EG/NE Conference 2016 Mark your calendar! Our annual conference is Sunday, March 20, 2016 at Westchester Community College / Center For The Arts, White Plains, NY. Workshops will be held at the same location Wednesday, March 16 - Saturday, March 19. This year we will have presentations by Amy Roper Lyons, Terry Kovalcik and Chris Darway. Presentations will by followed by demonstrations and we’ll end the conference with our annual buy, sell & trade and raffle. Registration for the conference and workshops may be done through the EG/NE website at www.enamelguildnortheast.org Please see more details on pages 4-9. Under Fire is Now Live! Thank you to all those who submitted work! We had 84 artists submit 279 pieces of work in the categories of jewelry, sculpture, vessels, and wall pieces. We received work from 20 states, and 4 other countries. While a “live in person” exhibition provides viewing from all different angles from any perspective, only those within a close proximity to the venue are able to experience it. With this on-line exhibition, the submission... and audience... is global. It was a very exciting opportunity to provide. The many wonderful pieces submitted made this a competitive jury process and selections were a tough decision. Being the juror for any art competition is a difficult task with numerous considerations to keep in mind. Barbara Seidenath has done a spectacular job in curating a broad showcase of traditional and experimental enamels, reviewing each and every piece for technique and creativity. It’s that time of year again!

The conference is just around the corner on March 20th! Once again, we will be at the Center for the Arts in White Plains, NY. We have three exciting instructors this year. Amy Roper Lyons will be teaching plique-à-jour, Terry Kovalcik (an amazing Precious metal Clay artist) will be teaching PMC specifically for enameling (enameling will not be part of this workshop, just creating PMC pieces which you can enamel later). The third instructor is Chris Darway. He will be teaching 22K gold on copper, silver, and enamel. The product used is Aura 22, a liquid that is painted onto metal or glass and fused with a torch or kiln (in this workshop we’re using a torch). All of these instructors will be presenting at the conference as well.

Thank you to Chryssa Saj for upgrading our reservations interface. It is much easier to navigate than the previous version and we have added several new features to the website. On the EG/NE website you will find all the conference and workshop details and you may:

• pay for your membership• register for workshops and conference • find hotel details (the group rate is good only until February 15th) • purchase aprons • post items you wish to sell • promote workshops you will be teaching • join the member gallery

In addition to all this, we also had a very busy autumn with the Under Fire Exhibition. We had a great response to the call and Barbara Seidenath did a terrific job jurying the exhibition. The prize winners are: Kat Cole (first place), Harlan Butt (second place), and Sharon Massey (third place). Follow this link to view the online exhibition: www.enamelguildnortheast.org/under-fire/#gallery

I can’t wait to see you all at the conference on March 20!

~ Kim

Amy Roper Lyons

Amy Roper Lyons is a studio jeweler and enamelist. Her work expresses her love for the wonderful variety of form and color found in the natural world. Inspired by her garden, and long walks along the seashore near her home, she creates one-of-a-kind and limited edition pieces in high-karat gold, enamels, and gemstones.

Using a combination of enamel processes, including cloisonné, champlevé, and basse-taille, Lyons creates bold compositions of gold and glass. The metalwork draws from a broad palette of techniques, including fusing, forming, fold-forming, carving, chasing, piercing, and fabricating.

Her award-winning work has been published in magazines and books such as 500 Enameled Objects, Lapidary Journal, Ornament, and Art Jewelry Magazine. Lyons’s jewelry is exhibited nationally at museums, galleries and craft shows, recently at the Smithsonian Craft Show. Lyons has taught jewelry and enameling at the New Jersey Center for the Visual Arts, the Newark Museum, and teaches workshops at locations nationally. She received her BFA from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA.

Terry Kovalcik

After more than 30 years working as an illustrator, Terry was drawn to metal clay as a way to bring form and movement into his art. Many of his pieces are made of multiple elements that hang, dangle and swing with the movement of the body. This gives the piece life and adds an element of whimsy.

After sketching his designs on paper, it’s the process of creating, sculpting and assembling these pieces that he finds most gratifying. He’s become passionate about making boxes that allows him to work on both the inside and outside designs — with the mystery of its interior and the secrets that can be hidden inside. These little surprises are special gifts to the wearer that they can choose to share with others. Terry creates a sense of color and space through the use of various surface treatments — from highly polished silver to dark, textural matte finishes.

Seeing these 3D forms come alive nourishes his creativity. As he continues to work in metal clay, Terry finds that these wearable objects have a unique ability to capture the inspiration he sees in the world around him.

Flora and Flesh: The Work of Jessica CalderwoodOpening and artist reception: January 21, 2016, 6 - 8 PM. Exhibition continues through February 28, 2016.

“Effortlessly moving from large–scale to small–scale work, this exhibition will also feature Calderwood’s jewelry. Recognized for her mastery of enamel, Calderwood is interested in working with media that are considered to be “marginalized craft”. This is what initially attracted her to enamel, a material that is historically part of the woman’s sphere. Recently the artist has started to incorporate polymer clay, porcelain, wool felting, and glass beads, materials that are also attributed to a woman’s hand. Calderwood first started using these materials in her sculptural work but they have slowly become a part of her jewelry making vocabulary as well. The foundation for this recent body of work came to fruition during Calderwood’s Residency in the Arts/Industry Program while at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Sheboygan, WI. “ ~ Reinstein Ross

Amy Roper LyonsPlique-à-Jour Workshop: Enameling Without a NetTwo-day workshops: Members $235, non-members $270Wednesday, March 16 & Thursday, March 17 Friday, March 18 & Saturday, March 19

Plique-à-jour is one of the most challenging but also most rewarding of enameling techniques. This class will break it down into a clear step-by-step method, revealing tips and tricks that demystify this beautiful art. Using fine silver wire and eutectic solder, students will fabricate a framework. The enamels will then be suspended in the openings of the filigree, and fired without a backing, the physics of surface tension holding the molten glass in place.

The class will cover bending and soldering the silver wires, application of the enamel, special procedures for successful firing, and methods for finishing the work. Students will complete a flat project, and techniques for working three-dimensionally will be discussed. Beginners will gain an introduction to an exciting medium, and more experienced students will deepen their understanding.

Terry KovalcikCreating Fine Silver Clay Elements for EnamelingTwo-day workshop: Members $235, non-members $270Friday, March 18 & Saturday, March 19

Enameling on fine silver metal clay is a wonderful experience. PMC Flex is very easy to work and the clay can even be manipulated in its leather hard stage to make cloisonné settings for enamels. It takes on any shape or texture. One of the best qualities of silver clay is its ability to capture deep textures that would be very laborious to achieve using traditional methods. Transparent enamels look great on deep textured backgrounds. Learn the process of working with PMC Flex clay to prepare a base for your enameling projects. Create texture backgrounds using a variety of techniques – assembling cloisonné cells, texturing, embossing, carving and more. Each participant will create a few fine silver elements that will be fired during the workshop. These elements can be used in a variety of enameling techniques – ready to take back to your studio to enamel later. Material Fee – approximately $125 for the Flex Silver clay kit will be collected at the workshop. (Please note: Each kit will contain a relative amount of PMC silver that will be utilized during the workshop. Personal usage may vary dependent on the size and volume of work you create. The price of PMC is based on current market price of silver as of October 2015 and may fluctuate. Additional materials will be available for purchase.)

Chris Darway22K Gold on Copper and SterlingTwo-day workshops: Members $235, non-members $270Wednesday, March 16 & Thursday, March 17 Friday, March 18 & Saturday, March 19

This technique is the application of 22K gold (Aura 22) onto copper and sterling silver without copper depletion of the sterling. Aura 22 is part of Mitsubishi’s family of metal clay which when fired produces a 22K gold alloy. This workshop will use copper, sterling, glass and enamel. We will also cover copper etching using super pickle. Think liquid Keum Boo.It is fast, consistent, and liquid Aura 22 goes a long way. We will be fusing Aura 22 using a torch.

Gold clad copper can be etched, formed, soldered on and enameled without loss of the gold.

Students must purchase (1) jar Aura 22 from Rio Grande or other online vendor. (The approximate cost is $68 and fluctuates with the gold market). You will use a small amount of the product in class, depending on the size of your pieces. You will also have a good portion to use at a later date. “There are a few other gold products on the market. Please purchase Aura 22. I know it works”. ~ Chris Darway
