Eid ul Fitr is an Islamic festival that is joyously celebrated by Muslims all over the world to mark the completion of the holy month of fasting. Eid is an occasion of joy, thanksgiving and generosity.

“O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, so that you may develop Taqwa (consciousness of Almighty, self-restraint)” [Qur’an 2:183]

Fasting means abstinence from food, drink and sex from dawn

until dusk.

“The month of Ramadan is that in which the Qur'an was revealed, a guidance for people and clear proofs of the guidance and the Criterion (between right and wrong…)” [Qur’an 2:185]

5As the Day of Eid Approaches...Zakat al Fitr, the end-of-Ramadan charity becomes due as the month of Ramadan draws to a close.

“The Messenger of Allah enjoined Zakat-ul-Fitr on those who fast to shield them from any indecent act or speech, and for the purpose of providing food for the needy. It is

accepted as Zakah for the one who pays it before the Eid prayer, and it is sadaqah for the one who pays it after the prayer.” [Sunan Abu Dawud]

Note: Zakat Al Fitr charity is different from the Zakat ul Mal charity that financially able Muslims have to pay on surplus wealth and possessions. More info on http://www.islamicity.com/mosque/Zakat/

“Allah is great, Allah is great. There is no god but Allah. Allah is great, Allah is great. And all praises are for Allah.”

Offering special prayers in congregations

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: “The Prophet went out and offered a two Rakat prayer on the Day of Eid ul Fitr…” [Sahih Bukhari, Volume 2, Book 15, Number 104]

Dressing up in the best clothes Narrated Jabir said: “The Prophet had a Jubbah (long cloak) that he would wear on Eid and on Fridays.” Al-Bayhaqi reported that

Ibn Umar used to wear his best clothes on Eid.

Extending greetingsAt the time of the Prophet when people met one another on the day of

Eid, they would say, ‘Taqabbal Allahu minnaa wa minka’ (May Allah accept from us and from you our good deeds) [Ibn Hajar]

8Eid: Pay Day!Eid is a day when Allah showers His mercy, His blessings and His forgiveness on His bondsmen.

It is the day when wages are paid tothe dutiful servants of the Creator:

those who engaged only in things that were permissible

those who restrained themselves from things that are forbidden

those who showed gratitude and humility, sharing and caring.
