Module II: From Harvest to Table

Module II aims to create awareness of efficient harvesting and postharvest technologies within the framework of Good Agricultural and Manufacturing Practices (GAP/GMP). A better understanding of the economics of vegetable production and marketing is part of the curriculum.

Week 1: IntroductionLectures will focus on the essentials of good agricultural and manufacturing processes (GAP/GMP) as well as on relevant technologies for postharvest handling and processing of vegetables. Field trips to Thai local markets around the training site is arranged to enable the participants to interact with market vendors, buyers and vegetable farmers.

Week 2: Vegetable Postharvest TechnologiesLectures and hands-on exposure (laboratory and field) will focus on both low cost and advanced vegetable postharvest technologies. This includes appropriate packaging and design. As regards food safety issues, a lecture and practicum on the rapid methods for pesticide residue analysis is provided.

Week 3: Postharvest and MarketingLectures and exercises on the economics and market analysis of vegetable production and marketing systems will be the main topic of this week. A field trip will expose participants to successful vegetable production and marketing sites in Thailand. This will include visits to seed companies.

Week 4: NutritionTrainees will continue to participate in the famer field school on vegetable production. Lectures and exercises as regards improved nutrition and health of rural and urban consumers through increased awareness, access, and consumption of nutritious, diverse and safe vegetables are provided. Module III: Vegetables for Sustainable Development

Module III will provide information on how vegetable research and development can contribute to achieving the Millennium Development Goals. It will outline how vegetables link with other sectors and may complement different development initiatives. Participants will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to conceptualize and implement research and development activities to enhance the desired impact of such initiatives.

Week 1: Project ManagementAn overview of the different cross-sectoral concerns related to development issues will be presented and discussed. Essentials of proposal writing and the project management will be provided.

Week 2: Emerging Issue: EnvironmentClimate change contributes to frequent flooding, prolonged droughts and temperature extremes which affect the agricultural sector worldwide. Appropriate approaches that will enhance the climate resilience of vegetable growers and conserve natural resources will be presented. This includes ecological sanitation, participatory planning, and urban and periurban horticulture. Lectures on disaster preparedness, mitigation and risk management related to vegetables are included.

Week 3: Emerging Issues: Microfinancing, Gender, LeadershipParticipants will discuss the impact of microfinancing, gender sensitive development approaches and leadership for sustainable development.

Week 4: Development Action Plans/ClosingParticipants will prepare and present development action plans for possible implementation once they return to their duty stations. A closing and farewell program for the whole 29th RTC is scheduled on the last day.

Module I: From Seed to Harvest

Module I focuses on the essentials of integrated vegetable productionwithin the framework of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). This includes seed production, introduction to plant breeding, as well as an overview on how to facilitate and manage farmer education programs.

Week 1: Introduction, Seedling Management and Seed HealthThis week covers topics on seed production, role of private seed companies in the vegetable industry, and a two-day intensive seminar entitled "Seed Heath Testing." This seminar includes hand-on laboratory practice and lectures on identifying seed-borne diseases for seed quarantine, production, and storage purposes. Participants will receive a certificate of completion for the "Seed Health Testing" seminar.

Week 2: Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Vegetable BreedingThis week will cover topics on the essentials of vegetable production following GAP protocols and field trips to GAP certified farms. In addition, there will be lectures on breeding vegetable crops, with emphasis on highlighting recent breakthroughs in this field. A session on statistics relevant for agricultural research and development purposes is also included.

Week 3: Disease ManagementThe whole week is dedicated to lectures and practicum (laboratory and field exercises) on vegetable diseases. Experiences from academia and research and development projects related to vegetable disease management will be shared with participants.

Week 4: Insect Pest Management/ClosingActivities for the last week will focus on managing insect pests of vegetables through IPM (Integrated Pest Management) strategies. Both lectures and field/laboratory exercises and experiences from ongoing research and development activities will be shared with participants.
