thinking
Guided notes Literature packets Multi-genre Note cards Other examples:
Strategic notes Q notes Cornell notes Pre-reading questionnaire
EFFECTIVE NOTE-TAKING STRATEGIES Literature Packets
Novel cards Literature circles Graphic organizers Quote responses Essay outline
You can mix and match which elements you want to include in the packet for each novel
The quality of the packet can be graded on how thoroughly each student takes notes on each novel or larger work.
EFFECTIVE NOTE-TAKING STRATEGIES
Notes with notecards Goal:
To teach your class how to take notes for research papers.
To teach your class how to form ideas and arguments from notes.
Supplies 2 differently sized packages of note cards.
EFFECTIVE NOTE-TAKING STRATEGIES
Procedure Students will be asked to bring to class
packages of 2 different sized note cards. The largest size will be used for their
notes. The smaller card will be used for citing
source materials. Present strategy to class then practice
in library using guided practice worksheet.

Example
EFFECTIVE NOTE-TAKING STRATEGIES
Assessment Collect note cards throughout research
process Check for correct citations. Check for appropriate subjects. Check note cards against outline and works cited
page.
EFFECTIVE NOTE-TAKING STRATEGIES Positives
Students can arrange their note cards to help form ideas and create outline.
The process of taking notes, rearranging the information, and forming arguments climbs up Blooms taxonomy.
Every piece of information is cited. Cons
Potential for students to lose cards. Students responsible for providing note cards.
EFFECTIVE NOTE-TAKING STRATEGIES Guided notes
Organized notebook (notebook checks) Chronological order (date and title) Prepared hand-outs that outline lectures but
leave blank spaces for key concepts, facts, definitions, etc.
Follow the lecture Important points Foundation Questions/discussion

EFFECTIVE NOTE-TAKING STRATEGIES Multi-genre project
History project Literature connection
Example History research project may be on World War I
and the use of gas and trench warfare. Literature component could be about Wilfred
Owen’s poem “Dulce et Decorum Est.”
DULCE ET DECORUM ESTBent double, like old beggars under sacks,Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed
through sludge,Till on the haunting flares we turned out backs,And towards our distant rest began to trudge.Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame, all
blind;Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hootsOf gas-shells dropping softly behind.
Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!--An ecstasy of fumblingFitting the clumsy helmets just in time,But someone still was yelling out and stumblingAnd flound'ring like a man in fire or lime.—Dim through the misty panes and thick green
light, As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams before my helpless sightHe plunges at me, guttering, choking,
drowning.
If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin,If you could hear, at every jolt, the bloodCome gargling from the froth-corrupted lungsBitter as the cudOf vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,--My friend, you would not tell with such high
zestTo children ardent for some desperate glory,The old Lie: Dulce et decorum estPro patria mori.
