Satar, A Tempe Seller
who Received Dug Water
Well
Konawe, EGSLP—“We, the villagers of Belatu village are so
thankful for the help on dug water well distribution that facili-
tated by EGSLP-CIDA in our village.” Said Head of Belatu vil-
lage in Public Audit of Dug Water Well Distribution Clesi
Event.
EGSLP facilitates many villages that still do not have access to
clean water, especially in Konawe District, South-East Sulawesi.
One of the villages that facilitated by EGSLP is Belatu village in
Pondidaha sub-district. Belatu started the activity from March
12—April 15, 2011. There are 24 units dug water well that di-
vided into 8 units for 3 stages of development. For the first
stage, there are 5 from 8 units as a well rehabilitation (restoring
a well).
One of beneficiaries, Satar (60 years old) who works as farmer
felt blessed with this program. Before this program came, he
took a long distance walk every day just to take some water. But
since there was a dug water well next to his house now, he never
worried about water
matters anymore.
Even now cause of
the new dug water
well, he just started
making Tempe and
selling it in other
villages.
Satar makes Tempe
10 kg per day and
distributes it to other
villages. From this
new activity, he gets addi-
tional income and spends it
for daily needs. “If I still using neighbors’ dug well, it will be
hard to wash soybean there. But now there’s a new dug well for
me, so I can free to use it whenever I want,” said Satar.
Jeffry El-Zinga and Hari Basuki from CIDA visited
Desa Belatu.
Well hole shows the depth of it
CIDA Team came visiting again Gorontalo and Konawe (21-28/11), and
on this chance Ms. Kimberley Heuckroth from CIDA who’s visiting. She
was invited to the tour of some villages under intervention of EGSLP. In
Gorontalo, Ms. Heuckroth visited Biyonga village for Bamboo Nursery
Program. Bamboo Nursery is one of WESI activities that being conducted in
Biyonga Watershed. In that chance, Ms. Heuckroth from Cida was accompa-
nied by staffs of Forestry Services of Gorontalo District and BAPPEDA
Gorontalo.
In Konawe she went to some villages like Angohi village. She and the rest
members of group checked private toilets in some houses and also delivered
some questions to the beneficiaries. Angohi village is one of many villages in
Konawe which get distribution for toilet materials. The people of Angohi are
poor and most of them do not have private toilet in their house, so it’s impor-
tant to help them on that case. Besides Angohi, Ms. Heuckroth also visited
Public Audit in Alosika village and Gender Mainstreaming Seminar in Dawi-
Dawi village.

Overview of EGSLP
The EGSL Program is designed to
address, on a participatory basis
and at the local level, environ-
mental governance, the critical area
of focus will be assisting poor
communities to develop processes
whereby they have greater access
to and control over natural re-
sources, in a way that promotes
sustainable livelihoods while, at
the same time, enhancing sound
environmental management. The
intent is to support and then show-
case innovations in local govern-
ance by contributing to a critical
mass of local successes in partici-
patory NRM, conflict reduction
and greater security of tenure and
access to natural resources by poor
men and women. Specific meas-
ures will be incorporated to ensure
that women’s access to and control
over the use of natural resources is
improved.
The Program Goal is to assist the
government and the people of In-
donesia in the creation and protec-
tion of sustainable livelihoods
through equitable access to, and
sustainable management of, natural
resources and the environment.
The Expected Impact is reduced
poverty through increased sustain-
able livelihood opportunities and
well being for poor rural men,
women, boys, and girls in selected
watersheds in Sulawesi.
The Program Purpose is to improve
environmental and natural resource
governance in selected watersheds
in Sulawesi and demonstrate nego-
tiated and sustainable solutions.

Gorontalo Governor
Visits Public Toilet
in Pauwo Village
A s a form of responsibilities
and support for the ongoing
programs in Gorontalo, Gov-
ernor of Gorontalo, Dr. Ir.
Gusnar Ismail, MM surveyed some ac-
tivities of community members. EGSL
program was one of those programs that
reviewed by the Governor. On Wednes-
day (3/10), the Governor went to Pauwo village, one of EGSLP’s intervention villages, to
see Public Toilet Building that already constructed in May 2011.
Today the Villagers of Pauwo can use it very well. They were also very happy to discuss
with the Governor directly about their activities. Seeing this activity, the Governor has com-
mented that he was very surprised to see progress of EGSLP implementation activities, espe-
cially in Gorontalo.
SES Governor Visits
Puundombi Village
S outh East Sulawesi (SES)
Governor, Nur Alam, just
visited Puundombi Village in
Tongauna District (11/11) due
to National Health Day 2011.
Puundombi village is one of
137 villages in Konawe that included
in the work area of EGSLP. Together
with him in his working visit, Muh.
Andi Baso Nasir (SES BAPPEDA
Head) and the staffs.
In his speech, the governor, instructed
Puundombi people to make health and
sanitation as their first priority in their life. Because it is major factors of being life better
and prosperous. The governor said that Konawe Sehat (Konawe’s Healthy) is the major goal
from integrated programs like Program Permata (Jewel Program) in Konawe District and
Program Bahtermas (Bahtermas Program) for SES.
Konawe Menuju Sehat (Konawe Goes for Healthy) is an important icon in increasing health
services for Konawe people. And this challenge has been answered by villagers in Puun-
dombi village with constructing 58 private toilets for 58 families. Uluaao, Ambopi and the
rest villages in Tongauna sub-district also did the same. The materials distribution for the
toilets was supported by Canadian Government (CIDA) through EGSL Program in one pur-
pose with Konawe Menuju Sehat.
Water Purification in Wowasolo village
Konawe, EGSLP— There
is no disease that comes
suddenly but surely
through a process that is
mostly determined by indi-
vidual life style itself, says
Mashuri Posimbi, SKM,
M.Kes, a speaker for Water
Purification on September
24, 2011 in front of 30 par-
ticipants in training that
was held in Wawosolo village, Wonggodeku. Posimbi said that
before thinking global problem like global warming, people
should fix their life style especially in environmental matters.
Good attitude in environmental matters would affect global en-
vironment, then they can fix environmental problems around
them (including clean water problem).
There are 4 important things to be noted in reaching environ-
mental health standardization; good private toilet, clean water
sources, trash bin, and good household waste management.
Good water is not just clean, but also fulfill health requirements;
physical, chemical and bacteriological requirements, says
Posimbi. Then he told them about characteristics of good clean
water and how to eliminate odors from water. What is interest-
ing in this training is to do a pre test and post test, the results of
the 30 participants experienced an increase in the value of a test
before and after administration of the material, so it can be con-
cluded trainees listened carefully the assigned material.
Sanitation and the Importance for Society
Limboto, EGSLP— Sanitation is a part of behavior to live in a
healthy and clean environment. It aims to make people more
aware of the importance of improving their health for the sake of
cleanliness personally
and generally. Many
people do not know
yet about the impor-
tance of sanitation so
that sanitation semi-
nar should be held for
them.
EGSLP provides
sanitation awareness
program to the com-
munity sanitation in the villages that included its intervention
area in Gorontalo and Kendari. Like Environmental Sanitation
Awareness seminars that conducted in Bongohulawa, Limboto
(06/07/11).
There were quite a few people who attended on that occasion.
Experts from Line Agencies in Gorontalo District were coming
to deliver the material. One of them was Elvis Ayuba S. KM (in
picture) which is a staff from health institution Kab. Gorontalo.
He gave an explanation how to store and treat clean water well.
If we see the enthusiasm of the participants, we could see the
hope of good sanitation future in their face.
Overcome Problems of Waste Disposal using SPAL
(Wastewater sewer)
Gorontalo, EGSLP– One of many sanitation problems that com-
munity has in sanitation scope is poor waste disposal. Some
people in villages are often made dizzy with this problem seem
trivial.
As happened in Pilohayanga village in Gorontalo, some people
complain of puddles that always come up every time it rains.
This is due to the lack of good drainage in their settlement. Then
they conduct a verification and manufacturing planning SPAL
(wastewater sewers).
SPAL is made to flow through household wastewater sewers to
a point. SPAL also prevent the possibility of a puddle on the
settlement, especially when the rainy season comes. Making
SPAL in the village Pilohayanga take up to 6 months, and after
that no more complaints anymore about this.
CLESI NEWS
Build Latrine to the End Latoma
Latoma, EGSLP – Nesowi village is a village that located at the
tip of Latoma District, South East Sulawesi. It is not easy to
make a journey to that village, especially with terrible and steep
road conditions. Like other villages in Latoma, Nesowi has not
been established for sanitation scope. This is because of not
many people in Nesowi have toilet in their houses.
The first thing of what EGSLP doing in Nesowi is to conduct
Environmental Sanitation Awareness. After that the people there
was proposing to build toilets for 27 households. This activity
cost only IDR 13 Million for that many good toilets. This is ex-
cellent progress due to the condition that is the village is very far
from town and need bigger cost than only 13 Million for more
than 10 latrines. Audit Public for this activity was held on Sep-
tember 23, 2011.
WESI NEWS
Marisa, EGSLP – WESI activities just began in 2011 in Konawe and
Gorontalo. Like in Marisa Watershed area, Gorontalo, two activities
just started there; Training on Making Organic Pesticides and Training
on Forest Trees Breeding (Mahogany and Breadfruit). Organic Pesti-
cides Production was held on November 22, 2011. People there were
asked to be more aware with all natural things around them, because
those things can be very important for life. The example is many plants
in their backyards that can be utilized as organic pesticides i.e. Papaya
leaves, Castor Oil leaves, Bael fruit, Lemon / Oil grass, and Thai gin-
ger. An organic pesticide is an important thing for pest control and pre-
vention naturally without damaging the soil and plants components.
Meanwhile another activity, Training on Forest Trees Breeding has been go-
ing for on 2 meetings. At the second meeting, participants have set the loca-
tion and do the filling medium (polybag) for nursery process. The community
has chose Mahogany and Breadfruit as the trees that they want to develop.
One of reasons for that is especially for Breadfruit tree; nowadays it is seldom
to be found in Gorontalo. Yet the Breadfruit tree (the fruits) is one of the fruits
that often be used by the community. In this activity, K2DAS has collaborated
with Forestry Service to run this training.

Obituary: Pak Haji Fatahuddin,
Chief of K2DAS Upper Lahumbuti , Dies at 52
Pak Haji Fatahuddin A. Musa,
was a chief of K2DAS for Up-
per Lahumbuti, died on Dec. 13
in Abuki, Konawe. He was 52.
During his life, he was known as
a person who was very responsi-
ble and dedicated to his duties
as chief for K2DAS in Upper
Lahumbuti. Before, he was also
being a chief for K2PD in Aleuti. He was sharp and al-
ways bearing brilliant ideas for the excellent works.
Born on August 30, 1959 in Enrekang, Pak Haji was still
thinking about K2DAS and its activities during his last
time, especially the upcoming activity, Integrated Pest
Controlling for Watermelon and Cucumber. Before he
dies, he left messages to his staff in K2DAS Upper La-
humbuti, in order to conducting the WESI activity very
well.
Goodbye Pak Haji, we will miss you.
Lawulo, EGSLP - Rattan is a non-timber forest that grows in the
forests of Southeast Sulawesi. Think that rattan cannot be util-
ized, but if it is converted into a handicraft or useful product, the
resale value will be higher. During this time, rattan just be sold in
raw materials only. But if people want to learn how to make a
handicraft from it, it will be a very good value for them.
Based on that case, K2DAS Mid Lahumbuti held Rattan Handi-
craft Activities and Its Marketing Management for community
that live in Mid Lahumbuti area on Dec. 1-5. The community
knows well about their villages’ potential of natural resources
including non-timber product like rattan. This activity was sup-
ported and collaborated with Konawe Industry and Trade Ser-
vice. The participants which were consisting 20 hh (4 women, 16
men) were able to learn the material during the training. And they
also able to create a rattan product very well. So by this time, the
participants were expected to use their creative ability to increase
their income and as generally to grow their villages economy
rapidly.
