Abstract The Purpose of this study was to clarify the physiological and physical intensity of diagonal stride during treadmill roller-skiing. Tweniy eight cross-country ski racers ( 15 junior (Jr), 1 1 senior biathlon athletes (Sr), 2 national team members (NT) ) participated as subjects. V0,max and HRmax were measured in an incremental running test. Relationship between blood lactate concentration(lA) and heart rate war measured at every stage (3 min) of incremental grade protocol of roller-skiing test to determine the %HRmax at 2 mmol/l LA. Significant difference was observed in V02max (NPSr>Jr), but there was no significant difference in HRmax in either group. The mean value of %HRrnax at 2 rnmol/l LA were 86.5 f 4.8% (Jr), 85.4+2.7% (Sr) and 90.0*2.3% (NT). Although no signifjcant difference was observed in the mean value of %HRmax at 2 mmol/l LA between Jr and Sr, Sr shows significantly higher stage (4.3 k0.5) of protocol than Jr (2.7-t 0.9). These results suggest that 85-87%HRmax is effective to determine the exercise intensity of 2 mmolll LA in uphill roller-skiing by diagonal stride to cross-country ski racers with 60-70 ml/kg/rnin V02max, and that the prescription of the relative 85-87%HRmax would lead the different speed and gradient of roller-skiing according to aerobic capacity, metabolic condition, emciency and experience in diagonaL stride.
