Geographic Information System (GIS)Services:

EIDOS employs GIS technologies to enhance its ability to provide informed planning decisions at a variety of scales including site, community and region. GIS services are built on an ESRI Arc GIS platform and EIDOS employs experienced GIS specialists to work with our clients in designing geospatial data bases and spatial analyses.

SPATIAL ANALYSIS:EIDOS employs a variety of tools and modelling techniques that can be used separatelly or combined to support evidence based decision. GIS and Mapping Services

When conserved or restored as a legacy for future generations, many of our natural landscapes have high intrinsic value. Whether they are conserved natural areas and green corridors or wildlife habitat regions, those landscapes are valuable public assets that need to be developed and protected. Caring for those assets is the role of environmental stewardship.

Increasingly the public and environmental interest groups are de-manding protective designations, careful assessment and manage-ment, and appropriate low-impact use management of landscapes. Stewardship plans, therefore, are based on principles of landscape ecology and ecological restoration best practices, and important activities include the preparation of management plans and ecologi-cal site restoration plans. EIDOS has collaborated with professional biologists, historians, graphic designers, and others to establish and achieve stewardship goals. We have also been successful in engaging public groups and private organizations and getting them involved in conservation and restoration planning of sensitive natural areas. A vital part of ongoing protection of the landscape is to have an educated public. As part of our leadership role, we have worked toward creating an educated public who, in turn, become the guardians of their own landscapes. EIDOS offers a combination of nature-based planning and implementation skills that are suited to developing stewardship plans that successfully restore and protect environmental assets for the future.

EIDOS is routinely called upon by clients to develop and facilitate consultation processes as part of its planning and design assign-ments.

EIDOS works closely with its clients to tailor processes which pro-vide a meaningful and effi cient way to engage the public and key stakeholders on the opportunities and challenges facing communi-ties as they move forward.

The fi rm has employed informal open houses, public meetings, workshops, and charrettes - intensive sessions where community members work hand in hand with professionals to generate plan-ning and design concepts. The fi rm supplements these processes with key person interviews, as well as questionnaires and surveys.

Beaver Hills Tourism DevelopmentOpportunity Assessment

The Beaver Hills Tourism Development Opportunity Assessment was commissioned by Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation (ATPR) in collaboration with the Beaver Hills Initiative (BHI), astakeholder group which includes the fi ve rural municipalities in the region, Elk Island National Park, the University of Alberta, ATPR, academia industry, and non government organizations (NGO’s).

EIDOS and RC Strategies Inc were retained in 2010 to develop the. Assessment, which provides a proposed vision for tourism development in one of the most unique regions of North Ameri-ca. It sets the stage for the ongoing protection and sustainable tourism and recreation management of an area which is under consideration as an International Biosphere Reserve under the Man and Biosphere Program (MAB) of the United Nations Education, Scientifi c and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The forested region, rich in wetlands, wildlife and protected Park areas, faces unprecedented land use demands from all sectors including recreation, conservation, industry, agriculture, and both urban and rural residential. Recreation and tourism use of the area is growing and will likely increase as the regional market moves from 1.0 million to a predicted 1.5 million residents over the next twenty years.

The project’s objective was to identify appropriate opportunities for tourism development in the Beaver Hills but retaining the unique natural ecosystem and landscape character of the area while adhering to the values of nature based tourism. Specifi c objectives were to identify:• the market demands, trends and potential tourism types and

associated opportunities• for development• opportunities to diversify the rural economy• opportunities to expand the tourism season into shoulder

seasons• gaps in the current tourism products and services offered

The proposed vision and examples of potential tourism develop-ment adhere to the values of Beaver Hills stakeholders and, in fact, are a result of their direction, input and review as the Assessment unfolded over a fi ve month period commencing in October of 2010.

Capital Region River Valley Park Plan Capital Region, Alberta

The Plan of Action for the Capital Region River Valley Park is a plan for a world-class metropolitan river front park that would extend from the Town of Devon, through the Counties of Leduc and Park-land, City of Edmonton, and through the Counties of Sturgeon and Strathcona to the City of Fort Saskatchewan.

EIDOS led a team of multi-disciplinary professionals that re-searched the environmental, hydrological, geological, historical and human elements that reflect the ‘living landscape’ of the river valley.

Building upon a previous concept plan, the team redesigned trail alignments, location of walkways and pedestrian bridges, new park areas and other amenities to maximize the preservation of the natural features within the valley and to protect environmentally sensitive areas.

The plan is based upon the principles of preservation, protection and enhancement of our river valley resource. The draft plan was divided into seven planning segments to accommodate the distinc-tive features and attributes of the valley. Each segment recognizes the uniqueness of its planning area and proposes actions that are appropriate for the specific locale.

An award winning landscape architect, with over 30 years experience, Robert’s work focuses on large scale planning and implementation assign-ments as a process manager and team leader. Types of projects include resource assessments, infrastructure, green spaces and environmental stewardship projects. Robert enjoys interdisciplinary team projects where he can provide leadership and broaden the dialogue to achieve solutions that not only address internal measures of success, but also broader societal perspectives.

His expertise in environmental and stewardship planning stems from exten-sive studies and project undertakings. Bob’s ability to integrate biophysical, social, design and construction elements has led to a series of comprehen-sive, interdisciplinary environmental impact assessment studies. Projects have also included land stewardship plans, ecological restoration plans and constructed wetlands for sensitive landscapes.

Robert has a well developed capability to translate 3-dimensional concepts into constructed reality. This is evident in large and small projects including Riel Park and Woodlands Parks for St. Albert, the U of A Transit Mall (89 Avenue), Athabasca University, and the Sulphur Valley Rehabilitation (CSLA Award). His detailed design and implementation experience ensures that projects under his purview are cost effective, functional, environmen-tally responsive, and visually pleasing.

Community consultation is often a necessary to a project. Robert has been involved in various consultation techniques including newsletters, surveys, public open houses, and public meetings. Key examples are Red Willow Park and various EIA’s.

Robert is passionate about his profession and how it must address the environmental challenges of the future.

Her GIS education includes courses taken in Brazil, Spain and US, while pursuing her Master degrees. Ross McTaggart has over a decade of experience working in the graphic arts industry previous to his undertaking formal schooling to become a Landscape Architect Technologist (LAT). He was born and raised in the Bow Valley Corridor section of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. This upbringing developed his love for nature and understanding of the need to preserve it.

The expansion that occurred in the region due to the 1988 Olympic Winter Games was a clear indication to him that while development of these sensi-tive areas was necessary, it must be done in a sustainable manner. It was this wish to use his design skills toward forwarding environmentally smart design concepts which prompted him to seek out EIDOS as an employer.

Ross has several years of construction fi eld experience. Working for a va-riety of general contractors has given him the ability to create construction details with the understanding of where issues may arise in the implemen-tation of the design in the fi eld.

Ross’s years of industry experience managing multi-location, multi-disciplinary, multi-media projects for clients such as NASA , RCMP, DND/CF brings expertise to EIDOS in many areas that are in keeping with his current duties as a Landscape Architectural Technologist. Ross has been directly involved in a number of large and multi-disciplined projects encom-passing many facets of design and stages of development.

Geographic Information Systems:

GIS technologies allow Ross to combine database design and manipula-tion experience with graphic art and multimedia knowledge. Using rigid data study design, collection and manipulation to ensure data integrity, Ross brings a unique perspective to the modeling methodology development process. Believing attainable sustainability is created through informed decision making, based on data driven scenario comparison. The ability to create target based data representations in static, interactive, or presentation media allows him to be conscious of the fi nal portrayal of scenarios during the initial data design phases.
