    Synopsis: Harada Takumi (Hayashi Kento) has

    moved to a country town in Okayama or his

    sickly younger brother. He is an extraordinarily

    talented baseball pitcher, but has been unable

    to pitch to his satisaction as he couldnt trust the

    catcher. Nagakura Go (Yamada Kenta), a catcher

    at a childrens baseball team in Okayama, is eager

    to orm a battery duo with Takumi. Their battery

    looked like doing well, however, the diferences

    in technique become apparent when they

    join junior high school, and Takumi suggests

    disbanding the battery.

    The trust between Takumi and Go is restored

    because o the arrangement by Takumis younger

    brother who was desperate to save the duo. But

    that evening, the brother collapses with an illness,

    and the mother blames Takumi or involving thebrother in baseball. Takumi explains the situation

    and withdraws rom a match against a strong

    contestant, but his brother persuades him

    otherwise. The mother realizes Takumis passion

    or baseball, and comes to the pitch or support,

    where Takumi is pitching with all his might.

    Director Takita Yojiro was the rst Japanese

    director to win the Academy Award or Best

    Foreign Language Film or 2008s Departures

    (Okuribito) (Academy Awards given to three

    Japanese directors in the 1950s were special

    awards). The great Sugawara Bunta appeared in

    the Battles Without Honor and Humanity (Jingi

    naki tatakai) series o lms (directed by Fukasaku

    Kinji, 1973-1976). This lm was based on a novel

    by Asano Atsuko, which sold 3.8 million copies.

    Synopsis: A young man, Kaneko Teppei is alsely

    accused o molesting a high-school girl on a train.

    He is arrested and orced to sign a statement thatis not his own words and goes through endless

    court sessions to ght or his reedom. Teppei had

    been working as a reeter, or part-time worker,

    jacket got caught in the door. He struggled to

    ree it, and apologized to the woman next to him

    when he bumped her.

    From out o the crowd a young womans

    voice cried out, but he didnt understand what it

    meant. They were escorted to the station masters

    o ce, ollowed by a woman who wanted to

    vouch or his innocence; the station employee,

    however, shut the door in the womans ace.

    His lawyer, Hamada Akira encourages him

    to settle the matter out o court. I he chooses to

    ght the charges, he will be held or three weeks

    just or the investigation, and i he is prosecuted,

    the case will take up to a year in court.

    The trial begins on a positive note wherein

    the courtroom is packed with riends o Teppeis,

    who successully puts a dent in the policeinvestigation. The judge appears inclined to

    nd Teppei not guilty. At that point in the trial,

    however, a new judge is assigned to the case,

    one ar more skeptical o Teppeis claims o

    innocence.

    The lm is an indictment o Japans troublingly

    labyrinthine legal system, in which deendants

    are coerced into signing conessions and criminal

    cases go on or years, this was Japans o cial

    submission or Best Foreign Language Film or

    the Academy Awards or 2007.

    The lm marks Suo Masayukis return to

    lmmaking ater a decade-long hiatus. His

    previous work was Shall We Dance? (1996),

    an internationally successul comedy starring

    Yakusho Koji and Takenaka Naoto, both o

    whom appear in this lm as well. Kase Ryo is

    amiliar to international audiences as Shimizu

    in Clint Eastwoods Letters rom Iwo Jima (2006,directed by Clint Eastwood). Kase and Motai

    Hirosue Hiromasa, who directed this lm

    2007). His costar Namiki Akie also appeared in

    Wakamatsu Kojis critically acclaimed United Red

    Army (Jitsuroku Rengosekigun, 2007), about the

    let-wing groups disintegration and standof with

    Synopsis: The lm alternates between the past,

    in which the central character, Masaya, narrates

    his lie story, and the present, in which Masaya

    watches his mother die o cancer in the hospital.

    Masaya is a small boy when his parents split up,

    ater his mother Okan (mother in southern

    Japan) tires o his ather Oton (ather) returning

    home drunk. Okan takes him to her hometown,

    Chikuho. One time, his mothers date puts

    quarters in an amusement game or Masaya so

    the man can have a ew moments alone with

    Masayas mother. Visiting his ather is more o

    an adventure; his ather lms him with his home

    camera, and Masaya is let alone in a dressing

    room with cabaret girls who tease him.

    When he goes of to Tokyo or art school,Masaya picks up many o his athers habits:

    drinking, smoking, casual sex, gambling. His

    mother begins running a restaurant to support

    that he ultimately cant aford, and he plays

    mahjong into the night; at one point in the game,

    he sees himsel as a boy seated across rom him.

    From that point on, he starts to grow up: he sends

    his mother a book he has completed, he settles

    down with a single girlriend, Mizue, and when

    it is clear his mothers health is ailing, he has her

    come to Tokyo to live with him.

    Ater she dies, they bring the body home to

    Masayas new house. While his riends make merry

    downstairs, Masaya goes upstairs to work on an

    illustration project beside his mothers body. He

    stops and curls up next to the body in despair.

    Mizue comes up and says that beore she died,

    Okan had said to Mizue that her rst year in Tokyo

    was the best year o her lie, and that Masaya had

    repaid everything she had ever done or him inthat one year. Masaya opens up the box and nds

    a lietimes worth o keepsakes inside. He takes

    her memorial tablet to the top o Tokyo Tower.

    The lm is the third adaptation o Lily Frankys

    runaway bestselling memoir o the same name,

    ater a TV movie and a television series. Kiki Kirin

    and Uchida Yayako, who play Okan at diferent

    stages in her lie, are real-lie mother and daughter.

    Odagiri Jo is one o the most successul young

    actors in Japanese cinema, having appeared in

    lms by Kurosawa Kiyoshi, Aoyama Shinji, and

    Mitani Koki.
