescribed);

4. Proof of Registration has to be provided in the case of non-profit, non-governmental organisations and Article 21companies;

5. Registered entities have to attach the most recent TaxClearance Certificate.

6. In terms of the Public Finance Management Act the mostrecent verified Financial Statements have to be attached.

(C): CRITERIA FOR THE ALLOCATION OF FUNDS:1. The business plan must clearly describe the project’s

measurable objectives (that address the above-mentionedfocus areas) and the sustainability of the project.

2. The business plan must indicate clearly how (activities),which target groups and how many individuals will benefitfrom the funding.

3. The implementation of the business plan should contribute tothe general social upliftmentof farmworkers, their communitiesand farm worker organisations.

4. Preference will be given to projects focussed on the followingtarget groups as beneficiaries within farm worker communitiesi.e. children, women, youth, disabled and unemployed farmworkers.

5. The applicant must:(5.1) be a legal entity;(5.2) be in existence for at least 3 years and should not have

been deregistered before;(5.3) maintain good financial discipline;(5.4) have administrative support structures in place to

ensure effective and timeous submission of the requiredfinancial and progress reports. Compliance will bemonitored and will determine the release of funds.
