that his view is fuzzy. He knows that he is under the influence.

THE EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL ON VISION

Page 13: Effects of madya on eyes

ADVERSE EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL ON EYES Decreased visual acuity Slow pupil reactions Decreased depth Perception Decreased peripheral vision Decreased contrast sensitivity Resistance to Glare Optic neuropathy Frequent migraines AMD Nystagmus Poor cosmetic appearance

Page 14: Effects of madya on eyes

(1) Decreased visual acuity / performance: Visual acuity can be reduced by up to 32 percent through consumption of alcohol & overall visual performance may be altered since drinking heavily impairs brain function. The person may have blurred vision or double vision due to weakened eye muscle coordination & may also experience delayed reactions while driving.

(2) Slow pupil reactions: Alcohol tends to affect the speed at which your iris constricts and dilates & may also lead to consticted pupil. A driver that has been drinking alcohol cannot adapt as quickly to oncoming headlights.

(3) Decreased Depth Perception: Alcohol affects the muscles that control eye movements, making it increasingly difficult for both eyes to focus on the same object. This causes problems with depth perception -- the ability to judge distance and depth

(4) Decreased peripheral vision: Drinking alcohol has also been shown to decrease the sensitivity of your peripheral vision. This may give you the effect or perception of having tunnel vision.

Page 15: Effects of madya on eyes

(7) Optic Neuropathy: Optic neuropathy is the term for damage to the optic nerve that connects the retina to the brain. In people who either smoke or drink excessively, this is called tobacco-alcohol amblyopia and can result in a range of visual impairments, including decreased peripheral vision, lower sensitivity to contrast and a more general loss of sight

(8) Frequent migraines: Alcohol has been shown to be a trigger for severe migraine headaches in some people. You may experience a temporary, but debilitating visual aura before the onset of the headache. The visual aura may appear as blind spots, graying of vision or zig-zag patterns of light.

(5) Decreased contrast sensitivity: Drinking too much alcohol can alter your contrast sensitivity, or how precise you can discern between shades of gray. Driving in rain or fog will be much more dangerous.

(6) Resistance to Glare: Alcohol hampers the reaction times of pupils as light levels change suddenly. This means the eyes are unable to adapt quickly enough to compensate for differing light levels and so impairing visual clarity. For example, the oncoming headlights of a car will dazzle a driver under the influence of alcohol far more than it will a sober driver.

Page 16: Effects of madya on eyes

(10) Nystagmus: It is a condition of involuntary eye movements, acquired in infancy or later in life, that may result in reduced or limited vision.

(11) Poor cosmetic appearance: Drinking can cause eye redness. Alcohol causes the blood vessels in your eyes to expand, making them more prominent.

(9) AMD (Age-related macular degeneration): Wine consumption may lower, rather than raise, the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
