FIXED WIRE TESTING
Fixed Wiring Testing (FWT) is a popular phrase used to describe an Electrical Installation
Condition Report (EICR) formerly called Periodic Inspection Report (PIR).
The two main dangers associated with electricity are the risk of shock and the possibility
of fire. Over time those risks are increased because installations deteriorate due to age and
normal wear and tear.
EIAT offers a total Electrical Compliance Service.
n We work closely with the Duty Holders to create a testing strategy appropriate
to the risk presented.
n Our engineers are not only qualified but time served electricians experienced in
identifying electrical faults and defects.
n All testing will be to BS7671 standards stringently adhering to up-to-date
regulations and legislation.
n Circuits are checked so that in the event of a fault, the wiring and the protective
device (circuit breaker or fuse) will provide the correct protection to ensure the
safety of any persons or property within the scope of the installation.
n Any C1 faults identified posing imminent danger will be reported immediately to the Duty
Holder in writing and advice given that remedial action must be taken without delay.
n You will receive a comprehensive complete EICR with a full schedule of circuits and
listed observations and recommendations which will include any defects or deviations
from the British Standard.

Our risk-based approach, in line with current regulations ensures that our clients receive a
comprehensive compliance solution which is cost-effective and sustainable whilst reducing
the risk of future faults or accidents.

REMEDIAL REPAIRS
Fixed Wire Testing is only part of the electrical safety compliance requirement. Once the
FWT has been completed you will receive a report of the remedial works required.
Faults identified in the EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) are given codes:
n Code C1 faults require urgent attention - danger present – immediate repair.
n Code C2 faults require attention - potential danger – unsatisfactory condition.
n Code C3 faults are an improvement recommended.
In the event that essential remedial work is not completed within the time-frame appropriate
to the fault coding following FWT then the organisation could be culpable of fault and
negligence, the premises insurance could be compromised and the Duty Holder could be
proven to be liable.
EIAT works closely with the Duty Holder to:
n Analyse, explain and discuss the results of the EICR.
n Plan and create a tailored electrical remedial repairs schedule.
n Liaise with you to plan the most convenient timing to complete the work with minimal
disruption and down time.
n Carry out the repair certifying that the works meet BS 7671: 2008 (2011) requirements.

Keeping your electrical system well maintained will help reduce the risk of non-compliance
and costly system downtime and repair. Our electrical repair and maintenance work will
ensure that your electrical systems are safe, fit for purpose and compliant.

ELECTRICAL THERMAL IMAGING
Thermal Imaging or thermography (hot spot testing) is the process of using a
special camera designed to look only for heat by way of infra-red (IR) energy waves.
By detecting anomalies often invisible to the naked eye, thermal imaging has evolved
into one of the most cost effective and valuable diagnostic tools for both predictive and
preventive electrical maintenance.
Speed of operation coupled with the fact that thermal imagers do not require contact
with the circuits or electrical components, has the advantage that they can be used when
the system is under load thus giving a true picture of the working load and therefore
temperature under load.
By reviewing thermal images of equipment, decisions to either repair or replace equipment
become more effective by increasing equipment reliability and overall costs reduction.
The regular testing of electrical systems is of the utmost importance, particularly when
excessively high running costs or downtime could be detrimental to the business.
Thermal cameras are an extremely efficient, effective, versatile tool:
n For testing electrical systems for excessive heat, damaged components, and ensuring
overall system safety and efficiency.
n Instant fault diagnosis e.g. loose connections, corroded joints, overloads, phase
imbalances, high resistance in fuses and switchgear, worn parts and insulation
resistance breakdown.
n Identifying the severity of the problem and necessary remedial action required.
n Early stage remedial action can save both time and money.

If it is impractical for your business to shut down the electrical supply to carry out fixed wire
testing then this non-disruptive, electrical testing service is for you!

PORTABLE APPLIANCE TESTING
Portable Appliance Testing or PAT is an essential part of any electrical compliance
programme to ensure that all appliances are safe to use.
The Health & Safety Executive states that 25% of all reportable electrical accidents involve
portable appliances. All electrical items have the ability to short fuse, overheat and in the
worst case scenario, spark or cause a fire.
Many Duty Holders are unaware of the insurance implications of not having an up-to-date
PAT programme in place. Failure to carry out the necessary tests may result in your insurance
company refusing to pay out in the unfortunate circumstances of an accident or fire.
n At EIAT all of our test engineers are qualified to City and Guilds 2377.
n Every appliance including lead and plug is inspected visually for damage,
correct use and suitability.
n We use computerised test instruments to carry out Portable Appliance Tests.
Fast, reliable and extremely accurate with the ability to record test results in a
downloadable format, they are safe to use with sensitive IT equipment.
n Minor remedial work can be carried out at the time of testing including replacing
fuses and rewiring plugs to maximise first time PASS rate.
n Microwaves are tested for leakage to ensure radiation levels are acceptable.
n Every appliance is labelled and recorded on an itemised asset register.
n All reports are available through our client portal on our website.

EMERGENCY LIGHTING
If artificial lighting is installed in the workplace then some form of Emergency Lighting is
likely to be mandatory. It will automatically come on when the normal lighting provision
fails. Duty Holders have an obligation to test and maintain the Emergency Lighting systems
in accordance with the Fire Precautions (Workplace) regulations 1997.
Emergency Escape Lighting Comprising escape route, open area and high risk task area
lighting is the mandatory part of an Emergency Lighting system that provides illumination
for the safety of people leaving a location.
Standby Lighting Provided to enable normal activities to continue substantially unchanged.
Dependent on the use or occupancy of the building it is not a legal requirement.
EIAT are conversant with the extensive interdependent British and EU Standards and
legislation that govern and support the provision and maintenance of Emergency Lighting
systems. To ensure total compliance including Health and Safety Fire Regulations and to
maintain your system in accordance with the stringent specifications of insurance companies,
we offer a comprehensive range of testing and assessment services, including the following:
n Battery discharge test and standby battery charge life.
n Lumen level output assessment, functionality and position of illuminated signage.
n Identify and confirm compliance of all maintained and non-maintained Emergency
Lighting plus the position and operation of all test key switches.
n Compatibility with BS requirements and compliance with current legislation.
n Log book updating and identification and recording of all system failures.
n Provide dated test labels and the Certificate of Emergency Lighting Test and Report.

SCHEMATIC DRAWINGS
Schematic or one-line drawings form part of the essential proof that a Duty Holder needs
to comply with Health and Safety compliance and preventative documentation, including
Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
IET Wiring Regulations BS7671 Requirements for Electrical Installations.
514.9.1 A legible diagram, chart or table or equivalent form of information shall be
provided indicating in particular:
n The type and composition of each circuit (points of utilisation served, number
and size of conductors, type of wiring).
n The method used for compliance with regulations.
n The information necessary for the identification of each device performing the
functions of protection, isolation and switching, and its location.
n Any circuit or equipment vulnerable to the electrical tests.
For simple installations the foregoing information may be given in a schedule.
A durable copy of the schedule relating to a distribution board shall be provided
within or adjacent to each distribution board.
Documentation is therefore an essential requirement for all types of electrical systems.
There is no ‘one-size fits all’ diagrammatic representation for electrical systems but in
practice a Schematic Drawing is an efficient way of capturing the essential information.
They are particularly important when in the event of a failure of supply a full simple
diagram is available so that any temporary works can be planned quickly and safely.
EIAT offers a full Schematic Drawing Service with the ability to produce diagrams up to
AO size. We can provide them ready framed and also attach them to your wall if required.
