We’re So Green In April 2015, Valley Metro received Bronze level status in the
American Public Transportation Association (APTA)
Sustainability Commitment. Green features include:
• 2,800 solar voltaic panels at our Operations and
Maintenance facility.
• A paperless vehicle inspection system on buses saves
158,000 sheets of paper annually.
• Vehicle washing equipment is designed with water recycling
features, which saves approximately 122 gallons per wash,
or provides a 60 percent reduction in reoccurring fresh water
usage.

Compressed Work Week Basics
13
9/80 SCHEDULE DEFINED
• 80 hours completed in 9 days – not 10
• Employees work eight 9-hour days and one 8-hour
day
• (8 x 9) + (1 x 8) = 80 hours plus 1 happy employee
14
HOW 9/80 SCHEDULE WORKS
• The Fair Labor Standards Act defines a
workweek as “…seven consecutive 24-hour
periods. It need not coincide with the calendar
week, but may begin on any day and at any hour
of the day.” US Dept. of Labor, Wage & Hour Division Fact Sheet 23
• 9/80 Schedule breaks the work week at noon on
a weekday.
15
MORE ON HOW CWW WORKS
• Different work weeks may be established
for different employees or groups of
employees.
• Averaging of hours over
two or more weeks is
not permitted.
• Employees may not move
days off from one work week to the next.
16
“Half the team takes one Friday off, while the other half works and
vice versa. It’s all about equality.” Maria Mejia, Dibble Engineering
OBSTACLES TO OVERCOME
• Business hours remain
Monday – Friday,
8:00 – 5:00
• Juggling to ensure
sufficient coverage in
all areas
17
• Fairness – not everyone can participate
• Corporate inertia: Action takes effort;
inaction is easy
COMPRESSED WORK WEEK BENEFITS
• Extends coverage hours
• Employees handle
personal responsibilities
outside of work time
• Reduces absenteeism
and disruption; improves
morale
18
“[CWW gives us] content, committed employees who feel the organization is
flexible and understanding of their needs.” Melinda Dillon, Parsons Brinckerhoff
“One of our values is ‘Investing in our employees is a good investment,’ and with
(CWW) we are able to provide quality service. Our employees feel comfortable
knowing we offer these options for them. Maria Mejia, Dibble Engineering

CWW TIPS FROM TCs
“Consider the holiday or vacation day
payout. For example, the company
pays out a holiday based on length of
shift, therefore a 3x12 shift would pay
out 33% of their weekly pay, a 4x10
@ 25%, and 5x8 @ 20%. This also
holds true with paid days off. This is
managed at our facility by
acknowledging all these benefits
associated with a particular shift and
that an associate should take all this
into consideration when considering
moving to a different shift.” Catherine
Wells, Macy’s
20
WORDS FROM THE WISE
• “Address the work shift during the
interview process and let the applicant
know if the position can participate in
a compressed work week. Due to
daycare situations some working
parents prefer the 5/8 schedule.” Jo
Lansdale, Young’s Market Company
• “If you offer flexibility, it shows your
employees that you appreciate their
time and hard work.” Maria Mejia, Dibble
Engineering
21
• “Compressed schedules are great. The tri-fold benefits of working
CWW are 1-It helps save our air quality by giving you an extra day off
work, 2-It frees you up to do other things around the house that you are
too tired to get to during the week or weekend, and 3-It gives you an
extra day of rest! Melinda Dillon, Parsons Brinckerhoff
THINGS TO REMEMBER
• Consider shift coverage.
• Communicate what needs to
be accomplished.
• Include CWW in the job description as a potential benefit.
• Consider the impact on all
departments.
• Communicate to all impacted
employees.
