This morning, join your group for an introductory briefing where you'll get the chance to meet your fellow travellers.

Later, head out to see some of the world’s most iconic sights – the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx. Explore thesestructures that have stood tall for some 4,500 years and learn about the ancient history of the monuments. The oldest ofthe Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one to remain largely intact, the pyramids are a sight to behold.

Afterwards, make your way to the Egyptian Museum, home to one of the world's great collections of antiquities. Wanderthe treasure-filled halls of the museum, and make sure to check out the Royal Mummies Hall for a close encounter withsome of the country’s most important queens and pharaohs. The masses of gleaming artefacts recovered from thetomb of Tutankhamun are quite something.

DAY 3Destination Cairo El Alamein Alexandria

Today we'll drive to the port city of Alexandria, along what is known as the ‘desert road’. En route, we'll visit the ElAlamein War Cemetery. It is here that two extended battles were fought during World War II. The first began on July 1,1942, and lasted for 27 days, ending as a stalemate. second attack which lasted for 13 days. The importance of El Alamein was highlighted by Winston Churchill, who said:“Before Alamein we never had a victory.”

Afterwards, we'll continue on to Alexandria to check in to our hotel and enjoy some free time.

Today your guide will take you on a tour of the city, known for its broad beaches and seafront corniche dotted with sunloungers and cafes. Afterwards, prepare to delve into the catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa. Heading underground, we'll getto view the largest known Roman burial site in Egypt, complete with burial chambers, labyrinthine alleyways andentertaining rooms for families coming to visit the dead. The crypts are 20 metres below street level, and what probablybegan as a small family tomb grew into a coil of rooms that could accommodate more than 300 bodies. We then driveback to Cairo.

On arrival back in Cairo, take some time to relax or get some supplies before boarding your overnight sleeper train toAswan.

Please note: the train cabins are private twin shares, however space is limited and your luggage will need to remain withyou, therefore we suggest limiting the size of your main suitcase to a medium-size bag.

Welcome to Aswan! Egypt's sunniest southern city and ancient frontier town, Aswan is located 130 kilometres south ofLuxor, and has a distinctively 'African' feel. Visit the beautiful Temple of Isis (the goddess of health, marriage andwisdom), which was rescued from the rising waters of the Nile and relocated from Philae Island to Agilkia Island. It's amarvel of decorative pylons that features some of Egypt's finest carvings.

Today we set out to explore some of Aswan’s other landmarks. We begin with the unfinished obelisk, the largest in thecountry, which was left incomplete. It now provides a fascinating look at how these great monuments were constructed.We then continue to the Nubian Museum. Considered to be a gateway to the history of Nubia, this museum enablesvisitors to understand the complex history of the local area and its people. Afterwards, we visit the Aswan High Dam,which sits behind the mighty Lake Nasser. At the time it was made (the 1960s), it was the largest dam project in theworld. The creation of the reservoir necessitated the costly relocation of the ancient Egyptian temple complex of AbuSimbel, which would otherwise have been submerged. Later, enjoy free time at your resort.

Today we drive to the ancient Abu Simbel temples, near the southern Egyptian border. The two enormous sandstonestructures were built in the 1200s BCE by Ramses II to serve as lasting monuments to himself and his favourite wifeNefertari. The larger temple, dedicated to three major Egyptian deities, features four large statues of Ramses II on itsfaçade, while the smaller temple is dedicated to the goddess of love, Hathor, with statues designed to embody Nefertari.

Set on the banks of the artificial Lake Nasser, the structures were once in danger of being flooded with the constructionof the Aswan High Dam but were saved via an extensive project to cut the temples into pieces and move them to higherground, where they are seen today.

On our return to Aswan the rest of the day is free for you to make your own discoveries.

Later we'll check in to our Nile cruise – our floating home for the next three nights.

DAY 8Destination Kom Ombo Temple Edfu

Today your journey ashore is to visit the Temple of Kom Ombo. Set dramatically on the bank of the Nile, 47 kilometresnorth of Aswan and 168 kilometres south of Luxor, the soaring, chunky columns of the double temple are a magnificentsight to behold as you arrive from the river.

Dedicated to the gods Sobek and Haroeris, the temple's finely carved reliefs give a sense of this area's prominence ascapital over the surrounding region during the Ptolemaic era. Today, Kom Ombo may be a sleepy agriculturalbackwater surrounded by sugar cane fields, but its prime position along the Nile meant it was once one of UpperEgypt's most important centres. Wander through the temple's colonnades, gazing up at scenes of kingly propaganda,and you'll get a sense of this rich history for yourself.

Later we'll return to the boat where we’ll continue travelling upriver, with plenty of free time for relaxing on the sundeckand taking in the surrounding sights – from fishermen casting nets and farmers working their land to the deserthills that frame the lush riverbanks.

DAY 9Destination Edfu Luxor

Today we will moor near Edfu – home to ancient settlements and temples, as well as a bustling town centre and abazaar.

Optional Tour:Optional Tour: Temple of Horus – Perhaps the best preserved temple in the entire country, the scale of this ancientedifice is incredibly impressive, with soaring sandstone walls covered in reliefs and hieroglyphics. You’ll pass through thegrand temple entranceway into a colossal courtyard ringed with 32 towering columns, each richly decorated withpatterns, and once the site of a great altar.

Return to the boat for your final evening on one of the world’s greatest rivers. Tonight we overnight in Luxor port.

Continue to the temple, perhaps the best preserved in the whole country. The scale is incredibly impressive, withsoaring sandstone walls covered in reliefs and hieroglyphics. You’ll pass through the Grand Temple entrancewayinto a colossal courtyard ringed with 32 towering columns, each richly decorated with patterns, and once the site ofa great altar. The sense of awe that comes from touring this temple is incredible.

Your Nile cruise comes to an end in the open-air museum of Luxor – from the spectacular temple complex of Karnak tothe Valley of the Kings, Luxor is full of wonderfully preserved reminders of the pharaohs.

Today we'll explore the magnificent Karnak Temple, which is perhaps the most impressive of all the ancient pharaohs'monumental works. One of the world's most celebrated temple complexes, Karnak was built over some 200 years andwas once known as the 'Chosen of Places'. Your guided tour of this vast temple of impressive pylons, obelisks andchapels will reveal its finest sections, such as the Avenue of Sphinxes and the Great Temple of Amun.

The rest of the day is yours: relax, shop in the excellent bazaar, or perhaps experience the atmosphere of a localteahouse.

Today we'll discover some of the many wonders of ancient Thebes. Our first stop is the Colossi of Memnon – two 17-metre-high statues on Luxor's west bank. Carved from granite blocks, they represent the Pharaoh Amenhotep III andwere once part of an impressive colonnade.

Continue on to the spectacular royal burial site of the Valley of the Kings. Buried under the arid hills here are the tombsof more than 60 pharaohs, many richly decorated with reliefs and paintings. Explore this sprawling and spectacularplace with your guide, where the pharaohs of the New Kingdom (16th to 11th century BCE) were secretly interred for alleternity, and where archaeological discoveries are still being made. Your guide will explain the history of andlegends surrounding these remarkable people, their funerary rites, and the significance of the many paintings andhieroglyphics, still well-preserved in the deepest tombs.

After paying a visit to three of the most interesting royal tombs we'll continue to the Mortuary Temple of QueenHatshepsut, a stunning colonnaded building of sharp lines that contrasts beautifully against the craggy high cliffsbehind it, creating a spectacular natural amphitheatre. One of Egypt’s greatest queens, this temple was built to proveher importance among the ancestors.

Today we'll bid farewell to the Nile and drive east to the beachside town of Hurghada. The Nile valley's verdant landscapeis soon replaced with the barren Eastern Desert. Passing through rocky hills, we'll begin to catch glimpses of theglittering waters of the Red Sea, the rugged bulk of the Sinai Peninsula looming through the haze on the oppositeshore. A vibrant beach resort, Hurghada is by no means a typical ‘adventure destination’. After checking in to your hotel,take a walking tour with your guide to get your bearings, and check out some of the local restaurants and sights.

HOW TO EXTEND YOUR STAY Some customers like to enhance their holiday by extending their stay pre and/or post tour. Ifyou wish to do so, please follow these steps to initiate your request:

Edfu Temple: Please note: The only mode of transport available to visit the Edfu temple is bylocally managed horse and carriages. As a responsible travel focused business, animalwelfare is extremely important to us and unfortunately, some operators of the horse andcarriages have been found to be in breach of our animal welfare guidelines. It is for thisreason we do not include the visit the Edfu Temple. While we recommend that you do notuse the horse and carriage to visit the Temple, the decision is ultimately up to you and yourguide can help arrange transport and ensure the best horses are used.

Optional tours can be selected once you have finalised your tour purchase and paid yourdeposit. TIPPING A friendly reminder that tipping is not included in your package. At the commencement ofyour tour you will be asked to provide tipping to your guide towards a ‘kitty’, which is thenused towards the guide tipping for the services of helpers, hotel staff, restaurants and airportporterage. We suggest USD$5 (AUD$7 approx) per person towards the kitty. Please note thatthis tipping is not for the guide, merely for the guide to tip the services of the driver and localworkers during your tour. While not made compulsory, if you choose not to contribute to thekitty it means that the guide is tipping for these services out of their own pocket. Yourcooperation in this instance is most appreciated.

Tipping for your guide will be collected at the conclusion of their services. To remove theuncertainty and stress of not knowing how much is appropriate to tip we recommendUSD$6-8 (AUD$8-12 approx) per person per day. PAIRED SOLO TRAVELLER This package allows you to avoid paying a single supplement by booking as a Paired SoloTraveller

All bookings must be arranged over the phone by calling 1300 88 66 88.

Regardless of whether an accompanying solo traveller is found, you are guaranteed to travelat no additional cost.

Solo travellers are matched only on the basis of gender and not on other factors such as age,nationality, religion or sexuality. We kindly ask that you disclose any requirements, medical orotherwise, that might disturb your matched traveller’s sleep (e.g. sleep apnoea or a CPAPmachine). Unfortunately, in the other traveller’s interests, we request that you proceed withyour own private room with the resulting single supplement. Should a second solo traveller not be available, you are nonetheless guaranteed to travel atno extra cost and you will be placed into a single, twin share or double room by yourself. Yourtour group may include multiple solo travellers who may or may not be paired. No changeswill be permitted to any pairing arrangements.

Note that for some portions of some itineraries, you may not be with a larger group. Somepackages may operate on groups as small as two and there may therefore be time spenttravelling only with your paired traveller. Should a package require a minimum number of 2travellers and you are not paired, your booking may be cancelled.

You will be introduced to your matched solo traveller at the beginning of your itinerary andyour personal details will not be shared as per our Privacy Policy. Should there be anydissatisfaction with your matched traveller, unfortunately we are unable to make anychanges to your room arrangements or offer any refund.
