I too went to Thomas Jefferson. My 6th grade teacher was Mr. Chong, and the room faced the Ala Wai Canal. We lived in Kapahulu and I walked across the Ala Wai Golf course every day to school, stopping to catch crabs with coconut fron lassos. I went to Iolani for 7th and 8th grades and went to Punahou from 9th on. I used to pal around with my best friends, Darrell Degaa, Don Walker, Bucky Logan and David Porteus. Graydon Woolaway was the cousin of Stan, both nuts. Graydon was one of my great friends, we used to go to his house all the time, riding the elevator up to the 3rd floor which was the living room. (on Diamond head for the view) and also used to go to Billy Austin's house next door. I think Graydon's dad owned Grayline Hawaii. Sure seemed like a bunch of old folks in that photo that Marvin sent. I knew Betsy Paoa pretty well, I think they used to live in a house somewhere near the Hawaii Village is now? We spent a lot of time growing up in Kahala and we lived in Aina Haina out on Kalaianaole Hwy. Good fun times Keith O. Kaneta '55 Amherst, MA Mahalo for all 'da ono memories... but no forget C.D. Ruth Adelson Bailey '53 Jo Ann, I'll leave you with my little word riff... 1945...the war ended, our family returned home from San Francisco and I entered the third grade at Punahou. For four years the center of my world was rickety Rice Hall, which housed the elementary school. Mauka was the wooden pavilion where the floor boomed like a bass drum when we ran around barefoot. On the makai side was Dole Hall, the cafeteria; and Castle Hall, the girls' dormitory. The wood shop was in its basement, redolent with sawdust and linseed oil. These four structures formed a semicircle about the Lily Pond, an inky, bottomless pool -- symbol of the soul of Ka Punahou, the new spring. With floating white flowers and green petals, it seemed huge and mysterious. In those days it was much bigger, the swimming tank much smaller. Once, the whole school marched into Dillingham Hall, younger kids wedged two to a seat, to see and hear "The Brown Bomber," Joe Louis, heavyweight champion of the world. We sat arranged alphabetically like books on a shelf. Curtis Iaukea on my left, Patsy Kelley on my right. Rice Hall was our home away from home. Our mothers made blue denim sleeping mats on which we allegedly rested after lunch. Some mischievous boys would make a commotion, causing the teacher to march over to us, where we hoped to peer up her skirts as she hovered above. Unable to nap, I'd writhe around or draw '46 Cadillacs with huge tail fins. I can still smell the tempera paints, the newly mowed middle field grass, guava juice in wax cups, plumeria leis on May Day, the aroma that preceded the Manoa rain. I will always remember how the stairways and balustrades shuddered the first time jet fighters flew over Oahu. Now, when I visit Punahou, I walk past the chapel and the Lily Pond. Squinting up towards the rise I imagine old Rice Hall, the spirit of our little Class of 1955 within, still wrapped in its cocoon of innocence. Me ke aloha pumehana, ~ Ron Jacobs '55 "Whodaguy on da radio?" Mahalo...that made my day... Do you remember a song that we learned in Punahou elementary at Rice Hall... "Do you know the Minah bird...he's a saucy fellow. Black & brown his feathers are...legs and beak are yellow. Wings and tail are marked with white...eyes so black and shiny. Near and far they look for food...oh, they are soooo tiny!..." Written by the Winney sisters...principal and music teach in elementary school. Wigay '50 Pehea Oe Too good! There are some stories I'd love to tell and some GREAT stories I've heard over the years, which I wish the tellers would put to print. The water buffalo at the corner of Kapiolani and Date(?) where Iolani Court Plaza stands. The elephant, giraffe, chimp and some deer kept on a road which now leads to Kahala Hilton - think it was part of the old dairy

(Hind-Clarke?) out there where the Waialae Golf Course now stands. Always wondered what happened to this elephant - if she was the one called Daisy. Probably. My friend and I used to climb the fence and sit on her head - sometimes she'd walk around - sometimes she'd just stand by the fence. This was probably around 1944/5 ish. We would also get wild sugar cane and when we'd hand it to the chimp but didn't let go right away, he would spit at us. Nasty creature! Dana Keyes Di Rito '49 and former inmate of Castle Hall (I spent three years tied to the campus because I seemed to be campused all the time! Rotten luck! And there are some wonderful hash house tales to tell! My sister, Bettie Joy Keyes, (called Joy) was in the class of '51) Thanks. It brought back some great memories of times so long ago. Well done. I don't know if anyone has sent additional memories for your wonderful list but here are a couple I didn't see: We used to say Burn! when someone made-a. Lucky Luck on TV selling malasadas, pan douce and Royal beer and making it all look so ono-licious. That was back when you could show someone actually drinking beer on TV and it sure did look like he enjoyed every swallow. Scanning the want ads for summer jobs and having to skip all the AJA preferred ones. Getting our driving test and having to stop and start on Allencaster Dr. without rolling back. Again, Jo Ann, thanks for the memories. John Nickerson, Kailua, Hawaii, class of '59 <http://www.pixi.com/~johnnick/homepage.html> <http://www.pixi.com/~johnnick/homepage.html>What a great collection you put together. I did not know that I was so memorable in Arsenic & Old Lace. I sent the memories on to my sister Pat who now lives in Washington State and know that she will enjoy it. Thanks for putting it together. Aloha, Richard Kelley Mahalo for this e.mail. It was fun to read--brought back some wonderful memories. Aloha, Grace Ching '60 Oh yes, thank you very much for such long lost sweet memories. So many that were special, esp Auntie Lau and Uncle Frankl . A large part of our family. Relax, and enjoy it, with KPOI 1380..." The internet is a wonderous place. I was surfing recently looking for myself, and up I popped! Actually, I think it was a reference to my father, Victor Eckland. I'm the third (III). I read the long letter-list containing snippets of Old Hawai'i. They brought back a flood of memories to me. I was born and raised on Oahu. Although I didn't attend Punahou, I share most of those times and revisit them often, especially when I see a rainbow or hear a bit of pidgeon english being spoken. Its curious that the reference above to my father is about Cabbages and Kings. I don't remember anything about it. I assume its in

reference to one of his many radio programs. I can only remember him as the Waterfront Reporter on Sunday mornings. He would spin his sea- going yarns that were based on fact and then embellished for the 15- minute stories. He would on occasion take me to the broadcasting studio to sit VERY quietly during his show. It seems, however, that his love of words and the sea was somehow inherited by me. I'm an Engineering Specifications writer living in the Northwest (Seattle) surrounded by water, ships, and lotsa green. I'm glad I happened across your snippets. I'm going to print it out and reread it from time to time when I get that urge to remember those bare-foot, "honna botta" days....hot malasadas from Kapahulu Bakery, fishing and crabbing with my bamboo pole with a #14 hook using jumbo shrimp as bait! Now a shrimp probably costs a couple bucks! The owner of Okada Store in Waiale/Kahala would GIVE them to me every weekend along with some aku heads for my crab nets. Ah, the good old days. Aloha pumehana, Vic Eckland III Thank you for all the hard work. I enjoyed reading your work and believe it or not, remember quite a few of the things you point out, having been a resident of Honolulu from 1954 on. A good video to see some of the old sites is from John Wayne's Big Jim McLain. Regards, Chris Townsley, Class of '71 Beautiful--I remember almost all of it, particularly J. Akuhead Pupule and all the danged bells he rang to wake you up. From one who was there only two years (at Hickam 1948-50) and hasn't been back in half a century, mainly from fear of culture shock, a salute and severe nostalgia pangs . . .Bob Strippy '52 Can't tell you how very much I've enjoyed your "remembrances"!!! What a fabulous "piece of history" you've shared with us!!...Each line I read, brought warmth and humor, nostalgia and even some sadness as your words brought back memories of my youth...Silly stuff we did, songs we sang with gusto, places we gathered to "talk story" and the feelings we had in those days, had not been entirely lost...simply buried just below my conscious thoughts. Thank goodness you brought them back up for me!! And I'm still laughing!!! and beginning to remember even more personal times with my family... (like falling over a tombstone while picking plumeria in the cemetery near Roosevelt...while my Mom played "lookout" for Pat Westfall and me!!) Thank you, Jo Ann, for your great talent and thinking to share it with all of us! I look forward to seeing you at our reunion in June!..... Aloha, Sharon Strombeck Witter '55 Hi Jo Ann...I do remember, and nice of you to send a message!! Susan Carter Ayrault '55 Thanks so much for the memories. I remember almost all of them with great fondness. What a wonderful place we grew up in. We were so lucky!! Jim Walker '55 Your history of being a kid did make the memory work!

Alan Sanborn '55 I can't believe all those memories you wrote!! You need to send those into the memories section of the Punahou Bulletin! You sure reminded me of things I'd forgotten--some I don't think I even knew. Sheila Gow Shearer '55 Your collection of memories and those of others are most wonderful. Although I wasn't there for much of it, reading the Hawaiian words and the reference to buildings, school events etc. was very poignant for me. I remember the aquacades and the new bathing suits we were measured for (and got to keep!!!). If my memory is correct, in 6th grade we were spearfishermen. After our circle of swimmers did a 'perfect' surface dive...and while still under water we removed a facsimile of a fish from our bathing suit. We all came to the surface at just the same time with our catch on our sword to a rousing applause. In 7th grade I think we were the babies of the new year. The program was broken into months and we were January. Or do I have the years reversed? Gilbert Ane is a strong memory. Not just his size, but his great, outgoing personality is something I remember. Buster Crabbe's performance was a highlight. A couple of years ago my sister and I took a trip to Orcas Island (Washington State) and the owner of the B&B where we stayed was Buster Crabbe's daughter (and her husband). Margy and I had a great time reminiscing with her about her visits to Hawaii with her father. Aloha, Helen Craig '55 Lynch, Alexandria, VA Thanks for the memories. I can't wait to find a spot in the Bulletin! Na Hali'a Aloha is filled up for at least the next two issues. I'll put this in my future file. Good fun stuff. Thank you again for writing!
