Good bye to on

Trina Regnier, (Mrs Regnier), Deputy Principal, Room 3 – Years 4 & 5

Principal, Pam Quirke (Mrs Quirke)

There is one word that sums up how I feel about teaching and learning at Te Mata School and in Room 3 – LUCKY! Our first week back was incredible; our class has united as a team already and the learning vibe is infectious.

I have had a wonderful summer holiday with my family and friends, spending the majority of it here in Whaingaroa building sand castles with my daughter Lucy (who will be two in April). We also spent a week with our toes immersed in the white sands of Whangapoua. I am re-energized for a fantastic year of learning.

Building connections and relationships with my students and their families is integral to my practice as a teacher; it is a privilege to help each and every one my students reach their potential and grow as an individual. At Te Mata School we aim to meet the needs of all of our students through personalised learning. We believe that children have different learning styles and pace, and they are all unique individuals, not only capable of learning, but capable of succeeding. If you have not had the chance to pop in and see the new and improved interior of Room 3, please pop in anytime, we would love to show it off to you!

Trina Regnier

I live an action packed life of fun, food and adventure and the majority of it all happens right here in Raglan with friends and family. I love the water. Swimming and walking along Ngarunui beach, kayaking and paddle boarding at Lorenzen Bay, attempting to biscuit at Lake Arapuni and cooling off and relaxing in our pool at home I’ve been trying to live true to my fitbit. I have certainly nailed the sleeping aspect of it in the holidays with my little afternoon naps and still reading positions in the sun. I have some necessary improvements to go on the steps and floors aspect. When trying to find a photo for the newsletter Katie suggested a photo she took of me at the top of the Hakarimata Steps. Not a good look I tell you! A bright red face, severe perspiration and an attitude problem when my fitbit told me I had only walked 40 floors!! I’m sure it should have been more. Mix that all up with a few good shopping days, eating out in our fabulous Raglan cafes/restaurants and BBQ’s at home all equates to a great summer. I’m all refreshed and ready for another fabulous year at Te Mata School.

Room 2: - Year 2 & 3, Jacqui Clarke (Mrs Clarke)

Room 1: - Year 0 & 1’s Haylee Moeke, (Mrs Moeke) I am thrilled to back for my 6th year at Te Mata School and it has been a pleasure watching so many children grow up to be successful young people. The last year has been a busy one! I was fortunate enough to be a successful applicant for the Teacher Led Innovation Fund and have been working very hard over the last 6 months to create change in not only my teaching but my leadership. This journey continues this year, and I’m excited to continue my learning and create positive changes that will benefit the children. Zac and I brought a house in Hamilton, so have been busy all summer in the garden and completing the first stages of renovations. We’ve been lucky the weather has been so kind to us, so we’ve been able to complete a lot! I’m excited to see what 2016 will hold and wish everyone a successful and happy year.

Haylee Moeke

Hi a family, my name is Jacqui Clarke and I am now the Room 2 teacher for 2016. I have switched my O.R.S role at school to enjoying being submerged in whole class learning. I have been at Te Mata School for around 7 years now and have two beautiful children who also attend the school. I am also on the P.T.A committee which helps support good old fashioned community spirit, whilst earning money for our students. If you have wondered about joining the P.T.A we will welcome you with open arms. You don’t need to be at every meeting, just ready with your ideas or to arm the BBQ or bake some cakes! My husband, Poly, is a landscaper and he works around Raglan and Hamilton. I think we live in paradise and can’t believe how lucky we are to be living so close to the ocean and all it offers. Here’s to another year at Te Mata and I can’t wait to see what surprises are in store for us! It is certainly never boring!

Room 4: - Year 6, 7 & 8, Kathy Briant, (Mrs Briant)

Hi there! This year marks the beginning of my 4th year at Te Mata School. I will be teaching in Room 4, Year 6,7 & 8. I just love teaching the emerging adolescent. They have so much to offer you and no day is the same. They are an interesting bunch and provide a day full of the unexpected, which I love. I am hot on students using their initiative and being a mature member of society. My job is to prepare these students for high school and it's great seeing them head off at the end of Year 8 ready to tackle the challenges ahead. I thoroughly enjoy teaching maths and reading and I have a strong passion for health and fitness. Room 4 students participate in Physical Education everyday and I believe a healthy body is a fit mind. I am an experienced intermediate teacher, having taught Year 8 in Auckland for 15yrs and its great transferring my skills onto the students here at Te Mata. Watch this space!!

Kathy Briant

Hello everybody, 2016 sees great changes for me and how I will be fulfilling my role here at Te Mata School. This year I will not be in my own classroom as I will be training in Reading Recovery every morning and will also be our school’s new ORS teacher working with our wonderful special needs students. I am super excited about these new roles and am looking forward to all the amazing learning, challenges and adventures that will be in store for me. I also feel very fortunate because I will be based in te Tari (the office attached to Room 1) and will be having a lot of contact with our students, making lots of new relationships with a much wider range of students than in previous years. I am so excited about all of these changes and am looking forward to this year kicking off!

Understanding how the Whānau Newletter book works. (Pānui o te Whānau)

Even though we are aware that some of our families would like the newsletter emailed the paper/book version meets so many of our legislative requirements especially around communication and consultation with our parents.

To ensure the system works well it is important that all parents receive their newsletter whānau book on a Monday/Tuesday, read it, write any comments or questions that you may have, sign it and return it to school before Friday of each week. I check all whānau books each week and counter sign. Toni Opie checks off the whānau books each Monday and then glues in the next week’s newsletter.

Thank you for helping us to get a 100% return rate of all whānau books each week.

Hi everyone, I am a specialist reading teacher working part time at both Te Uku School and Te Mata School. This year I will be teaching reading acceleration to middle school students using the wonderful new books purchased from the 2015 auction fundraiser, and I will have four Reading Recovery students at Te Uku. Over the years I have taught in several schools, at most year levels, and completed my degree in education at Waikato University; for the last ten years I have focused mainly on teaching reading to individuals. In my spare time I enjoy keeping up what is happening on our farm, (we have sheep, beef and dairy grazers), trying to keep fit, and reading. I find helping children with their learning very rewarding, and I am pleased to be part of the teaching ‘team’ at Te Mata. Mrs Sally Poole P.S. I you don’t already belong to the Raglan Library I urge you to take your children down for a look, and sign up. It’s free to join and they have amazing things for every age level.

IMPORTANT MEDICAL INFORMATION! For a number of years we have had a student at Te Mata School who had a severe peanut allergy causing an Anaphylactic reaction. As he is now successfully attending High School we have been approached by some parents and children if they are allowed to have peanut butter sandwiches. As we are not aware of any other students with peanut allergies we have decided to allow the return of peanut products. Please note:

The school has decided to continue purchasing an epi-pen so if a student ever did have any sort of Anaphylactic reaction for any reason we could administer it on the guidance of a health professional.

If any new student did enrol with a peanut allergy we would return to being a peanut free school.

Child Absent from School

If your child/ren is going to be absent or late to school we need to know. Teachers are required by

law to record school attendance. We need to record if they are present or absent. If absent,

teachers have to record whether it is an explained or unexplained absence.

Please phone the school or write the teacher a

note to explain all absences.

For optimum learning we would like our students present at least 91% of the time.

The 9% allows for any sick days or unforeseeable family situations. Swimming Pool

Please make sure the pool gate is padlocked when you leave.

Please respect the equipment left inside the pool and ensure no one plays with the swimming pool hoist. This hoist is a very expensive piece of equipment and we don’t want the battery going flat.

Students will be swimming every day. Please provide the teacher a written note if your child cannot swim

Thank you to Wayne Stephens for the brilliant job he has been doing keeping the pool functioning all summer.

I hope you all have a fantastic week. Take care, Pam Quirke

Parents / Caregivers Please Sign. Thanks.

Te Mata School has a very special relationship with Meridian which was formed prior to and during the building of the windfarm. Meridian has invested significant about of funds into our school including the purchasing and installation of the shelter down at the pool, the basketball hoops, sand for the sandpit etc.

Meridian provides a special camp for students from around New Zealand and their camp next week is based in Raglan.

We have been asked if our students could welcome these 12 Year 7 & 8 students to Te Mata and then 6 of our leaders will travel with them to the wind farm to show them our turbine.

When: Monday 15th February

Timeline: 12.15pm – Welcome and a shared lunch with our selected Leaders. (We will be catering for 30 people) 1.00pm – Drive to Windfarm 1.30 – 2.30pm - Walk, talk and get up close to a wind turbine (perhaps the turbine that Te Mata’s time capsule is buried under?) 3.00pm – Back at Te Mata School. Visitors Leave for camp in Raglan

Meridian is filming the complete camp experience for these 12 students and therefore Te Mata Students may be filmed as we welcome them. Our 6 leaders will have individual permission slips sent home.

How can you help? 1. We want our school to look beautiful. If you have any

spare time during the week to pop down and pull a few weeds or weed eat some of the long grass that would be greatly appreciated.

2. Could you provide some home baking for the shared

lunch? YES ⃝ (Please Tick)

3. Could you come down to school and help serve

lunch? YES ⃝ (Please Tick)
